Remote Desktop Services in Windows 2012 R2, Requires RD Web Access?

$

Hello and Good Day Community...

My organization is looking at Windows 2012 R2 for Remote Desktop Session host. Our production environments currently run Windows 2008 R2.

In setting up a new Windows 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Host, I am doing a standard deployment. I am noticing when going thru the wizard, I am asked to specify a connection broker server. This looks to be required now when setting up Windows 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services. I understand that. But it is also asking me to specify a RD Web Access server. I don't seem to have an option for going past that part of the wizard, it looks like it wants you to specify one before continuing.

I ask this question because we do not use RD Web Access in out Remote Desktop farms. Is this now required in a standard deployment, even if you don't use RD Web Access? If so, why is it required? Does the RD Web Access role now have additional responsibilities that now make it mandatory?

Thanks for any insight you can provide...

Server 2012 R2 RD Web Certificate issues

I'm running RDS through VM's(Hyper-V). I have licensing on a domain controller and all other services on a separate VM. I purchased a SAN certificate from godaddy for remote.mydomain.com mail.mydomain.com and a couple others. The intention was to use remote.mydomain.com for RDS. The problem is I'm still getting untrusted certificate errors in browsers and SSO is actually two logins. Under deployment properties the certificates say untrusted and OK for status. I'm using one public IP address for mail and another for remote. What am I doing wrong?

Windows Server 2012R2 Datacenter RDS Deployment with RemoteApps from Windows 8.1 VDI VMs

Hi All,

I've seen several threads with similar discussions...most of them looked old, so I figured I would ask again...

I have a Windows Server 2012R2 RDS deployment for VDI.  The full-desktop sessions (Windows 8.1 Enterprise) work well.  They restore when the user logs off, no problem, and the applications work as expected.

In this VDI collection, if I publish RemoteApps, I can pick and publish Apps that I want to use.  When I brows to the myhost/rdweb site and click the icon for say Notepad, I see a screen that jumps up and acts like it is connecting, but then it just disappears.

I don't get any error messages in the event viewer that explain why it disappears or disconnects.

Is there a step I am missing somewhere?

User cannot install Windows Store apps when using User Profile Disk

This problem persists from Windows 8 and 8.1. When using Remote Desktop Services with full VDI and User Profile Disks, users are not able to install Windows Store apps properly. The app might work during the install session but after the user logs out and back in, the app is listed in the start menu but no longer works. The only solution is to delete the app and disable the store as I have been doing in Windows 8.1. This is no longer an acceptable solution as we will need to install apps and side-loading is not an option that I have time for. Users need to be able to install apps and keep them up to date by themselves.

Office 365 on RDS

Iam having hard time believing that Office 365 ProPlus has quacks on RDS when using roaming profiles. I have configured my office 365 proplus on RDS and is working well except for one issue. My users are asked sign in every time they logoff and log back on to a new RDS session.

My RDS farm has a couple servers and we use roaming profiles. Appdata redirection is not enabled. Profiles are deleted on the local RDS server when the user logs out.

I have noted that licence file is downloaded as expected in the local appdata folder. However when user logs out, the %localappdata% is discarded and profile is deleted on the local server.   As a result the Office 365 needs to reauthenticate and download the next day or next time they log in again.

I have implemented a login/logoff script which copies the licence file in the %localappdata% and restores it on login. This works to a certain extent. It works if the users session remains on the same server where the initial login was done. If the user is redirected to another server, then the login batch file is rendered useless because the wrong file would be restored by my login script.

A fellow has suggested using user profile disks as an alternative. But am not sure if this will indeed solve my problem.  How was this meant to work, iam sure this has been done and is working somewhere with roaming profiles.

Set GPO for RDP Compression on server or client side?

Hi All,

Just trying to get some confirmation if we should be applying the "configure compression for remotefx data" to the server/remote or client/local side of the RDP connection?

The description doesn't really indicate & I've got a subset of machines that I would like compression disabled when connecting to them (as we have WAN Acceleration); while leaving compression on when connecting to all other machines (so i'm hoping it is server/remote side).

Cheers

Is it works from new OS?

Thanks.

RemoteApp 2012 Publishing Exchange Management tools for Exchange 2010

$

We have a RemoteApp deployment that we use as our "management portal", containing tools we need to manage the environment (AD users and computers, DHCP console, etc). We've published pretty much all the tools, but the Exchange tools are having a few issues.

Whenever you run the RemoteApp for the Exchange Management Console (.msc file) you have to click "show details" while it's connecting so that you can click on "Yes" after a UAC prompt pops up:

That happens even if the person connecting is a local admin on the RD Session Host that's hosting the Exchange Management Console.

I'm also unable to figure out how to publish the Exchange Management Shell. When selecting to publish RemoteApps the Exchange Management Shell shows up, but it obviously just points to powershell.exe. Looking at the actual shortcut you get the following:

C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe -version 2.0 -noexit -command ". 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\bin\RemoteExchange.ps1'; Connect-ExchangeServer -auto"

I published the Exchange Management Shell and then placed everything after powershell.exe as a command-line paramter. The PowerShell GUI does launch when you run the RemoteApp, and it does appear to connect to Exchange correctly. However, I'm unable to actually interact with the window that opens. It sits at the PowerShell prompt, but I'm unable to type anything, or get the window to respond at all. I even have to close the window by right-clicking on the window on the taskbar and selecting Close, as the "X" in the upper-right corner is also unresponsive.

I'd greatly appreciate any ideas/help/advice. Thanks.

Print Server Deployed Printers

I realize there are several methods to deploy printers in Win2012R2 and RDS in general, but could someone explain to me why this method does not appear to be working?

Dedicated print server with 15 TCPIP printers installed.  Each different HP has the correct Class driver installed.  Each HP prints from this server no problem.  Three of the Ricoh printers use the RICOH Class driver without issue.  One model Ricoh I had to download the MP 161 type 3 driver from the web, works flawlessly on the Print server.

Went to the RDS 2012R2 server and in devices and printers i manually added each of the Class drivers for the printers, the list of v4 drivers matched the print server exactly.  Then i added the one Ricoh v.3 driver.

On the print server in Print Management each printer was right clicked>Deploy with Group Policy... selected a predefined GPO, set it to Per Machine, that GPO is applied to the OU that the RDS server is in, and loopback replace is enabled.

GPUpdate and rebooted the RDS server, logged into the console and all of the printers were there as expected.  The drivers however were a different story.  The Ricoh's the use the Class driver, no problem.  The Ricohs that needed the v.3 driver were instead using the HP Laserjet A4, a random other HP used that driver as well, and a couple were using the Laserjet ZJS driver.  Then after another reboot a couple of the Ricoh's started using the v3 driver, but in Devices and Printers the model is simply "Network Printer Connection"

Fallback driver GPO is disabled.  Remote Desktop Easy Print is disabled.  Any ideas on what's going on?

***the behavior seems to be consistent, for instance I have 3 printers on the server using the HP Laserjet P205X series PCL6 Class Driver, and on the RDS server I manually installed that driver, but all 3 printers are instead using the HP Laserjet A4/Letter PCL 6 Class Driver.

***also if I use the Add Printer wizard and find the printer, select it, as a user in the desktop collection, it installs fine, it pops up to confirm says it's using Laserjet P205X series PCL6 Class Driver, i get the printer SSDF01.domain.com (it lists it differently this way) installed, but when i look at the driver it is using, the ZJS.  Very odd to me.

add RDSH to an existing farm

a while ago I asked a question about adding RDSH to an existing FARM. I cannot find the post. So, will ask again...

RDS2012 R2:  2 brokers, 2 RDSHs, SQL

I have two Servers 2012 that I want to add to the Farm with RDSH role.

Please correct the steps that I am planning to do :

1. add Servers 2012 to Server Manager\Servers on Broker server

2. install RDSH role on added servers from Server Manager

3. install the apps that are running on existing RDSHs

4. Add new RDSHs to LOCAL GROUP on Broker servers. Here I have a BIG question:to what LOCAL GROUP?

I have 3 local Groups on my RDS Deployment Servers (Brokers and RDSHs :

a) RDS Endpoint Servers

b) RDS Management Servers

c) RDS Remote Access Servers

d) Remote Desktop Users

Can somebody tell necessary Group membership. I found an article related to 2008 Farm and it says:

"Add Each RD Session Host Server in the Farm to the Session Broker Computers Local Group"

There is no Session Broker Computers group in RDS2012. If I check my existing RDS local groups on deployment servers there are different entries... So nee exact required group membership.

5. Add new RDSHs to the deployment.

Thanks.

Cannot Logon with Smartcard over WAN connection

$

Hello everyone,

I recently installed a Win 2008 R2 server and a Win XP SP3 workstation.

I use a smartcard to login from the workstation to the server via RDP and it works great in LAN condition.

If I try the same thing over WAN connection (150/200 ms latency), it does not work.

After the "Reading Smart Card..." screen I do not receive the PIN screen and the RDP session close itself.

There are no errors or logs.

I guess there is a timeout problem.

Any idea ?

Imaging or cloning RDSH servers

Anyone have any experience with this in 2012R2 session collections?

Specifically I'm referring to server farms with more than 2 session hosts servers.  What i've done previously was limited to two rdsh servers and i just built them side by side.  Now i'm on a project with 5, I'd like to build one as a template, with as much configured as possible so should i need to replace a server or add an additional, with all the same hardware specs, i can do it with relative ease.

i want to get it to a point that i run sysprep and shut it down and capture my image.  that master machine can then be booted back up and used in the collection.  then i can deploy the image to the next server, boot it up, add it to the collection and so on.  sounds easy enough, but there's some issues:

In order for the apps to work correctly in rds, the rdsh role needs to be installed first.  It also needs to be a member server.  But then the collection isn't specific to the server, and i need to create the collection to configure rds, but then when i sysprep the server and shut it down, it will be removed from the domain, but not the collection.

So whats an appropriate procedure?

Thanks.

I should add, that UPD are enabled as well.

Random Event ID 7011 & 7046 TSGateway Service

Hello

I have a virtualised Server 2012 R2 RDS Farm that consists of 1 gateway and 4 hosts access to the farm randomly stops with the TSGateway service at fault. I receive event ID 7011 a few times then the 7046 if I go onto the server and restart the TSGateway service then connectivity is restored. there is hardly any 3rd party software on there and I am struggling to see what can be causing the issue.

Any help to resolve this issue is much appreciated.

Very slow access to mapped local client drives (with RD Gateway)

$

Hi,

for our published applications it is necessary to save files to the mapped/redirected local client drives (Session Collection -> Client Settings -> Enable redirection for the following: Drives).

This is working, but very, very slow (i.e. for a small file < 1Mb it needs minutes!)

I have setup an RDS environment as follows:

  • One 2012R2Server (VM) for:
    * RD Connection Broker, Session Host, Gateway, Licensing, Web Access;
    * also RD Session Host for testing;
    * the server is within DMZ,      but has access to the corporate network (not Internet)
  • Several2012R2 Servers (VMs):
    * RD Session Hosts
    * within DMZ
  • Several2008R2 Servers (VMs):
    *
RD Session Hosts (found a description to publish also 2008R2 App on the 2012R2 RD Web Access Portal)
    * within DMZ

We thought about SSL, that this could be the reason or the certificate (but this looks good) or the AntiVirus software.

I read different articles about the Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses.

When I check the Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses box I can save files on the normal way (fast). But then I have only this (normal) fast access within the DMZ. Outside the DMZ the access is still very slow. (Also in this case the normal users have no access, only the administrators. I still don’t know why. But this will be the next step.)

Then we thought that the way through two servers (RD Session Host and RD Gateway) could be the reason. However the file transfer of the published application from the RD Gateway Server is so slow, too.

I've run out of ideas.

So my question is:

Why is the file download so extremely slow, when the RD Gateway is involved and only the file transfer to the local client drives. The normal file transfer to the local server drives is fast. Also the rest of the application is fast. When I use the normal Remote Desktop Session (mstsc.exe) everything is also fine.

Thank you in advance for any help and hints you can give.

 Thomas

Windows 8.1 Pro attempting to RDP to 2012R2 and 2008R2 "The session was disconnected because license store creation failed with error access denied"

We have migrated from Device CALs to User CALs (with MS assistance, will DM case number on request) - now several users are getting the following error: "the session was disconnected because license store creation failed with error access denied"

I've seen several answers to this for different versions of 8/8.1, all of which are similar to

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/598acb64-644d-426f-b129-10e3061db786/the-remote-session-was-disconnected-because-license-store-creation-failedwindows-81?forum=winserverTS.

The summary is to back up and delete HKLM/SW/MS/MSLicensing

The problem we run into is that that key does not exist in the first place. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

TechNet Article for Windows 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services

Hello and Good Evening Microsoft community...

I was searching around for a technical deep dive, or Step-By-Step article on TechNet for Windows 2012\2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services installation and management. Considering all of the changes Microsoft made to deploying RDSH servers on Windows 2012 R2 compared to WIndows 2008 R2, there seems to be a serious lack of technical information on TechNet. Can anyone point me to this TechNet documentation if it exists?
