Error "the token supplied to the function is invalid" when making an RDP connection

I get the error "the token supplied to the function is invalid" when trying to make an RDP connection from a Windows 7 Professional SP 1 client to a Windows 2012 server. I have no problems connecting to the same server from a Windows 2008 Server.

I have 3 similarly configured servers to connect to, and the behaviour is the same across each. The connections are made across the internet, using the same IP address, but different ports (3343, 3344 and 3345) for each server. There will be a reverse proxy (or similar) at the server end that then maps the requests to each server - I don't have the details of this, but given that I can connect from a Windows 2008 Server from the same location, I assume the issue relates to the client configuration.

Each server provides its own certificate (which is not in a trusted path). The successful connection from the server completed without installing the certificate locally, and the Windows 7 client fails whether or not I install the certificate (though note I've only installed it in the Trusted Publishers Store - I no longer get prompted, so can't change this, unless someone can tell me how to get prompted again).

Feel free to move this to a more appropriate forum if there is one
