Unable to remote desktop into a laptop that is not connected to domain

Hi,

For the first time in a long time I believe I have a question that has not been asked/talked about anywhere else on the web. Basically I want to remote desktop into my work laptop, from my home pc while at home. In order for this to work I have to first logon to the laptop, establish a vpn connection to my domain, and then remote desktop in from my home pc. If I don't first establish the vpn connection I get the following error "The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted".

Conceptually I understand that the Domain Controller can't be contacted to verify credentials. However my cached credentials work on the actual laptop console when logging in and not being connected to the domain. Is there a way to configure remote desktop, or a domain policy to allow cached credentials on RDP?

Laptop is running win 7 ultimate 64bit. Host doesn't matter but tried from both Win8/7.

Thanks!
