Windows 2012 RDS Certificate mismatch

Have not had too much experience with the setting up SSL certs on a remote desktop server and I've been asked to set one up. We have a single Windows 2012 and the users need to access it remotely using RDP so we got them a standard SSL cert from GoDaddy. After doing some research was able to the the GW role configured with the new cert. Also created the DNS record to match that of the cert. Firewall configuration to use port 443 pointed to this server is done also.

However when I connect externally using the external address of the gateway I get the cert mismatch error, because the cert is. remote.mydomain.com and the internal server we need to connect to is myserver.mydomain.com.

My question is did I purchase the wrong type of SSL cert for this configuration? Should I have a SAN or even a wild card cert instead?

Is there any other method supported that I can implement to avoid the cert mismatch?
