Configure remoteapp event logging

$

Hey folks,

I have a Server 2012 RDS environment, using multiple RDS Hosts, with a RD Connection Broker. I want (need) to figure out how many users I get logged in monthly, and how many of them use our RemoteApp for Excel, Word, Access, etc (read: SPLA). I've been scouring through post after post, trying to find something that will help me figure out what the user launches, to no avail. I started looking through my event viewer to see what I can find there, and I found something interesting, but very confusing. On the Connection Broker, I found an event, id 1040, with the following:

Remote application (Excel 2013) is launched using  stored credentials on RemoteApp and Desktop connection (mycb.domain.com).

This seems to be what I'm looking for. It also has the user who launched. However, I have a SINGLE entry in my event viewer for this, and it was 6 months ago. The log I was looking at was Microsoft-Windows-RemoteApp and Desktop Connections/Operational. There are a total of 4 entries in this log, that's it. I checked the properties of the log, and it is set to "Enable logging". I can't figure out how to make this log these, or if I should be looking elsewhere. I was then intending to track these events using SCOM 2012 collection rule, so I can report and/or monitor if need be.

How do I configure this event log to show me these events so I can track them, OR, where else could I look for this information so I can track my users access of our Microsoft RemoteApps, OR, how else can I get the reporting I need?

Thanks much in advance!

Improve Remote App Performance (2012)

$

We have 100 users that connected to a 2012 RDS environment (2 Remote App session hosts).

Both session hosts have

  • Server 2012
  • Dynamic disks - disk size doesn't grow often most of their files are saved to our LAN
  • Dynamic RAM - with 75% buffer up to 128GB for each host
  • In RDS the collection is set to automatically adjust based on connection speed

The Remote Apps function fine, but the users are going from i7, sdd, 8gb ram desktops to using Remote Apps. So there are some growing pains. Is there anything I can do to improve Remote App performance?

Thank you in advance,

User initiates a remote desktop connection from Laptop to server 1.

Is there a way to allow user to reconnect to a disconnected session from a different computer?

Unable to remote desktop to windows server 2012 due to failed to create self signed certificate

My Windows server 2012 standard has been enabled with Remote Desktop.

It has been working until recent but now my remote desktop client always gives me this error: 'This computer can't connect to the remote computer'.

When i check the event viewer from my 2012 server after trying to remote desktop to it, i see this:

event id: 1057

Severity: Error

Source:: Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager

Log: System

Message detail:

The RD Session Host Server has failed to create a new self signed certificate to be used for RD Session Host Server authentication on SSL connections. The relevant status code was Object already exists.

I've tried to follow the instructions from the another technet post: removing the existing self signed certificate (by using mmc), then restarting the Remote Desktop Configuration service to re-generate the certifiacte, then configure in RD Session Host Configuration (tsconfig.msc)

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/8df42746-465f-4902-95a6-121ef1f0fd68/the-terminal-server-has-failed-to-create-a-new-self-signed-certificate-to-be-used-for-terminal

It did not work for me. No new self signed certificate has been re-generated. I also could not find RD Session Host Configuration from my server.

Remote Desktop Services not viewable ??

hello playing around with 2012 R2 and RDS. Noticed something, if I deploy RDS session based with RDgateway Tsbroker the works I can't view these same settings from any other servers in the Pool except for the one I initially configured everything from.

Example 1. This is from the Gateway server. I used this box to configure all the roles etc for all the other machines

Example 2.

Everything looks good, everything works I can login. I'm redirected to an available Session host server.

Once I'm in that session host server it's a different story. This is what I see. This goes for any other server in this pool. I've already tried removing all the roles from every server and starting from scratch again. Still this problem persists. is this by design ?

If I apply a per device CAL does it stick with certain devices or when the devices sign off can new ones use the same licences

I purchased a per device CAL and was wondering about this because we have more than 5 devices. If one device is signed on and is using a licence then signs off does that licence become available for a new device then? Or am I stuck with the same 5 devices even if they are not still signed on.

I have been experimenting with RDS, I only have one nice server and a low-end laptop to play with. I ran the session based RDS successfully but I'm having some issues with the Desktop based one.

Is is possible to set everything on just one single server? the broker, web, pool?

I'm using windows server 2012 r2 in the server and windows 7 in the low-end laptop

Thanks in advance :)

RDS Database Connection String Change

I was wondering if it was possible to change the database connection string for a Server 2012 HA Broker setup. It is currently pointing to one SQL server in an HA SQL cluster but it needs to be changed to point to the cluster object.  The current string is as follows.

DRIVER=SQL Server Native Client 11.0;SERVER=SQL1.contoso.com;Trusted_Connection=Yes;APP=Remote Desktop Services Connection Broker;Database=PHRDS

and needs to be...

DRIVER=SQL Server Native Client 11.0;SERVER=SQLCLUSTER.contoso.com;MultiSubnetFailover=True;Trusted_Connection=Yes;APP=Remote Desktop Services Connection Broker;Database=PHRDS

I use set-RDConnectionBrokerHighAvailability and get the following error.....

> Set-RDConnectionBrokerHighAvailability -connectionbroker "BROKER1.contoso.com" -DatabaseConnectionString "DRIVER=SQL Server Native Client 11.0;SERVER=SQLCLUSTER.contoso.com;MultiSubnetFailover=True;Trusted_Connection=Yes;APP=Remote Desktop Services Connection Broker;Database=RDS" -DatabaseFilePath "E:\SQL_data\RDS.mdf" -ClientAccessName "clientrds.contoso.COM"

RDP from Windows 7 to Server 2012 Terminal Server - Unable to save credentials

$

My office has 20 Windows 7 Pro desktops running and they all RDP to a Server 2008 using Term Serv and can save user credentials just fine.

We are moving to a new Server 2012 Term Server we'll be connecting to and we can connect to it as long as we don't have the RDP client set to save credentials.  If we have it set to save credentials, we get this error:

"The specified user name does not exist.  Verify the username and try logging in again.  If the problem continues, contact your system administrator or technical support."

The odd thing is that I do have a single Windows 8.1 desktop PC and that one works just fine with saved credentials.  I checked my Win7 PC's and the version of mstec.exe and they are nearly all different ranging from version 6.1 to 6.3 but they all have the same problem.  I checked the version of mstec.exe on the Win8.1 machine and it is version 6.3.

Anyone have this problem and a potential resolution for it?

Thanks.

Wyse Thin client not connecting to Windows 2008 R2 server

Configuration

SBS 2011 Server

Windows 2008 R2 server with Remote Desktop Services installed, License Manager installed.

WYSE WT3125SE thin clients with Windows CE 5

I setup the Windows 2008 with Remote Desktop Services and was able to successfully connect the Thin client.   Then I installed the License Manger and applied my Open license using User Cals.  Was able to login.  Next day I get the following error-"Because of a security error, the client could not connect to the remote computer.  Verify that you are logged onto the network and then try connecting again"    I still can connect fine from other machines even Windows Home Ed.   I remove license server and still was unable to connect.   Built a second Windows 2008 R2 server with RDS on it.  Was able to connect without issue.   Pointed it to the first RDS server license manager and have still been able to connect with the Thin Client.   The thin client can rdp to the SBS server without issue in admin mode, can connect to RDS2 server but not RDS1 with the license manger.    So my issue is with the license and so my question is what is it with the license server running on that server that is keeping thin client from connecting.  I even did a reload of RDS1 and tested connecting throughout the process and it worked up until I applied the license and then it stops. And then if I uninstall the license, rds, remove from domain still not able to connect.  Any help would be appreciated.

Option "Deny this user permissions to logon to a Remote Desktop Session Host Server" tuned on

$

Last week a lot of users start to complain that they can´t access my TS Server, where there are several Remote Apps published in my TS Gateway server. Everything was fine in the last 3 years.

We´re investigating an issue related to the Oracle IDM application, maybe the reconcilliantion process is enabling the "Deny this user permissions to logon to a Remote Desktop Session Host Server" option, without our permission

But the investigation of the problem will take longer, so, i need a method to remove the checkbok of the option, via script or automated method, while we´re investigating the issue, because the users calls, we uncheck the option and everything is fone again, but several hours later, the checkbos appears checked (on) again

I could´t find the option in powershell, nor ADSIEdit/Attribute editor.

I even couldn´t find the name of the field

I need to create a qucik-script to sweep the AD, and uncheck the optin, automatically, untill the problem is solved

RDS Servers Virtual Memory is low

Hello All,

I have managed to setup an RDS Farm with Windows server  2008 R2 .

Basically everything works fine , connected to domain and so on.

I have 3 Physical host sessions servers with 32GB Memory installed on each. They are all running 2008 server 64x. I have about 10 Users which I published a remote apps ( Internet explorer, Google chrome and outlook 2013 )

The problem :

Sometimes, all of a sudden, clients are disconnected from the server and get the error :

"Your computer does not have enough virtual memory available." ( Screenshot is attached )

What could be the reason for that error? Which computer is running out of memory? The remote computer or the local One?

If further information is needed please tell.

Please help .

Thanks in Advance!

Licensing mode for terminal services

Hi,

This has been most likely asked here already but i just cannot find exactly what i'm looking for. OK, here's my situation:

We have a windows server 2008 cd installer. We already had it running before, but we got hit with a virus that we needed to re-install. Now, we are just getting things back to work again. However, we are encountering this message on our server.
"The licensing mode for the terminal server is not configured"

When i tried to configure the licensing, it's asking for the license code. But i'm not sure where to find the license code? is it in the CD installer?

Actually, i was not the one who installed the windows server before; i just took over when the server got hit with a virus.

Also, i'm not very sure if we really need the TS CALs. Our server has multiple users from different countries, and we access the server through remote desktop access.

Hope you can help us with this issue.

Thank you, i appreciate it.

Best,

Vanessa

Terminal Services (TS) or Remote Desktop Services (RDS) scenario clarifications

$

Dear Support,

Question:

Do I still need to purchase RDS CALS license? or can use MSDN CALs in the Terminal Server?

Due to MSDN subscribers are End users, do not use Production Data and have to demo their developed applications to other End users group.

Scenario:

1. Use only Remote Desktop Session.

2. End users are MSDN Subscribers.  (Although stated by Microsoft End users are non MSDN subscribers)

3. End users demo applications to End users.

4. End users develop their applications and have to demo to other End users group.

From MSDN link:

Client Access Licenses for Terminal Services

With an MSDN subscription, you are allowed to provide end users access to Internet demonstrations of your programs via Terminal Services (Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008) or Remote Desktop Services (Windows Server 2008 R2). Up to 200 anonymous users can simultaneously access your demonstration this way. Your demonstration must not use production data. MSDN subscribers are licensed to demonstrate their applications to end users, but Terminal Services (TS) or Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is the only scenario where end users without an MSDN subscription can interact with the demonstration application while the software is licensed through MSDN subscriptions.

Accessing CALs
MSDN subscribers can access CALs for demonstration purposes through the Product keys page of MSDN Subscriber Downloads. Please access the documentation resources online for assistance with theTerminal Server activation process. If you have any questions, please visit the MicrosoftTerminal Services forum.

(Event ID: 36871) RDP to Windows 2012 Server

Hi.

I referred to similar questions.  But I couldn't find any consequences.

When I connect to a Server(Windows Server 2012), every time an Event happens in the client(Windows Server 2012.)

- - - - -

Application: Schannel

Event-ID   : 36871

Message   : A fatal error occurred while creating an SSL server credential. The internal error state is 10013.

- - - - -

But I CAN connect to the server by RDP in spite of the Error message.

Can I ignore the message or should I deal with this one seriously?

I'm afraid someday it might become a big problem.
