Need to install RDS in a new Windows Server 2016 without domain

I just installed my Server 2016 in Workgroup mode. However, I was not able to find any roles to install the RDS.

My 2 ADM remote desktop access work fine but I need 10 TS clients.

Can you tell me the procedure to install the terminal services if some one does not want to have an Active directory (domain)

Thank you

RemoteApp : Caps Lock / Num Lock become inverted in RemoteApp sessions. Server 2012r2 and 2016

$

This issue has been a thorn in my side for the past several months. While investigating I've read every post/article I could find on the topic and wanted to share my findings, as well as include instructions how to recreate the issue which I haven't seen elsewhere.

Symptom:

In Server 2012r2 and Server 2016 RDS environments, while in published RemoteApp applications, the Caps lock/Numlock keys become inverted from the local computer. For example, the keyboard indicator shows Caps Lock is off, but capitalizes all characters in the RemoteApp application.

Cause:

The Caps Lock/Num Lock keys are inverted when the application opens a new window, a text field is selected, and the “Caps Lock” or "Num Lock" keys are the first input. It appears that when new Windows are generated from the published application they don't get keyboard sync information until text is input. For instance, if you launch a published instance of File Explorer, click the search bar, and hit the "Caps Lock" key, the issue doesn't happen. However, if you right click a folder, select"open in new window", click the search bar in the new window, then hit the caps lock key, it will. Again, only if the Caps Lock/Numlock keys are the first input.

You can recreate the problem easily by doing the following:

  1. Publish "Notepad" in your RemoteApp environment
  2. Launch "Notepad
  3. Go to File -> Open
  4. Select the "File name:" field
  5. Press the "Caps Lock" or "Num Lock" key before pressing anything else
  6. The caps lock/num lock key will now be out of sync

I have tested this in several applications including: Adobe, WordPad, Word, Excel, PowerPoint. This also works in clean installations on both Server 2012r2 and 2016.

Solution:

Currently none. We placed a paid ticket with Microsoft Support where we explained the issue and provided instructions on how to recreate. The ticket was escalated, and we were eventually informed that this is a known issue that hasn't been documented. We were then provided a refund and informed that they would let us know when a fix is in place.

Workaround

Clicking anywhere outside of the RemoteApp applications will correct the inversion. We typically recommend clicking the task bar. Another option is minimizing and maximizing the application manually or by pressing Win+D twice. Many of our users use the caps lock key in place of the shift key. I'm not sure how effective it has been but we are instructing users to use the shift key, especially when entering credentials.

Even though there isn't currently a solution I hope that this is at least informative and someone finds it helpful.

Trouble while migrating RDS License Server CALs

$

Hello,

I have questions about migrating RD license server from 2012 R2 to 2019, I have

1 x Server 2012 R2 RDS license server with Server 2012 CALs (Enterprise agreement)

2 x Server 2012 R2 that do RDCB, RD gateway and web access roles.

13 x Server 2012 R2 Session host servers.

I want to upgrade them to Server 2019s.

First I created a Server 2019 with RDS License server role, and tried to migrate CALs to it, it asked for Enterprise agreement numbers, so I added and selected "Server 2019" CAL type and the migrator complained that it could not delete the CALs from the source server.

So I removed it and Added again as Server 2012 Types and it removed the CALs from the source license server.

I added the RD License server to RD License server group and License server role from RDS Deployment over view.

I stopped RD license server service from the Server 2012 R2 RD license server, removed the 2012 R2 RD license server from the RD license server group, and RDS Deployment over view. When I connected to the RDS, License usage did not change but I was able to connect. As if RDS does not know about the new RD license server but still let me use it.

Questions:

1. As I have Enterprise agreement, I can use the CALs for 2019 type? What do I do to make sure I can add the CALs as server 2019 type.

2. Why the RDS license usage count did not change? I rebooted gateway/web/connection broker servers but the usage count did not change, what am I doing wrong?

RDS 2019 + KB4519338 Roaming Start Menu fails

$

Cross-post from here, where I was redirected to this forum.

We have a bunch of Server 2019 RDS machines, that until last weekend worked fine. For roaming the start menu we roam AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\CloudStore and so far that worked perfectly for having for examples Tiles saved that users put in the start menu themselves.

Since installing KB4519338 this weekend during our maintenance, the start menu is not working anymore. Only right-click works, but the start menu itself is not functional. We all know the start-menu terror from Windows 10 syspreps and what not. When I remove AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\CloudStore from roaming, the start menu works again, but of course customizations aren't saved. We've tried roaming AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Caches as well, as that's to be seen in some howto's, but we've never found that to be needed, and it doesn't help here either.

Anyone else with this issue? By the way the latest as of yet KB4520062 does not fix this either, even if that has some start menu fixes.

Windows Server + RDP + Office License clarity

Dear Community, can some one clarify/advise me on the below scenario please ?

I am planning to go for Windows Server + RDP CALS + Office 365 Subscription with 10 RDP devices. Around 10 Users will do remote session using rdp devices and use word or excel.

1. As Windows Server 2019 is latest, I will go with that. Now for 10 RDP users/devices, I will go for 10 RDP CALS. So, am I still need to buy Windows Server 2019 User/Server CALS separately ?

2. 'Office 365 Home' subscription webpage says 'Share with your entire family – for up to 6 people' In that case is it enough if I buy two subscriptions for 10 users?

Thanks is advance.

Publish RemoteApp into a Remote Desktop Hosted Desktop

Hello,

I'm currently building up a Geo-LoadBalanced RDS farm for a client, where almost all users connects to the farm with DellWyse 3040. Everything going well so far.

I need to publish a RemoteApp to the hosted desktop as this RemoteApp is a very high resource consumer.

I was planning on having 2 collections in my farm, one for the Remote Desktops, and the other for this RemoteApp. I've configured a GPO for configuring the "Work Ressources" to the RDSH of the Desktop Collection to get the App directly displayed in the StartMenu of my users.

The remote app is well displayed, (or I can get it from an access to the http://url/RDWeb) but when I launch this RemoteApp, I have an error message displayed "Internal error occurred".

Any thought on the feasability ? And on the way to achieve this configuration ?

Cheers

30.10.2019 I found some problem with connecting via RDP to server 2008 R2. Sometimes it works sometimes doesn't. Restarting TerminalServices helps.

There wasn't any updates or changes on server before problem. There are same problem with all of my three Server2008R2. It doesn't matter if I am trying with Windows 7 or 10 or Mac.

Does anybody find same problem or even get a solution?

Hello friends,

We use Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard as a terminal server.

When we try to connect to users' screens, we get the following error.

This problem started after you install the following updates.

Which update might have caused this?

Can you help me solve this problem?

There is a gap in the connection, works when space is removed.

GP with RDP access in place not working on new win10pro v1903 computers

Hi,

I am noticing that an RDP GP on server 2016 DC no longer seems to be working properly on new windows 10 pro v1903 computers in a domain... I found that the slider for rdp in systems settings of windows 10 shows as off and not on like on existing computers where rdp still works.. I have had to unjoin the computers from the domain.. manually turn the slider to on and rejoin the computer to the domain to have it work again..

anyone know why this is or if a change needs to be made to the GP?

One Remote App shows RDP Icon and not its own in the Taskbar

Hy, we work with Remote Apps on an Terminal-Server 2019.

We have one App for xpecto and one for sFirm. When we pin the icon to the Taskbar they shows its icon.

But when we start the App the sFirm Icon shows the RDP icon and not the icon from sFirm. By xpecto this works right?

How can we change the icon, the users dont know, that the sfirm app is startet and start the app again..

RDP/TS - Printing Error

$

Hi,

Not sure if this is the correct place to post regarding my issue, it's related to Printing/Printer Redirection on Remote Desktop Services!

We have a Remote Desktop Server which day to day operates perfect. It's running Server 2016 DC, recently installed.

We have been having this issue which either happens each day or every two days. We have printer redirection enabled and it works fine, however at some point during the day the server continues redirecting printers. When trying to print however the following error appears:

The document Print Document, owned by <user>, failed to print on printer OfficePrinter (redirected 14). Try to print the document again, or restart the print spooler.
Data type: RAW. Size of the spool file in bytes: 1015048. Number of bytes printed: 0. Total number of pages in the document: 1. Number of pages printed: 0. Client computer: \\APP1. Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 2147500037. Unspecified error

Another error I seen was the below, which appears multiple times too.

Application popup: Windows - Application Error : The instruction at 0x00007FFA5C56E616 referenced memory at 0x0000000000000074. The memory could not be read.

Click on OK to terminate the program

I did notice when going into Devices and Printers on the Remote Desktop Server the 'Computer/Server' has a status of "Device Setup in Progress" - I noticed the "Device Setup Manager" service was running - which should only be triggered when needed, tried to stop and restart the service however with no luck.

I have tried restarting the Print Spooler, with no difference I also checked to see if we are using  Type 3 or Type 4 drivers as I read Type 4 can cause these kind of issues.

The resolution at the moment, is to get users to log off and restart and this fixes it for a period of time!

If anyone has some ideas or anything to try/look into, please let me know!

Thanks,

Adam

User Profile Disk cannot delete cached profile eventid 1533 svchost.exe

$

I have a RDS farm consisting of several Server 2012 R2 session hosts. I'm utilizing user profile disks and folder redirection.

The problem is as follows:

When a user logs off a session on one of the RDS session hosts, an eventID 1530 is logged, followed by an eventID 1533. The user's locally cached profile remains on C:\User of the session host with only the links to the folders that are specified in the user profile disk configuration (everything checked in "store only the following folders on the user profile disk").

Running process monitor (on the RDS session host) after the user has logged off the session host shows that svshost.exe still had open handles to the top level folders in the user's temporary profile:

So, the result of this behavior is that the next time the user connects to that RDS session host, a new local profile directory is created "c:\users\username.000", "c:\users\username.001", etc.

This is quite problematic because we are utilizing Google's G-Suite Outlook Sync connector and it would appear that at least some of the configuration for that points to hard-coded paths starting with "c:\users\username\", so if the cached profile is mounted in another folder, like "c:\users\username.000" Outlook cannot load the G-Suite profile.

I don't understand what is causing these handles to remain open after the user logs out of the session. The handles that remain open include:

c:\users\username\Appdata\Local

c:\users\username\Appdata\Roaming

c:\users\username\Desktop

c:\users\username\Documents

The only way to actually delete the local cached profile folder is to either force these handles closed (via process explorer) or reboot the RDS session host server, after which the locked folder can be deleted.

Has anybody else encountered this behaviour? It makes the setup with user profile disks unusable.

[Forum FAQ] “Unable to connect to the server by using Windows PowerShell Remoting” error while installing RDS roles on Server 2012 R2

$
0
0

When you try to install RDS role on server 2012 R2 using standard deployment, this issue may occur (Figure 1).

“Unable to connect to the server by using Windows PowerShell remoting”.

Figure 1: Unable to connect to the server by using Windows PowerShell remoting

First of all, we need to verify the configurations as it suggested:

1. The server must be available by using Windows PowerShell remotely.

2. The server must be joined to a domain.

3. The server must be running at least Windows Server 2012 R2.

4. The currently logged on user must be a member of the local Administrators group on the server.

5. Remote Desktop Services connections must be enabled by using Group Policy.

In addition, we need to check if the “Windows Remote Management “service is running and related firewall exceptions have been created for WinRM listener.

To enabling PowerShell remoting, we can run this PowerShell command as administrator (Figure 2).

Enable-PSRemoting -Force

Figure 2: Enable PowerShell Remoting

However, if issue persists, we need to check whether it has enough memory to work.

By default, remote shell allots only 150 MB of memory. If we have IIS or SharePoint App pool, 150 MB of memory is not sufficient to perform the remoting task. Therefore, we need to increase the memory via the PowerShell command below:

Set-Item WSMan:\localhost\Shell\MaxMemoryPerShellMB 1000

Then, you need to restart the server and the issue should be resolved.

You can get more information regarding Remote Troubleshooting by below link:

If you need further assistance, welcome to post your questions in the RDS forum.

RDS per user CALs - Backwards compatible?

$

0

Hi

I was under the impression that CALs were backwards compatible. We are in the process of upgrading all Windows Server 2008R2 machines to Windows server 2016. Our citrix target devices are 2008R2 with about 1200 users connecting to Citrix and therefore each consuming a per user CAL. Our CALs were split half and half up to now, one half 2008R2 and the other half 2012 R2 per user CALs. On the remote desktop licensing manager i noticed that the 2008R2 sessions were not able to use the 2012 R2 CALs, instead a 2008R2 CAL was assigned and therefore showed as under licensed by twice the amount (the 2012R2 licenses remained unallocated)

Today I began the upgrade and installed 2016 CALs onto a new Windows Server 2016 machine. RDP sessions to 2016 machines consume these CALs fine but the 2008R2/2012R2 connections don't seem to pick it up, instead it installs a new license onto the licensing manager but no licenses are installed and total licenses are set at 0 with a few allocated.

Has anyone came across this before?

Hi,

All our win 10 1903 clients, immediately after been updated from 1803 to 1903 start repeating keystrokes in remote apps. Servers are 2012 R2. RemoteFX cannot be disabled on session hosts servers since that solution causes problems to some of the apps running. Any one facing the same problem ? Any solution?
