Black Screen on RDP Host After Windows update to 1909

$

When I try to connect using RDP the host screen turns black and remains black after remote client disconnects.  If I then try to reconnect, the remote shows the same black screen as the host.    If I disconnect the remote and retry connection I continue to get black screen unless I delete credentials and manually enter the same password as was previously saved.  The connection is then shows the actual screen.

However, when remote client is disconnected the host remains stuck on black screen and unresponsive to any keyboard input.   Cntl+Alt+Delete does nothing.  The monitor power light is blue which indicates the monitor is not in a sleep mode, but display is hung on black.  The only way I have found to bring it back is to hold the power off button for 10 seconds, then restart.

I have tried:

-reverting back to the Microsoft generic driver by deleting display driver
 -booting in safe mode
-doing a clean boot with all services disabled except Microsoft, Intel and Acer, plus all startup programs except for core essential
-disabling persistent bitmap caching on client machine in RDP experience tab
 -changing colors to 24 bit
-changing Local Policy on host machine [Use WDDM graphics display driver for Remote Desktop Connections] to Disabled.

I have also tried all the suggestions at this link
https://www.kapilarya.com/fix-black-screen-with-remote-desktop-in-windows-10

...except for installing the suggested patch because that patch seems to be for 1903

I had the same problem with an earlier build but there was a patch that fixed it.  But with the latest update, it's back.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Installing RDS on Server 2019

I currently have 2008R2 TS server. I have purchased new RDS cals for 2019 and a server license.

I have the RDS cals installed on the license server ok.

What roles do I need to install for RDS. I have selected the quick setup for RDS in Add Roles Features but this installed Remote Apps and Web Gateway.

I dont require these roles, I would just like a Sessions host server as it will be internal only for around 10 users.

Is this possible? Can the apps and gateway be removed?

Many thanks

Check Health status from RDS Farm

Hi all,

We have made a RDS Farm to deploy a Virtual App. After configuring the roles, we have this structure:

  • server1 - RDBroker/RDGateway/RDWeb access
  • server2 - RDBroker/RDGateway/RDWeb access
  • server3 - RDLicensing/RDSH
  • server4 - RDLicensing/RDSH
  • server5 - RDSH

server 1 and 2 are in DMZ VLAN, and server 3, 4 and 5 in midd VLAN. To publish our public DNS, we use a pool into VIP F5 that balance the connections with Round Robin mode and assign a static public IP to this DNS.

All roles are in HA: RD bróker have a DNS RR register with the server 1 and 2 IP, RDGateway is duplicated on both servers, RD Web Access and IIS is installed on both servers and the RDSH role is blanacing via RDBokrer service.

The question is: Is possible to check the health status of every role (RD Gateway, RD Bróker and RD Web Access) to remove of the F5 pool the machine when some role is out of service in a server1 or 2 ?

Thanks!

Setting up Remote Desktop Services for my small business

$

Hi Im cracking my head here to implement a remote desktop services in my small business for employees to open up session based desktop connections. On premises of course, all local connections. And i keep seeing this coming up on google suggestions saying that i can buy "Windows Server Remote Desktop Services CAL". Im just looking to operate my business locally without all that fancy features like desktopApp or licensing. I just need to create local users, have Windows load a remote desktop environment for that user to connect to, and voila my employee can use both client computer and host computer on their monitor(s).

Is there a possibility for this without buying any extra licensing feature? I already have a legal copy of Windows Server 2019, i seriously don't think i need to purchase another $500 odd for this bull.

And if this is the case, I also have Windows Server 2016 and does Server 2016 need to purchase this licensing thing?

Cheers

Hi

We installed the roles on one server and enabled user profile disks, then we uninstalled the roles. Now when a user remotes to the server user profile disks are still being used.

Is there a way to stop them being used?

RemoteApp - Reconnecting to a Disconnected Session on RDSH Server

Hello,

I am currently evaluating RemoteApp to deliver applications to our roaming users. It is working well.

However, whenever user reconnects, it creates a new session rather than hooking up to a disconnected session. My requirement is that till the time a disconnected session does not end, user must reconnect to their corresponding disconnected sessions only.

I have tried configuring following Group Policy Settings on the Session Host Server, but could not achieve the objective:

  • Automatic reconnection = Enabled
  • Configure keep-alive connection interval = 30 mins
  • Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Service session = Enabled

Request if someone can guide me about some missing configuration to achieve the objective.

Thanks,

Amit Jogi

Black Screen for Users in RDS 2016

Windows Server 2016 RDS setup with one DC and 3 session host servers, all running as VMs under Citrix XenServer. This is a session-based deployment for RDP sessions.

Occasionally (that means approx every 7-10 days), new users logging in to RDS get a
black screen. That is, they can successfully log in but then see only a black screen, no task bar, nothing. Users can see moving mouse cursor, and they can bring up the Task Mgr with Ctrl+Alt+End. Sometimes, after 10-15 minutes the user desktop becomes visible, but most of the
time it never does.

Normally, every additional user logging in after this occured also gets the black screen. The only solution is to reboot this session host server.

The servers are updated to PT (July 2018).

Note - I installed an additional session host server recently and noticed that this phenomena does not seem to happen on that one (at least not as frequent). Same update status but was installed from later download media (evaluation edition download from internet, then converted to Standard edition by inputting a license). They do, however, all show the same build number in the settings app: 14393.2248.

So is it recommended to make a new install for all session host servers? Do not really understand why I would have to do that. They have the same update level, just one was installed from a later base media - but it's the same edition. Doesn't a server end up with an identical setup no matter what original media file was used, with all the updates? That should be the point of the updates, or not?

Or is there any other underlying reason for the black screen phenomenon which I should address?

Cannot connect to Remote Desktop from Android (error 0x1307), but I can from a Windows PC

Using Group Policy Editor, I have added Administrators into Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment\Deny access to this computer from the network. This is to make sure that file sharing users cannot bypass the NTFS rights. However, I want members of the Administrators group to be able to login interactively using Remote Desktop. It works from Windows PCs, but not from Microsoft RD Client for Android, where I get the following error message:

  • We couldn't connect to the remote PC because the admin has restricted the type of logon that you may use. Ask you admin or tech support for help. Error code: 0x1307

I can connect from Android only if I remove that policy.

Any ideas?

Logon rds application vs. Logon Windows Server GUI

Hi,

I installed rds on a Windows Server 2016 and a Remote Desktop Application (exe)

User are in remote desktop user group.

The user is allowed to start an rds application through a rdp file from a client  computer.

The User is not allowed to  Logon to the desktop of the server.

I need a script/ mechanism which check's weather (1) the User logon via starting  my application or (2) logon on Windows desktop.
In Case the user starts to logon the desktop (2) if have to refuse/stop/hinder the logon

(i see, that in case the user logon starting my application(1), rdshell.exe ist running)
Perhaps there are other, easier indicators for deciding where the Logon comes from.

Any ideas?

Thank you in advanced

Windows 2016 and 2008 r2 RDS issue

I have the following:

RDS Gateway = Windows 2016

TS server = Windows 2008 R2

TS Server2 = Windows 2016

I get into the RD webpage without issue, there lies 2 RDP published apps pointing to 2 different servers.

When the icons are launched and authentication box appears, domain credentials are put in, and the error stated below comes up.

End users can access the gateway without issue, when they select the TS Server RDP icons they get the following error:

RemoteApp Disconnected - Your computer can't connect to the Remote Desktop Gateway server. Contact your network administrator for assistance.

The TS connection is set to maximum, everything else is set correctly to. I have read all the articles I can find and it has not resolved the issue, is there something I am missing?

RDP stuck at "Configuring Remote Session" WS2016

$

Hi. We have a new WS2016 RDS deployment (VMs on Hyper-V):

 - 2x WS2016 RDGW in NLB

 - 2x RDCB in HA configuration

 - couple RDSH servers

The problem is that in 30-50% of the connection attempts via these gateways, the connection is stuck at the "Configuring remote session" message. The connection is never successfully estabilished when this happens and it is closed without any error couple minutes later. When you try again (or just immediatelly cancel the connection and reconnect), the connection may or may not go through.

When this problem happens, I can see there's single HTTP connection on the RDGW that accepted the connection with 0 bytes transferred in either direction. There are no related errors at this time.

Can anyone help? Btw. this problem also happens when connecting to a different single-host RDS deployment through these gateways.

I suspected the problem might be in the NLB, but removing either of the gateways from the NLB configuration (and from RDS farm) doesn't help, the issue is still there.

Rebooting the gateways helps for a short while (hours), but then the issue is back.

There are some other errors on the gateways, but these don't correlate to the connection attempts (event 210, source terminalservices-gateway: "Http transport: IN channel could not find a corresponding OUT channel" with no other details).

RDP clients are various ... W8.1, W10, Mac...

Server 2012 R2 RDS sessions keep disconnecting

$

Hi there

Having issues with an RDS connection to a new 2012 R2 Server, fully updated, issue occurs to all Clients simultaneously. Sometimes brief disconnection (2 - 3 seconds) sometimes a lot longer.

Already performed the "keep alive=1" group policy hack but still happening.

Event ID40 reason codes 0 and 5 mainly - yet my licensing all checks out OK? I have 50 RDS cals but only 7 users - Ive split them into 25 per device and 25 per user to see if it makes any difference (No)

However The License diagnoser  states that ZERO licenses have been issued? Is this a problem? Too much of a Noob to know myself.

many thanks

Will 2012 CAL works on Windows 2016 RD Licensing Server?

$

Hi Experts,

This project just dropped on our face and we need to prepare things fast.  One thing we need to confirm is this.  Will 2012 CAL works on Windows 2016 RD Licensing Server?  Client's new environment has a Windows 2016 RD Licensing Server and their old RD Licensing Server is a Windows 2012 with 2012 CALs on it.  If it works, we can migrate it this way, correct?  Please advise.

Thank you so much in advanced!!

are we able to set up VPN through the router for six users to log in to the server at same time if there are no RDS licenses? Or can we set up VPN directly to six computers desktops using the router.

Windows 10 Remote Desktop Session Randomly Unexpectedly Exits and Terminates all apps - please help!

$

I remote desktop to my Window 10 Surface laptop via LAN (to use Outlook from the laptop) allowing me to create send/emails on the Surface laptop via remote desktop from my desktop PC. This has been working fine for 2+ years. Recently the Surface 10 has started ending the remote desktop session randomly perhaps 2 or 3 times per day. The worst parts is that it also terminates all running applications so when I can finally remote desktop back in my Outlook sessions have been lost. This is frustrating as I have lost a lot of drafted emails.

(I’ve setup Outlook to save every 1 minute but even so sometimes I lose the active email I'm working on in Outlook or recently received emails - I've lost lots of work because of this - it is driving me crazy.)

If I try to immediately log back in via RDP I sometimes get:

The number of connections to this computer is limited and all connections are in use right now. Try connecting later or contact your system administrator

I wait and try again and I can log back in but all my applications have been terminated. Perhaps the user session is being logged out and back in – I can’t tell.

Why on earth would all apps be terminated - it's as if the Surface computer user session is logged out and terminates all running apps for absolutely no reason.

There are no failed attempts in System Event Log Security, only forced log off. I noticed over 100 Audit Success security events at same time:

Credential Manager credentials were read.
Subject:
    Security ID: DOMAIN\My Name
    Account Name: My Name
    Account Domain: DOMAIN
    Logon ID: 0x1A293A3D8
    Read Operation: Enumerate Credentials
This event occurs when a user performs a read operation on stored credentials in Credential Manager.

This is then followed with:

An account was logged off.
Logon Type: 3

This event is generated when a logon session is destroyed.
It may be positively correlated with a logon event using the Logon ID value.
Logon IDs are only unique between reboots on the same computer.

Windows System Events at arounds this time shows a number of Errors:

Hello colleagues

When we are doing such config (enable multiple sessions per user):

Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\ Connections

Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session     Disabled

We are not able to reconnect to any disconnected session that was running previously.

It seems that it was mentioned here for Inside build, but we have same...

Any solutions for this problem?

Can't connect to RDP on Windows Server 2016

Hi,

We have a Server 2016 with Remote Desktop Services enable but we can't connect to it anymore (it worked before).

We tried a lot of things already but not solved it yet. It seems the RDS isn't accepting connections on port 3389.

- telnet to it on port 3389 not working

- ping does work

- verified the port setting in registry

- rebooted the server

- added a separate rule to allow 3389 always

- netstat -an doesn't show an listening port on 3389

Someone an idea?

RDS Security and Configuration

$

Hello All,

We have deployed a new RDS environment with Server 2019. We have also Incorporated MFA with this new deployment. Since windows 7 support is about to end we have decided to only allow TLS 1.2. I have configured all of our servers in the environment with only this protocol enabled and I have enabled only GCM TLS 1.2 ciphers, as the CBC ciphers no longer provide forward security. Once I had everything configured I stated testing. I could connect no problem from any of the following OS's: Windows 10, Android 9, and Mac IOS. The only OS I had a problem with was Windows 10. Go figure. When the user signed out of the desktop the screen would stay black. The user would have to open task manager on their machine and end the RDP task to resolve the issue. I checked the Gateway server while the screen was black to see if the connection was hanging open or something and no it was not. According to the connection manager and the logs the user was logged out and the connection was closed successfully. After some testing I found the only way to resolve the black screen after log off issue was to enable the following cipher:

TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA

or its 128 counterpart. This removes the forward security aspect from my server and can allow a person to compromise the site or credentials at a later time.

I have not found a way to use better security and continue to use RDS reliably. I will continue testing; however, if someone has any information about this I would greatly appreciate it. If I find something I will post back.

Thanks,

Scott
