Virtual Windows 10 on HyperV remote display adapter crashing

We are having repeated problems the last couple weeks with being unable to RDP to a virtual Windows 10 1909 PC running on HyperV Windows Server 2016. It will not respond when we try to RDP to it and then when I get on the console and try to log on, I just get a black screen after logging on and have to reset the virtual PC. After the reset, we can RDP to it fine for a while, until the problem occurs again later. In searching the event logs I found the following errors. I couldn't find anything else in the event logs that looked like a problem. The fixes for this talk about updating video drivers but the only video drivers are Microsoft Hyper-V Video and Microsoft Remote Display Adapter. The 3D video driver in HyperV is not installed (I saw online as a fix for this issue was to remove it). I checked and there were no updates available in device manager for the video drivers. I was working on the PC this afternoon when I was bumped out of my RDP session and when I checked the event log, I saw the below 2 errors had happened right when I was bumped out. What is causing this and how can I fix it?

RDS 2019 after rename via Set-RDPPublishedName can't open published apps anymore

Hi,

we are running one RDS2019 server.

internal FQDN:    rds2019.ourdomain.com

external FQDN:   service.ourdomain.com

installed certificate: service.ourdomain.com

Gateway service is installed and connection broker is set to external FQDN.

Login to rdweb works fine. If you start any published app it shows up both servers on the RDP connection. So the connection drops due to the fact that on the certficate only the external name is published.

Now we've changed the internal FQDN via the script. Looks great. On the RDP both servers have the same name - but... Can't sign in anymore during the app start.

The Kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server

and

The program lsass.exe, with the assigned process ID 720, could not authenticate locally by using the target name TERMSRV/service.ourdomain.com. The target name used is not valid. A target name should refer to one of the local computer names, for example, the DNS host name.

Any suggestions?

Remote Desktop Group

We have a Remote Desktop Server 2012, Do users need to be in the local Remote Desktop Users group on the RDS server to be able to logon to RDS, or is this permission set in RDS itself?

Thanks

RDS with Azure Azure Load Balancer

Hello,

I have configured a RDS (Terminal Server) on windows server 2019 on Azure. I have created a load balancer as im going to make the broker HA later.

At the Azure load balancer I have both server inside an Availability Set and I can access the rd web page without any problem.

The problem start here.:

I need now to make the broker HA, add a second server. I have created a Azure SQL and the connection with the database is ok, but when I add the load balancer name to the dns cluster is giving error as it seems that is not resolving the dns name.

From the cmd I can resolve the name of the load balancer as it has DNS record but the broker can’t resolve it.

The configuration that I have made on the load balancer rules.

Im using only private IP, no server has public IP.

Maybe I need to allow any special port on the load balancer so that the broker can resolve the dns name?

sorry but im a bit new on this..

thank you

RDSH Licensing - per user - duplicates (lowercase/uppercase accounts)

Hi,

To whom it may concern at Microsoft,

I just wan to inform that my RD licensing server contains many duplicates in the form of <MyDomain>\<user> and <Mydomain>\<USER>.

Since it seems no to be a blocking issue, I won't spend time to cleanup that mess.

But, if someone at Microsoft has time to look into that issue and integrate a fix in a forthcoming patch. Just to keep things tidy...

Cheers

RD Broker does not reconnect to a disconnected session

Hello
We have a problem connecting users to disconnected sessions.

Test Farm Server 2019 with all lastest updates:

2 x RDGW and Web Access (nlb)

2 x RD Broker (nlb)

3 x RD Session Hosts

1 SQL Server 2008

User profile disks

GP:

Configure keep-alive connection interval 1m

Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session Enable

All internal and external users:

Connect session OK. Close session by cross on rdp client (not logoff)

After disconnecting the user and trying to reconnect, the Broker connects to another RDSH server.

Events:

RD Connection Broker received connection request for user .
Hints in the RDP file (TSV URL) = tsv://MS Terminal Services Plugin.1.rds_coll
Initial Application = NULL
Call came from Redirector Server = rdcb02
Redirector is configured as Virtual machine redirector

RD Connection Broker successfully processed the connection request for user . Redirection info:
Target Name = RDSH01
Target IP Address = 172.30.3.10
Target Netbios = RDSH01
Target FQDN = rdsh01
Disconnected Session Found = 0x0

After 5 min

This connection request has timed out. User could not log on to the end point within the alloted time. Remote Desktop Connection Broker will stop monitoring this connection request.

Try to reconnect

RD Connection Broker successfully processed the connection request for user . Redirection info:

Why not Disconnected Session Found = 0x1, RD broker not found session.

Remote Desktop Services Best Practices

Hey Guys, first post so I apologize if this is hidden somewhere in another forum.  Our company is looking to create standards for user sessions using RDG.  I've been doing some research but can't identify anything solid as to what the best practices would be for user sessions.  Particularly looking to identify the policies below.  If anyone has examples on how you've set this up for your company, any feedback is welcome.  I understand each has their own belief on what is correct for best practices but I'm looking to get a starting point.

Set time limit for disconnected sessions Set time limit for active but idle Remote Desktop Services sessions Set time limit for active Remote Desktop Services sessions Time before screen lock

Hello everyone)

There was such a problem.

There is a farm (2 brokers, 12 hosts, a gate). There are published applications. When you open the application, 2 shortcuts appear on the taskbar in user machines. 1 - mstsc, 2 - published application.

Connection goes through RDGW. I don’t understand which way to dig. The problem is mildly floating.
For some employees this is present (Win7-10), for some not.

Maybe someone has already encountered a similar ...?

User gets Access Denied launching remote app after working without a problem previously

Looking for some assistance in starting to debug an issue which is causing a lot of user frustration. We have a small scale Remote Desktop Services. Single management server and singe session host server.

Users can login to the RD Web Access and launch a remote app without an issue and work as normal. All of a sudden at some point in the day or on another day after disconnecting and reconnecting they now get a Access Denied message when launching the remote app and logging in.

The only way to resolve this issue is by rebooting the session host server. We have now resorted to rebooting the session host server every evening but still get the issue appearing at some point later in the day around 17:00.

We cannot see anything obvious in the event logs.

Many thanks in advance for any assistance or guidance.

RD Gateway credentials persistence: Logon Session

$

I'm using a domain connected Windows 10 1703 computer. When I save my RD Gateway credentials, windows saves them in the Credential manager with a Persistence of Logon Session. So when I log out or shut down, next time I log in again, I have to re-enter them. Anyone have any idea how to set the persistence to Local Computer so I don't have to enter my credentials every day?

Credentials for specific machines that I RDP to are stored with a persistence of Local Computer, so they persist different logins.  it's just the RD Gateway creds that get wiped out each time I log out.

We don't have any group policies related to RD Gateway.

Thanks.

Cannot select RDS deployment - Session-based desktop deployment

Hi,

I'm trying to install RDS in a Session-based deployment, but this option is greyed out. I'm trying to setup a pilot server as RDS in Server 2012 is fairly new to us.

I start the RDS role installation the usual way:
-Add role or feature
-RDS install
-Select the existing connection broker in our organization. This was previously setup by a colleague and I can't vouch for it
-Choose Standard deployment....
and now the only choice I have is the virtual machine-based deployment.

When I try via. Powershell, I get the following:
New-SessionDeployment -ConnectionBroker adfs01.company.com -SessionHost corpsched02.company.com
New-SessionDeployment : A session-based desktop deployment is already present.
At line:1 char:1
+ New-SessionDeployment -ConnectionBroker adfs01.company.com -SessionHost co ...

RDS Licensing Server consolidation

We've two RDS Licensing Servers.

Server A - Windows Server 2019 acting as a RDS Licensing server with its own License Server ID & installed RDS CAL's

Server B - Windows Server 2016 acting as a RDS Licensing server with its own License Server ID & installed RDS CAL's

Can I merge both the servers to one.

I need to move RDS CAL's from Server B to Server A(which has existing RDS CAL's & of course has its own License Server ID)

Then eventually decommission Server B.

I do understand the process of migrating from one RDS Licensing server to a new server but here I'm talking about consolidating it to one

Thanks

Unable to publish applications

When attempting to publish an application using server manager on our RDS Broker Server, we are receiving the follow error message "Could not create a published application instance on the server" in event viewer. We have not had this issue in the past, although the last time I published an app on this 2016 standard server is over a year. The existing published applications are running as expected. The default web site on the server has a valid wild card certificate installed. I attempted to publish the notes and wordpad applications, and received the same error.

I also tried using powershell and received a similar message:

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

MAC OS and connecting to Microsoft VDI desktop through external Gateway

$

Hi guys,

I am just seeing if anyone has got this working.

I have a VDI environment that is working well, I have external user connect via a gateway to the VDI environment using RSA authentication.

What I am having an issue with is MAC OS, system. I have downloaded the Microsoft RDP client and installed on Mac Systems. The machine can connect to the Gateway and Webserver. Then can authenticate with RSA and logon to the VDI environment. Yet when they download the RDP file it ends up just connecting to the Gateway host name. Not to the VDI environment. So it looks like the VDI gateway is not being configured on the Microsoft MAC RDP client.

Has anyone got this working, or know who to get MAC connecting directly to the VDI Desktop through a VDI Gateway with RSA. Please note if I manually configure that gateway I can get this working but that does not use RSA 2FA.

Thanks for your time in Advance

Remote Desktop to Always On VPN client

I have a number of Always On VPN clients (using system tunnels) configured at our site...and it would be helpful to be able to connect via remote desktop to the Always On VPN clients for remote diagnostics/maintenance.

Is there a way to register the Always On VPN system tunnel interface as a potential interface for RDP services to listen on? The following registry locations do not have entries for the Always On VPN tunnel:

  • HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\lanatable
  • HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkCards

Using Wireshark to monitor network traffic, I can see traffic is being routed as expected through the VPN connection...it's just a matter of getting the RDP listener to listen on this particular interface and allow the connection.

How to install, setup and configure RDP cal license

$

Hello!

Have bought 2 cals for my Windows server 2012R2, as I then can have 4 connections to my server at the same time. But I can't find any full documentation how to install, setup and configure the RDP so it will work.

Got the license server installed, and the cals activated and installed, but only 2 can connect. Looks like the 2 I bought isn't working right.

Does anybody have a fully step-by-step to get RDP to work right??
