Windows Server 2012 - Sysprep fails if system has RDS role installed. (ACCESS_VIOLATION Exception) ??

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2012 Datacenter image. And I launch sysprep.exe from Windows Service to automate it. So sysprep is executed in quiet as a background process i.e. in "System" account. The sysprep is simple to change the computer name, timezone., etc.

It was working fine till I install the RDS roles. With the RDS roles, sysprep fails with following errors. Though if I execute manually in local administrator account, it works fine. The only difference is execution  in "System Account" as background process rather than "Administrator" context.

I am not sure what is changed in Windows Server 2012 where it works for Windows 2k8R2 RDS.

Please let me know if anyone knows the root cause or any pointers. Let me know if you need detailed info. Appreciate your suggestions.

Sharing ports and drives from client to remote desktop services server

I recently setup a RDS server for my users. The application that I am sharing used to reside on the user's pc. The program makes use of the com ports on the computer. Looking at the client settings on the server, I dont see an option to allow com ports to be redirected. Is this possible? How about if I have the users do a remote desktop connection instead?

Right now I do not enable drives to be redirected from clients to the RemoteApp but as administrator I wanted to test sharing my drive to the server using remote desktop connection but that did not work to the server. If I connect to another one of my administrative PC, the drive redirects properly. Is not having this enabled for my RemoteApp prevent me from also using it using remote desktop connection?

Adding a 2012 r2 server to an SBS 2011 network

I have an established SBS 2011 network. Remote Web Access is activated and works fine. FQDN is: server1.companyname.com

I added a 2012 r2 server (to be used as an RDS server) and have joined it to the network. Name of this server is: server2. I can access the published apps on the server from within the network by going to IE and typing https://server2/rdweb. However, I cannot access the server from the web and although I tried a few different suggested methods from various forums, including wiping and reinstalling the OS twice, I have not been successful. I know I am missing something very important in the setup, not sure what though. And then is the certificate issue.

Is there a step by step process that somebody can help me with, or point me to, to configure the RDS sever to work with the SBS network? I would like to see my users accessing published programs on the RDS server from within and outside the network by using the RemoteApp and Desktop Connection applet.

Thanks in advance.

Silently Remove RemoteApp Web Feed

We are currently running RemoteApp Server 2008 R2 and I'm very comfortable with the concept of silently pushing out the web feed with Powershell and a wcx file. Now we're upgrading to 2012 R2 and want to push out a new URL. However, we need to remove the old one as the new one is being deployed. Is there a way to silently remove the old web feed while simultaneously adding the new feed? This may involve a few Windows 8 clients but (correct me if I'm wrong) I believe that I can at least push out the web feed using the same method (just not sure about the removal). Thank you all in advance for your time!

Script to disconnect old RDGW sessions

Hi all,

I'm having some trouble figuring this out.

We use in my organization several RDGW 2008 R2. We're looking to implement a scheduled script that disconnects sessions or idle sessions which are older than X hours.

Due to several implications, this needs to be done via a script and not regular configuration methods used within the RDGW. Doing this manually through the RD Gateway Manger monitoring window is fairly easy, but since this needs to be done daily it's kinda asks for script-automation.

I've checked this option with power shell, but apparently it might be possible only with the new RD cmdlets that work with RDGW 2012. So my next thought was perhaps VBscript?

Anyone has any idea if what I require is even possible?

Problems with licensing "License server server1 does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes..."

$

I've installed a license server on Server1, and under All servers | Server1, it shows "Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2: Installed TS or RDS Per User CALs" with a Total Licenses of 15. However, if I go to All servers | Server | Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008R2: Installed TS or RDS Per User CALs", there isn't anything showing CALs are installed. All I can do is click the link Generate report, but when I do so, it only brings up help for Remote Desktop Licensing Manager. If I attempt to install licenses under All server | Server 1 | Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, the RD Licensing Manager states the licenses are already installed. Furthermore, when I go to Server2 (which is pointed to Server1 as the licensing server), it says "License server server1 does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes: Product version: Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2".

Can anyone please point me in the right direction? Thanks

Windows 2008r2 - Remote desktop services - Windows search service - Outlook 2010 Search

Hi guys ,

Situation is like this

Windows 2008r2 server with terminal services installed. This is a pure remote desktop server.

The Windows search service is installed via server manager

Office 2010 installed (with Outlook 2010).

My customer wanted to "always search files names & content" , so i enabled Windows Search.

I can now search the file names and content in file explorer but Outlook instant search is broken. I always get the message "

"Search results may be incomplete because items are still being indexed. Click here for more details".

I am running the outlook 2010 in cached mode , so the ost-files are available.

What do i need to check to have my users have both the search files & content and search function in Outlook ?

RDP printing problem windows server 2012

Heeey,

I have a problem with printing over RDP at our server.

the sittuation:

I am logged on on my laptop (not a part of the domain neither i want it to be), and i am logged in to the server over RDP (remote app). But i cant seem to print anything neither over the normal RDP (non remote app) by trying the "print test page". when i do this i just get the error at printing queue calt: error - print.

The only way i can print is locally (the printer is connected through USB)

The solutions i have tried but failed:

- Dissable easy print (when i put easy print on all my print request get auto deleted from the print queue if there is a sollution for this i would gladly hear it)

- Installing the exact same driver version on server and client

- Change group pollicy for only redirecting and showing the default printer (i did this of the slight change that there were too manny port used, saidly this didn't do anything from me)

- Printing with a remote app, or logging in as administrator and printing from a .txt file even did the "print test page", every thing i print ends up the same.

- restarting print spool, restarting the server, installing any windows update that weren't installed.

I really hope someone can help me with this i am kinda despirate at this point.

With regards

Adam Hadi (crysishc4l)

Single Server VDI?

I'm just getting started with VDI and wish to install all services on a single Hi Spec server.

The idea is to push it out to about 10 users within the organisation who need a bit of extra processing power for certain applications.

Can I install all required VDI services onto one machine??

How can users change DPI and Font settings in session based RDP?

$

How can I allow users to chose their own DPI and Font settings in a session-based win 2008 R2 environment?

I used to block control panel access by GPO (User Configuration\Policies\Control Panel\Prohibit Access = true).

Today, I enabled "Show only Specific Control Panel items", and allowed the Microsoft.Personalization item in the control panel. (See http://go.Microsoft.Com/fwlink/?LinkID=122973)

But making this change requires administrator privileges and changed the DPI for all users.

Thanks.

Full screen issue when utilizing Ease of Use on screen keyboard and RDP in Win8.1

Hello,

I am exploring using touch technology with our point of sale application which is delivered to our clients using RDP.  The default touch keyboard in Win8 is basically useless for our application so we enabled the touch keyboard under Ease of Use (EoU) which does meet our requirements.   We enabled the KB in docked mode so it is always displayed and locked to the bottom of the display.  The issue is that when we start an RDP session in full screen mode, the RDP session is using the whole screen and slipping under the docked EoU KB.  Is there a means to have RDP recognize the reduced screen size with the EoU KB docked and only use the available screen real estate?  I understand that I can configure the RDP settings manually and approximate what I'm looking for but this drops the session into a window which is somethibg I'm looking to avoid.

User Profile Disks - Administator Accounts

Is there any way to exclude Admins from having a User Profile disk in RDS?

I would like to logon to my RDS servers as a Domain Admin and simply have a user profile created for the account (in the traditional way). Otherwise, when I log on to different  RDS servers in the farm as Admin I get issues relating to temporary profiles being created.

Custom RDWeb Page

Hi All,

I've tried to follow the guide here (Can't seem to post a link but from Google I typed "RemoteApp and Desktop Connection Feed Extensibility") on creating a custom Default2.aspx page to display RemoteApp Resources using the WebFeed extensibility. When I launch the page I am redirected to login, which I do and then I get this error:

Error occurred ~ Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1.

From reading online it seems like this is where the problem happens:

HttpContext.Current.Server.Execute("..//webfeed.aspx", stringWriter);
                connectionXml = stringWriter.ToString();

However I am unsure where to go from here. If I open up the webfeed.aspx page I can definitely see all the resources available in the xml feed.

Anyone have an idea or seen this before?

Thanks!

rdp cannot consistently connect to a windows server 2008 R2

Up until about 2 weeks ago, I was able to login to our Windows Server 2008 R2 every time using RDP. But now only rarely am I able to login now.

This is on a remote network with a fixed IP address. I can VNC into a macintosh on the same network and then using MS Mac RDP client, get to the same server consistently.

I checked, and nothing was installed on the server via Windows Update.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Craig

Edited: I can ping and tracert to the IP address and to the named server.

list Remote Desktop Services Profiles with Powershell

$

I have about 500 users.  Some of them have a remote desktop services profile set and some do not.  How can I use Powershell to create a list of each user and his/her Remote Desktop Services Profile?   I'm not too picky about how it handles users without an RDS profile (whether it lists them or omits them); I simply need to verify where all the users that do have RDS profiles are getting them.

I have run across scripts that are designed to change one user's RDS profile path, but I want to list the profile path and list it in bulk for all my users.  I do not anticipate needing to change very many at this point.

Thank you very much for your help with this.

Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop problem

$

We have the following problem which I have been investigating on and off for some time.

One of our DCs (Server 2008 R2) failed catastrophically (we could not log in to it at all) and had to be restored from backup. Everything appeared to work normally except that we could not initially use remote desktop to connect to it for administration (at all).

We were getting an error message that the “remote desktop services activex control (mstscax.dll) does not match the version of the client shell”. After some research I fixed this by copying the relevant file from our other DC.

We could now connect to the DC using RDP (domain admin account), but as soon as we enable “negotiate” or TLS, or tick the NLA box we cannot connect (the connection is dropped and an error message tells us that the connection was unable to authenticate). Whilst we have been working with RDP for the time being I would obviously like to restore the more secure connections.

When the connection is refused, the DC has an event TermDD 56, but none of the documentation and solutions that I could find for this error has made any difference. The error information is as follows:

Log Name:     System

I suspect that we probably have another corrupt file related to the Remote Desktop Protocol, but I don’t have a list of the relevant files. I would like to replace each relevant file one by one with copies from our “known good” DC.

Things that I know don’t fix it:

New certificates from our root CA.

Anything to do with the remote desktop users group (not relevant since we are using Domain Admin credentials).

Remote Desktop Services role (not installed and never has been).

Things that I am suspicious of:

DCOM/COM – the initial crash occurred when we attempted to modify the following policies from our default domain policy:

DCOM: Machine Access Restrictions in Security Descriptor Definition Language (SDDL) syntax

DCOM: Machine Launch Restrictions in Security Descriptor Definition Language (SDDL) syntax

(The settings mangled this DC without adversely affecting the other).

Any suggestions appreciated.

Wrong WM_LBUTTONUP message on RemoteApp

$

So we have a problem with one of our programs (we are the developers). The program is VC++ with MFC, if that helps.

This program works great on both local or normal RDP sessions.

But *only* when on a remoteapp (remoteapplicationmode:i:1) we get this very bizarre problem:

In one part of our program, even when you hold the left button (WM_LBUTTONDOWN) you get immediately a (WM_LBUTTONUP)

I checked our code and cannot find anything that would do that, and the fact that it only fails when in remoteapp mode, makes me think there must be something different when handling messages in this mode.

We have 2012 servers up to date and Win8.1 client up to date too, but we can reproduce in different servers and clients.

Any ideas of what we may be missing here?

Thanks

Windows 7 Pro 64bit SP1 client stopped printing from RDWEB published app

Have a machine that is Windows 7 Pro SP1 64bit. It connects to a Windows Server 2012 remotely using RDWEB. there are two apps published, one being notepad, the other is a program the company uses.

The local printer is a Konica C200.  The PC is connected to it via an IP address, not direct cable.  the drivers on the PC hav ebeen updated to the latest driver.  Windows updates have been done as well.

The PC can print from word, notepad on the PC itself, or any other program that is run locally.

The issue is that the RDWEB print to the local machine worked for a day and no longer will work.  The printer shows in the print options for the two published apps correctly as a redirect#.

There are 2 other machines in the same location that work just fine with the same setup.  I also tried turning off the firewall on the PC to see if that helped and it did not.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

link microsoft account to domain account to use windows store on RDSH

I cannot for the life of me find a way to create new or link existing Microsoft Account to a domain account when logged in to Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Session Host.

All documentation I found points to charms > settings > change pc settings > accounts then click "Connect to a Microsoft Account".

I see the button on my Windows 8.1 PC but not from my client's 2012 R2 RDSH. The Desktop Experience is installed. The Windows Store is not disabled via Group Policy.

Here's the screenshot from the server:

Virtual Server 2012 on Hyper-v.  Windows Sounds work with Windows applications (errors, beeps, alarms) but we have an application where the error sound is very useful for end users.  Server 2008 (Virtual), 8.1, 7, Vista, XP all work.  How can I get Windows 2012 to play the error sounds from our application?
