Terminal Server Licensing Problems with GPO Security Group License Server

$

Hello,

I have two fresh installs of W2K12R2.

One is RD Session Host and the other one is the License Server. Everything is fine until I active the GPO Security Group License Server. After that the License Server gives no licenses to die clients (we have User und Device CALs). TS Licensing Diagnostic’s shows no errors, the number of available licenses is displayed correctly, even the state of GPO Security Group License Server is correctly shown as "active" and die Membership in the Group "RDS-Endpointserver" is "Yes". Eventlog shows no Errors. Log in on the session host is even possible, maybe because the RDS-Service is in evaluation time.

If the GPO Security Group License Server is disabled again, the server starts to serve licenses as expected.

I don’t know what I can do anymore, never had problems with exact the same setup under W2K8, but with W2K12 is the second time I notice this issue.

Thanks for your ideas,

Andreas

using an RDP connection to connect to RDS

Hi,

I'm trying to setup  Remote desktop services.

its all working over the web interface but i need to get it working over an RDP connection.

the problem is what do you put in the "computer name" of the rdp connection.

it works if i put one of the session host servers in the computer name but i'm now testing failover, so when i power off the session host server i had in computer name it no longer works. I can put in the second session host server name but realistically i cant ask users to change session host names, plus how would they know what computer name to put in anyway.

i tried putting the colleciton name in but that does nothing. tried messing with farm settings in gateway manager but not sure what i'm doing there.

anyone know how to get around this?

thanks

Colm

RDS Servers Virtual Memory is low

Hello All,

I have managed to setup an RDS Farm with Windows server  2008 R2 .

Basically everything works fine , connected to domain and so on.

I have 3 Physical host sessions servers with 32GB Memory installed on each. They are all running 2008 server 64x. I have about 10 Users which I published a remote apps ( Internet explorer, Google chrome and outlook 2013 )

The problem :

Sometimes, all of a sudden, clients are disconnected from the server and get the error :

"Your computer does not have enough virtual memory available." ( Screenshot is attached )

What could be the reason for that error? Which computer is running out of memory? The remote computer or the local One?

If further information is needed please tell.

Please help .

Thanks in Advance!

2008 r2 RDP SSL NLA problem "Local Security Authority cannot be contacted"

$

Hi!

I have run into an issue with RDP settings for 2008 R2 servers (all of them) whenever I enable NLA. That happens on user accounts that do NOT enforce password expiration (and so passwords are not expired) and MSTSC supporting NLA (client computers are win7 or win8).

In fact those same clients can use NLA just fine for connections to other win7/win8 workstations (domain members) using NLA, no probs!

SSL certificates are automatically issued by enterprise CA. All computers/servers have current and valid Computer certificates.

For some strange reason, I cannot enable NLA on RDP settings for any of 2008 R2 servers (various roles, ranging from physical DC running multiple roles, through dedicated virtual DC or dedicated virtual Print Servers up to dedicated Remote Desktop Services host), because all of them at once stop accepting RDP connections, always with same error message:

An authentication error has occurred.
The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted

Remote computer: server.domain.local
This could be due to an expired password.
Please update your password if it has expired.
For assistance, contact your administrator or technical support.
That same message also appears on DC (2008 R2) running the enterprise CA role ... irony ...

Please keep in mind that domain member computers running windows 7 x64 or windows 8.1 x64 can accept NLA enabled and SSL encrypted RDP traffic at same time without issues while using the same user accounts to connect.

To make it even funnier, I can set RDP on 2008 R2 acting as Remote Desktop Services server to accept only SSL RDP traffic and keep NLA disabled and all works just fine. So, it is strictly the NLA causing trouble here, but why? WS 2008 R2 unable to use Kerberos authentication for RDP?

WS 2012 R2 can accept NLA/SSL RDP connections without trouble, just as win7/win8 workstations can, so issue is narrowed down to only 2008 R2 servers (physical or virtual).

Is there a hotfix for this problem on 2008 R2? sounds to me like it is a bug in 2008 r2 regarding Kerberos authentication for RDP... is MS ever planning to fix it or we have to upgrade all servers to 2012R2 to "fix it" ...

I got 1 licensing server, where I have installed these licenses and pointed all other servers to it.

Thanks

RDS and incorrect session ID

Just discovered a problem trying to shadow thin client terminals on newly installed 2012 Server R2.

In Server Manager, if I select Shadow, I receive the message "The session ID does not specify a valid session"

If I run the powershell command mstsc /v:<server name> /shadow:<session ID> I get the same.

When I list the RDP sessions it displays them as session ID 6 and 7

If I run the mstsc command line and use session number 4 it actually will connect to the desired terminal???

Somehow it looks like the incorrect session ID is being reported.

Anyone else experience this??? Very frustrating....

Can not connect to remote App

We have a RD gateway 2008 R2 and a remote App server 2012 R2. Clients use the web access to launch the remote app that connects them through the gateway to the remote app server.

Upon connecting they get a "RemoteApp disconnected - your computer can connect to the remote computer because an error occurred on the remote computer".

I  have noticed that there is an "add in" that is downloaded and run when logging into the remote app site. It shows an icon in the system tray. If I exit that add in then they are able to connect just fine. The name of the Add-in is called"Workspace runtime - connected to remoteApp and desktop connections".

There are nothing in events logs stating their connection have been rejected or that the client attempted to connect to either the gateway or the remote app server.

This happens does not happen on all clients. The clients I have seen it happening run windows 7, windows 7 SP1 and windows 8.

Anything that can be done to fix this, or is there a way I can force the site not to run the "Workspace runtime" application when users sign in?

Slowness when connecting to RemoteApp configured in Windows 2008 R2 Server using RDP file

$

Dear All,

When connecting to a RemoteApp configured in Windows 2008 R2 with less privileged user it takes ~20 seconds to connect.

Initial connection toapplication takes about 20-30 seconds and once loaded, subsequent RemoteApp connection takes 2-3 seconds. i.e. if there is a disconnected session available in the server it connects quickly otherwise it takes long time.

I am seeing this issue with Windows 2008 Server, when I connect to a Windows 2012 Server RemoteApp gets connected quickly. Also if I try with higher privileged user (like RemoteAdmin) connection is quick. The user I am trying is having lot of group policies set to limit user access to file system, desktop and registries.

If I keep UAC settings to minimal level connection happens quickly(i.e. solves this issue). But I am not supposed to change the server UAC setting. It seems this has something to do with the list of group policies set for the user.

Any suggestion to avoid this first time connection delay for less privileged users for connecting to RemoteApp (in Windows 2008 Server).

Thanks

Quesions about setting up small RDSH cluster

$

I'm presently researching hardware for setting up a new vSphere cluster, to include several RDSH-related servers.

We anticipate 35-50 users to start.

I know the RDSH roles are:

RD Session Host – provides the actual apps, this will be provisioned with sufficient vCPU and RAM

RD Connection Broker – load balancing of RDSH servers, manages all reconnections

RD Web Access – offers apps from RDSH server

RD Licensing – manages RDSH access licensing

RD Gateway – manages external access to internal apps

1) Which RDSH roles can be safely combined together into one server??

2) Is it reasonable to plan for two gateway servers for redundancy (dns round robin)??

3) Two hosts should be enough to serve applications for 35-50 users??

4) Can the published apps interact with other apps on the PC or if the publiched apps are accessed during a XenApp session, can the published apps interact with the apps installed to XenApp?? For example, if the accounting software is an RDSH published app and they start the app, can the accounting software communicate in any way with Outlook or Excel on the user's PC or XenApp desktop?? The published apps will come from a different domain I think...

I hope I asked #4 properly.

5) Should RD licensing be placed upon one of the domain controllers instead of upon any of the RDS cluster servers??

Anything else I should know??

Thank you, Tom

I need help with Terminal Services between Win 8 and Server 2008 R2 if anyone knows! COM port redirection is not working! I've got it enabled in the RDP icon on the client as well asComputer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Serviceson both the client and the server (Do not allow COM port redirection set to disabled) and RDP-Tcp Properties (Client Settings all unchecked).

Anyone got any ideas?

Remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license

$

I am using a VPS account (from a service provider) on a Window 2008 32 bit Standard Edition server.

All of a sudden, I was not able to access my account.

Using RDC with my IP address, administrator ID and password, I reached the server as I see the warning sign, titled (The identity of the remote computer cannot be verified. Do you want to connect anyway.). I clicked Yes. Then, I see the warning sign: "the remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license".

I have not installed any additional licenses, as the account comes with two licenses.

I talked to the Service Provider and the answer was, they can not get into my account to find out why.

Something has happened as I had no problem getting into the account before, and then this happened. I am wondering whether this is related to the License Server they installed and the licenses have expired. If so, how can I get into the account to do any thing or make changes.

I was told to wipe out the site and reinstall the OS. This means I will lose everything. It appears there must be a way to get to the Server Manager to make changes.

I am not knowledgeable in Server Technology, so some hand holding will be appreciated when you make suggestions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello everyone,

I have enabled timezone redirection on for my remote desktop connections but I have the following issue:

I want to have 3 specific users (in the same usergroup) to have a fixed Timezone, because some of the programs I am running there have scheduled tasks and if the time zones keep changing the tasks might never get executed. But give the ability of timezone redirectionto the rest of the users.

I need help and advice.

Thanks!

Remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator."

I am the Server Administrator and have server 2012 Standard running on a single computer for our small (50 employee) company.  It's primary role is to house one software application that manages our data.  Our employees need to remotely access this server to use this software program.  For the last 4 months we have successfully done that using Remote Desktop.

Unfortunately our RDS trial period ran out on our Server, and so I have recently installed 21 RDS User CALs on to the server to still be able to access this server remotely.  When I installed them, using the Install Wizard, I selected 'User CALs' as that is what they are.  However, when I try to use remote desktop and access the server remotely, I get the message: "remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license"

Do I have to install the RDS User CALs as Device CALs instead even though they are USER CALs?? Did I forget to check a box or something?  Please help!  We are a Non-Profit and really can't afford Microsoft's $260 support fee when I have a feeling this has got to be an easy solution.

RDS 2012 Multiple Gateways

Hi all,

In a RDS 2012 R2 setup, is it possible to have two independant gateways (not HA)? One gateway would answer to gateway.xyz.com and the other would answer to gateway.abc.com.  This setup would require two different certificates. Is this possible?

Thanks,

Jesmat

Virtual Server 2012 on Hyper-v.  Windows Sounds work with Windows applications (errors, beeps, alarms) but we have an application where the error sound is very useful for end users.  Server 2008 (Virtual), 8.1, 7, Vista, XP all work.  How can I get Windows 2012 to play the error sounds from our application?

ThinClient -> Farm -> RemoteApp, key-combination CTRL+ALT+UP/DOWN

$

Hi, I hope you can help me.

We have a little phenomenon conecerning RDS and RemoteApps. I'll try to explain the situation as good as possible. If there is anything what's not clear, please just ask.

This is the situation:

USER A connects from a ThinClient (Windows 7 embedded) via mstsc to a RDS-Farm "FARM A" (Site A) (Windows Server 2008 R2 RDSH). From this session USER A opens a RemoteApp on "SERVER B" (Site B) (Windows Server 2008 R2 RDSH).

The RemoteApp on SERVER B is Navision 5 in which it is possible to navigate through the menu with CTRL+ALT+UP and CTRL+ALT+DOWN. But, the navigation with this hotkeys is not possible when the RemoteApp is opened from FARM A. Instead of changing the menu in Navision the RemoteApp becomes inactive (grey window) and nothing happens. And that's the problem.

More tests:

If USER A is opening the same RemoteApp directly from the ThinClient, the key-combination works as expected.

If USER A connects to the RemoteApp server (SERVER B) from FARM A with a normal mstsc session instead of the RemoteApp, then the hotkey works as intended as well.

I already checked the keyboardhook-settings of both RDP-connections, the FARM A file and the RemoteApp File. Both are set to

keyboardhook:i:1

so the key combinations should be recognized as normal on the remote-sessions.

Do you have any ideas?

Is there anything what I could test?

Do you need more information?

Thanks in advance!

How to make an exception to RDS session Idle Time Limit?

$

0

A little bit of background:

We are running WYSE Thin Clients to connect to a RDS server farm at our company. We have set the Idle Session Time Limit to 12 hours, in Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration (in Connection --> Properties --> Sessions tab). This limit is a site requirement.

The issue: We would like to configure a few accounts to stay logged into the RDS server indefinitely, past the 12 hour limit. How can we do this without changing the time limit for everyone?

I have tried a script to simulate mouse movements/key presses at intervals on the client session to trick RDS, but Remote Desktop Service Manager does not show that the script affects the idle time for that client. Is there another automatic way to simulate user input to keep the client session active? What kind of hardware interrupt is RDS hooking into to determine that a human input has been pressed? A script would be the least intrusive to our infrastructure so if it is possible this is definitely preferred.

I've heard that Group Policy may be a solution here - but our local IT department do not have admin access to the Domain Controller for our site, it is managed by a third party. However, if I were to solve this using group policy, what would be the steps? I would appreciate a step-by-step walk through if it is possible. We would have hundreds of users that need the 12 hour limit applied, and only a few that needs the infinite logon - so please keep practicality in mind.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps.
