Window Search issues - Windows 2012 R2 RDS session host

Hi

I have a problem with a Windows 2012 R2 U1 RDS host session server.
Server is updated with latest updates.
Office 2013 32bit is installed per best practice.
Several other softwares are installed as well.
Installations was made using "change user /install"
Several GPOs are in place to restrict user from doing things like se drives start, Not run any exe files that are not allowed etc.
It is only one server and all userprofiles are local.
Outlook is used with cached exchange mode.

To the actual problem. Intermittently and with no pattern something happens that are related to "Windows Search" service.
The symptoms are one, or more, of the following.
1. Some or all icons on desktop become white.
2. Open My Computer freezes for about a minute up to a couple of minutes showing nothing.
3. Search doesn't work.
4. Tiles on the start screen becomes unresponsive and I cannot search here either. I have to logon into another session and either kill explorer.exe
for the frozen user or restart Windows Search service.

When this happens it is like this for everyone and restarting Windows Search service clears it every time.
I also get Event ID 10023 and 10024 with Source Search.
I have tried to rebuild the index to no avail.
I get the notion that it has something to do with .OST files but I'm not sure of this.
The only thing that can be confirmed is that the error happens a lot more when there are more users logged on.

There are no other addins in Outlook other than standard.

Anyone have any ideas how I can continue troubleshooting this?

RDS Collection Status Unknown

I realize that there is a similar thread in the forums about this already, but I have tried recreating the collections as suggested in that thread and it didn't solve the issue, so I'm asking the question again. I had one of my connection brokers crash today and since that time, all of my collections are showing an unknown status:

I am able to interact with the collections through PowerShell and the desktops appear to be functioning correctly, insomuch as users can connect to them without issue. However, they aren't listed under the Collections node in Server Manager and I can't manage them from Server Manager. This is a production system so I can do anything too crazy to test or fix it without some planning, but I was hoping that someone has experienced this issue (apart from the person in the aforementioned thread) and has a good solution for me.

My environment is Windows 2012 R2.

Issue with W2012R2 RDBroker running as DC

I am running a Windows 2012 R2 Server with the following Roles:
HyperV, Active Directory Domain Controller, Remote Desktop Broker

I have 3 VMs running as classroom VMs

Part of setting up a Remote Desktop Farm, you must add the farm members to the Session Directory Computers Local Group on the Remote Desktop Broker. But my server is a domain controller and has no Local Groups.

In 2008 documentation, it mentions there will be a domain group. I can not find this group anywhere.

Where do I find the Session Directory Computers Group on a server running Active Directory 2012 R2?

RDS 2012 - HTTP & UDP Gateway Connections Reset

$

Hi

I have a single Windows 2012 R2 RDS server, which acts as all the RDS roles, including RD Gateway.

I also have an Windows 2012 R2 IISARR server setup to reverse proxy 443 connections to the server, and have port 3391 open on our firewall to allow UDP connections.

In short, if I connect using an RDP 8 client, I get three connections as expected. One HTTP and two UDP. If I connect using an RDP 7 client, I get one RPC-HTTP connection, again as expected.

The problem is that whereas the RPC-HTTP connection is stable, the HTTP & UDP connections disconnect every 2-5 minutes. The client screen goes black and a Reconnect Attempt 1/20 windows is displayed. Each time though the connection re-establishes itself and the session is not reset.

In the gateway manager, monitoring page, you can witness these connections disconnecting and re-connecting. It's very puzzling. The event logs acknowledge the disconnect, stating reason 0.

On the Windows 8 clients, I've tried the recent hotfix 2897602 and tried turning off Windows Location Services. But that doesn't help.

I've read a lot about UDP and RDP8, with some saying it doesn't work properly and that you should turn it off. However, I have it turned on as I was having problems scrolling PDF files in the remote session, which the UDP connections fixed.

Any help with this would be much appreciated. I've done so much research and spent so much time on it...

Thanks

Andrew

Discover Terminal Services Licensing Server

Hi,

We need to discover terminal server in our environment. There are some clients which are already using terminal services. Whenever we enable any new server to use terminal services it didn't discover it automatically. We even didn't have sufficient information of terminal server, IP, computer name etc.

Is there any way we can find the information of terminal server from clients already using terminal services?

What's the recommended practice on logging errors from custom built applications hosted on Terminal Servers.

Hi,

We have custom built applications which are now hosted on Windows Terminal Servers.

We are looking for recommendation on logging. Is it advisable to use a shared NAS folder or make use of event log on individual servers?

Thanks,

GDI object limits and application crashes

$

We've developed a Windows Forms based system in VS 2010 using the .NET 3.5 framework, SQL server and a few 3rd party controls. A new client has recently implemented our software and are deploying it to their users on a number of Windows Server 2012 RDS servers.

After a few months of production usage, we are getting a few users reporting that the system is crashing once or twice a day with 'Out of Memory' errors where the application displays a red cross through one or all of the controls on the form they are using (see below).

We've asked the users to monitor memory usage and GDI object usage for our application and provide details at the time of any crashes. So far they have reported memory usage of around 1GB (for our process only) and GDI objects of around 2000 when crashes occur. My understanding is that Windows should allow up to 10,000 GDI objects per process - so we are well under the limit. Is that limit applicable for Windows 2012 RDS sessions?

Any information or ideas much appreciated.

Hello,

I have a RemoteApp environment running in server 2012 using a dedicated License Server. On my license server i am seeing more and more of the following events:

The review configuration is not returning any errors and i don't hear no reports of users not being able to connect or get a license assigned to them.

I havent been able to find much online about these specific errors. Anybody have any idea on what is causing this or how i can resolve these errors?

Thank you all

SSO and what to expect in RDS 2012R2 with Windows 7 sp1 clients

$

Good Day,

We are about ready to take our RDS 2012 r2 Farm to production and I am wondering if the way SSO is currently working is as good as I can expect.

Right now when we access the site (from a domain joined Windows 7 sp1 machine), apps.mydomain.com, it prompts for a username and password. If I enter them and put a check box in that this is a private computer, it then does not prompt again.

If I remember correctly, our TS 2008 (RDS 2008) environment, did not ask for that initial set of credentials, but instead was truly single sign on. Is this the best I can do? Is it possible to go to the URL and have your domain credentials pass from your workstation to the site without having to access them the first time?

To enable SSO, the administrator needs to add the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the RD Connection Broker server (with a “TERMSRV/” prefix) to the server list of the corresponding Credentials Delegation Group Policy setting. I entered both TERMSRV/* AND TERMSRV/APPS.MYDOMAIN.COM

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Credentials Delegation
Allow Delegating Default Credentials: Enable–Then enter the FQDN of the server.

In addition, for web SSO to work with RD Gateway, select the Use RD Gateway credentials for remote computers check box, and set theLogon method to Password Authentication are the steps that I have taken to make our RDS 2012R2 SSO:

I also entered my Cert thumbprints which did resolve the second cert warning dialog so that now when I launch and RDS Remote App it opens without warning.

index out-of-range failure while installing RD services on server 2012r2

windows 2012r2 server with all the updates etc done, system not setup as DC, hyper-V installed. installed tesla m2090 and K

Went to Server manager's roles and features wizard to add RD services (connection broker, web access, virtualization host role service).  Aim was to utilize graphics card with hyper-V.  However, the attempt results in "Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection.  Parameter name: index"  error message under RD Connection broker role service installation -- failed, it follows that RD web access role service and RD virtualization host role service were cancelled.

Now I feel stuck -- will welcome any comment.  Thanks!

RDS 2012 Deployment guide

Hi,

I'm looking for a RDS 2012 Deployment Guide or best practices document but not finding it.  Basically I'm looking for the equivalent of the document below but for Server 2012 R2 instead of 2008 R2

<won't let me add link to body yet>

We are planning a new RDS implementation and want to make sure we get the environment and resources right from the beginning.  Initially I'm mainly curious about the recommendations on how many servers are needed and which roles can be combined on single servers and which need to be broken out onto their own boxes.  For example is it best to have the RD Gateway and the RD Web Access roles on their own individual servers or should/can they be combined on to one box in the DMZ?  If separate; can one of them also double as the connection broker?  That sort of thing.

Any help is appreciated.  Thanks

Wrong certificate in RDS Deployment 2012 R2

$

Hi all!

I've just deployed RDS in my lab-enviroment and its working as it should (as far as I can see) internally. Now, im trying to get it to work externaly using a RDS-gateway. Currently, its possible to access the RDweb-server, authenticate and I can see the published application in the webportal. I click on one of the applications and get the Remoteapp dialog box, specifying my remotecomputer and gateway to the correct external name. I then press connect and get a windows-security prompt asking me for credentials. Here I see the INTERNAL name of the gateway-server (that also host the broker and webaccess-services) and when I enter credentials i get a message saying that:

(Translated from swedish)

"The computer cant connect to the remote computer due to the adress of the remote desktop gateway and the name of the certificate do not match"

My first though was that the certificate was the correct one and that the gateway was trying to connect on the internal name instead of the external. But, for some reason the certificate seems to be published by my router? At least it seems so when I look at the certificate.

How is this possible and what can I do to sort it?

FYI:

My internal domain name is: xxxx.local
My external domain name is: xxxx.se
The certificate im getting is configured like: xxxx.<routerddns>.com

Any suggestions?

How do you manage RDS session timeouts with Windows Server 2012?

I'm having difficulty finding where to change session timeouts and other session parameters with RDS in Windows Server 2012. I know that tsconfig was removed between versions of RDS and that configuration was moved into the RDMS console, but I can't find session config variables in RDMS.

TS Licensing Validity / More RDP Users / Alternative Option

Hi. What is the Validity for TS Licensing in 2008 server? Is there any other way to increase maximum number of users RDP?

Is there any alternative method? Is VPN is better option for Multiple users access?

Scenario : Server 2008 (Inventory Application Installed) ----> RDP Users Created ----> Cant access more than 2 users simultaneoulsy ----> Added TS and TS Licensing Roles (120 Days Grace Period I reckon) ----> Unchecked " Restrict Users" option on RDP Propoerties

Trust problem through RD Gateway?

$

Here's my setup:

Server 2012 R2 RDs Services
RD Gateway, RD Web, RD Sessions hosts, of course.
Two-way trust from our domain to an external domain is setup and verified.

In my domain I created a group called "trust-dom Users" and I put the trusted domain users into that group.
I assigned that group rights to connect to the RD Gateway
In the RD Servers group policy I added the group to Policies->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policies/User Rights Management->Allow log on through Terminal Services
I also went into properties of each RD server and added the group to the who can access the server under "remote settings"

Local users to the domain can login just fine. I can't seem to get the domain trusted users to authenticate. I can go to the gateway via RDWeb and authenticate just fine. Just not against the RD session hosts.

I'm still testing a bit so I may have updated information later but if anyone can advise me as to where to look that would be great.

Getting Client Name in Remote Desktop Manager for Server 2012 R2

Remote Desktop Manager appears to have been replaced or moved in Server 2012 to Server Manager. It doesn't really matter to me where this is located, however I don't seem to have all of the features that were in Remote Desktop Manager (2008 R2). The biggest one that I need is to be able to tell what computer each RDS user is logged in from. We use this quite often so we can remote into that users computer for troubleshooting.

Does anybody know how to obtain this information in Server 2012 R2? If it's not possible in Server Manager, can it be done with Powershell? A 3rd party application?

So far the only way I have been able to do this is if there is still a 2008 R2 server on the network. I can log into it and use Remote Desktop Manager to connect to the 2012 R2 server. Since a 2008 server can still obtain this information for a 2012 server there must be a way to achieve this.

Thanks in advance!

MS Patch KB2976627 Java ActiveX version control and how it affects RDS sessions

$

The recent patch for MS to prevent IE from using older versions of Java ActiveX seems to put a version file under %localappdata% and pull this file from the Internet.  My questions are:

1.  How does this work when you are using a mandatory profile for RDS users?

2.  We don't allow internet access to the RDS servers/sessions.  How does that affect this whole process?

I'm quite confused how this patch works with RDS overall, so any explanation is appreciated.

Restrict domain users' access to items during RDS session??

We are building a new RDS cluster and need to restrict the following (or prevent access):

This is a Windows 2012 R2 Update 1 RDS cluster.

1) not allow right-click to Start Menu or show ONLY the log off (Sign out) item

2) not show the Apps menu or restrict what is shown on the Apps menu

How do we do this?? Does Group Policy offer settings for this??

Thank you, Tom
