Remote Desktop Protocol 8.0 update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (KB2592687) breaks context menus (right-click and ribbon dropdowns) for RemoteApp Office 2010

Within a day of installing update KB2592687, I had reports of context menus appearing for a fraction of a second then disappearing on RemoteApp session with Office 2010 applications, including Outlook, OneNote, and Word.  On most clients, this problem was not observed at the beginning of a session.  The delay varied from minutes to hours.  Based on internet searching, this appeared to be an office plug-in or install corruption issue.  After repairing Office, modifying registeries, reinstalling Office, and deleting user profiles, I tried removing the KB2592687 update, which only seemed related to the problem because of when it was installed.  Removing KB2592687 appears to fix the problem, based on the last 24 hours.  No one else seems to be having this problem, or they haven't discovered this new cause.

Server: Win 2008 R2; Office 2010 x64

Clients: Win 7

All computers have the latest Microsoft updates via WSUS.

RDP: The remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license

I have this issue with TS licensing.

Background:

  1. 2008 R2 functional level domain built from 2008 R2 systems
  2. License server activated scoped to the forest: License Manager reports "Activated" and "OK" Status
  3. License server is in the "Terminal Server Licensing Servers" built-in domain group. Added "Network Service" and the Terminal Server computer account to the built-in group during trouble shooting
  4. The "Terminal Server Licensing Servers" has read and write msTS attributes to Domain user accounts
  5. RDP session host configuration discovers License Sever Manager and is configured.
  6. RDP session host server Licensing diagnostics reports no errors
  7. If I stop the RDP licensing service the RDP session Host Diagnostics shows errors. Restart the service Licensing Diagnostics Status reports back it no errors and shows the license server as "Available" in the bottom summery section.
  8. The systems are in a well connected network and on the same subnet.
  9. The only recorded error is Event 1130, TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager: which states a license server is not specified. But is specified in session host configuration

It seems the RDP session host, although configured and connected does not contact the license server for an initial license request.

moving from 2003 TS to 2012 RDS, will older thin clients still work?

We have some older HP thin clients from about 2007, with I think RDP 5.2 which are still working well with an elderly 2003 TS

Will we be able to use them with RDS 2012?

Does anyone have a link to minimum client spec for RDS on 2012?

Windows XP SP3 producing 'unexpected server authentication certificate' error connecting to RemoteApp

Hi

I’m looking for some help.

My problem is exactly the same as that posted by Jeff Rodgers in this post:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverTS/thread/6f29bc2f-5290-426c-a617-f6fbaab9ba9f (Connecting XP to server 2008 (not R2) using RDP broken after KB969084 update installed.)

I have a Windows 2008 R2 server running remote desktop services. The environment that remote sessions are required for is only small here, so all the following roles are insatlled on the same server (let’s call it ‘rds.local’):

Remote Desktop Connection Broker

Remote Desktop Gateway

Remote Desktop Licensing

RemoteApp and Desktop Connection Management

Remote Desktop Server

The‘rds.local’ server has an external certificate purchased from Digicert, with the common name‘rds.external.com’

This certificate is specified in IIS, Remote App Manager, and Remote Session Host Configuration.

All works fine and very smoothly in Windows 7. Clients can connect to‘https://rds.external.com/rdweb’, log on and choose a RemoteApp without having to retype their password. In short, everything as expected including SSO.

It’s a different story for WinXP SP3 though (although SSO also works). These clients have RDP6.1 and CredSSP installed and are fully updated via our WSUS server. Loading a RemoteApp for example only works if I switch the certificate used in Remote Desktop Session Host to ‘Auto Generated’. If I use the rds.external.com certificate from Digicert, Windows XP users get the following error:

‘The connection has been terminated because an unexpected server authentication certificate was received from the remote computer.’

The problem is, as Jeff Rodgers put it:

“The Windows XP SP3 Computers balk at the certificate with "connection has been terminated because an unexpected server authentication certificate was received from the remote computer" Windows 7 and Vista computers work flawlessly in this configuration (Single Sign on). By using the default auto-generated certificate in Remote Session Host Configuration, this prompts certificate warnings to Vista and Windows 7 clients but allows Windows XP Sp3 clients to connect (again with cert warnings but they can click connect).”

So although I have a solution that works, I don’t like the certificate warnings I’m left with (especially on Windows 7 as I know it can work perfectly). I’ve been working on this problem for some time now and have explored lots of avenues. But now I’ve reached a point where I’ve ran out of ideas and I’m thinking that it’s a fundamental problem with XP SP3. But surely there’s a reason behind this…

Any ideas?

Allow multiple, concurrent RDP connections for particular users

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knew how to control the restriction / allowance of multiple RDP sessions at the user level.

Trying to give certain users the capability of connecting concurrently, while restricting others to a single session (via GPO).  At the moment I am not having success, any advice would be appreciated.

Not seeing any improvement from RemoteFX in test Server 2012 VDI configuration

I've set up a test Server 2012 VDI deployment (VMs assigned to users). The VMs are Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 (due to application compatibility issues with Windows 8). My setup consists of the following:

  • Physical Domain Controller server running Server 2012
  • Physical Hyper-V Virtualization Host server running Server 2012, which hosts the following VMs:
  • Virtual "Remote Desktop Services" server running Server 2012 (RD Connection Broker, RD Web Access, RD Licensing)
  • Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 workstation assigned to user
  • Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 workstation assigned to user
  • Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 workstation assigned to user

I've successfully got the VDI environment up and running. Test users connect to their Virtual Desktops through the RD Web Access site on both Windows 7 and Windows 8 workstations, and I'm connecting to my Virtual Desktop through a Wyse R10L thin client.

I'm not really concerned with the lack of Aero in the Virtual Desktops, but I noticed some slowness watching YouTube videos, dragging Windows around, etc. I did some reading on RemoteFX and decided I needed to try it out on a single Virtual Desktop to see the improvement. Because I'm running Windows 7 VMs, my understanding is that the Server 2012 software-based GPU isn't available (only to Windows 8 VMs).

Therefore, I installed an ATI Radeon HD 6450 in the Virtualization Host. This particular machine doesn't have onboard graphics, so I removed the existing video card (wasn't compatible with DirectX 11) when I installed the 6450. I enabled the 6450 for RemoteFX use in the Hyper-V settings, then added the Remote FX 3D Video Adapter to my Windows 7 VM in its Hyper-V settings. I set it to Max 1 monitor with Max 1920x1200 resolution.

I know RemoteFX is enabled, because I can now enable Aero when I connect to my Virtual Desktop. However, I've connected from a Windows 7 desktop, a Windows 8 laptop, and my Wyse R10L thin client. RemoteFX is enabled in all places, but I don't notice any performance increase. I've disabled the Aero theme so it's a fair test (as I don't want the GPU's possible improvements to go only towards transparent windows).

With RemoteFX, I don't notice any difference in dragging windows around, watching YouTube videos/visiting content heavy websites, scrolling, minimizing and maximizing windows, etc. I've disable and re-enabled the RemoteFX adapter on my VM multiple times and really see no noticeable difference.

I'm slightly disappointed, as I was hoping this would bring the experience closer to an actual desktop. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions or tips on why I'm having this issue. My LAN is 100Mbps. Connecting via RDP directly to the VMs doesn't change the performance (compared to connecting through the Connection Broker through RD Web or thin client).

Thanks, I appreciate any help! If you need more information about anything, just let me know!

Unable to open Remote Desktop management from Server Manager

Hi,

After updating licenses, unable to manage 2012 server foundations remote desktop. Remote desktop management service will not start.

Have tried http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverTS/thread/bbf47aa2-8ae5-4f22-9827-afee5a11417a -
1) Connect to \\.\pipe\MICROSOFT##WID\tsql\query using SQL Management Studio.
2) Under Security\Logins, add a new login.
    On the General page:
    Login name: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE
    Default database: RDCms
    On the User Mapping page:
Check RDCms, select the entry and check db_owner.
That's it. All services should start fine now.

But when connecting to the WID database the listed database RDCms is not shown.
Unable to uninstall the remote Desktop services feature as well.

Thanks,

Luis A.

Providing RDS SAL through SPLA to customer with unmanaged/non-outsourced VPS

We are hosting company.

As part of our solution, we provide unmanaged/non-oursourced dedicated virtual server to end customer. This is Windows workgroup server resides on dedicated network, and end customer gets local admin rights to it.

We are SPLA partner.

The customer requested for Remote Desktop licenses.

Is it possible to provide customer with RDS SAL in this scenario?

If yes, how do we control and track the issuance of RDS SAL?

(If we install Licensing Server on the mentioned customer server, he is able to create as much local users for RDS access as the license allows (x5) and we have no control on it)

Pen input over RDS Remote App

We have a client-server application. We want to move it to RemoteApp. It is heavily reliant on handwriting using the Microsoft Ink framework.

The pen input for handwriting is very poor. We have tweaked many things but are not seeing any improvement that would make the software usable in this environment.

We setup everything with Server 2012. Windows 7/8 clients.

Any suggestions on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

RDS 2012 Remote App Active Window not coming to the front

We are working with RDS 2012 and publishing a remote App.  The App has many windows that open within it and a few windows into their session the active window stops coming to the front.  Since this window opens behind the old window the user thinks the app locks up.  If they click off to the side and then open the Remote App window back the windows does come to the front, but this cannot be a solution.

We have tried changing the HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ForegroundFlashCount to 3

and the HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ForegroundLockTimeout  to 0

Anybody else encountered this?

Hello, I want to start a program at logon for a specific user on a Windows Server 2008 R2 (terminal server) in a Domain, changed the settings added the path but nothing happens, the desktop is shown. Found in group policy that the "allways show desktop on connect" policy is active, changed to "not configured". Still no changes. Did the same thing on a Widnows Server 2003 (not in a Domain) and it workes without a problem. What could be the problem ? Thank you. http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/8859/8gic.jpg

Remote Desktop Web Access Remote APP user assignment

$

Hi to all,

we have a NLB Remote Desktop Farm (2 node Windows 2008 r2 SP1) and another server (Windows 2008 r2 sp1 with RDGW, RDWA and RDCB).

The users access the applications via remote desktop web access that are configured with user assignment.

All remote app have a security group associated for to control access to the application on web site.

If we change the user assignment adding or removing some users directly on RemoteAPP manager the change is replicated on web server (RDWA) immediately.

If I try to add o remove a user on the security group associated to the RemoteAPP (from Active Directory Users and Computers)  the change doesn't work or is applied after some time. A reboot of the RDWA resolve immediately the issue.

Can you give me some advice how to resolve the issue or otherwise a possible workaround?
thank you.

Cannot Remote into Hyper-V 2012 Vms

My first time posting here so go easy on me ;)

I have been experiencing a weird issue in regards to using Remote Desktop to remote into VM's hosted on our Windows Server 2012 server. Sometimes I can connect to the VM and run it but it will drop connection over time. I have also done ping tests and I can connect fine but immediately drops after the first ping.

However, for some strange reason I can only remote in only when I highlight the server on Hyper-V Manager and it works just fine. But it kinda defeats the purpose if I have to highlight each server I want to remote into every time I want to access a VM. Due note that this only occurs on VM's running Windows 7 machine.

I have researched about how what could be affecting this, and came across a few things that could be related to this issue:

-Settings in NIC's (Both physical and virtual)

-Virtual Switch Manager - "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter" option is enabled

I'm hoping someone could provide some insight on this issue.

Thank You.

RDS Install - Cannot Install Role Services

Ok, I've read probably hundreds of posts on this, and tried everything they said, but I'm going to post here anyway.

I have two servers running WS2012. I have set up an Active Directory domain on one (standard edition), and successfully joined the domain on the other (datacenter edition). Then I try to install Remote Desktop Services on the server that was joined to the domain (not the domain controller server), but it is unable to install role services.

1. I have tried the quick start and standard deployment. On the quick start, it gets about 1/3 of the way through the first installation, then fails everything. On the standard, it fails and says it was unable to install the broker role service.

2. I have tried installing the role services using powershell on the local server, and then from the other server, and role services could not be installed.

3. The user that is trying these tasks is a member of all user groups on the active directory, including domain admins. This user was also added as a local administrator on both servers.

4. Both servers are on the same network, but using different gateways.

5. When the installation fails, all server roles have management errors that say Online - unable to access role and feature data.

6. Both servers have static IP addresses.

7. I have tried this installation probably 20+ times tweaking the system slightly each time, and nothing has worked.

8. The server for RDS originally had Hyper-V installed, but then I disabled it, then removed it - nothing changed.

If anyone can point me in the right direction here, I'd appreciate it. Once again, my domain controller is on a separate server from the one I am trying to install RDS on.

failed to connect and get error - Remote dekstop Gateway server temporarily unavailable

Hi,

We have Windows 2008 R2 RDS farm internally and publishing RDS Sessions with Windows 2012 RD Gateway. All servers are using valid SSL certificates (public CA signed). XP RDP Client will fail to connect at the first attampted and get the following error:

"Your Computer can't connect to remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway server is temporarily unavailable. Try reconnecting later or contact your network administrator for assistance."

When it failed to connect, if the client "Connect" again without exit out the RDP Client, it will connect successfully.

In addition, the Windows 2012 RD Gateway is dedicated server for publishing the RDS. Therefore, it doesn't not have any 3rd party application and it was a new install.

Thanks very much

WS2012 RDCB

$

Hi. We haven't used connection broker in our previous 2008 R2 RDS environment, but as it is now mandatory in 2012, I'm wondering how to do the following:

When I have a RDCB (non-HA) and a session collection consisting of multiple RDSH servers, where/how do I configure the "farm" DNS name to which the RDP client will connect to? For example, RDSH servers are "server1" and "server2", but I want users to connect to rds.domain.local (which would point to the session collection?) and then RDCB should create and distribute the sessions according to the balancing rules.

Thanks in advance

Server 2012 Won't install RD Session Host

Very frusterated trying to install RDS on a brand new installation of Server 2012 Standard.  A fairly simple and straightforward powershell command (after failing the GUI with the same results) of "Add-WindowsFeature –Name RDS-RD-Server –IncludeAllSubFeature -Reboot" goes through the preliminary steps and then restarts - gets to 64% of "configuring windows features, do not turn off" and does a second reboots touting the message "preparing to configure windows" and then counts to 64% again and the message "failure configuring windows updated reverting changes". pops up which it promptly does returning me to a machine that has RDP access for remote administration only.  I'm really not seeing anything related in the Application, System or Setup log files.  There is nothing special about this system.  It is not a DC nor does it have any other roles and services.  This was the first and only role I installed after a brand new setup and it failed.  It is, a virtual server running on a 2008R2 Hyper-V host but that shouldn't be a problem.  Any thoughts?
