Windows Server 2012 Essentials - Remote Desktop Services

$

Hi Experts,

I was hoping someone would be able to provide me with some guidance.

We have recently purchased Windows Server 2012 Essentials as well as 5 RDP user CALS.

We do not have a domain or any other servers. We only require 5 people from various locations to be able to remotely log into the server and work on a program that is installed on it.

However, the setup and configuration of the Remote Desktop Services did not go as planned. After many attempts and various configuration settings, it still doesn't work.

What I am lead to believe is that the Essentials version of Server 2012 doesn't support being the RDP Gateway and License Server and Host. However, nowhere can I confirm this, I have searched many forums where people are experiencing the same problems, but nowhere can I find answers.

If there is anyone out there that might be able to shed some light and maybe point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,

Wynand.

Hi All,

I cannot seem to configure the option for Remote sessions to be logoff from the TaskManager.  The end user are in the PowerUser/RemoteDesktop Users groups.  I do NOT want them to be in the Local Administrators group.  I have configured the RDP connector to have the Production Support security group form the Domain configured to have Full Control setup.  Which still does not let the users logoff disconnected sessions or end processes on the server.

any insight would be hepful

Unable to delete self-signed certificate from Remote Desktop Services

When I connect to my remote Windows 2012 server using Remote Desktop I am being prompted with "You are connecting to RDP host ...! The certificate was verified through the certificate chain to a self-signed root certificate that was present in the message..." I installed that certificate as part of a test and I now wish to remove it.

To remove it, I followed the instructions at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee890902(v=ws.10).aspx. I delete the certificate using mmc.exe and confirm that it is gone by refreshing and looking in the Remote Desktop certificate folder. It is now empty. Then I restart Remote Desktop Services, which kills my session. So I reconnect and I'm back where I started. Remote Desktop gives me the exact same warning about the certificate and it has reappeared in mmc.exe in the Remote Desktop certificate folder.

How can I permanently delete the certificate?

Thanks in Advance.

Server 2012 R2 TS CAL's are installed but are not being issued

I have a very simple Server 2012 R2 set-up. Just want 5 users to log in on a per user basis.
The same server is the session host and licensing server.

The Users can log into the Terminal server.

The Open Licenses are installed but they will not issue.

RD Licensing Diagnoser has 2 warnings.
1. The licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server is not configured.
And
2. Set the licensing mode on the Remote Desktop Session Host server to either Per User or Per Device. Use RD Licensing Manager to install the corresponding licenses on the license server.

Have Googled and Bing'd this and seems like so many of us are having TS licensing problems, between this and Windows 8.x I have to ask, does Microsoft hate us all!?

Why certificate under Remote desktop -> Certificates shows as untrusted?

Hi,

Can some one please tell me why there is a certificate under Remote desktop ->certificates in certificate store? And why does it shows as not trusted? We don't have CA in our domain.

Certificate shows issued by Server A -> Server A. Looks like self signed certificate? But how does this get generated? Why does it goes under Remote Desktop -> Certificate store and says not trusted?

Thanks,

Umesh.S.K

RDC freezes if left idle

When using Remote Desktop Connection if its left idle (say to answer the phone) the service freezes. And you have to close the session and log back on.

Is there something obvious we have missed in the setup?

2012r2 RDS Host and 2008r2 Licensing Server

Hello

We have a Domain/Forest "A" with a RDS Licensing Server OS 2008r2 (Domain Level 2003).
Now we have a new Domain/Forest "B" (with two-way trust to "A") with a RDS Host server. (OS 2012r2 - Domain Level 2012r2)

I did not manage to connect the new server in "B" with the licensing server in "A".
Error:
The server pool does not match the RD Connection Broker that are in it. Errors:
Cannot connect to any of the specified RD Connection Broker servers. Ensure that at least one server is available and the Remote Desktop Management (rdms), RD Connection Broker (tssdis), or RemoteApp and Desktop Connection (tscpubrpc) services are running.

The licensing server itself is fine, as it manages other RDS Hosts in the "A" domain.

Is it possible at all?

remoteapp on hyper-v windows 8.1 VM fails to display

anyone know why I can't seem to connect to my VM as a remoteapp session?  It prompts me for my credentials and then nothing happens.  The logs say it authenticated property.  I'm running windows 8.1 pro with hyper-v with a VM of win 8.1 pro also. I'm testing by trying to open notepad.

Does this feature not work if the VM is win 8?

I used this guide (and some others): http://www.simpsoncomputers.co.uk/blog/?p=639

I saved a rdp file and edited the following:

remoteapplicationmode:i:1 remoteapplicationprogram:s:||Notepad disableremoteappcapscheck:i:1 alternate shell:s:rdpinit.exe

I also set this value in the VM to 1 (and tried 0 too).

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\TSAppAllowList

then i added an applications key and a notepad name and path string...

2012 RDS Receiving second prompt for password when launching Remote Desktop through RDWeb

I am stumped and need some assistance.

I have a simple 2012 R2 RDS server set up for remote access. The server holds all RDS roles. The server is configured the same way I had configured another server in the thread TP helped me with:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/8c40726d-9dd7-4e4d-ac53-e5634251db6b/server-2012-rdweb-internal-external-domain-name-mismatch?forum=winserverTS#97095157-fc40-4ec1-b8b4-a1793bfe2063

The client who access this server originally wanted to use RDP client, NOT RDWeb. So, they have been using RDP through the gateway. They requested to be prompted for credentials each time they connect. We had a technician try multiple settings to force them to be prompted a while back. Now, I have set up RDWeb, I do not want them using RDP client anymore. The problem is, SSO is broken.

When a user logs in to RDWeb, they are presented with the Remote Desktop icon, and when they click they are prompted for credentials again.

This only happens through RDWeb. If I try to connect through RD Gateway via RDP client, I do not get prompted again.

I have tried deleting and creating a new collection, still the same issue. I think there may be a local security policy in place, or a registry setting forcing this, but the fact that it only happens through RDWeb perplexes me.

After Windows Update: 2008 R2 Server RDS disconnect immediately

Yesterday, I had to patch a 2008 R2 SP1 server. Core installation. Patched to the latest state with windows update. It's about a year ago since the server was patched the last time. RDS is only used in Remote Administration mode.

Now connecting to the server over RDS doesn't work anymore. The connection is established, but immediately disconnected in the same second. Reconfigure RDS Remote connection settings with or without Network Level authetication doesn't make a difference. Have tried with two different users, it doesn't work with both users. The following two events are logged when trying to connect over RDS in the security eventlog:

Any advice? Thank you in advance for any help.

Imagine the following situation

Computer A has an RDP connection to the RDSH on USER1
Computer B makes an RDP connection with the RDSH on USER1

The session is disconnected from computer A because it is "taken over" by Computer B.

Is it possible to get a confirmation here of the session to the other computer may be disconnected?

Can not disconnect session (pooled virtual desktop).

It's a 2012R2 server with win7 pooled virtual desktops. Disk usage of these desktops is somewhy high. They'd used all space at the volume and lost profile disks. After reboot and incrising that volume i've found that the vms where not rebooted but "saved". Users even said there were no reboot. After relogin they managed to work again except one.

I've restarted his vm in collection manualy but server manager still shows the session of this user. I can't disconnect it getting erros "Unable to disconnect session 147 on host.domain. WTS API failed". PS commands return errors too. Can i disconnect this session somehow or reboot of the server is the only option?

Activate 2012 RDS CALS on 2008 R2 automatically

Open License 2012 RDS CALS, I installed remote desktop roles, I then activated the CALS "AUTOMATICALLY." I entered the Authorization Number and License Agreement Number, it contacted Microsoft and bingo, all of my services popped up activated. Checking in RD Licensing Manager, the server is activated and Expiry is "Never." This means the either the License Manager is in error or the "Automatic" activation "downgraded" the 2012 CALS automatically. This contradicts what I have read in 25+ statements from Microsoft or on Technet. Do I have a fully working server? It works but how long will it keep working?

Standalone server, no 2012 server on the network.

RDS on DC or no DC in Hyper-V

I need to have SQL Server 2012 functionality on my website.  I have a copy of SQL Server 2012.  I have installed it on Windows Server 2012 R2 on the first installation.  I have also Remote Desktop Services on that first installation: RD Connection Broker, RD Licensing, RD Web Access, a RD Virtualization Host.  When I decide on a SSL certificate I will be able to install RD Gateway and get it up and running.  I cannot get RD Session Host to install on the first install as expected.

My question is will I be able to have SQL Server 2012 functionality on my website without RD Session Host and the other RDs on the first install or do I have to install all of the RDs including a RD Session Host on a Hyper-V without a Domain Controller?

Second question is how do I access the SQL Server 2012 on Remote Desktop Services Hyper-V in my first installation or other Hyper-Vs?

How do I know if my Licensing server is properly configured for External Connector license

$

We recently acquired some External Connector licenses for RDS 2012 R2. I have tried setting the license server up correctly by configuring it as Per User licensing using this post https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/959fe208-1e05-46e8-8f3d-30f6923ac910/action?threadDisplayName=windowsserver&forum=winserverTS When I go to one of my session hosts I pull up the license disgnoser and I get a warning that the session host is configured for per user licensing but there are no licenses installed on the license server.  The license server is listed correctly.

When I go to the license server and try to add the external connector licenses I get hung up at a screen asking to select the license type.

Under License program I pick Campus agreement because we are a higher ed institution and purchased the external connectors under our annual campus agreement license.  I enter our agreement number and then under Product version I pick Windows Server 2012 as there isn't a 2012 R2 option and then under license type there are only three choices.  RDS Per Device CAL, RDS Per User CAL and VDI Suite Per Device subscription license.

Regardless of what I select I need to enter a quantity.

I read that for external connectors there isn't a license to actually apply to the server.  But if this is the case then why would the session host report the warning.

Terminal Service problem, port 3389 not available, Can not log in serveur with RDP.

Hello.

We have 6 servers for software acces with terminal service. We need to restart the servers each day to questions of stability and server uptime. There are 3 months, we started having problems following the server reboot. Those are no longer available to connect to TS. A simple reboot does not work, the TS service remains unabalable. For it working again, we must put the Terminal Server service by "disabled", reboot the server, restore the service to "Manual" and the start

We had a task to restart the server, "shutdown.exe -r -f". If we use this exe, most of the time, after the reboot, the service is not available, even if it is started. If we do this manually reboot, everything works. We tried the PsShutdown, it worked well 2 weeks, but at some point, it began to stop working as shudown.exe.

We even made a powershell script that disable the service before the reboot and restart after startup. This script is the sequence that we are doing manually for it working. But even with this script, we got the same problem after reboot. I even made it a condition that if 3389 is not available, the server reboot after 15 minutes. It reboot all the last weekend...

These are physical servers Windows 2003 with 24 core and 16 gig RAM. (They will eventually be migrated to 2012, but not before the end of the year). We also look to the teaming network cards, but it does not seem to resolve anything either.

We are now being out of idea for the problem. We have another 4 servers sluster that have the same symptom.

Is there someone who has had this problem? Anyone knows how to solve this problem ???

Tx
