External Remote Desktop Session won't connect Server 2012 R2 (0x8007007A)

Hi forum members, I have a weird issue going on with a high availability Server 2012 R2 setup.

The users of this company are connecting trough Remote Desktop Connection in- and outside the organization. All the inbound connection inside the organization goes perfect, the servers are load-balancing the sessions and uses the two session hosts to connect. The users are connecting with the rds using round robin with hostname remote.customer.com

3389 is open and forwarded to Server 1. The users are able to connected when the connection broker starts a session on Server 1, but when the connection broker starts a session on server 2 we are receiving this error message.
So it's not possible to start a remote desktop connection from external location when the broker is trying to connect with server 2.

If I check the eventviewer on server 2 it shows me the following error: "Failed to create KVP sessions string. Error Code 0x8007007A"

Current setup:

Server 1 Roles:
- RDS Connection Broker
- RDS License Manager/Server (Per device cal)
- RDS Gateway
- Session Host

Server 2 Roles:
- Session Host

Server 3 Roles:
- SQL Connection Broker

The customer uses a per device cal. All the calls are stored on Server 1. I've also forced the License server on Server 2 with a group policy.

Could someone please advise what settings to check and change? Many thanks in advance.

From our remote office, a local Network printer shows as being offline when connected to RDP session.

This has been working for several years, and recently stopped.  We are able to print to it locally from the PCs at the remote office.

From the RDP session, and on the RDP server it shows as being offline.

User Profile Disks on RDS 2012

Hi,

I would like to use this feature but have a question about what type of storage can be used for this feature.

Our storage guys initially gave me a a 1TB share on our TrueNAS system but I when specifying this share in my collection I got an error:  'Unable to enable user disk son UserVHDShare. Could not create the template VHD. Error message: The RPC server is unavailable'

Doing some digging it says that the COMPUTER$ account needs full access rights.

Since this is a share on TrueNAS (ZFS file system that support SMB 4.0) I cannot specify AD accounts or Groups, only local UNIX users.

We then presented an iSCSI disk and I formatted that as NTFS and Windows sees it as a local disk.
That worked.

My questions is:
What re the requirements for UPD when using shares? Does it have to be a volume that can be NTFS formatted?

Font size increasing for RemoteApp (Windows Server 2008 R2)

Hello! Help me please - I have a terminal server (Win 2008 R2 based), 5 users. There are also some RemoteApp applications they are using. But one of users asks to increase font size in this RemoteApp. I increased size to 125% in session but if we try to open RemoteApp (using same credentials, of course) - font size is still 100% (standard size). In spite of this - RDP session for this user shows 125% fonts. And if I will run this application inside RDP-session - all is OK, font is 125%. So problem is only with RemoteApp - it ignores font size changing - don't understand why... What will you suggest to me?

How to enable Remote Assistant in Terminal Session for Guest-type account?

Hello!

When i include AD user in Local "Guest" (because he must not have any rights except Remote Assist) group on server Remote Assistant says me:

[Window Title]
Windows Remote Assistance

[Main Instruction]
There was a problem starting Remote Assistance

[Content]
Remote Assistance is unavailable for the current user account. If you are using a Windows Guest account try logging in with another account. If you are not using a Guest account, try restarting your machine.

[OK]

Is it possible to give some rights for Guest-type account to use MSRA.exe? How?

Maybe there is some special groups for Remote Assistant Users that have rights for only Remote Assistant?

How to enable Outlook Anywhere for Exchange Online in IE within RDS

Hi,

I have a small Win2008r2 RDS setup, 20 CALs.  And currently have ESC enabled to provide some basic protection for users within IE, since there should be almost no circumstances requiring web access within the RDS environment until now.  The office is moving to Office365 and the RDS setup does not require any of the Office tools except occasional email/calendar access.  I would like to setup webmail access on the RDS server.  But would like to keep other use of IE to a minimum.  Has anyone done this?  Just wondering if it can be done and if there is any documentation on how to set it up.  I know at the least there are a bunch of URLs that will need to be allowed in the security areas of IE and that javascript is required.  I am sure there is more.  Thanks for any help.

Hanging UPD profiles in 2012 R2 RDS environment

Hi everybody,
We have a full 2012 R2 environment in Azure consisting of the following RD servers:
1 Broker/Licensing
1 Gateway/Web Access
8 RDSH
The users have User Profile Disks connected to a share on the Fileserver.

From time to time the UPD's will hang on one of the RDSH, causing the users to experience "strange" behaviour in applications on the server like being unable to print from Office applications.

When investigating we'll see Disconnected sessions for users which have logged out of the server:

All users have to log out of the RDSH and we have to close the open UPDs on the Fileserver (they get "stuck"), otherwise they will logon to a new RDSH with a TEMP profile.

After this we need to Shutdown the server in Azure (Restarting or Shutting down the server in Windows won't work) and Start it afterwards.

All will be fine after deleting the User Profiles (which remain in C:\Users).
After a day or so, another or the same server will experience this issue again.

We've implementing rebooting the servers at night hoping this would solve this issue.
It has gotten better since, but still several time a week we'll come across this issue.

Any thoughts?

Kind regards,

Matthijs

RDS 2012 R2 / Load Balancing - Unable to connect external users

Hi,

We have a problem where external users are unable to connect to a RDS Farm of 2 session hosts;

The layout:
RDS01: Licence, gateway, broker, host
RDS02: host

Internally everything is working great. Users are distributed across both hosts, sessions are picked up when they are disconnected etc etc.

Externally it's a disaster; the users are unable to connect. We have configured the firewall to connect to the broker. When we set up a conenction we see that the connection to the broker is made and that the user is succesfully redirected to the correct host. The message "Prepairing the destinaion computer" appears for a couple of seconds followed by "Initializing remote connection". The message is show for about 5 seconds and an authentication window pops up asking for the right permissions.

It looks like the user has no permission on the second host but internally we don't have this issue. Secondly all permissions have been checked and are ok.

W've been add it for a couple of days now, any idea's are more then welcome.

Thx in advance

printer redirection

Hello

- some user connect to a windows server 2008 r2 via terminal services.

- printers redirection is disabled (terminal services configuration)

now i need to let one single user to share his printers

so i re-enabled printer redirection from terminal services configuration and disabled it in user profile for all other users...

unfortunately seems that user setting is ignored: now every user that connects to the server has printer shared.

group policies stay unconfigured

any idea?

Thank you

Server 2012 RDS - User Profile Disks - Errors during Logoff

$

I have set up a test Server 2012 RDS collection (Single Server for now) and implemented User Profile disks.

I have two problems.

First: My generic test user can connect and does successfully use the user profile disk as expected. However, atlogoff, the system event log contains these errors:

The error (NTFS 137) is: The default transaction resource manager on volume C:\Users\ts3.test encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

The warning (NTFS 50) that concerns me is:

It appears that the user profile disk is being "disabled" or "disconnected" before the profile data is completely written at logoff. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Second:

Update: A post from Mike Connor on the following page: -LINK- solved the problem described below.

My administrative user always logs on now with a temporary profile. At the beginning, the UPD was working and mounting. That stopped working. In attempting to troubleshoot, I logged the admin user off and deleted the UPD disk file from the share. I remember it working again after generating a new UPD disk file in the share. Soon, it quit working again. I deleted the UPD disk file again from the share and ever since, it has never regenerated a new UPD andalways logs on with a temporary profile.

Starting a program from a \\tsclient drive is extremly slow in Windows Server 2012 R2

I use to map one of my RDP connection's client drives to a drive letter to start my favorite editor (and tools) from there. Using Windows Server 2008 the editor starts in about 5 seconds (size: ~ 6 MB).
With Windows Server 2012 R2 the start takes about 30 secs(!), while copying the editor's exe to the Windows Server 2012 R2's desktop (using cmd) and starting it from there takes only about 2 secs alltogether.

So far:
- Checked that FIPS is disabled => wasn't
- Tried with Offloading off/on => Nope.

Any suggestions?

Temporary Profiles for some users.

We have a RDS farm that consists of 3 session host servers, a connection broker, and a gateway.  Users log in with a roaming profile saved on a file server.  When they log in, it copies the profile to the session host sever locally, and when they log off, it gets copied back to the file server and the local profile gets deleted.  Lately, some users are logging in with a temp profile.  Besides the obvious drawback of having a temp profile, we found that Lync does not allow the user to have a conference chat (more than 2 people in the chat) when you're using a temp profile.  Since this is something they rely on for business, this issue is now in the front burner.

I did some searching and found something about deleting entries in the registry located here:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

I found the entries associated with the temp profiles and deleted them, but it's not helping.  Also, when users log off, the entries are deleted automatically anyways.  The temp profile folders are also being deleted when the user logs off.

I should also add that I always try to delete profiles using the GUI first (System Properties - User Profiles), and reboot if I cannot (in case some files in the profiles are locked).

Does anyone have a solution to this?

Server 2012 RDS Printers in a pool

$

Ok here is my scenario. We just created a pooled collection. Our users are able to jump on to our print server via unc path and install a printer and print and everything is fine. They then log out and log back in. The machine is a fresh machine but their profile has a connected printer. If they try to use it they get a missing driver. Which asks them to re install which says it works but then it fails to print.

How can i make it so users can manage their own printers in a pooled desktop?!?

RDP session not logging off after application is closed

$

  Hello,

I am trying out RemoteApp in Windows 2008. I managed to publish a simple application, and I am able to connect to it remotely using an .rdp file.
The application works fine, but the issue is that when I close the application on my remote machine, the session just gets disconnected, it doesn't log off. I have tried connecting from different clients, and I get the same result: After I close the application, I can see the disconnected session on the Win2008 server.

How can I make the session to automatically log off after the application is closed by the client ?

        What am I missing ?

Thank you for any suggestion.

User Profile Created Through Terminal Services is Incomplete

$

My organisation has two Citrix XenApp 6.0 servers running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1. We have remote users who create a VPN connection into our corporate network. They then log on to our domain through Citrix.  One of the published applications they can launch is Outlook 2010 Standard. All of our Outlook users, whether they are in-house or remote, connect to their mailbox on our Exchange 2013 servers.

When one of our remote users launches Outlook, its starts to run, but the user is presented with a message stating that the server is unavailable. When the user removes that message, another message stating “unable to open default folders” appears.  The user is unable to progress forward to their mailbox. This issue is affecting only one of our terminal services users.

The user can send and receive e-mail through Exchange ActiveSync on a mobile device. He can also access his mailbox through OWA.  This does not appear to be an Exchange/mailbox issue.

Our terminal services users have roaming profiles stored on one of the Citrix servers. I have removed and re-created the user’s profile, but that has not resolved the issue.

Also, I can see that the new profile is incomplete.  It does not contain all of the folders and files that are present in the profiles of other terminal services users. One of the items that is missing is the Autodiscover.xml file. I copied this file from a backup of the user’s profile.  This made no difference.

I have also tried changing the user’s profile from roaming to local, but that made no difference. I have tried modifying the user’s profile so that it tries to use an alternate autodiscover file, similar to what is suggested in the following article, but that made no difference.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/kristinw/archive/2013/04/19/controlling-outlook-autodiscover-behavior.aspx

I have also verified that the user has the correct proxy server settings in Internet Explorer.

I believe that if I can resolve the problem of an incomplete profile being created and used, the Outlook/autodiscover issue will probably resolve itself. If you have any insights into how to do this, please share them with me.

Internet favorites lost after the profile scrub

Hi,

An user faced the temporary profile problem in connecting to RDS farm.We ran the profile scrub utility which cleans the profile in the list of terminal servers found in the list  given as input to the utility.

After running the script , the user is able to login to the RDS servers without temporary profile issue..  but he is asking now to restore the IE Favorites.

But I think the issue which user is currently reporting is not related to the recent profile scrub which will delete only the locally stored profiles in the list of terminal servers

Any thoughts/help is greatly appreciated!

RD Web + Remoteapp: RDP Files pointing to Connectionbroker

$

Hello everyone,

I created the following RDS Setup:

DC01 = Domaincontroller, RD Licensing, RD Connection Broker in  private subnet

SH01 = RD Sessionhost (not load balanced)  in  private subnet

SH02 = RD Sessionhost (not load balanced) in  private subnet

GW01 = RD Web, RD Gateway in a DMZ

I'm facing some issues with the .rdp files provided by RD Web Server in a remoteApp and Session host deployment. They seem to point to the Connection Broker instead to the Sessiohosts. When I'm opening the .rdp file in a text editor and change the following parameters to:

full address:s:SH01.internaldomain.com (instead of DC01.internaldomain.com)

workspace id:s:SH01.internaldomain.com (instead of DC01.internaldomain.com)

RemoteApp deployment works.

Is there a way (for example a Variable like %Sessionhost%) to have either SH01 or SH02 in these files?

Thank you in advance,

Regards Marc
