Windows 2012 R2 printers showing twice (and unable to set default printer)

$

Hello,

I have a problem that will not just go away. I have two Windows 2012 R2 servers: one with RDS installed for 30 users with an appointment application and one "back-end" server were print queues and database are running.

So basically, users can connect to network printers by clicking on a link that points to the "back-end" server. In Windows 2008 R2, this is so simple but in Windows 2012 R2, I am experiencing tons of issues (with both V3 and V4 drivers). By the way, printer redirection in RDS (remote desktop) is disabled and forbidden by GPOs. I am listing the issues here to see if someone experienced them before:

1. After a disconnection between the printer and the RDP session (the servers are in a remote site as the printers are local and printing through a site-to-site VPN tunnel as they are all IP printers). Example: a power failure will set a particular printer at "offline", which is normal and eventually, it comes back online. But then, the problem starts: the printer "loses" it "default printer" status and none of the printers for a specific user are showing as default printer in his printer list. If I try to set again the desired printer to default, it is already "set as default" but the green "tick" is not showing on the printer icon and printing fails.

2.  When the above happens, I usually try to delete the printer from the user session and reconnect to it. But then, it is even worse: the specified printer is now showing "twice" in the list of "device and printers" for a specific user while working OK for another (when you right click the printer, you see two instances of it). This is interfering with our main application and a specific user session is non functional. A printer will also show in the "unspecified section"

3. Even a bigger problem: if I delete a particular printer from a specific RDS user session, the same printer disappears for all other users using that printer. So each time I try to fix a printer in one user session, I can expect a myriad of issues with the other users.

4. The only way I found to fix this issue (so far) is by rebooting both servers at the end of the day and after power recycling the printer exhibiting the issue. The only other thing I could try (never tried it yet) would be to delete the affected user profile and recreate it on the RDS server. But I do not know yet the consequences of that action (will everyone else lose the defective printer mapping as well???).

5. This issue doesn't seem to be driver or brand related as I had the issue with many printers of different brand. Both servers are virtual under Hyper-v (physical hosts are also Windows 2012 R2) and are running the latest integration version.

If anyone has experienced this issue, please let me know what you have to have done to resolve it. My next step is escalating this to Microsoft.

Thanks.

Benji.

Accessing RemoteApps from Computer outside of the LAN

$

Alright, so I've recently just setup my own RD Web Access and RD Session Host servers. I published some RemoteApps and set up the RD Web Access server to where there is no issues in connectivity when accessing it through its own LAN. My predicament is being able to access the published RemoteApps from another computer that's outside the network. Here's what happens when trying to access the RemoteApps from an outside network:

I can connect to the RD Web Access server, but I have to use this subdomain that I created for remoting into this computer. So, let's say I port forwarded and set up for my external IP to be recognized by the internet as chickens.lovelybusiness.net where"chicken" is my subdomain. That's what I would put into remote desktop connection in order to connect to the computer. Now, I set up the RD Web Access server and the RD Session Host server on the same computer as the computer that's recognized as chickens.lovelybusiness.net. Now, all I should have to do after setting up the servers is just type in computername.chickens.lovelybusiness.net. However, if I type that in, nothing comes up, but if I just type in the chickens.lovelybusiness.net,I can login to the server and see the apps.

Next is the thing that puzzles me, I can see and download the RemoteApps just fine, but as soon as I try to run them, this error pops up.

But, if I go into notepad, open the rdp session I just downloaded to run the app and change the workspace ID and the full address to my external IP address, this error pops up in its place.

Now, I enabled remote connections to all the servers just in case without them needing NLA just to see if that would cause a problem. I also open ports 443, 3389, 80, 49152, and 53 opened so I know that isn't the problem. But as of right now, I'm stumped. All I want to accomplish is to be able to access the published RemoteApps from outside that network.

Any answers or advice would be HIGHLY appreciated.

Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server Event ID 20499

I keep getting Event ID 20499 "Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server \\SERVERNAME for user USERNAME" in our event logs for multiple servers that are running 2012 R2

I noticed that when this happens the user often is missing items that get applied via group policies such as desktop wallpapers and mapped drives.

I am also using the Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac that was release yesterday on another Mac computer and for certain users it won't launch the redirected folder that I specified when I get this Event ID 20499

Time Zone error message

Hello

We are experiencing an issue with our Win 2012 R2 RDS setup.  We are using this to run Dynamics NAV for a number of locations.  Just adding our Sweden location but we are having a problem with Swedish users when trying to switch databases.  They receive the following error message:

'The time zone with ID 'vasteuropa, normaltid' was not recognised on the server.  Update your computers time zone definitions'

We had exactly the same issue with our 2008 RDS system and the following hotfix resolved the issue:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2870165

The hotfix does not mention Win 2012 and I could not find anything for 2012.  Should I use the same hotfix for 2012?

Has anybody experienced this issue and have a solution?

Thanks

Nick

RDS Licenses available not being issued to new users

Hello,

I have a WIndows Server 2012 STD with Remote Destop Services configured.

RD Licensing Role - Host1

RD Session Host - RDS1

RD Session Host - RDS2

RD Connection Broker - Host2

RD Gateway - Host2

RD Web Access Host2

I have 25 per User CALs. My report shows 28 Issued, but my Licensing manager shows 5 available. Also 3 Users do not seem to have a license issue, because they don't show up in the listing.

Why are there 5 licenses available but not being issued?

routing token/LoadBalanceInfo RDS 2012R2

Hi,

We're currently testing 2012R RDS, but we're having trouble with the load balancing. We want to use Kemp Loadmasters to load balance the RDSH servers. Which should be able to replace this function from the Connection brokers. This works perfectly in our current 2008R2 setup.

But we're having some issues with the load balancing in 2012R2, our setup is as follows:

All clients are not on the local network, they all access the RDSH hosts through a RDGW, this part works.
We have 2 Connection brokers, a kemp in a single arm configuration with a farm VIP. the local DNS has a correct entry for this Kemp VIP. The loadmaster is configured for session broker mode on port 3389.

In order to check if the load balancing works as expected, I've used MS message analyzer with the option to decrypt the traffic. In the traces performed on the RDSH host, I'm only able to identity the X224 RDCB packet with: Routingtoken: tsv://MS Terminal Services Plugin.1.[CollectionName]

But I couldn't find any other routing information, or server redirect packet (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee443575.aspx)

Removing the line: loadbalanceinfo:s:tsv://MS Terminal Services Plugin. from the rdp file, resulted in a depreciated user rdp cookie:

Cookie: mstshash=user@dom

This also works, but is limited because the hash field is to short to identify every user, F.longsurname@domain.com gets shortened to f.longsur

There should be a server redirect package when using the LoadbalanceInfo option, but I cannot find it. Also, one in x attempts results in a failed login. This is the whole reason for me to want to find this routing information. Anybody any ideas on how to find this information, or how to find the cause?

Windows 2008 RDS License server in domain while application servers in a workgroup

Hello.  I have a client with a Windows 2008 R2 RDS License server in a domain, while the RDS application servers are in a workgroup.  The client claims that the Windows 2003 Terminal Servers can access the license server just fine, but the Windows 2008 servers cannot contact the license server.

An error is returned: "RD Licensing Manager could not connect to the license server.  Check the following: 1. The Remote Desktop Licensing service is started on the license server. 2. Your credentials have sufficient privileges on the license server."

It does not seem likely that this would work, since according to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2473823,the servers either need to both be in the same workgroup, or the same domain, or in two different domains with a two way trust.

Is there a way to get Windows 2008 R2 RDS servers in a workgroup to accept licenses from an RDS license server on a domain?  Why would this work for Windows 2003 servers in a workgroup?  Could there be another issue altogether, like, what ports need to be opened between the servers?

I appreciate any help you can provide on this topic.

Thank you,

John

Outlook not finding Sent items in Search

A user connects over remote desktop connection to a Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter.

She opens Outlook 2007, conducts a search of sent items for dss@example.com, and there is a gap in the search results.

The missing period is between May 2015 and January 2016.

I say a "gap", because if we browse the Sent items, we can see the emails not returned in the search.

The emails were sent to dss@example.com.

This problem only started occurring since the user returned to work on 11th January 2016.

Today, the version of Outlook installed on the server has been upgraded to 2013, and the problem remains.

Suggestions appreciated.

RDS from Internet with MFA/RADIUS with exceptions from specific external IP-adresses

Hi all,

I'm trying to set up an RDS environment where users who are connecting from the internet are provided with Multi-factor authentication, but with the possibility to bypass MFA when connecting from specific IP-addresses.

The MFA-part is working, however, I can't seem to figure out how to bypass MFA for specific IP-addresses.Does any of you have experience with this?

Windows Server 2012 R2 - RDWeb - MSTSC to hosts farm

Hello :)

I have deployed a Standard W2012 R2 RDS collection, in a testing enviroment.

Right now the collection has 3 servers - 1 Broker / Gateway - 2 Sessions hosts.

My questions are as follow:

When publishing a Remote Desktop connection (mstsc.exe /v hosts.domain.dk), what should i insert in the "hosts.domain.dk" to make sure load balancing will work between to 2 session hosts?? I believe a DNS round robin should work, but is that the correct way to do this or????

When connecting directly to S1TS01.domain.dk from the published remote app, my keystrokes are not "forwarded" to the session host?

If i connect directly to the session host (RDP) or from the Tab "Connect to a remote PC" on the RDweb the keystrokes are forwarded ?

I hope you can help, because the RDS solution looks like a Citrix killer - and it works really good :)

Thanks in advance :)

Distributed User Profile Disks in Server 2012 R2

$

I have been exploring the implementation of User Profile Disks in Server 2012 R2 in a load-balanced Session Collection. This has generally been working out fine, however I have concerns in terms of scaling.

All User Profile .VHDX files are mounted from a raided SSD share sitting on a single server. While this does have very good read / write capabilities, I predict to get up to having 500 active sessions served through this share - this means the full user profiles for 500 users are being actively written to this single server.

I doubt it will hold up to this kind of traffic, however don't know the right way to scale this out. I can't find any sort of advice or solutions offered by Microsoft up to now.

RDS 2008R2 Mandatory Profiles Recycle.BIN

Hello,

i had few weeks ago started an topic, but it seems it was not clear formulated.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/be0b00f5-5782-470b-a928-a6d294da76b6/recycle-bin-on-redirected-folders-show-no-files-when-delete-some-files-but-they-are-in-there

So i have an RDS 2008R2 enviroment with mandatory profiles. User folders a simple redirected with GPO, not a special thing i think.

Like: AppData, Pictures and so on to \\domain.internal\dfs\users\%USERNAME%\[...Foldername...]

So when the RDS user deletes files in "My documents", they are moved to Recycle.BIN. But they are for the user not visible. the Folder icon also changes if the Recycle.Bin folder is empty or not.

When i take a look into the Recycle.Bin folder(s) as an Administrator with "dir /s W:\users\USERNAME\$RECYCLE.BIN" it shows items in the folder.

To make it clear: I DON'T want to clean up the folder or something else, i want access to the delete files in the dumpster.

Thanks in advance,

best regards,

Henry

HA failover didn't work

We have 2 2012 servers configured as RDS servers in high availability mode. We are serving up a single application as a RemoteApp.

This morning we had a networking issue and one of the servers was unreachable. (If it's relevant, the server didn't issue any NIC or connection errors. It continued running just fine. It just stopped pinging, in or out. We fixed it by plugging into a different switch.)

During the outage, users with open connections on the working server were fine, but users on the unreachable server couldn't do anything. Is there something we should have done to allow those users to connect to the working server, or is this evidence that my configuration is wrong somewhere?

Access Denied - Server 2008 R2

Some users are experiencing an error when attempting to log onto the terminal server. The error message simply says Access Denied when they try to remote in.

It seems to happen at random times. However I have checked event viewer and the following error is appearing Event ID 1061, Remote Desktop Session Host server was unable to retrieve users Licensing information from AD. Error 0x8007203a.

These errors seem to appear almost daily, and Licensing diagnosis under RD session host configuration seems to be stating that I have 0 licenses available for clients. This tends to change from showing licenses are available to then showing 0 licenses available.

Could this be the reason for the access denied for some users? If so, does anyone know a resolution?

Thanks,

Update:

I have just checked Licensing Diagnosis and it now states the following:

Removing the need for https and certs.

Hi Everyone.

We run an internal facing Remote Desktop Services server. It is only accessible if you are inside our network or have VPN'd in. The person who configured this server has long since left and for all purposes, it works fine. That is until the turn of the year when we started to get errors that the cert is not trusted and refuses to allow connections stating the server address and the certificate subject do not match.

I cant see any need for SSL but appreciate that it is best practice. However, for this purpose I cant see any reason against removing the need for SSL, am I missing something?

If not can you help in removing the need for it or if I do, help in getting this issue resolved?

Thanks for the help!!!

.NET / JIT dropping out of Cache regularly - is there a fix??

$

We're running RDS with 50 - 60 users per server and are active users of SAP Crystal Reports.   We recently performed an upgrade of our ERP system and as it would happen, they switched from 100% native code Crystal Reports 11 to a new product called SAP Viewer built on .NET.

We're experiencing severe JIT compilation times 8+ seconds before we have to do a printout - as RDS doesn't seem to keep JIT compiled natives in cache for as long as a desktop would.  Is anyone aware of a regedit or ngen type solution that wouldn't require us to recompile the vendors source (we don't have access to it - like SAP would give it out anyway).

C# Open remote application locked within Windows form

$

We're developing a C# Windows application, and one of the things we want to do with it is open a remote application inside our program. We can open a connection to the application's server using MSTSCLib, but to open our remote application either we open a remote desktop connection and open the program (which we don't want to do) or we open the remote application but in a separate window (which also isn't ideal).

This is how we get the remote application to open in a new window; is there a way to open the remote application inside the RDP client?

private AxMSTSCLib.AxMsRdpClient9NotSafeForScripting rdp;

rdp.RemoteProgram2.RemoteProgramMode = true; rdp.OnConnected += (_1, _2) => { rdp.RemoteProgram2.ServerStartProgram(@"C:\Windows\System32\calc.exe", "", "%SYSTEMROOT%", true, "", false); }; rdp.Server = "servername.com"; rdp.UserName = "domain\\user"; rdp.AdvancedSettings7.PublicMode = false; rdp.AdvancedSettings7.ClearTextPassword = "password";

rdp.Connect();

Where is the "RemoteApps Properties" dialog?

I'm having trouble getting my RemoteApp sessions to log off after a user closes the app - the sessions instead stay forever in a disconnected state, which leads to various problems.

I tried setting the timeout in group policy, but it's not being enforced for some reason.

I found a potential solution in the SpiceWorks forums, which points to a configuration screen that I can't find anywhere on my remoteapp server.

I can't post on that site yet, as I'm a newb there, so I thought I'd ask here. How in the world do I get to this screen? I've looked everywhere I can think of in the server manager.

I have a 2012 R2 server set up for RemoteApps. It's on the domain, and it serves up the remote apps just fine. But I can't get it to log off disconnected sessions so they will release the UPDs (which they are not doing now).

Manage RDS Farm without admin rights

Hi all,

I've wrote a powershell script for my devs. With this script, they can logout all users using their application and after execute the patching of the applications.

The problem is that my devs don't have admin rights. They are simple user.

In my script, I use the Get-RDUserSession, Send-RDUserMessage, Invoke-RDUserLogoff, but without admin rights .... it's bullshit.

How can i delegate the right to use this cmdlet to use the script ?

I've found this topic with the same problem but no solution : https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/ada13337-0917-4423-9373-08f85abddb23/nonadmin-users-are-unable-to-manage-rds-2012-r2-sessions?forum=winserverTS

My farm is in 2012r2, 10 RDSH, 2 HA Broker, all roles are splitted on differents virtual server.

Thank you !

RDS device CAL expirations

$

OK, so here's the situation...we have a RDS server setup with a limited number of device CAL's available to it. Sometimes the users get licensing errors, due to the number of users being greater than the number of CAL's, so we're being asked to decrease the CAL lease time.

However, with Server 2008, the CAL lease time wasn't able to be changed from the set 90 days (but actually a random interval from 52-89). Now, I'm ASSUMING Server 2012 RDS CAL's are similar, but I spent 20 minutes at least trying to find something explaining it for Server 2012, but all I was able to find were pages explaining it for Server 2008.

Can someone please clarify for me if the Server 2012 RDS device CAL's are still set to 90 days (with a random 52-89 day actual expiration timer), and if they still can't be modified? Thanks in advance. And if there's a page somewhere spelling it out that I was just too stupid to find, please let me know.
