[Win Server 2012] How to connect RemoteDesktop DeviceCAL z UserCAL licences?

$

Hello

We ordered 3 licences "WinRmtDsktpSrvcsCAL 2012 SNGL OLP NL DvcCAL".
After a while I read about complications with that kind of licences. UserCAL licences are better for us. We can order next licences, this time "WinRmtDsktpSrvcsCAL 2012 SNGL OLP NL UsrCAL".

We have only one Windows Server 2012 with Remote desktop services.
I have some questions about using 2 types of licenes at once.
Can one terminal server use both types CAL: DeviceCAL and UserCAL at once?
Or do I have to use second Windows Server to use UserCAL?

Best Regards
Tom

Publishing RDS Server 2012 with App Proxy (Azure)

I have a situation where I'm trying to publish an RDS Server (2012 R2) that sits on premise with Azure App Proxy. All RDS roles are installed on this one box and I've configured the Azure App Proxy app to use the following:

Preauthentication Method: Azure Active Directory

Internal Authentication Method:  Integrated Windows Authentication

Internal Application SPN:  HOST/servername.domain.name.com

*with "servicename.domain.name.com" = the internal FQDN of the server.

Delegated Login Identity = User Principal Name

We have ADFS and Proxy in place for authentication and have published other on premise apps with this method.  The issue I'm seeing is that I'm able to authenticate to the /RDWEB virtual directory and see my RemoteApps, however, when I launch one it tells me the RDGateway is unavailable.  Do I need to configure a Relying Party Trust in ADFS?

VDI - Using Windows 10 Enterprise SSO

HI there,

Can someone please point me to an article that clearly articulates how to setup SSO using the following assets:

- HP t620 thin clients

- Using 2012 VDI infrastructure

-Using Windows 10 Enterprise as Virtual Machines

VDI - Using Windows 10 Enterprise cannot shadow VDI sessions

When trying to shadow a virtual machine, we get the following error:

"This Computer Name is invalid"

I have seen a number of fixes for this, including enabling the file and print share services, etc

Theses fixes don't seem to work, is there anything else that could be preventing this from working?

(How) Can I change the location of the local profile storage (C:\Users) in a roaming profile RDS environment?

$

Setup:

1 File Server and 2 Terminal Servers (RDS Hosts), 1 Domain

Roaming Profiles are set to \WS2008R2\PROFILES\

Local Profile storage as per default is in C:\Users

Relevant Software:

Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 Standard (64-bit)

Microsoft Outlook 2007 (no Exchange Server)

Problem:

My predecessor didn't calculate enough space for the C:\ drives of both Terminal Servers (RDS hosts). Now with growing user data over the years (in particular their Outlook PST-files) the remaining space is ebbing away due to the saved local copies of the Roaming User Profile in C:\Users.

My First idea was to use folder redirection to redirect the user's "Documents" folders (which contain the Outlook file) to their RDS Home Folders on the network. However, I've been told it is discouraged and not supported by Microsoft to access Outlook PST-files on network shares because it can lead to performance issues (apparently it's been improved with Office 2010 but they use Office 2007).

The easiest solution would be to change the local folder for user profiles (C:\Users), that syncs back to the Roaming User Profile on the file server, to D:\Users, as there is enough free space on that drive. However I haven't found any information on whether and how it is possible or supported.

When I log on as one of the users and check the properties of e.g. "Documents" I can change the path to D:\Users\Documents there but surely the solution can't be to log in as each user and manually set the path for each one (user permission and ACL concerns aside).

Any advice is appreciated

RDS 2012 R2 print spooler issues

Hello everybody!

i have a problema with print spooler in 2012 R2 environment.

RDS users (with disk profile) have connected printer with a 2012 print server. Sometimes printspooler seems to be blocked cause applications like Acrobat Reader DC gives an error no pages selected to print. Same user but different application (Foxit for examples) doesn't see any connected printers.

Tried many application settings but nothing resolved. After i have restarted print spooler, everything is back to work.

No events in application or system events. only in printservice/operational i got some error events:

event 221

source printservice

task enumerating printers

detail: Retrieving CSR cache information for printer \\xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\M5035 failed, error code 0x2. See the event user data for context information.

event 812

source printservice

task Executing a file operation

detail: The print spooler failed to delete the file C:\Windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS\00009.SHD, error code 0x5. See the event user data for context information.

event 603

source printservice

task Client-side rendering

detail: The print spooler failed to reopen an existing printer connection because it could not read the configuration information from the registry key SIDxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\Printers\Connections. The print spooler could not open the registry key. This can occur if the registry key is corrupt or missing, or if the registry recently became unavailable.

How to protect RDS from hacking

$

Hi everybody,

I'm looking for a way to secure RDS (running on Server 2012) from being hacked.

Currently we have our users access through a port 4489 (using a port translation on the firewall). However I would like some sort of lockout mechanism, so that if there are over 50 password attempts on a particular account that it is locked out for a period of time.

I cannot find anything inherently in the software to do this? Is it insecure to run it with just a) the different port number and b) user passwords as protection?

regards,

Jonathan.

Server 2012 RDS - User Profile Disks - Errors during Logoff

$

I have set up a test Server 2012 RDS collection (Single Server for now) and implemented User Profile disks.

I have two problems.

First: My generic test user can connect and does successfully use the user profile disk as expected. However, atlogoff, the system event log contains these errors:

The error (NTFS 137) is: The default transaction resource manager on volume C:\Users\ts3.test encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

The warning (NTFS 50) that concerns me is:

It appears that the user profile disk is being "disabled" or "disconnected" before the profile data is completely written at logoff. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Second:

Update: A post from Mike Connor on the following page: -LINK- solved the problem described below.

My administrative user always logs on now with a temporary profile. At the beginning, the UPD was working and mounting. That stopped working. In attempting to troubleshoot, I logged the admin user off and deleted the UPD disk file from the share. I remember it working again after generating a new UPD disk file in the share. Soon, it quit working again. I deleted the UPD disk file again from the share and ever since, it has never regenerated a new UPD andalways logs on with a temporary profile.

Trouble showing 2 monitors with 4K resolution using Remote Desktop Services (Windows Terminal Server 2012) from Windows 10

Hi,

I have installed 2 monitors with 4K resolution on my Windows 10 PC. I have tried to get both screens to work bye using Remote Desktop Services on at Terminal Server (Windows 2012 Server). It Works verry well on the Windows 10 PC. I have check the button for Connect all screens.

It will only Connect 1 monitor with this high resolution.

If i reduce the resolution on one monitor (one with 2560x2048 and one with 3840x2160), then both monitors will work in the Terminal Server Connection. But this is not good to work with.

It seems that the Remote Desktop Connection can`t use 2 monitors with 4K resolutions (3840x2160)?

Anybody that has a solution for this?

RD Gateway Manager Crashing adding a RAP

I've set up a HA Connection Broker cluster, and in order to get the web gateway working again, I need to set up a new RAP policy that specifies the RD Broker RR Address, but every time I try, when I click 'Add' in 'User Groups' (And anywhere else in the MMC, it seems), the MMC crashes with the following output:

Problem signature:

As far as I can tell from searching, it seems to be .NET that's crashing, but I haven't found any solutions. All three servers (Web Gateway and both Connection Brokers) are fully patched.

has anyone else sen this and/or have any ideas how to either fix it or maybe some kind of workaround?

simultaneous connections Gateway RDS 2012 R2

I have a question regarding gateway connections. So I have one 2k12 R2 server with RD gateway, connection broker and web access on it. I plan set up a second server to load balance gateway/web and also HA for connection broker.

Currently on the gateway, connections are coming as HTTP only on the gateway. Externally, I do not have UDP open right now. We have around ~250 connections going simultaneously.

I was going to wait till add a second server to open up UDP. Opening up UDP(3391) will triple the connections shown in the gateway.

Should I go ahead and open UDP now? or wait till I add second server to be safe?

Thanks.

Windows 10 and Remote Web Workplace RDP

Hello.

I am having problems with having a Windows 10 PC access a workstation via RDP through Remote Web Workplace running on SBS 2008.  When the Windows 10 PC tries to access the workstation a dialog box appears:

  1. Title:  VBScript Remote Desktop Connection
  2. Message:  The wizard cannot configure Remote Desktop Connection settings.  Make sure that the client version of Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 6.0 or later is installed on this computer.

The Windows 10 PC can access the same workstation without problems when they are not "remote" from each other---just not through the Remote Web Workplace.

Any thoughts?

SPLWOW64.exe Freezing Application When Printing

Hello All,

The issue that I'm experiencing is that when I try print from a 32 bit application on a 64bit Citrix session, the application locks up and can only be unlocked when ending the process SPLWOW64.exe. The print job doesn't even reach the print queue. This doesn't happen every time I print. It is inconsistent.

I've been experiencing this issue on one of our two Citrix servers. It is running Server 2008 R2 64bit.

I have found an old Microsoft Hotfix that describes my issue exactly, but is unfortunately for Vista only.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Is it no longer possible to publish remoteapps using MSI?

The problem with this is that it's not possible to do file associations unless you use the Remote Desktop Web Connection.

I have an application running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services system.

The back end database for the application is SQL Server 2008 r2.

Can I install SQL on the Remote Desktop Services server?

And would I need to do this in Application Install Mode?

Thanks,

Jeff

How to deploy a classic RD Session with Server 2012 R2

$

I am needing to deploy a W2K12r2 Classic Remote Desktop.  I am having a hard time collecting documentation to setup.  Here is our setup

2 W2K12r2 Session Host Servers

1 w2k12r2 hosting RD Web Access, RD Gateway, RD Connection Broker

The plan is to host RD Licensing on our DC

20 Clients connect using a Wyse WTOS Thin Client (there is no browser only a mstc client)

I want users to connect to a classic remote desktop.  I want sessions to be evenly divided between servers.  Users should only use one address to connect to the servers

Is there a doc that will walk me through the complete setup process.  I find docs on how to run through the Remote Desktop Services deployment wizard but nothing that explains how to get all the pieces working.  I am hoping there is a setup doc that walks one through each step to deploy in a production environment.  Since all clients are internal can I deploy with a self-signed SSL cert?  If so is there a doc that instructs how to setup, issue wildcard cert, and deploy certs to all servers.

I currently have Remote Desktop services depolyed in a lab environment, assigned the different rolls, and created a collection.  I connected through a browser but need to be able to connect with a mstsc client.

Assistance is greatly appreciated

RemoteApp Azure AD Sync Window Not Popping Up

$

Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or this is not possible. I cannot seem to find any errors anywhere or the few logs I know about.

Have a local server that has azure ad sync installed
Have another local server that has RD RemoteApp intstalled

I have a bat file created like I have for other apps like this:
start "Azure Sync MiisClient" /d "\\servername\c$\Program Files\Microsoft Azure AD Sync\UIShell" miisclient.exe

So I go in and add the bat file to the remoteapp programs and a test user. When I log in and click on the app icon I see the dos box pop up for a brief second and then HDD goes a little crazy but I never get the app window. If I change the bat file to point to they .exe's they popup just fine.

Is it not possible to launch the miisclient.exe file in a remoteapp like this? Or is there something I can look at log or otherwise that will show exactly what is happening or stopping it if it's supposed to work?

Thx

Renew Expired RDP Deployment Self-Sign Certificate

$

Good day all,

I have a Single 2012 R2 server (ADDC/RDS) which I and a few people connect to from the internet via windows remote app. Since yesterday no one can connect to the server via remoteapp receiving the following error "there is a problem with this connections security certificate". I tried to connect via rdp and noticed that the self-signed certificate has expired, but I can still RDP into the server.

I tried the following

> Server Manager > RDS > Deployment Properties > Certificates > certificate has expired > created new certificate > assigned to each role > restart server > can no longer connect via rdp > had to log in via hyper-v > reapllied expired certificate > restart > was able to log in via RDP but not via remoteapp

Should I issue a new certificate via ISS (not sure how to do this) and than import the certificate via RDS (same cert to each deployment role) and import the cert into each client device.

I must be doing something wrong, just cant identify what it is.

Any assistance much appreciated

Since it is an expired licence, I exepect to see it back in the pool of the available licences, but it is not.

Is this a normal behaviour, and I cannot have back any issued device license, even if it is expired, or I'm somewhere wrong?
