Windows 2012 R2 printers showing twice (and unable to set default printer)

$

Hello,

I have a problem that will not just go away. I have two Windows 2012 R2 servers: one with RDS installed for 30 users with an appointment application and one "back-end" server were print queues and database are running.

So basically, users can connect to network printers by clicking on a link that points to the "back-end" server. In Windows 2008 R2, this is so simple but in Windows 2012 R2, I am experiencing tons of issues (with both V3 and V4 drivers). By the way, printer redirection in RDS (remote desktop) is disabled and forbidden by GPOs. I am listing the issues here to see if someone experienced them before:

1. After a disconnection between the printer and the RDP session (the servers are in a remote site as the printers are local and printing through a site-to-site VPN tunnel as they are all IP printers). Example: a power failure will set a particular printer at "offline", which is normal and eventually, it comes back online. But then, the problem starts: the printer "loses" it "default printer" status and none of the printers for a specific user are showing as default printer in his printer list. If I try to set again the desired printer to default, it is already "set as default" but the green "tick" is not showing on the printer icon and printing fails.

2.  When the above happens, I usually try to delete the printer from the user session and reconnect to it. But then, it is even worse: the specified printer is now showing "twice" in the list of "device and printers" for a specific user while working OK for another (when you right click the printer, you see two instances of it). This is interfering with our main application and a specific user session is non functional. A printer will also show in the "unspecified section"

3. Even a bigger problem: if I delete a particular printer from a specific RDS user session, the same printer disappears for all other users using that printer. So each time I try to fix a printer in one user session, I can expect a myriad of issues with the other users.

4. The only way I found to fix this issue (so far) is by rebooting both servers at the end of the day and after power recycling the printer exhibiting the issue. The only other thing I could try (never tried it yet) would be to delete the affected user profile and recreate it on the RDS server. But I do not know yet the consequences of that action (will everyone else lose the defective printer mapping as well???).

5. This issue doesn't seem to be driver or brand related as I had the issue with many printers of different brand. Both servers are virtual under Hyper-v (physical hosts are also Windows 2012 R2) and are running the latest integration version.

If anyone has experienced this issue, please let me know what you have to have done to resolve it. My next step is escalating this to Microsoft.

Thanks.

Benji.

I can not see the users connected to the server manager tab connections. The collection was created using Quick Setup (Single Server).

Already reinstalled RDS Role but this had no effect, I always get this error in the event viewer:

I keep getting Event ID 20499 "Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server \\SERVERNAME for user USERNAME" in our event logs for multiple servers that are running 2012 R2

I noticed that when this happens the user often is missing items that get applied via group policies such as desktop wallpapers and mapped drives.

I am also using the Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac that was release yesterday on another Mac computer and for certain users it won't launch the redirected folder that I specified when I get this Event ID 20499

WMI RequiresEncryption flag on TS-Gateway

We are running TS-Gateway on Server2008 R2 with an Remote desktop session host farm of three Server 2008R2 servers.

On the gateway server i'm seeing eventid errors code 5605 WMI with the

The root\cimv2\TerminalServices namespace is marked with the RequiresEncryption flag. Access to this namespace might be denied if the script or application does not have the appropriate authentication level. Change the authentication level to Pkt_Privacy and run the script or application again.

Also we are using SCOM 2007 R2 on all servers for monitoring, but this event occurs only on this server, i've checked the following articlehttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc727103(WS.10).aspx but i cannot find what script or process is causing the error. Also there is very few information about this event, is there anyone with the same experience?

Virtual Channels not working in RDS VDI Pool, but do work in RDS Session Host.

Are virtual channels supported in the VDI pool deployments?  If not, is there a workaround?  I've written code and tested it successfully in a session host, but upon initialization with a VDI pool the plug-in disconnects right away versus remaining open waiting for a connection.  I don't know if dynamic virtual channels offer a solution.

Windows 2012 R2 RDS - Remote Gateway Manager is temporarily unavailable

Hi,

I have a question about my current setup:

1 - Gateway and Web access server (serverA)
1 - Connection Broker and License server (serverB)
1 - Session host server (serverC)

When I open a browser to access the web access url, there is a prompt for me to login. Once I login I see my published apps, however when i click on one of the published apps, another Remote App prompt pops up and asks for me to login to ServerB. I try to login but it says my "Remote Gateway Manager is temporarily unavailable".

I have opened up port 443 to my serverA and applied the SSL certificate I purchased externally to all the server machines.

What am I doing wrong? Why is it prompting me to login to ServerB?

Thanks,
John

mstsc /multimon and 2x 4k displays

Hi,

I'm trying to understand the limits of the screen resolutions of the mstsc /multimon option of the remote desktop client. I have 2 displays at 3840x2160, Win8.1Pro with a 2012R2 RDSH server. If i understand it, the supported resolutions are 4096 X 2048 per monitor with a maximum of 16 monitors, those were the specs for Win08R2 in 2009 at least.

But i have some results that are a bit puzzling to me;
- if i use 2x 3840x2160 with /multimon, i only get one RDS display
- if i set my main display to 2560x1440 and the second to 3840x2160, /multimon works as expected (showing 2 RDS displays)
- if i set my secondary display to 2560x1440 and the main to 3840x2160, i only get one RDS display.
- if i use /span, i get a session with 7680x2160 (not sure thats relevant, but mentioning it).
- if i use xfreerdp on ubuntu, i get the same results.

So why can't i use 2x 3840x2160 and why does it work when i set my main display to 2560x1440 (with the second being 3840x2160). Can anyone enlighten me?

File Type Association for new Users

$

Hi.

The issue is quite simple and I don't know why Microsoft gives nothing for this.

I have Remote Desktop Session Host and RemoteApp. My users start Application via RemoteApp. They need to open JPG or TIFF file in this Application. There is graphic view application on the server. But I can not set File Type Association for this files. GPO (Folder OPtions) - Result: Success, but doesn't work. CMD "ASSOC" and "FTYPE" Success but also have no effect.

So the question is "How to set file type association on RDP Server 2012?".

I suggest to use default profile. I mean, every time new user logs on server, new profile is created and system takes basic default association. Do you know, where it is?

Allow a Specific User to open RDP Session on Terminal Server from Only a Specific Computer

Hello,

Is it possible to don't let a specific user to open an RDP session on TSE from any copmputer he wants, but only from specific computers. The same way we can restrict an AD user from logon to specific computers ?

Exemple: I've got a bunch of users that could open a remote session on one of Terminal Servers from any computer they wants to, from inside or outside our network. That's great. But I would like that one of these users let's say John can be able to open his remote session on the same server only from one specific computer let's say PC01 and not from anywhere else.

Thank you

RDP differences between 2012R2 Standard and 2012R2 Foundation

Good Morning!

I would like to apply a software which needs OpenGL software support using rdp. I've already tested this software on Windows 2012R2 Standard over RDP and it worked properly.

So, I'd like to ask, is there any difference in connection with the remote dektop services between Windows 2012R2 Standard and Windows 2012R2 Foundation versions?

Thanks in advance!

WS2012R2 RDS - Problem with Certificates

Hello,

I have a problem with certificates in my environment and will be very grateful for help.

Users can see another logged in via smart card users certificates in their local box (CU-Personal). The funny thing is, that this is probably broker fault. I tried login without broker to the host servers and problem doesn't occurred.

Maybe someone have a good advice for this ?

I did a script in power-shell to clean local box of certificates when user login, but this is the worst possible way to resolve this problem in my opinion, so please help :)

My environment:

Windows Server 2012r2 - One machine as broker and two machines for hosts. User are login via Wyse Dell terminals and via smart card.

Thx in advance !!

User profile disk locked up after installing Skype For Business 2016

$

Hello,

As the title suggests, we encountered a problem with user profile disk not being dismounted after user logs off. The issue appeared immediately after installing Skype for Business 2016 on the RDS hosts.  After uninstalling Skype, the problem went away.

The event viewer contains the error message about

Remote Desktop Services could not disconnect a user disk for the user account with a SID of S-1-5-##-##########-########-#########-####. The error code is 0xAA.93

Additionaly we found this in the Application logs:

Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards. No user action is required.

and

1 user registry handles leaked from \Registry\User\S-1-5-##-##########-########-#########-####_Classes:
Process 756 (\Device\HarddiskVolume2\Windows\System32\svchost.exe) has opened key \REGISTRY\USER\S-1-5-##-###################-#########-####_CLASSES

My understanding  is that Skype is somehow locking up the user registry in the profile, preventing the RD Services from releasing the disk.

One idea we currently have is to have logoff script that kills the process that is locking the profile, haven't tested it yet though.

Has anyone experienced this kind of issue with Skype on RDS?

How to connect to 2012 R2 RDS Collection via Netbios Name?

$

Just set up a 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Farm:

RDCB = Connection Broker, Licensing, Web Access
RDSH1 = Session Host
RDSH2 = Session Host
RDSH3 = Session Host
RDSH4 = Session Host

Did not setup a Gateway Server because users will connect to it via LAN only.  The users will not use RDWeb.  All users will connect via Thin Client or RDP Client.

How do I setup the Collection so that anyone who uses mstsc.exe can connect to the Farm via Netbios name "RDS" instead of rds.domain.local?

Do I need a Gateway Server for this?

Remote Desktop App (Store) - not connecting to any RemoteApp

$

Hi all,

we have a RDS farm with two RDSH providing a dozen RemoteApps and a third RDSH providing the Remote Desktop.  Roles are

RD Connection Broker - on DC
RD Gateway - on DC
RD Licensing - on DC
RD Web Access - on DC
RDSH - RemoteApps on Server#1 and Server#2 (load balancing)
RDSH - RemoteDesktop on Server#3

Using RDWeb - I can open any RemoteApp
Adding the Webfeed.aspx to ControlPanel/RemoteApp & Desktop Connections - I can open any RemoteApp
I've downloaded the Remote Desktop app through Store and I can connect successfully to the broker, and retrieve all Apps from the collection (RdClient.Windows.exe version 10.1.874.0) - no RemoteApp will open, I can select one then it stays on "Connecting" forever.

Nothing happens.  Nothing gets logged in either my workstation (W10Pro) or the RD Gateway/Broker event log.
