missing features in RDS 2012

Hey guys,

I have been testing RDS 2012 for a couple weeks as my firm is looking to move away from rds 2008. I am having a few issue publishing apps as some of the file locations cannot be changed in rds 2012. For example, in RDS 2008 from RemoteApp Manager I am able to change the location and icon of an application by simply going into properties (capture 1):

I am unable to do this in RDS 2012 since the location cannot be edited (Capture 2):

Does anybody have a work around for this? It is important that we are able to run the batch file when the app is launched to change file path etc. I have tried adding the file path to Command-Line Parameters with no luck.

Thanks,

RDS Role Cfg. w/RD Session Host and RD Licensing Server but Diagnoser Shows Errors

Hi:

I've added the RDS role to a 2012 R2 server, which is a member server in an SBS 2011 Standard domain.  I specified the 2012 R2 server as the RD Session Host and RD Licensing server.  I set the mode to Per User.  I activated the license server then purchased and installed 3 Windows Server 2012 RDS CALs.

However, the RD Licensing Diagnoser shows errors that the number of lic. avail for clients is 0 with two warnings: 1. the license mode for the RD Session Host is not cfg.; 2. The svr. is in its' grace period but it has not been cfg. with a lic. server.  How to fix?  the warnings are inaccurate as I've already completed both cfg.

Thank you!

Slow RD connection via RDweb

Hi -

Have a public facing 2012r2 server running RDGW and RDweb roles.  There is no RDS deployment, we only use this for RDP pass-through to internal servers.

After login in via RDweb and going to 'Connect to a remote PC'  this connection may take anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes to secure and establish the connection to the remote server.

Once it gets through, if I disconnect and try again, it will connect almost instantaneously.  This occurs consistently.  If the client hasn't connected in a while, it will take a long time initially, every time.

Each time the connection process is slow there is an eventid 11 is generated in the RDGW server:

event 11 Source: RDWebaccess

RD Web Access was unable to contact "computer.domain", which is the server that is specified as running the RemoteApp and Desktop Connection Management service. Ensure that the name of the server that is specified as running the RemoteApp and Desktop Connection Management service is entered correctly, and that the server is running and available on the network. Error code: 2147944122.

This message does not appear on subsequent connections.

As mentioned I do not have any remoteapp or SH servers setup in this deployment.

thanks

RDS Connection Broker database bug

Hi I am having an issue with our RDS server the connection broker database RDCMS is filling up the logs and bringing the db down. It's a windows internal database even though it's in simple mode it wont truncate the logs. When I do a checkpoint I'm getting a failed to flush the commit table to disk in dbid 5 error.

I found that it's known issue and patched in SQL. However since it's a WID I'm not able to fix it this way. I searched for a windows update on this but have not found it.

I've had to restore the database a few times from our backed up VM and recently was able to manually increase the logs to buy time but needing a fix for this issue.

Is there a Windows update that I missed or what is the best way to resolve?

Hi all, hope you could help me with this matter.

My users uses a customs application in our 2012R2 RDS environment and need to use outlook 2013 in RDS as well. But each night the outlook 2013 profiles keep disappearing from the remote profile (VHDX virtual disk profile). so the next coming da when they sign in the profiles are gone and they need to load all emails once again.

All other application is working fine and all settings  is compact.

Any ideas?

RDS 2012 R2 Connection Broker High Mem

Hi All

I have an RDS 2012 R2 environment with 8 session hosts, 1 Connection broker and 1 web/gateway. I noticed that the connection broker memory usage was high so increased it to 12GB. It remains high sitting at around 90% which still seems very high. There are currently only 40 connections and the session hosts are publishing via "remote app) MS office and a few other bits and pieces.

Is this something i should worry about and what can i do to get the RAM down? Or should I allocate more?

Multiple login prompts from RDWeb

I have an issue with client PC's getting multiple login requests to get an RDP session via RD gateway.

This configuration only uses RDGW and RDweb roles.  there is no RDS deployment, we only use this gateway for remote desktop passthough.

I have a valid, trusted 3rd party certificate for the external DNS name.

Forms authentication is enabled on RDWEB site in IIS.

The RDgw server is a domain member and can authenticate logins to AD directly.

Client logs in to RDweb with domain credentials, tries to 'Connect to remote PC' then gets prompted for credentials for the RD GW server then again for the destination server to rdp (2008r2).

From here the behaviour is inconsistent depending what OS the client pc is.

On a windows 10 client, if I check 'remember password' from then on in it works seamlessly  (although I shouldn't be getting requested to authenticate again in the 1st place)

On Win7 client, after authenticating multiple times and checking remember password, the destination internal server kicks back a message saying the 'admin does not allow saved credentials'. If I supply the password again I can get in.

Note that connecting RDP to the SAME server from the same client when directly attached to the internal network either locally or via VPN I do not get this message about not allowing saved creds and it just connects RDP session so this only occurs when coming in via the RDgw.  (NB it also happens when just using mstsc.exe client)

How do I get SSO working with Rdweb, and why does this message about 'admin does not allow saved creds' only occur on Win7 clients, and then only when accessing via the RDGW

There are many posts about this same issue but I haven't seen any fixes applicable to my case

thanks

CLI from VBscript within RemoteApp

$

Hello,

I am trying to set up a virtual PDF Printer with Redmon + Ghostscript to use from within a RemoteApp session.

We are using Server 2012 R2 Datacenter.

The printer port is redirected to a VBscript, from which I start the Ghostscript command using the objWSHShell.Run command.

To this point this works totally fine, PDF gets created.

Right after that I start a second command to watermark the PDF file. I am using the cdpf tool which is a CLI tool and the syntax looks kind of like this:

C:\gs\cpdf\cpdf.exe -stamp-under  background.pdf inoutfile.pdf outputfile.pdf

If I use this printer from a Desktop session everythings works fine, if I use the printer from the RemoteApp the second command to create the watermark doesn't execute.

If I print from the RemoteApp session while there is a desktop session from the same user everything works aswell and during printing a command prompt window pops ups and closes afterwards.

I also tried different tools to do this, but none worked so far, so I was wondering if maybe that is a setting within the RDS service, that doesnt allow CLI commands being run from within a RemoteApp session. Or maybe its a problem with the used tool. The Ghostscript command is execute from the VBscript in the same way and that works fine.

Thanks in advance!

I have configured RemoteApps and setup a connection which can be accessed by clients using https://remoteapps/rdweb, but the problem is only two users are allow to connect at once.

I installed the licensing service and activated, I currently am configured for user cals.

It has if they are connecting using the remote admin clients.

This machine is Windows 2012RD and a member of a domain controller.

Windows 2012 R2 RDS RemoteApp "Protocol Error"

$

One of our customer's is receiving a strange "Protocol Error" when connecting to a RemoteApp via RD WebAccess.  They are able to log into WebAccess just fine and the vast majority of the time are able to launch RemoteApps successfully.  On occasion however they receive the error below (RemoteApp Disconnected - "Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected. Please try connecting to the remote computer again.")

If the user immediately re-launches the RemoteApp it works just fine.

I didn't find anything relevant in the event logs.

  • Their RDS environment is all Windows 2012 R2, with three session hosts, RD Gateway, RD Broker, and RD WebAccess.
  • Affected users already have the latest Remote Desktop clients on Windows 7.
  • Affected users are both local to the RDS servers and across private WAN links or site-to-site VPN's.

Here's a key piece of information - The problem started in April after RDS and the customer's RiverBed configurations were changed to match RiverBed's recommended best practices. Basically RDS traffic began being optimized by the RiverBeds so the compression& encryption settings on RDS was turned down/disabled to allow the RiverBeds to perform this function.

I don't believe that the RiverBeds themselves are the cause of the problem due to the fact that some of the users that experience the intermittent problem are local to the RDS servers, thus their traffic is not going through the RiverBed appliances. I suspect that the so called "Protocol Error" may be related to encryption or compression in RDS but I haven't been able to narrow it down. This conclusion is more due to the fact that the problem started after making the compression & encryption change and not really because of any specific evidence pointing in that direction.

I had suggested to the customer that we reverse the RDS compression & encryption settings (one at a time) as a test to try to narrow the problem. They are reluctant to do this however because making these changes in RDS and the RiverBeds in April made such a dramatic difference in their overall performance - they don't want to go backwards!

I am considering using WireShark to sniff some packets, but because the problem is so intermittent (it can be days between errors) and the fact that I don't know what "protocol" is causing the problem, it is likely to be difficult to come up with a decent enough filter to grab useful data. It would be like drinking out of a firehose!

Anyone else ever see this error? Anyone?

Roaming profile security permission issue.

We have a Windows 2012 RDS environment.  We redirect the user appdata and desktop to a centralized network share.

A new user login to one of a RDS server, his new profile is created in the network share.  When I inspect folder permission of his profile in the network share, I do not see he has access at all.  Only administrator group.

The local administrator group of that RDS server contains the domain admins group.  The local USERS group of the server contains the domain user group.

Under the security permission of the network share, I only grant the local USERS group to read only to "This Folder Only". This is because I do not want everybody to have access to everybody's profile.

Please advise if you know how to fix this or a better way to handle.

Thanks a lot.

After a while, I cannot mapping local resourcers (Drivers and Printers) anymore

Hi,

My problem is:

After a while, I cannot map my local resources (drivers and printers) anymore.
Only with a reboot I can map again my local resources.

It is important to say that I can always map my local driver by the net use command.
So, its not network problem or permission.

It seems that run out of something... and I can only release with a reboot

Any help is welcome!

RDS Certificate Mismatch error

Hello,

We have a 2012R2 RDS farm with 3 session hosts.

DNS farm name = farm.domain.local

Session hosts = ts1.domain.local, ts2.domain.local, ts3.domain.local

I have created a SAN cert and it is issued to farm.domain.local from our internal CA. We are not exposing this farm to external users.

All 3 session hosts servers fqdns are listed under the subject alternative name section of the cert.

When I RDP to farm.domain.local I receive a name mismatch error

Name requested = farm.domain.local

Name in certificate from remote computer = ts1.domain.local

If I click view certificate I can see the name of the session host server listed in the SAN details.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

This is an MMC snap-in found on earlier servers, even if RDS is not installed.  In Server 2012, even if the Remote Desktop Session Host role is installed, this tool is still not available.

I'm looking for the Server 2012 tool to adjust security settings like TLS authentication, High encryption level, choice of TLS certificate, NLA, etc.

Thanks!

We have an application server running on Windows 2012 R2. The default printer (Canon printer) keeps changing to other printer automatically. The print redirect in group policy is disabled. Is there a way we can keep the default printer permanently?

Hello,

I am having an issue setting up an RDS deployement on a Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter system. I have tried both deployment type "Quick Start" and "Standard. The session broker, session host, web access are on the same server.

The error message I am getting:

Could not create the Windows Management Instrumentation Windows Firewall exception on "Server FQDN".

I've tried the following:

  • Verify the Firewall Service is "started" and "on"
  • Manually created the firewall exception using the command: netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="windows management instrumentation (wmi)" new enable=yes
  • I've tried installing by PowerShell using command: New-RDSessionDeployment.However, I get the same error message.
  • I've removed the server from the domain and readded it back to the domain
  • I've also remove the roles for RDS and rebooted... Many times. :-)

Please help. I have exhausted all my options. :-)
