Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server Event ID 20499

I keep getting Event ID 20499 "Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server \\SERVERNAME for user USERNAME" in our event logs for multiple servers that are running 2012 R2

I noticed that when this happens the user often is missing items that get applied via group policies such as desktop wallpapers and mapped drives.

I am also using the Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac that was release yesterday on another Mac computer and for certain users it won't launch the redirected folder that I specified when I get this Event ID 20499

Disable Dynamic DPI Scaling

I have some older applications being distributed via RemoteApp that don't handle DPI scaling very well, while it isn't terrible, they appear somewhat fuzzy and it tends to drive the users crazy. I know that RDP 8.1 will scale the RemoteApps according to the users DPI settings on the connecting machine, however all the user machines are set to 100% (no scaling) and the resolutions actually aren't that high.

Is there a way to disable some of the new RDP 8.1 display optimizations via the server side so I can get the app to look normal? The app looks just fine when loaded directly on the user machine and is only fuzzy over RDP.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I can no longer connect through the handheld, after I activated RDS CALs. It worked fine when it was in "trial" mode, prior to activation.

I have tried reducing security levels and disabling NLA. I can login to Server 2016 RDS from a different desktop using the same user account.

Mix different OS for RDSH in RDS deployment?

$

Hi. Is it possible to mix different OS versions in a single RDS deployment? Say we want to install new RDS deployment based on WS2016 (RDCB, RDWA and at least one RDSH). Is it possible to add 2012R2 RDSH to this deployment (and session collection)? Ie. mixing WS2012R2 and WS2016 as RDSH servers.

Apologies if this is answered elsewhere, but I couldn't find this info.

Thank you in advance

Microsoft recommended design for publishing RemoteApp only to internet

Requirement : Remoteapp only to be published to internet with SSO-  using Server 2012 RS / 2016

Without RD gateway

1. Do we need a RDGateway still or can we manage with only RD Webaccess role . i.e. Reverseproxy (from DMZ) just RDS WebAccess (internal domain joined network)

If RD gateway is required

2. Forest trust model: One-way trust between the perimeter network AD DS and the internal network AD DS. RDG is joined to perimeter AD DS.

Does it work? researched to find  "RD Gateway is not supported in one-way forest trust AD DS model. This is because RD Gateway wont be able to check for user group membership in RAP. Hence one gets a RAP failure with domain user." your feedback pls

3. Extended corporate forest model: Can we leverage ADFS already in DMZ/perimeter,  instead of allowing ports from DMZ to internal AD or even placing RODC

Is it possible?any article which can be referred

Best recommended Design on RDSGateway/RDS Webaccess placement

4. Like Lync Edge server which is in DMZ and on workgroup .Has there been any improvement on server 2016 RDS Gateway which can  work on workgroup?

or for SSO do we still have a dependency RDS Gateway to be Internal AD DS joined

5. Currently Best RDS design from what I could gather seems to have all RDS farm internal AD DS joined and in internal network.Have DMZ Reverseproxy pass on the traffic to RD Gateway. Is there a better approach that I am missing

(most of the articles are'nt updated I still find is on majorly referring to server 2008 R2 ,very few on 2012,almost none on 2016.)

Your suggestion is greatly valued

Start Screen Layout on Server 2012 R2

I am trying to set a specific start screen layout for a remote users group. I have created a group policy assigned to the Organizational Unit 'remotes'.

I logged in as a remote user and edited the start screen to my liking. Then I used Powershell to export the XML of the start screen layout. I then logged back in as an administrator user.

I changed the Start Screen Layout under User Configuration (UC -> Policies -> Admin Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar -> Start Screen Layout). I entered the path of XML file I had exported.

I ran [gpupdate /force], then logged back in as the remote user but the start layout does not reflect the change.

This server does not have Remote Desktop Session Host Role Service installed. Is that necessary for this to work? I don't recall needing it for previous servers I have set up on 2012R2, but I can't figure out what else could be wrong here.

Here is a link to the group policy report (exceeds 60,000 characters so I cannot include as HTML here):

RDS Users Taking High CPU when opening Micro enable Excel File (.xlsm)

Dear Sir,

Within few days i am facing some issue with Micro enable Excel File (.xlsm), RDS Users taking higher CPU utilization but now getting RDS users unable to open Micro enable Excel File (.xlsm) or taking more than 15-20 Minutes to open a single file.

When i am opening the same file with Administrator Account on session host server, it's working properly but same files not opening through RDS users Account and getting below error:

Our IT Setup are as below:

Server 1-DC1: DC, DNS, DHCP, RDweb, RD Gateway, RD Licensing (Windows Server 2012 R2, Std)

Server2-DC2: ADC (Windows Server 2012 R2, Std)-On HyperV

Server3-FS1: Remote Desktop Session Host  (Windows Server 2012 R2, Std)

Server4-FS2: Remote Desktop Session Host (Windows Server 2012 R2, Std)

Server5-FS3: Remote Desktop Session Host (Windows Server 2012 R2, Std)

So, please suggest Is it RDS Issue.

RDP will not connect to Server thru an external gateway server after being connected to local domain

We are moving everything to the "Cloud". Currently we log into a local domain. When I try to login to the new server at our contracted host, I can connect to the RDP Gateway server but not login to the specified server behind it with ANY workstation that is on the local domain. I have tried removing the computer from the local domain and still I can't connect. I have removed all Group Policy's after removing it from the local domain and still cannot login to the specified server behind the RDP gateway. I sure I am logging into the RDP gateway but can't access the server behind it which is named the same as our business because I can login to the web version of the gateway but not the server that I am pointed to.

Now, if I use a Laptop that was never connected to the local domain, but on the same network, same router gateway going out, I can login to the specified server behind the RDP gateway. I can login from home on a computer that was never on the local domain. I installed Windows 7 with NO updates, not even SP1 and as long as I didn't connect it to the local domain (as in I didn't create an account for it on the local domain server), I was able to login.

My host tells me that it is my problem.

What do I need to do to the computers that are joined to the local domain to get them to connect to the remote server through their RDP gateway?

Session does not hold after disconnect

Hi,

I have been facing a critical issue on my Windows Server 2012 R2 - i use it to connect to through RDP, where in i have a UI automation program, Power Update, that triggers hourly updates for my PowerBI desktop file, saved on the server. However, over the past couple of days (despite having made no changes, barring an update of the .NET framework), the UI automation job fails when i am disconnected from the session, however, while connected, it runs like a breeze. This issue has started out of no where from the past couple of days, and i have been running this program for the past 3 months with no server issues. I have edited the group policies as well, as the session does not have time limits to disconnect, yet i am consistently facing this.

Any help ?

Clearing cached RDP credentials?

$

We're using the release candidate RDP 6.1 client for Windows XP to connect to our RTM Windows Server 2008 TS environment. Clients login to TS Web Access to run Remote Applications through our TS Gateway Servers to the Win2k8 Application Server farm.

The large majority of our 1000+ workstations are shared workstations where one user logs in locally using a common account and then several people may use that workstation at different times of the day. The workstations are not members of our Active Directory.

Despite our instructions, we're running into cases where people have checked the box to save their username/password for the Remote Application connection. Once they realize that anyone else using that workstation can now access their Outlook e-mail, they want to disable the cached username/password info.

I've tried deleting keys from HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Services Client\Servers, but it doesn't help.

Also tried looking for a cache in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\ Nothing there seems to help either.

Anyone know how to programitically clear out these saved credentials once they're buried in the computer?

Server 2012 RDS WinLogon process crashing Event ID 4005 Black Screen

$

We have this issue on many 2012 RDS session hosts. The issue has been seen at different clients with different set ups, some have a simple 1 session host RDS server, some have 4 or 5 session hosts in a load balanced farm with RD gateway, connection brokers, RDWeb, ect. The problem in simplest explanation:

A user will call the help desk saying they cannot access the server. They will get an error when RDP is trying to connect.

We check the session hosts, and will find many errors:

"Event ID 4005 - The Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated"

At that point in time, users who are currently logged in may be able to still work, or their session may lock up (it is not consistent).

Regardless of the current users logged; after the logon process crashes, it continues to crash upon every user attempt to log on. It will happen indefinitely until the server is rebooted. We can not log in, not even via console until the server is rebooted.

Then, everything works fine for some amount of time (not consistent) it may be a couple of days, or it may be weeks, or a month even.

We have had the case open with Microsoft for about two months and they cannot determine what is wrong.

I believe I may have found a possible cause; Webroot Secure Anywhere antivirus. Since we have tried everything from moving from roaming profiles to local profiles, removing all printers, blocking inheritance of GP, fresh server builds with minimal software, ect - it has to be something that is consistent across the board on all servers.

The only thing I can find consistent across the board is the Antivirus; Webroot.

I am curious if anyone else is having this issue? I would like to pin point this to something but it is so intermittent and we cannot force replicate the problem.

Keep RDP session alive Windows server 2012 R2

$

Hello,

We have several Windows Server 2012 R2 VMs hosting a software to convert MS Office files into PDF.

MS Office 2016 is installed on these servers. This application is not intended to be used by interactive users, and no one is supposed to log into the servers, except for maintenance purposes.

The main issue we are facing is in the interaction between the software and Office 2016.

The behavior changes depending on the DCOM configuration of Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.):

- If the Identity is set to "This user" or "The launching user", the software interacts with Office all the time, but the conversion is not satisfying, because all embedded objects are missing. When we start Excel for application, we see the message "Cannot use object linking and embedding". And this explains why some objects are not being converted.

- If the Identity is set to "The interactive user", and an interactive user is logged into the machine, the conversion works properly. But as soon as the user closes the RDP session, we start seeing the following error:

[Err.Number]=-2147467238, [Err.Description]=Automation error
The server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect. Check the username and password.

Our analysis is that the application is using the interactive user session when that user is logged in to interact with MS Office, but then when the user disconnects, the interaction with Office is not happening.

Is there a clean solution to resolve this issue? Is there a way to keep the session of an interactive user alive, even after closing the RDP window (without logging off)?

This issue did not exist on Windows Server 2008 R2 with MS Office 2010, and it is very penalizing to us.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Thanks!

RDS SSL SAN Certificate

Hi All,

Hopefully you can help with my task on setting up RDS at 3 different sites.

I have 3 public subdomains

RDS1.MYCOMPANY.COM

RDS2.MYCOMPANY.COM

RDS3.MYCOMPANY.COM

Which point to 3 servers which has the same FQDN as the the subdomains above. I have a SSL SAN cert that covers all 3 subdomains the main common name is RDS1.MYCOMPANY.COM and the alternative names RDS2.MYCOMPANY.COM, RDS3.MYCOMPANY.COM.

Setting up RDS on RDS1.MYCOMPANY.COM is fine due to the SAN cert having this domain name as the main common name.

When importing the SAN cert on the other two servers the main common name shows RDS1.MYCOMPANY.COM in the gateway SSL properties which obviously gives me SSL mismatch errors when connecting.

My question is how do I change the main common name so that when importing on the other servers it actually shows the servers FQDN.

Hope the above makes sense and any help is much appreciated

Chris

Messed up with moving User Profile Disk, need some help

Hello,

Today i decided to move the UPD share to E:/ instead of C:/ where it initially was. I removed the service, copied over all the VHDX files to the new share on E:/, set up the permissions exactly like they were on the c:/ share and enabled the UPD service again.

Should have done some reading on this since it did not work out like i thought it would. After moving it, users logging on to their remote desktop only had read access, so nothing could be written or modified in their profiles. I also tried to enable to share on C:/ again and start the service, but then users could not even read from their VHDX file, it instead created a temporary profile.

So, from reading afterwards(should have done that before i did the move), copying stuff does not retain the permissions for files and folders. What can i do now? It seems the VHDX files on the initial share on c:/ has lost their permissions for each user. Can i somehow get those permissions back? If not, can i create a new empty share, log in each user to create a new VHDX file, mount the old VHDX files and copy stuff over from it to the new files? Or, is there a better solution for this?

installing SAN certificate in RDS 2016

$

I am trying to install a san certificate into my server 2016 RDS collection.  The collection consists 2 RDSH server and has 1 additional server that acts as RDWA, RDCB and RDGW.

RDSH1
RDSH2
Server3 <RDWA, RDbroker, RD GW>

My end game as of now is just to use the collection internally and my hope is to get rid of certificate warnings that pop up to users that remote into the collection via the DNS round robin name of the collection.  I do have a stand-alone enterprise CA but I am trying to install the RDS certificates via the RDS collection management console that is enabled under the tasks section of the collection in server manager.  That manager will let me select an existing certificate in .pfx format only.  I have been able to create a SAN cert by using the request a certificate wizard following the direction here:

https://ryanmangansitblog.com/2013/03/11/creating-a-san-certificate-for-rds-2012/

Once created I am using the Certreq.exe utility to create a certificate in my CA using this command:

certreq -submit -config "<ServerName\CAName>" "<CertificateRequest.req>" "<CertificateResponse.cer>" and press ENTER.

Which errors out because I dont have template made.  So I found this command to use instead:

certreq -submit -attrib “CertificateTemplate:WebServer” <request.req>

This allows me to create the WebServer certificate but in a .cer format only.  Since this is not a .pfx file, I cannot import it via the collection certificate manager.  How do I create a SAN cert in pfx format via my CA?
