Terminal Services Oddball Issue

$

Hi everyone......first post so bear with me!

I have a weird issue on our network to deal with.

We have multiple mapped network drives for documents, files etc. We also use terminal services sessions for certain work.

Whilst in terminal services and accessing our "N:" drive. If you right-click on a file and click properties, nothing happens. However doing the same operation on any other network drive works successfully and performing the operation outside of terminal services also works.

Also, just for extra spice, if you visit the mapped location in terminal services via a full path rather than the mapped drive it also works.

So it is literally just inside terminal services whilst using the mapped drive option it doesnt work.

The OS is server 2003 and the workstations are running XP.

Does anyone have a clue because every brain cell in my head is telling me there is no way it shouldn't work.

Thanks in advance!

The Terminal Server security layer detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client.

Has anyone come across this and know what this means? from what I can gather from users at remote sites (hardware VPN) they freeze and then it attempts to reconnect - after a minute it reconnects back to the session. Could this be a license cal issue?

Thanks

Migrating to a 2012 License server

We are migrating our Domain to Server 2012 from 2003. Currently we have a 2003 TS Licensing server and I need to move  the licenses to our 2012 server. I have all the info I need to move the licenses such as agreement numbers, etc. Here is my question. I know I can call the clearing house to do the deactivation of the old server and the reactivation of the new server but I did stumble acrosshttps://activate.microsoft.com to move licenses as well. Has anybody out there used this and if so, did you have have any difficulty while using this site? Also, although it seems straight forward on the site does anyone have a beeter set of instructions other than the 1 paragraph on the landing page?

Thanks

VDI Deployment with RemoteFX using RDWeb and RDGateway - Server 2012

$

Hi everyone - I'm having a bit of an issue with RemoteFX in a VDI deployment utilizing the RDWeb and RDGateway roles.

I have a VDI deployment in a Windows Server 2012 environment where my Connection Broker and Virtualization Host are on the internal network and my RDWeb and RDGateway server (combined roles) sits in the DMZ (between two Cisco firewalls). Firewall rules are properly opened (although I think I don't have the UDP port open that RDGateway uses)

I'm using a Cisco UCS box with 256GB of RAM, plenty of storage and an nVidia GRID K2 card for RemoteFX. The drivers are installed on RDVH. RemoteFX is enabled and working on all the virtual machines (the adapter is added and being used) and it seems to run fine if I launch an RDP session from my local client to a VM in the VDI collection/pool. As a note I am running Win7 Ent SP1 w/RDP 8.0 client with local group policies modified to allow RDP 8.0. Local group policies were also modified on the RDVH, RDCB, and RDWeb/Gateway server for RemoteFX and RDP 8.0.

In addition, I also know that the RemoteFX adapter is working because when I launch an RDP session from my local client to a VM in the VDI pool I see the RemoteFX adapter in Device Manager. I also ran dxdiag and I can see that is properly using "Microsoft RemoteFX Graphics Device - WDDM" with driver version WDDM 1.0. My settings on my RDP client (mstsc.exe) is set to use LAN 10mbps or higher. Oh, and Aero Glass works via RDP.

Alright, here's where the strange issue appears:

I deployed the RDWeb server (as per the requirement of the VDI deployment option in Server 2012) and continued to install the RDGateway role on the same server that sits in the DMZ. I force my clients to connect via SSL using the RDGateway with firewall rules opened and the SSL cert working properly. Connections to my VDI pool work just fine and I can connect to the SAME VM that I previously mentioned above. My VMs in the VDI pool are assigned and managed. And as far as I know I am connecting via port 443. Of course, the RDCB manages all the connections so it appears that I'm "technically" connecting to the RDCB and not my previous VM, even though I know I am connected to my assigned VM via the Hostname command.

Anyway, When I connect to the VM via the icon that get's published in the VDI deployment, I can see that in the logs that I'm connecting at 10mbps.

When I check device manager I see the "Microsoft RemoteFX Graphics Device - WDDM" is available but when I check dxdiag it does NOT appear that I am using WDDM. Instead it shows that I'm using "RDPUDD Chained DD" with an "Unknown" driver model.

To further troubleshoot this I checked in the RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS application log on the VDI VM and noticed this warning that leads me to believe that RemoteFX is not working via RDGateway/RDWeb. There were no events whatsoever in any of the other RemoteDesktopServices logs.

Anyone have any ideas what the issue could be? Is RemoteFX not supported via RDGateway? Which would kind of be silly.

Initial (1st Person) to login to Terminal Server is slow - all others ok

We have three (3) T.S.'s; all are Win2K8 Std.

On two (2) of them; one that's been in production for a while and one that we just built; have this issue of when the 1st person of the day logs in; everything is slow; scripts, opening programs, browsing files, etc...When they log out and back in; everything is running fine and dandy.  This includes those who logged in 2nd, 3rd, etc... they are all fine.  It's just the very 1st person that logs in on these two boxes.

On the 3rd T.S.; it doesn't have this issue.

They are all getting the same GP's; same Domain/Subnet; pretty much configured the same with the same apps.

Any ideas for where we might start looking?

Much Thanks

Remote Desktop Services for MAC

Hi,

When we use Remote Desktop Services for MAC (v2.1.1)  to connect to a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 machine, the redirected printers all seem to use an HP Color Laserjet Postscript printer driver.  Even if we install the correct driver on the server, it still selects a PS driver.  This only happens when we connect using RDS for MAC.  When I connect with a Windows based machine the correct printer drivers are selected.

Does anyone have any ideas on why this might be happening.  The printer we have connected to the MAC is NOT a Postscript printer, and consequently jobs don't print correctly.

I contacted Microsoft directly on this, and support stated that even the Remote Desktop Service for Mac is their product, I have to involve Apple.  Apple said they couldn't help me and would even consider entertaining a conference call because someone at Microsoft might record the conversation.  So in the meantime, I am still back at square one.

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

Windows 2012 Workgroup Server Remote desktop Session host Performance issues (Pauses While Typing)

$

I have a Windows 2012 Standard server (Dell T620) running as a workgroup server for 8 people with some file shares and Remote desktop installed. Server specs are a single 6 Core Processor, 1.5TB of HD space RAID 10, 32GB of RAM. Users have access to Office 2013 and old access based utility billing software (Caselle) Qbooks 2013 for a single user, Adobe Reader and Acrobat, Chrome. Installed Desktop experience on the system and use Classic Shell so that users will not have to commit seppuku by trying to use metro on a non touch environment.

Users are reporting that throughout the day while they work on the system there are pauses in performance. They may last a few seconds, 30 seconds or a couple of minutes. For example the user could be typing a document in Word, or Outlook and there would be a pause and then the characters would come up at once.

Troubleshooting steps:

Looked at the logs for the times the users reported issues and I cannot see a smoking gun.

Server has the latest possible drivers and updates.

Performance meters: Did not notice any issues with network bandwidth or memory usage issues or CPU usage.

Made sure caching on controller was enabled to eliminate any possibility of performance issues when a user logs on or off the terminal session. That issue affected Windows 2008, but did not know if it applied to Windows 2012.

Tried disabling numerous Microsoft office maintenance Tasks that would occur during normal operating hours.

Disabled search indexing.

Checked Antivirus settings. We Use ESET File security that automatically creates exclusions for server operating systems and added our own exclusions as well. Disabled any advanced heuristics on ESET.

Verified that the licensing heartbeat task for Office executes correctly every morning at 12:00am. What I am seeing in the logs quite a bit is Security-SPP source events (on the Application Log) every time a user runs an office app. The office had been activated and working fine. In the licensing option for Remote desktop I see only 1 license assigned and 7 available.

The only other log of concern is the Event 17890 Source MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID We do not have SQL server installed on this machine so I assume it is the windows internal database. The error is a significant part of SQL server process memory has been paged out. This may result in a performance degradation. Duration 7243 seconds. Working set: KB 90044, Committed KB: 359960. Memory Utilization 25%%. the figures may vary a bit. Some events are spread out over an hour others one after the other.

Updated the drivers on all the machines (some Windows XP SP3 running the latest terminal services client) and some Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit SP1.

Made sure that user log off their sessions at the end of the day.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Failed to create KVP sessions string. Error Code 0x8007007A

I have two RDS servers running Server 2012, and since a couple of days users are reporting they get disconnected often. In the eventlogs, I found a couple of events where a user was disconnected without further information. I also found a lot of "Failed to create KVP sessions string" events. I couldn't find any relevant information about this event, but it appears the most at moments when users are being disconnected from the RDS server.

This is the event:

Client cannot connect to VM when RemoteFX enabled.

Hi there,

I'm now testing RemoteFX on Server 2012. Right now, I've encountered the following problem. I would like to see if anyone can help me to fix it.

My Server 2012 is running on a HP Z620 workstation with Intel Xeon E5-2620 CPU and Nvidia Quadro 2000 GPU. I used Windows 8 drivers on that machine so that the device manager does show any unknown hardware.

Then, I install HyperV and RDS on the server. HyperV can use Quadro 2000 as GPU for RemoteFX. Then I created two Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 32-bit VMs and fully patched them. The two VMs have RDP enabled and I've configured their firewall to allow both RDP and RDP with RemoteFX connection. The two VMs can be access via other Windows 7 RDP clients. Also, I've applied KB2749168 to the VMs so that Server 2012 HyperV manager can connect to them.

Now, I add the "RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter" to one VM and rebooted. HyperV VM manager can connect to that VM. But other Windows 7 RDP client cannot connect to it. It seems that the login is successful and shortly after some handshaking, the RDP client quits.

I then used HyperV manager to connect to the VM with RemoteFX. In the Eventlog, I notice the following:

---

Application and Services Log\Microsoft\Windows\RemoteDesktopService-RdpCoreTS\Admin

Warning EventID : 5

The client computer does not support RemoteFX. The connection will be made with the RDP Graphics. The relevant status code was 0x101

---

---

Application and Services Log\Microsoft\Windows\RemoteDesktopService-RdpCoreTS\Operational

Error EventID : 161

The RemoteFX encoding engine encountered an error (0x80004005)

Grateful if there is any hints for me.

Best Regards

Steve

May have same problem on Vista as well, but using our primary work applications via RemoteApp causes the program's window to hide the taskbar.  I have users resize the program window to keep the taskbar visible.

Any tricks I might be missing?

Allowing an Application to notify all logged in users

We have an application that is a Safety Alert Application.

When the application is installed on our 2008 R2 RDS server, the alerts appear for the Administrator logged into the console, but not for any users.

I have tried converting the app to a service, but this didn't fix the issue.

Are there ways we can make this function.  It worked on server 2003 terminal services.

KB2821895 : RDS install impossible?

Hello everyone,

I need to install RDS service on Windows 2012 server but i can't install it because  apparently a reboot is needed.. but no update are available..

Can't use normal or quick install..

I built another Windows Server 2012 RDS and no problem...

On the server who has the problem a KB2821895 is installed.

After a long research on internet, it seems to be a KB problem, do you agree with that?

What can i do to solve this problem?

A microsoft employee can confirm KB2821895 fails with RDS 2012??

Thanks.

WTS addin not loading on 32 bit, but works in 64 bit

I have written a terminal services plugin with virtual channels. The server and client code work fine on 64 bit Windows 7. The server side code runs on 32 bit Windows 7 too.

However I can't get a TS plugin to work on 32 bit windows. I launch MSTSC and the plugin does not get activated. The DLL is compiled for 32 bit, no missing dependencies.

I tried the most basic code for testing :

#define WIN32_LEAN_AND_MEAN
#include <windows.h>
#include <TsVirtualChannels.h>
#include <Cchannel.h>

#include "ts.h"

BOOL VCAPITYPE VirtualChannelEntry(PCHANNEL_ENTRY_POINTS pEntryPoints)
{
    OutputDebugStringA("VirtualChannelEntry called...\n");

    return TRUE;
}

I register this with :

reg ADD "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default\Addins\TEST" /v Name /d %CD%\ts.dll /F

I double checked the registry, it has the right path, but the DLL does not load.

i ran the Procmon tool and monitored mstsc.exe - it reads the DLL file, and does a "Loadimage" operation, but the VirtualChannelEntry function is never called.

What is wrong??

Thanks in advance

Vivek

Hi,

We have been using USB re-direction via RDP 8 on windows 7 sp1 successfully for a while now but recently we used a new client machine with USB 3 ports and these fail to work.

If we use a USB 2 port on the same machine it works fine....anyone got any ideas as to why this is?

Cheers for now

USB redirection over RDP 8

Trying to connect a Samsung Focus Windows Phone to a Win8 PRO VM using USB redirection to support Windows Phone application testing.

I have  updated my Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 machine (Domain joined) to use RDP 8.0, and have made the appropriate GPO changes. I have a Windows phone 7.1 device (Samsung Focus) attached to this machine using USB. I'm using the RDP client to connect to a Windows 8 Pro VM (not Domain joined) running on Windows Server 2012. From the RDP client I see my Samsung Focus and have checked it for USB redirection. The connection to the Win8 VM works, and I'm not able to see the Samsung from Win8 VM. Launching Zune software also does not see the Samsung phone. Is this supported? and what else can I check?

Thanks,

Joe

Hi,

I setup Server 2012 with RDS virtual machine based. I created a VM image and let RDS duplicate the image 10 times. I assigned the VM's to specific users. When the users login, they go to the server instead of there VM. Any idea what I might have wrong?
