Roaming Profiles 1509 ntuser.pol Access Denied After Convenience Roll-Up Install

$

After installing the convenience roll-up (KB3125574) on our 2008 R2 remote desktop servers, we started experiencing problems with roaming profiles. The RDS servers would randomly log 1509 errors during user log on or log off. My research turned up a report in the forum of a similar issue occurring on Windows 7 systems in 2014. (https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/d45d1c8d-f624-471a-a1f6-792e63beb446/windows-7-server-2003-roaming-profile-synchronization-error-at-logoff-ntuserpol?forum=winservergen) That person resolved the issue by uninstalling KB2918893. I uninstalled the convenience roll-up from our the RDS systems and the 1509 events stopped. I compared Userenv.dll on one of the RDS systems versus another that still has the convenience roll-up installed and they are different versions. It looks like KB2918893 may have introduced a bug into the LDR build of Userenv.dll that has now carried over to the convenience roll-up.

Here is a sample of the 1509 event.

User Profile Disks with Windows Search

We have 2 RDS Servers (2012R2) and work With User Profile Disks

We use outlook cached mode (Outlook 2013 SP1) because the link to our head office is to slow

The problem is that the outlook search isn't working properly.

Every time the users logs on, search indexes are recreated
This proces never finishes because the server is under a constant load, therefore search never works as it should.

In eventvwr, we see this error alot:

Crawl could not be completed on content source <winrt://{S-1-5-21-xxxxxxxxxxxx}/>.

Context: Application, SystemIndex Catalog

Details:

The parameter is incorrect. (HRESULT : 0x80070057) (0x80070057)

RDS 2012: new broker, copy collections?

Hi,

We have a new broker and would like to export settings of current collections then import them in the new broker (no migration, both brokers can still exist).
Please advise what to use, I saw some powershell lines but they do not do what I need for now.

J.

Jan Hoedt

Already found some powershell lines but the question actually is now if a server can be member of 2 collections at the same time, probably not right?
So we have to remove first from one, then add to other

The path in the registry linked to the object in the Local Group Policy: Limit number of connections - WinServer2012 R2

Hi,

I just need your help as I'm trying to get the exact path in the registry that linked with the object inside the Local Group Policy:Limit Number of connections.

This object in the group policy when I enable it and change the value of theRD MaximumConnectionsAllowed to 2,

It limits the remote connections to two connections only; but I need to change this value from the registry but I can't reach it's path.

For Windows Server 2012 R2

What I have checked is so far and didn't work:-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRNTCONTROLSET\Control\TerminalServer\WinStation\Rdp-TCP\MaxInstanceCount

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services\MaxInstanceCount

Keep RDP session alive Windows server 2012 R2

Hello,

We have several Windows Server 2012 R2 VMs hosting a software to convert MS Office files into PDF.

MS Office 2016 is installed on these servers. This application is not intended to be used by interactive users, and no one is supposed to log into the servers, except for maintenance purposes.

The main issue we are facing is in the interaction between the software and Office 2016.

The behavior changes depending on the DCOM configuration of Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.):

- If the Identity is set to "This user" or "The launching user", the software interacts with Office all the time, but the conversion is not satisfying, because all embedded objects are missing. When we start Excel for application, we see the message "Cannot use object linking and embedding". And this explains why some objects are not being converted.

- If the Identity is set to "The interactive user", and an interactive user is logged into the machine, the conversion works properly. But as soon as the user closes the RDP session, we start seeing the following error:

[Err.Number]=-2147467238, [Err.Description]=Automation error
The server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect. Check the username and password.

Our analysis is that the application is using the interactive user session when that user is logged in to interact with MS Office, but then when the user disconnects, the interaction with Office is not happening.

Is there a clean solution to resolve this issue? Is there a way to keep the session of an interactive user alive, even after closing the RDP window (without logging off)?

This issue did not exist on Windows Server 2008 R2 with MS Office 2010, and it is very penalizing to us.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Name mismatch certificate error when connecting to session host servers

I have an internal only RDS collection with 2 servers (RDSH) that gets connected to via RDC by entering the collection name (not the server name). The collection name has assigned DNS entries for the 2 servers so that round robin load balancing takes place. When a user launches an RDC connection and enters the collection name, an RDC certificate warning pops up with this warning:

The warning states that i am launching my RDC with the collection name of "ICStech"" (which I am) and then tries to connect to the 1st RDSH server in the round robin queue which in this case is "ICS015". ICS015 has a valid certificate from my internal CA:

However, the warning states that the server name on the cert is incorrect, I am assuming this is because its not the name of the of collection? What do I need to do to so that this error will not pop up to users who log in to the collection using the collection name?

I'm running a 2012R2 RDS environment. I launch an application and leave it running on my desktop. I login to my laptop and launch the same application (paint). The application is transferred to the laptop with the content added while on my desktop. The application is closed on the desktop with an error displayed. How can I prevent this from occurring if needed?

Logging out disconnects network card in 2016 with VirtualIP enabled

$

I have discovered a possible bug with Multipoint 2016 and the VirtualIP feature (i.e. "Assign a unique IP to each station"). When the VirtualIP feature is turned on with Multipoint 2016, almost every time I log out of Windows (USB or direct-connect) my network goes offline as well so that all stations stop working. I sometimes see a yellow exclamation mark on the network icon in the taskbar, while sometimes it shows a red x. A screen on the direct-connect station says "The connection has been lost. Attempting to reconnect to your station... The network is not available. The connection will be reinstalled when the network is available." After a couple of minutes the stations come back to life but then most often a yellow exclamation mark appears on the network card icon with the tooltip of "No Internet Access." When this happens, Internet and other network resources no longer work and my LAN stations no longer connect. Pinging the computer from the outside doesn't respond, but the USB and Direct-Connect stations can at least log in.

When this happens my IP is 169.254.45.3. When I ran IPConfig /renew in an elevated command prompt I get the message: "The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation." I updated my network card drivers but that didn't help. I set my IP to static but that didn't help. When I go to the properties of the network card I sometimes get "an unexpected error occurred" but then my second try it lets me in.

Rebooting solves the issue but ironically disabling my network card also solves the issue. When I disable my card, it freezes all of my stations but then after a couple of minutes everything comes back to life and the network card is enabled and functioning again. I assume it's the MultiPoint Repair service that is recovering my network card for me.

Disconnecting doesn't cause the issue. Logging out does. Is anyone else having this issue? Is there a solution other than turning off VirtualIP? I am pretty sure it's the VirtualIP with the issue, since when I turned if off during my troubleshooting I was able to log off without issues and when I turned it back on the issue came back immediately.

OpenText Exceed support

Hi,

I am migrating from Citrix XenApp to Windows 2012 R2 RDS RemoteApp. The application is OpenText Exceed On Demand. I see that application graphical quality is worse on RemoteApp than on Citrix XenApp. Is this application and RDP compatibility issue or matter of parameters that could affect graphical quality? Bandwidth is not the issues here.

Messed up with moving User Profile Disk, need some help

$

Hello,

Today i decided to move the UPD share to E:/ instead of C:/ where it initially was. I removed the service, copied over all the VHDX files to the new share on E:/, set up the permissions exactly like they were on the c:/ share and enabled the UPD service again.

Should have done some reading on this since it did not work out like i thought it would. After moving it, users logging on to their remote desktop only had read access, so nothing could be written or modified in their profiles. I also tried to enable to share on C:/ again and start the service, but then users could not even read from their VHDX file, it instead created a temporary profile.

So, from reading afterwards(should have done that before i did the move), copying stuff does not retain the permissions for files and folders. What can i do now? It seems the VHDX files on the initial share on c:/ has lost their permissions for each user. Can i somehow get those permissions back? If not, can i create a new empty share, log in each user to create a new VHDX file, mount the old VHDX files and copy stuff over from it to the new files? Or, is there a better solution for this?

Event 4005 - WinLogin [Windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated]

Folks,

Just noticed this becoming an issue on a Windows 2012 R2 Terminal Server after the last round of Patch Tuesday updates stemming from August 9th, 2016.

Typically, I'm rebooting the server every 24 hours to over-correct the issue - rebooting not being the best option here.

In previous discussions, it's advised to remove KB3002657 or KB3035132 from the server. Is this still the best option to restore full functionality even with the last round of patches and updates? Just to confirm, we are not using webroot as an AV solution.

Need help diagnosing and fixing numerous daily RDS problems

Hello Everyone.

RDS Failover Cluster Setup

Connection Broker

2x 2008R2 Enterprise RDS servers

I work in a company of about 300 RDS users. Daily I have issues with the RDS servers, where they either hang, or have some other weird problem that can usually only be resolved with a cold reboot. As you can imagine this does not go over well.

I need someone who is familiar with RDS issues to help me go through the entire setup and find out where the issues are. After a year of constantly looking for answers, going through events, finding workarounds for issues, I really just need to get these issues sorted out and have everything work smoothly.

Is there someone here willing and able to help me?

Some of the issues:

1) Server randomly hangs. Existing sessions hang, new sessions cannot happen. I cannot log into server with any method (rdc, admin rdc, local login via iDRAC).

2) Suddenly the RDS servers will randomly not be able to connect to the SQL or LOB server, but can access the server over unc path (indicative of bigger DNs issue?)

3) Unresponsive, sluggish, almost hanging. Then disabled Windows Update service or spooler service sort of fixes it

4) The one sever has been taken offline because the printer stopped working, and I couldn't get it back to working, so yes we're only running on one server now in a failover setup

5) Before that we were only running on the first server, as having both servers online would not allow users to login.

Originally the connection broker was set up on Server 2. In an attempt to fix the connection issue when having both servers online caused issues, I moved the connection broker off to its own server.

I have checked the server physically (Dell diagnostics), the hard drive file system is fine (sfc and chkdsk), I have even gone through the whole motion of WMI repair and repository rebuild. I need some real help, and the event logs are filled mostly with printer driver errors and OpsMgr Connector which I assume has something to do with the failed Service Center implementation from the previous IT company

PLease, if there is someone here who has worked with these problems before let me know where to start looking. If we can go through the settings just to keep the logins from stopping to respond it would already be a huge help.

Presenting RemoteApps from 2nd RDS into 1st RDS, RDWeb, Feed, etc

$

Did a small search online but couldn't quite find something related.

Our current setup is as follows.

 • TS1 - Server 2012 R2 - Remote Desktop Services [Web Access, Connection Broker, Session Host, RemoteApps published], has a TS1 Session Collection
 • TS2 - Server 2012 R2 - Remote Desktop Services [Session Host, RemoteApps published], has a TS2 Session Collection
 • RDWeb Feed published through Group Policy to End User Machines

TS1 and TS2 work great for end users on their own devices. RemoteApps appear in Start Menu under Work Resources, they can access RemoteApps on either TS servers.

TS1 is also a Remote Desktop server (or Terminal Server), for the full desktop experience, for some remote workers.

How do I get RemoteApps from TS2 available from TS1?

I know I could publish the RDWeb Feed to TS1, but wouldn't that cause all of TS1 RemoteApps to appear in Start Menu? Possibly confusing users as to which app to run?

I also know I could manually find and copy or link the RDP files to user's desktop, which is not as clean as the feed feature.

Thanks team!

GPU passthrough - Windows Server 2016, DDA

Assume I have is the 2016 Server OS software.

I need for you folks to tell me the specs of the system I have to install it on to get to the following end goal - when I RDP to the VM inside the VM when I look at the video part of device manager I will see the actual video driver of the video card - not some generic synthetic driver. This is what I believe DDA allows.

motherboard, RAM, CPU - please provide me me some generic specs and specifications such as e.g. it has to have xxx chipset , x number of cores, generation x Intel ........

video cards - what kind and how many - e.g. your graphics card will need to support Open GL version for example like Nvidia

What OS should the VM be running on the 2016 host be for best quality - e.g. you should use Windows 10 Enterprise

what OS /RDP client should I be running in the remote connecting client computer - e.g. you will need Windows 10 Enterprise and RDP v. xxxx configured with the following parameters .... to get the best experience; on the server end in the VM you should use the following settings for the video ... and on the host you should use the following settings for the video ....

So again to repeat the end goal - when I RDP from a remote workstation to the VM running on the 2016 host and I go into Device Manager on the VM I will see the actual video driver of the video card - not some generic synthetic driver - again this is what I believe GPU passthrough/DDA is supposed to allow in 2016.

I very much appreciate in advance attention to my question.
