Redirected printers not showing in Devices and Printer - unable to change defaults

$

We have a Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Server and are having problems with redirected printers on it. The problem occurs for users running the RDP client from Windows 7, 8 and 10.

Users are connecting over a WAN connection and are needing to print to their local network printers. The printers are connected successfully to their local workstations, and the option to redirect printers is selected in the RDP client. When users remote connect to the server the local printers show as available from within an application, such as Word, and they can print successfully using them, however they don't show in the Devices and Printers in the remote desktop session.

The problem is they want to change the default settings on the printer to be single-sided B&W and the default is Auto-color, double-sided. This can be changed manually from within the application but it doesn't stick once they log off and back on again.

Following the recommendation from this link:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/243942  I was able to change the defaults by going to the redirected printer in Devices and Printers and making the change under both Printing Preferences and Printing Defaults on the printers, then waiting for at least a minute before logging off and the settings are persistent for that user through a logoff and back on again.

We had major printing issues with this server and printers when using the Windows Easy Print driver as they constantly randomly never printed jobs, and Microsoft Support concluded we needed to disable using Windows Easy Print drivers first and load matching drivers on both the local workstation and the server. This resolved the problems they had re the non-printing, but it meant changes to the default settings had to be made on the redirected printer as above, as changing them on the local printer doesn't carry through the redirection.

I was able to configure the redirected printers at the time as they showed up in the Devices and Printers, but for some reason they don't any more. The changed defaults have stayed persistent for users that the change was made on, but they now want it made for new users. Also checking for existing users they no longer have the redirected printers showing up in Devices and Printers either.

There have been no changes to the server that I am aware of that would cause the printers to no longer show up. Directly attached printers show up OK, just not the redirected printer. Checking the device manager does show the print queue for the redirected printer, and as mentioned earlier, it's available to print to.

I thought perhaps copying the registry configuration of a working configured printer and loading that each time a user logs on to the Remote Desktop Server might be an option, but the redirected printers change the redirection number each time so they wouldn't match.

Any thoughts or suggestions about how to either get the redirected printers showing up again, or configure them for persistent defaults would be greatly appreciated.

RemoteApp 2016

We're trying to change the location of the RemoteApp resource that is stored in the users profile under 'Appdata\Roaming\ResourceName'. We can do this for Web Access page but how do you change the path for start menu..?

Here you can see the Calc is in same folder as Virtual Desktop' but in Web Access it's in it's own folder

As you can see above, in the start menu the calc is in same folder as Virtual Desktop icon, but via Web Access it's in it's own folder!

Anyone know how to change the Start Menu to be same as Web Access

Cannot remote into some servers

I use RDP Manager 2.7

I have Sonicwall at each location. I VPN using Sonic's client and then RDP locally into a server. Some serves work, some unable to establish connection. When i restart my computer some connections begin to work and then stop after a while. Sometimes when i establish connection and use my credentials RDP just shuts off. I tried to reinstall but nothing helps. It doesn't always happen but like today I can't remote into a few serves.

Any thoughts where should I look? I looked at Even Viewer on servers where it fails:

Windows 8.1 Pro cannot log into RemoteApp running on Windows Server 2012 R2

I have setup a vm running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and have enabled multiple RemoteApps.  Everything is setup correctly and I can use RD Web Access to access the portal and connect to the remoteapps from any computer except my own.  I am running Windows 8.1 Pro and when I log into the RD Web Access portal, click on one of the apps,  it looks like it's loading the session, but gets stuck on Preparing Windows.  Everything else up to that point looks like it loads correctly, (i.e. - Applying Group Policy Settings, applying desktop, etc...).  When I log into my Windows 7 dev machine, I can access and run everything just fine.  So there must be something between the Windows 8 and 2012 that isn't working quite right.

I have tried logging into the portal as myself and test users...same result.

any ideas?

User CALs for Local users on a Domain joined 2016 server

We have a system that runs some inventory management software that requires local accounts for remote terminals to log into the server.  (this is not software that I manage) In the past, the servers were running Windows Server 2008 and were not joined to the domain.  We have finally convinced the powers that be that these servers need to be joined to our Domain if they are going to continue to run on our network, as well as the need to upgrade them to Windows Server 2016.

We have run into an issue in our Dev environment when testing to get this working.  We have purchased 24 RDS User cals and added them to our existing license server.  The new domain joined 2016 servers are pointed to the license server and everything works fine as long as you are logging in with an AD account.  However, when logging in with a local account, we get an error message stating there are no RDS user CALs available.  Running the RDS license Diagnoser as a local user shows that the Application server is looking at the license server, but is showing 0 licenses available.

I have seen others with this same scenario and the answer was it's not possible to use a license server on a domain joined computer for RDS cals for local users.  The question I haven't seen answered is this:

Will it work if we install the CALs locally on the Domain joined Windows Server 2016 machine that the users are connecting to via RDS with local accounts?

Hi,

our workstations with Windows 10 pro are in this weekend updated to version 1803. For main system we use RemoteAPP aplications on Windows server 2012R2 (Windows server 2012R2 is full updated). After update on client station are RemoteAPP slower, and  right mouse button is unresponsive, or react verly long time...

It is a big problem for us.

PS: after replace mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll from older version Windows 10 is all OK. but this is not a solution.

Thanks.

rds session opens windows in the background that can only be closed by task manager

we created a new collection and published it on our RDweb. However, when a user logs on to the rdweb session and opens the app, 2 remote desktop sessions open in the background. when we sign out and close the rdweb session this window runs in the background and can only be closed from the task manager.

All client OS is Wndows 10 - Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17134.285]

We have 2 collections.

Server01 - AD & RDS Licensing Server

Server02 - RDS Session Host (this is where the app is hosted)

Server03 - All other RDS Roles (Gateway + Broker) + RDS Session Host for Word, Excel & Outlook.

Update:

This happens only when we publish apps from the "Server02", this is the 2nd Session Host server.

RDS User Profile Showing Same Desktop for all users

We have an issue with RDS user profiles. Whenever a user logs into a RDP session with their respective username and password, they all have the same desktop. There are files and folders created by "some" user which we cannot trace. How do we setup the rds users to logon to the server using RDP but have their respective sessions.

RDS licensing

As default only 2 users can logon to a server using RDP. How can we increase this to 7 users. What roles and features need to be installed and how do we deploy these licenses. Do we use user cals or device cals?

RDS deployment gone haywire after settng up 2nd Session Host Server

Server01 - AD + RDS Licensing Server

Server02 - SQL + RDS Session Host

Server03 - RDS Web + Broker + Session Host

We deployed RDS on Server03 and published apps using collections on RDWeb. However due to requirements of a legacy app on Server02, we installed the RDS Session Host role on Server02. After this, the entire deployment is playing up.

1. we created a collection with apps on Server03 (Word Excel etc). It appears as it should on the RDWeb. We created a 2nd collection on Server03 with the legacy app on Server02. Now when we logon into RDWeb the app shows correctly. However 2 RDP windows open up in the background. I can only close this from the task manager.

On closer checking, I removed the 1st collection and unpublished all the apps from the 2nd collection. Now when I go to the RDweb, It contains a RDP icon, which on clicking goes to Server02.

How is this possible? How can I create a collection that has the legacy app from Server02 and can open normally from RDWeb without having to open another RDP session.

2. After setting up RDS Session Host role on Server02, when we RDP to Server03, it takes us to Server03 desktop. Why is it so?

3. Users RDping to Server02 have temp profiles and on checking the users folder we see a lot of Username-Backup-0 folders. How can we correct this?

how to rdweb publish an app on another server or rdp to another server

Server01 - AD

Server02 - SQL01

Server03 - RDS - all services on one server

All the above servers are windows 2016

We have published a few apps on Server03 and all works fine. However, we have a legacy app on "Server02" which is an exe file that can be run from the same server, we cannot install this on the RDS or publish it for reasons purely the app will work on the same server its core module and SQL DB are installed.

How I can let users access server02 to rdp and run the app with limited access to resources or can we setup rdweb and publish this app on server02 using the existing license and setup. what roles must i install on server02 to acheive this or kindly suggest the best way.

we have more than 8 users accessing this legacy app regulary.

Ensuring only known devices can connect to RDS

Hi,

I have an RDS environment built out on Azure VMs.  There is a business requirement to add a greater layer of security it the RDS service by only allowing known devices (only corporate owned) to connect to it.  Is there anything within RDS that would provide this type of functionality or is there some additional software layering that can be added.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Rob

The task you are trying to do can't be completed because remote desktop services is currently busy. Please try again in a few minutes. Other users should still be able to log on

Hi Guys.

I know this question has been asked a number of times before but from searching I cant seem to find an answer. Has anyone finally found a solution. I have a windows 2016  virtual server and just recently started getting this error when trying to login with one of the users there. I have about 3 users there but there is just 1 that can't seem to be able to login anymore and gets this error message. system is up to date, I tried a session reset for this user but still gets the error. I haven't tried restarting the server yet, I would like to find a solution that wont require a restart of the server. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Windows Server 2016 RDS design

Hi,

I need to design and implement a small server environment for a company. They need RDS. I know about the different roles and i've setup a single RDS 2012 (quick start) in the past.

My question is about dividing the Broker and Session Host roles between the available servers. I was thinking about a setup with 2 session host servers that both can handle (capacity wise) all 50 users. So if one fails, all users connect to the other one.

Because i have 3 VM servers available for the RDS setup, i want to setup a server with the broker role. But that would be a single point of failure, isn't it?

I've learned that the licensing role can be installed on a DC, is that correct?

Now what would you experts do? Can you give me advise on how to best setup a redundant RDS environment with (if possible) 3 VM's available?

Hello,

I'm facing a strange issue on my Windows Server 2016 : when I open a session, with a local user or from the AD, I get a black screen during a very long time.

I've try to install the KB3213986 from the Microsoft website  but I have a message like it's not the good version for my server.

And I have this kind of error in my events logs. I don't know if it's linked with my error but start menu do not work and I see this :

The server CortanaUI did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

I've try to make a windows update but I have an error to.

Thanks for your help

Hi,

Is there a server version that can be installed as a Virtual Remote Desktop Server on a windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Server which can use the GPU installed on the physical Hyper-V 2012 server? We don't want to create multiple VMs with VDI functionality.

Thanks.

Missing username and domain off corporate network

Username and domain does not automatically populate when off corporate network. We have a 2016 RDS environment with 2 RD Gateway server.

We also have a 2008 RDS environment with the same RD Gateway settings that populate username and domain off network.

Tried:

disabling Network Location Awareness on client

different settings in client RDP app

changed rd gateway policies

RD CALS Grace Period

Hello Experts

We have 2016 RD Cals Server on User Licensing. If this server goes down, is there a grace period we are offered?

and

If the RD Cals licensing server goes down, will the new user who doesn't have a license assigned still be able to login? Like in terminal server scenario or Citrix Servers

Also if the user has license assigned, will they still be able to login if the license server is still down?
