RDWeb - External access issue

$

Hi there,

I've a few problems accessing the RDWeb from external. When I try to download a .rdp file, it is downloading with 0 bytes/s and also has problems loading the icons of the published apps. This issue is only on path "/RDWeb/Pages/rdp" (path of rdp files and icons).

External and internal access link: rdp.domain.com
Servername of RD Gateway and RDWeb: de-srdp01comp.domain.com
Serverconstruction for RDS/TS:
de-srdp01comp.domain.com: RD Gateway, Broker and RDWeb
de-sapp01comp.domain.com: RD Host
de-swap01comp: Windows Application Proxy running in DMZ (not in domain)

I already tried to set the Identity to "NetworkService" but that was not a solution.

Does anyone have a solution for that?

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Windows Server 2016 Essentials and RDS - Legal or Not?

Hi, I´m crazy about WS Essentials Edition and RDS licensing. I dont care about it is supported or not. I know it is bad to have DC and RDS on same instance, but this solution is for like 5 users.

I only care about legality of this solution, so it is legal to use RDS with Essentials? If not, can you point me to any MS document where they say it is not legal? I will buy RDS CAL of course.

Thank you for any reply!

How to change RDS License Type (Windows 2008 R2)

$

Hello Team,

Currently our server is configured with a license server type "TS or RDS Per Device". The server mode is configured for "Per User", but diagnostic is presenting the following problem:

The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per User licensing mode and No Redirector Mode, but license server servername01.local does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes:
Product version: Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2
Licensing mode: Per User
License type: RDS CALs

The suggested solution is:

Use RD Licensing Manager to install the appropriate licenses on the license server or change the licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server.

How I can resolve this issue? The intent is to have the server license running in "Per User" mode.

HTML 5 RDS issue with ILO and ESX console

Hi There,

We have recently moved from Citrix XEN to MS Windows Hyper-V to provision our virtual machines to students to teach them how to work with certain hardware/software. To reach our goal we've setup 5 blades running Server 2019 Datacenter Edition with Hyper-V and an extra blade that runs our RDS environment. Since we have students remoting in from a variety of places and companies and RDP is blocked by most we opted to use the new HTML 5 webclient.

The problem we are facing is that in an HTML5 session, whenever a students accesses a ProLiant iLO through either .NET or Java the keyboard stops functioning, or should we say, the key mapping no longer makes sense. The ENTER key works but everything else is not resulting in output. If we take over our HTML5 session with RDP we can see that the input is in fact there, but it is gibberish.. in other words a W becomes a / and a ? becomes a ".In NOTEPAD or WORD or any other application the input is proper and keyboard mapping is fine. As soon as we open an iLO session or even the ESX Console the keyboard mapping is off.

We thought of raising a case with MicroSoft, however, HTML 5 webclient still being a BETA Product we figured try the forum first.

Thanks!

Dimitri.

Is there a chance to make a machine that is created on VDI host available as part of RDS deployment?

We are getting the below error while deploying VDIs

Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component.

The error seems to be a generic one but what needs to be done to fix it in RDS environment.

RDS Hybrid Deployment

Hi

I have a question around deploying RDS in a Hybrid environment (On-site and Cloud)

My thinking was to take the Broker and RDWeb\Gateway roles to the cloud and my Session hosts across multi pal sites.

My Question is can this be done? is this supported if yes please point me in the direction of some assistance or guidance on this type of deployment.

Windows Server RDS Freezing with Flickering "Not Responding" in the top bar

$

We have around 15~ Remote Desktop Session Host servers of varying versions (2012 R2, 2016 and 2019) which are experiencing freezing and flickering issues with "Not Responding" appearing in the top bar and the program being unresponsive when switching between tabs. Other symptoms include screen flickering and, when in Task Manager, the tabs sometimes disappear until you roll the mouse over them. These issues started appearing after the weekend of 23rd March 2019 (23/03/19).

I have been scouring forums looking for other people with the same issue but can't find anyone with similar symptoms except someone called Chris_UKDE and his questions haven't been answered either.

At first, we thought that this was caused by a Windows Update but we have been through all of the updates and cannot find any consistent update or lack of update across the servers that seems to have caused the problem. We thought it might have been KB4489889 but after uninstalling this, the problem still remains.

We have opened a case with Microsoft and we are waiting for them to analyse some logs that they gathered on Friday and they have advised various registry fixes and disabling hardware acceleration but none of these have worked. I am taking to the forums to see if anyone else is a. having any luck with their diagnosis and b. having these issues at all(!) and c. if we manage to fix it, to share it with you so you don't have to experience the same pain we have.

The issue does NOT appear to happen in Safe Mode BUT when running a Selective Startup from MSConfig, these issues still happen, eluding that it's still a Microsoft element causing the problem. We are mainly seeing the problems in Microsoft Office programs but we do get a few issues in other Microsoft programs, such as Internet Explorer/Task Manager and also Chrome.

Most of the servers are running on VMWare ESXi 6.0-6.5 but we do have one native Windows Server with the problem. We have tried updating/uninstalling VMWare tools but this does not seem to fix anything. We also thought this might have been related to the video driver, so we booted the server with "Base Video" options in MSConfig but this still didn't fix the problems.

I am hoping that there are others in the same position as me, looking for an answer but having no forum to discuss it on, hence this post. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Remotedesktopgateway - Configuration issue

$

Hi everyone,

I have a Win Server 2016 with RD Services on it. Everything is running fine but Remotedesktopgateway cannot be configured by me. I installed the role without errors but configuration ends in the error:

RD Gateway Configuration Failed on [X] With Error: Unable to configure the RD Gateway server: [X] . The error is You cannot call a method on a null-valued expression.. (event-id 4119)

I found no solutions to resolve this issue on the web. I think the problem occurs already during the installation process because the RPC application is missing in the IIS. It's not the first installation of the RDG. Maybe there are some old entries in the registry what cause this failure but I do not know where to search ... Would be nice to get some help from the community ...

Thanks,
Chris

Issue with Automatic Scaling of RDS Hosts in Azure

$

Does anyone have a resolution for this issue?

I'm trying to implement this in our Azure environment: https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Automatic-Scaling-of-9b4f5e76/view/Discussions#content

When we run this script against our RD Connection Broker that has multiple collections, we have an issue with all servers in a single collection being set to drain mode.

Details: We have 2 Collections on the RD Connection Broker. Both Collections have 3 RD Host Servers. The RD Host servers in each Collection are each in their own Resource Group, meaning all RD Host Servers for a collection are grouped into a single resource group. I set the Config to keep up 2 Servers in off peak mode and run the script against a resource group. All servers in Collection A were put into Drain Mode. All 3 RD Host servers in the collection had a user logged in, so that may have caused an issue as well. Can anyone offer suggestions on how to force this script to only focus on a single collection? Or is there a better way of accomplishing this?

Thanks in advance!

RDS 2012 R2 - errors 802, 1296 and 1306 - user cannot connect to remote computer

$

Hello,

This is my first post, and it's more of a "this is what worked for us and I couldn't find this fix ANYWHERE" thing.

We have recently setup a new RDS environment to replace a pathetic wheezing old TS system.

We are running 9 session host servers in three pools hosting three collections - A, B and C. All the session host servers appear in the pools, accept new connections, and apps are configured and working. No problems here.

We have 2 web front end servers in our DMZ, Port 443 is open, things work fine.

We have 2 gateway servers, also in our DMZ in a gateway farm. Work great, no problem. Connectivity is excellent, internal firewalls on but the necessary configuration has been done so everything is talking and happy.

We have two connection broker servers in a high availability configuration and a different namespace for the front end than the domain (we can't use our internal domain name for our externally facing RDS farm).

However, we would get intermittent failures upon logging in, no matter what collection we were accessing. The web servers present the login page and we could successfully authenticate (using ADFS proxies in our DMZ back into the domain) against AD - I verified this in the logs on the broker servers. The user would still fail to connect to the remote computer. The error we received was a generic "unable to connect to remote computer. If problem persists, contact your System Administrator" and the connection broker would record the following 3 alerts:

Event 802: RD Connection Broker failed to process the connection request for user domain\username. Error: Element not found.

Event 1296: Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed while getting redirection packet from Connection Broker.
User : domain\username
Error: Element not found.

Event 1306: Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed to redirect the user domain\username. Error: NULL

The user can try again, but the same error would likely be thrown, although sometimes they can log in and connect.

I googled constantly. Some had success modifying GPO Default Domain Policy: Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Remote Desktop Services / Remote Desktop Session Host / RD Connection Broker / Use RD Connection Broker load balancing - ENABLED. Didn't help; backed it out.

Others had success modifying a registry key on the broker servers: HKLM – System – Current Control Set – Control – Terminal Server – WinStations – RDP-TCP – Security Layer changed from 1 to 0.I didn't like doing this (not fully aware of the security "feature(s)" this disabled). Made no difference - backed it out.

Deleting and recreating collections did not help. Tried adding the server farm to the "Windows Authorization Access Group" (really only helpful for systems that began as Win 2k boxes). No go.

Put in a call with Microsoft. They give me a hotfix (which makes me a bit dubious - I didn't install it), and about 7 patches to run (which had been - our servers were up to date). I wasn't feeling it.

So I fired up procmon and monitored tssdis.exe on the broker servers. According to procmon, everything was a success - except for two keys missing from the registry on both broker servers: HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\System\DNSClient. Procmon showed that key could not be read. Googling was useless, so I decided to manually create the key. Failed - procmon showed the key name as "New Key #1" no matter what I called it. Deleted it and used the following powershell command to successfully create the key: New-Item -Path HKLM:\Software\Policies\Microsoft\System -Name DNSclient -Value "Default Value"

The key was created. YAY! I still didn't know what needed going in there, it was just an empty key. I ran procmon again, and got a clue: tssids was trying to read a value: "PrimaryDNSSuffix" and returning blank. OK - inside of the "DNSclients" new key I created a new string value containing our internal domain name, doing this on both connection broker clients. The end result looked like this:

HKLM:\Software\Policies\Microsoft\System\DNSClient - "PrimarydnsSuffix"  "yourdomainname.com"

INSTANTLY, everyone connected. I could access everything using my acct and my testing accounts. The errors cleared up in the event logs. The sun began shining and the IT gods were, for awhile, placated.

OK - if you are getting 802, 1296, and 1306 errors in RDS 2012 R2 - before lessening security, and before modifying global GPO settings, just check procmon against tssdis.exe on the broker service and see if that key is missing. It's the only thing that worked for us.

Remote Desktop not working anymore on Windows 10 & Windows 7

Hi,

since a few days, we have issues while trying to connect from Windows 7 & 10 clients to a Windows Server 2012R2 RD Farm.

RD farm is composed of two RD session hosts + 1 RD Gateway.

Windows 10 clients are build 1809.

The clients and the servers are in different domains with one-way trust. It worked just fine until a few days ago, when clients started getting the below error message. In the TerminalServices-Gateway/Operational log file, I can find a lot of 312 and 313 events which indicate that connections are not authorized.

I have no clue what changed as compared to when the connections where working fine.

We introduced the Microsoft Remote Desktop app as a workaround, and strange enough that works, but it is not liked very much by our users cos it has some drawbacks.

Can anyone help me, or point me where to look at?

Thanks,

the connection was denied because the user account is not authorised for remote login

we have a 2016 RDS farm and we have few Session host collection in it and users are able to use the session host.

Now when i am trying to give access to new users in the existing collection, the user is able to access the session host for certain duration after providing access. if he tries to login to the session host next day he is getting the error

"the connection was denied because the user account is not authorised for remote login"

if i remove the user and add again, the access works for certain period of time and again the next day he is getting the same error. the username is in the properties of the user group collection and still facing the same error. the RDS farm is per user based and there are available user licenses.

Please help on this issue, im not able to trace it as no events are logged in event viewer.

RDS 2012 R2: A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the (name-of-service) service

Hi guys,

On a random base (daily, weekly) we're experiencing major log-in problems on our Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services farm. The VM's are hosted on Hyper-V 2008 hosts and we're not using Citrix techniques etc.

Users are reporting that they cannot log-in, the log-in sessions hangs with a blank screen when loading their user profile (e.g. Please Wait For The User Profile Service).

In the System event log of the server on which the user is logging on the following errors are shown:

Source:        Service Control Manager
Date:          23-12-2014 7:28:01
Event ID:      7011
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Description:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

…and after 30 (or sometimes 60) seconds, the same error only another service (in random order):

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

…and after exactly 30 seconds, the same error only another service:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UxmSms service.

etcetera, with the following errors:

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Netman service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the AudioEndPointBuilder service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the WPDBusEnum service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the NlaSvc service.

The Portable Device Enumerator Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the TrkWks service.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

These errors are logged continuously.

An administrator cannot solve this since he isn't able to login in as well (console or remotely), only a hard reset of the VM is possible to use the affected server again.

I took different steps to solve this problem without any success, like:

- Installing the latest Windows updates
- Removed unnecessary printer drivers, print monitors and print processors (no local printers/drivers are installed, only Remote Desktop Easy Printer driver is used)
- Searched different forum posts, but found only hotfixes for Windows Server 2008 R2.

Can someone please help me with this annoying problem?

Many thanks!!

EDIT:
Of course is increasing the time-out not really an option here... http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13765.event-id-7011-service-timeout.aspx

map a drive through RemoteApps...

We are using a hosted solution and we have a link in RemoteApps to a shared folder on the server. We can access it via the remote desktop Web portal; however, I need to be able to map this drive to our desktop.  I can then scan documents to it and it will upload to the server, since it is a shared folder on the server. However, it is not allowing me to map this tsclient folder through RDWeb.  I was thinking we could run a powershell script to login to RDWeb App but I am failing figuring out how to map that location to a drive letter on my local system.  The saas provider won't allow for Webdav.  I am also thinking about trying to setup a VPN connectionl; however, I would like to without it.

Any suggestions would greatly help!

RDS CAL Grace Period

Hello,

I'm a rep for an Emerson Impact Partner. We sell the R740's to customers and they come with CALs but not RDS CALs. However, I've seen something about RDS CALs having a grace period. This is a Server 2016 machine. When does this grace period start(when it ships, when we try to remote in for the first time, when we give it a 2016 license, etc.) and how long is it?

Thanks,

Black screen after login | RDP in Windows Server 2012R2 | VMWare remote console in Windows Server 2012R2

Hello everybody

I even have a scenario with Windows Server 2012, where on the remote console via VMWare I enter username / password and then black screen.

I try to do Remote Desktop, open the remote console and then close without asking for Login.

I can only log in to the VMWare console in safe mode.

All the tips I try to apply are not successful.

I appreciate any information that can identify where this failure is and avoid redoing the installation.
