Removing a single keypack RDS CALs from licensing server AND re-using them

$

Hey RDS techies,

I have a license server with 30 Per device CALs installed on it. I've got another 45 Per user CALs now but by mistake I have installed them as Per Device CALs on same license server which created another keypack ID in licensing manager for these 45 CALs. All these 30+45 CALs are issued now, however, I would like to remove these 45 Per deivce CALs keypack now and want to install them as Per User CALs.

Is it possible ? I'm not sure if the "Convert partial/full licenses" option that is shown in licensing manager works here!

Also, I have come across below commands to uninstall particular keypacks from licensing manager,

Get-WmiObjectWin32_TSLicenseKeyPack

wmic /namespace:\\root\CIMV2 PATH Win32_TSLicenseKeyPack CALL UninstallLicenseKeyPackWithId X

So, do these commands give our RDS CALs back once it uninstalls them from particular keypack ???

I was thinking that, this only removes the entries from licensing manager but doesn't give our CALs back to re-use them!

Any help in clarifying these would be much helpful. Thanks in advance!

I am using a remoteapp application from a windows server 2019 setup. During this remoteapp session I am getting a popup concerning upgrading a malwarebytes subscription on the server.

I do not want users using a remoteapp to be seeing popups from the server ... how do I get rid of them from showing?

Vpn to,server without RDS for users to login from outside office

hello all,

I appreciate any feedback on this question. we are trying to have six users work remotely from outside the office. We have an server 2012 r2 in a workgroup environment. No RDS licenses.

are we able to set up VPN through the router for six users to log in to the server at same time if there are no RDS licenses? Or can we set up VPN directly to six computers desktops using the router.

Thank you

RDS Server 2016 & SSL's

Hi everyone

We have recently renewed our SSL wildcard (GoDaddy) certificate and have successfully installed it.  However we now have a problem where some users are unable to connect and I suspect its an issue with SSL and possibly something I've not done correctly.  Below is a brief overview of the RDS deployment

7 Servers - 1xGateway/web access, 1xConnection broker/licensing, 4xdesktop hosts and 1xapplication host.
SSL Wildcard purchased from GoDaddy and assigned to each server.  CN *.abcd.co.uk

Server FQDN (as seen from connection broker) is server.ad.domain.com (I think this has changed since adding the new SSL from server.abcd.co.uk but can't be certain).
Forward looking DNS A record abcd.co.uk set to private IP for gateway and connection broker servers.

We have a mixture of W7 & W10 Pro clients, a large number of HP thin clients and a few Apple Mac's.

Connecting internal seems to work for Windows user and some thin clients but the Apple users and some of the HP clients cannot get on.  If we change the Gateway settings from defined to automatically detect on on the connection broker, the Apple clients work but not some of the thin clients.

I am convinced the root cause is the way we have configured our Wildcard SSL which has effected the gateway and other settings.

Unfortunately, I cannot find any literature which gives in depth instructions on how to configure and assign SSL certificates from start to finish for an RDS deployment.

Prior to us renewing the certificates, everything was working fine.

If there is anyone who can advise, then I would be grateful.

Multiple password policy in Active Directory Domain

We have a single forest, single domain AD environment. A password policy has been set through 'Default Domain Policy'.

We would like to implement second password policy with different complexity requirements. As per the official Microsoft document thus can be achieved through Fine Grain Password policy.

Please confirm that there is no such system limitations and another password policy can be configured for application administrator's.

Kindly respond at your earliest.

Remote desktop host goes to sleep after a very few minutes of inactivity

Power options have been checked. Both systems are running Windows 10 version 1909.

I have Wake on Lan on the client machine and it will reawaken the host but when it does, the sound is no longer redirected and the only solution I have found to that is to reboot the host. It will then work until the next time it goes to sleep.

Blackscreen after logon

Hi

We have a problem with logon times on our RDP 2012R2 servers. It must be related to the roaming profile.

The problem:

The users logon on via RDP. The profile gets loaded, applying group policy settings and so on, and then the "black screen" starts. I can take up to 15 minutes before the users desktop is visible and ready to work.

While there are black screen I can press CTRL+ALT+DEL and go to the task manager. The only process that is working is explorer.exe.

If we create a new profile the users are logged in less than a minute, but the logon process and the time for the black screen increases over time. It happens for all our users on our 30 RDS servers.

Any suggestions?

Server 2012 R2 RDSH User profile disks, exclude temp directories

$

Hi,

As per this Google bug page: here

We cannot use the legacy browser extension in our session host environment.

It seems the work around is to exclude the temp and tmp directories of a user profile, from their user profile disk.

Can someone advise the appropriate syntax to use in the Remote Desktop deployment properties section of server manager to exclude these folders? Everything I have tried thus far has not worked, and my only working way of doing this is to change their environment variables at login via a script deployed using group policy. This is not ideal, as this does not complete before the user's session is initialised, meaning it is not effective until their second login.

Excluding the folder via deployment properties would be far neater, and more effective from the get go.

Thanks

Is my Windows Server blocking my App from running properly?

Hi Folks,

I have a small program which pings a remote API to obtain football stats.

The App works fine on my W10 laptops, but as it runs 24/7 I decided to put it on a dedicated VPS server.

However, it isn't able to access the API remotely. Windows appears to be blocking any API calls.

I can access the API without a problem from the server using Firefox, so it doesn't appear to be an issue with the API, although IE doesn't work properly.

I checked the Event Log it shows the following:

An account failed to log on.
Subject:
    Security ID:        NULL SID
    Account Name:        -
    Account Domain:        -
    Logon ID:        0x0

Logon Type:            3

Account For Which Logon Failed:
    Security ID:        NULL SID
    Account Name:        ADMIN
    Account Domain:

Failure Information:
Failure Reason:        Unknown user name or bad password.
    Status:            0xC000006D
    Sub Status:        0xC0000064

I am guessing that the problem is with WIndows as my program has the API username/password hard-coded.

I've tried adding the program to the list of "safe aps", but it is still failing.

Any gurus out there have any ideas?

Many thanks,

Pete

All instances of Windows Explorer slow on all users

At random intervals Windows Explorer seems to stop responding/become very slow on all signed in users (+- 20 users). Overall Processor usage is usually around 10~15%, but when this happens all logical cores rise to 100% for 2~3 seconds and then drop back to normal values again. During these 2~3 seconds Windows Explorer is responding to clicks, but the main windows stays white. This happens on both local disks as well as network drives.

Our setup is as follows:
- Windows Server 2016 std
- Server: HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10, 2x Intel Xeon Gold 6130, 192 GB memory, 8x 900 GB SAS 15k in RAID5 (controller cache enabled)

RDP Error - Contact Network Administrator

Hi Team,

I am facing the RDP session issues as you can find in my attachments.

In our environment we take RDP to a  Windows Server 2012 R2 (Jump Server) - connected to our environment Via VPN Tunnel or with Public IP.

The Jump server is connected to another 3 Servers in different location (datacenter) via VPN Tunnel. So first we take remote to Jump server and from there we take remote to other 3 Servers in different location.

But right now we are having issues with RDP when we take from Jump Servers to Other 3 servers. I am getting the errors as per the attachment.

Steps Taken:

ON JUMP Server

  1. Check Telnet to other 3 servers for 3389 - Working
  2. Tried to take remote with Others Users - Didn't connect
  3. Updated some windows patches and Restarted the Server.
  4. Even created a new User on 3 servers and tried to take remote from JUMP - Not working.
  5. Tried to take remote to other local servers(Same Jump server environment)  - Working.
  6. Verified VPN Tunnel Connectivity also from firewall level.

ON 3 Remote servers

  1. Server Still working.
  2. They can able to Login with same users from local .

Please help me to resolve this issue .

Thanks in Advance

Remote Desktop Connection Broker Service not starting

$

Hi Guys,

My Remote Desktop Connection Broker service (Windows server 2016) is unable to start, when I try to start it this is what appears:

I than go and take a look at the dependencies tab and it says that, This service depends on the following system components

Remote Procedure Call (PRC)
Windows Internal Database

I can see that the “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” services is Running fine but “Windows Internal Database” is not.

Here is where my problem is:

When I try to start “Windows Internal Database” services this is what it comes back with:

I then go to the “Log On” tab and the user that is trying to logon to start this service is

NT SERVICE\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID

So the problem is clearly with this user and/or password.

My Question is:

  1. How can I confirm that this user is created? Where can I find it?
  2. If this user is not created or has been removed, can I re-create this user again? If so, how?
  3. How did this happen?

Kind Regards

RDS Services across regions

Hi,

Can anyone please point me in the direction of being able to use 1 URL for multiple RDS deployments?

I believe an RDS gateway can be a member of multiple RDS deployments but not the Web server so if someone logs onto a webserver using the single URL they may not get the "correct" web server.

Thanks in advance

2019 RDS and Windows 10 Clients Remote App starts and stays minimized

We are testing LABELVIEW 2019 in our environment on a brand new and fully patched 2019 RDS Server.

Two out of three published apps LABEL MATRIX Converter and LABELVIEW Converter open up just fine,

however the main LABELVIEW 2019 App opens minimised and stays minimised. The Win 10 Pro client

has also all the latest updates and is 1809 version.

The same LABELVIEW 2019 APP launches fine on a Remote Desktop.

Thank you!

How can you see the password hint when trying to connect to a windows 2008 r2 server using remote desktop?

I changed the administrator password on a windows 2008 r2 server last night and am now trying to use remote desktop services (RDC) to connect to the server from a windows 7 profession pc. I can't for the life of me remember the password - and need to see the password hint when connecting. How can you see the password hint when using remote desktop to connect to a windows server 2008 R2. Or is there another way to see the hint without actual physical access to the server?

2019 RDS Connection Problems, Errors, Weirdness

$

I'm trying to set up 2019 RDS to replace our 2008R2 Terminal Server.  I used this paper as a guide, but did not publish any apps, just using session based desktops: https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Windows-Server-2016-Remote-ffc383fe

I have a broker server, gateway server, web server and two session hosts.  Licensing server is running on the broker server but not activated yet.  I also haven't enabled the gateway server yet as I'm just testing internally. So far I have just one collection pointing to one of the session host servers. We are not testing any remote apps, just session based desktops.

Here's the problem:

  • I'm able to initially get two users connected (either directly on the broker server, or through the Remote Desktop Web Access page) If a third tries to connect, it hangs at a black screen and eventually gives the message "failed to reconnect to your remote session.  Please try to connect again".  I would expect to see a message about not enough licenses or do you want to bump someone else off.
  • During the black screen time, and before the error message, the active two users get bumped off, but then automatically reconnect.
  • If I then log off one or both of the active users, I'm unable to log anyone into the server again.  They all get the black screen and the error message.  At this point I'm only able to log into the server on the console.  The only way to fix this is to reboot the broker server, and the cycle begins again.

Here's what shows up in the Event Viewer on the Broker server:

  • When active users get bumped out theTerminalServices-LocalSessionManager log shows an error like this: “Session 3 has been disconnected, reason code 3489660929”. Also shows reason codes 12 and 0.  Also get this error in the same log: “An error occurred when transitioning from CsrConnected in response to EvCsrInitialized. (ErrorCode 0x80070102)”

  • In the RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS Operational log, we get lots of weird errors:

-TCP socket READ operation failed, error 10054”; “RDP_TCP: An error was encountered when transitioning from StateUnknown in response to Event_Disconnect (error code 0x80072746).”;

-RDP_SEC: An error was encountered when transitioning from FStateProcessingData in response to FEventPostReceiveFailed (error code 0x80072746).”

-RDP_SEC: An error was encountered when transitioning from FStatePassthrough in response to FEventCheckAndCompleteReadsFailed (error code 0x8007139F)”.

-Failed InputMgr->GetHandles' in CUMRDPConnection::GetInputHandles at 4043 err=[0x80070102]”; “'GetInputHandles Failed' in CUMRDPConnection::GetInputHandles at 1401 err=[0x80070102]”

Here’s what I’ve tried:

  • All servers are updated
  • Removed and recreated my collection
  • Rebooted many times
  • Restarted the Windows Audio service
  • Tried both from the RD Web Access page and directly connecting to the Broker server
  • Tried disabling firewalls on all RDS servers

I’m kind of at a loss and it’s driving me bananas. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Can we install the same RDS Licenses(Per-User) in two different RDS License servers?

We built two RDS servers in two different locations, How do we configure the High Availability for both servers.

We Purchased 50 Per-User licenses.

Server1- New York (Production)

Server2- New Jersey (DR)

Actually i tried to install the same licenses(Per-user) in both servers and it got installed also both servers are activated, but my concern is how can both servers are accepted the same licenses(same license agreement number)?

and i can see there are total 100 Licenses all together, anytime it stops accepting the user connections if we cross 50 User licenses? or any compliances?

Please let me know if we have any Load Balancing or High Availability setup exists.

2012 Remoteapp credential not accepting credentials when trying to access externally

Hi,

I'm new to RDWeb and have just inherited a 2012 setup which is working internally but have run into some problems trying to get it working externally.

We have 1 server running RD Gateway, RD Licensing, RD Connection Broker and 2 servers running the RD Session Host.

When run externally users are able to log into RD Web but when the try and run a Remoteapp it keeps requesting the user's credentials and will never accept them.

Has anyone experienced this issue before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers
