RDS on Hyper-V Server 2012

Hi - I have one Windows Server 2012 Standard and also Remote Desktop Services USER CAL's x4

What we want is for these 4x users to RDP into the Server and use applications like Office (plus a few inhouse apps)

What services and roles need installing? as i'm really struggling now and i'm getting rather stressed boo hoo

Currently i have a standalone Windows Server 2012 Standard, i have installed Hyper-V and created two VM's (Windows Server 2012 Standard)

Both have been added to the excising Windows 2003 SBS Domain

I have promoted one to a DC (SERVER-AD) the second i have have added

¦ Role-based or feature-based installation ¦ Select a Server ¦ Remote Desktop Services ¦ Remote Desktop -Gateway -Licensing - Web Access (as per a forum walk through)

I've configured the RD-Gateway with policies and licensing as per http://www.wackytechtips.com/installing-and-configuring-remote-desktop-services-rds-on-windows-server-2012/ as referenced above

But no matter what i have done hasn't worked! - i'm wondering if this post above is incomplete and there's more to this?

I have looked at adding ¦ Remote Desktop Services Installation ¦ Quick Start ¦ Session Based desktop deployment - think that is the bit i'm missing, i have years and years of server experience but this i have no experience of so i could be going completely wrong!

Anyhow on do the other i end up getting 'Online- Cannot get role and feature data'

Help - i seriously need some guidance on this

Thanks to anyone and everyone in advance :)

Session switches from Active to Disconnected as Remote User attempts to reconnect to Active Session with RemoteApp

$

This only appears to be an issue with Remote Users that are connecting to our RemoteApp from RDWeb Access via Internet Explorer 11:

User has a RemoteApp session open, then closes the app, which does in fact close on the Sesssion Host as I have confirmed via task manager.  The session remains Active (due to other processing running on Session Host under that user account?  but those processes do not appear to be related to the RemoteApp application (ex. Windows Logon Application, RDP Clipboard Monitor, etc.)) and when the user clicks on the RemoteApp icon on the Web Access page to re-connect to the RemoteApp, the app starts on the Sesison Host as I have confirmed via Task Manager, but suddenly the previously Active session "disconnects".

the result is the RemoteApp still running under that User Account, but the Session State for that User shows "Disconnected".  You can click all day long on the Web Access page, and instances of the RemoteApp may or may not startup, but the session never changes from Disconnected and the RemoteApp is never displayed on the Remote client.

This behavior only seems to be present in remote clients where IE 11 has been installed.

Deploying Managed Pool Breaks Adobe Reader 11

I am trying to set up managed pools for VDI in RDS.  I have RDS installed and functional on a Windows Server 2012 Datacenter machine, and I have successfully created Windows 7 template machines and deployed pools from them.  I have even managed to make changes to the pools with the recreate functions.  I have done most of this without finding great documentation.  That having been said, I am having an issue that I'm not sure how to deal with thatadequate documentation probably wouldn't help with.  I have installed Adobe Reader 11 on a virtual desktop template and created a pool from it.  When I connect to that pool and try to launch Adobe Reader, I get an error that says only: "An internal error occurred."  Adobe Reader does not launch.  I assumed this was a problem with the installation or something sysprep did, so I booted up the template and went through the OOBE.  Once booted, I could launch Adobe Reader with no problem.  IOW, this issue only exists when I deploy a managed pool, but not on the base image the managed pool was deployed from.  Note that I would prefer to keep everything on the VDI image and not mess with RDSH or App-V.  Does anyone have any suggestion on how to deal with this?

Where in Windows 2012 R2 do I find RDS client session information?

The Server Manager\Remote Desktop Services\Collections view gives me some information, but in Windows 2008 R2 and earlier I could also see the following per client:

1) IP Address

2) Host name

3) Screen resolution and depth

4) Client name (PC name)

5) Client build number

when right clicking on a name and selecting Status in Remote Desktop Services Manager.  Where do I find similar information in Windows Server 2012 R2?

RDWeb Connect to a remote PC - dual monitor

Over the same LAN, I can directly RDP to other workstations or servers and dual monitor works fine.  If I initiate the same connections through RDWeb, single screen only.

If I understand correctly, RDWeb is basically generating an RDP file that gets downloaded through the browser and opened using mstsc.exe.  Is there a way to customize this temporary RDP file to specify span or multimon?

Thanks!

How do I demote a domain controller that has Terminal Server on it and then add the server to a new domain?

Hi

I have a 2008 domain controller with Terminal Server on it that needs to be demoted and added to a new domain as a server with terminal server on it. I know how to demote a DC and I know how to add a server to a domain. I have read articles about moving Terminal Server but I am unsure of the best way to do this. Also what is the best order to do this and are there any "things" to watch for while making this transition?

Your help is apreciated

"Because of an error in data encryption, this session will end"

All of a sudden my Windows 7 x64 computer is unable to connect to random Windows 2008 R2 servers via Remote Desktop.

I can connect to the same servers from other Windows 7 machines.

The only fix I've come across so far is this, except that key doesn't exist on either my machine or on the server(s):

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService\Parameters
  3. Under this registry subkey, delete the following values:
    • Certificate
    • X509 Certificate
    • X509 Certificate ID
  4. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the server.

Does anyone have any suggestions please as I'm at a total loss what is happening here.

Thanks.

RDC printing not working

I'm connecting to a Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit TS remote desktop over the Internet using RDC on Windows 7 64bit. I can see all my redirected printers (e.g. "Canon LBP3010/LBP3018/LBP3050 (redirected 2)" and "Microsoft XPS Document Writer (redirected 2)") and print to them, without error (can't see anything in the error logs on client or server), however nothing prints.

Any ideas how I can troubleshoot or fix this?

PS: Redirected printing is working with Logmein (connected to a different machine) so there doesn't appear to be anything wrong client side.

RD Gateway Manager for Internet connections to Remote Apps

$

I'm trying to setup Remote Access to a Windows 2008 R2 server so that Internet clients can have secure access to run an app. in a remote session on the same machine.

If possible, I'd like Internet clients to only have access to remote apps, not desktops. I'd also like admins to only have access to remote desktops on the LAN not the WAN.

I've installed Remote Desktop Session Host, Licensing, Gateway and Web Access, all on the same server, and seem to have everything setup correctly. I'm able to connect clients over the Internet with RDC and Remote Web and run the App. The problem is that I don't know how to setup the security restrictions and don't understand why I can never see any connections to the Remote Desktop Gateway. It seems that the only thing which is controlling access is membership of the Remote Desktop Users.

Any help on how I can configure this correctly would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Simon

Unorthodox RDS Installation

I am attempting to recreate a “Terminal Server” type of environment in RDS 2012.  I had a Win2003 Terminal Server in my domain that users would connect to for one specific application central to the nature of my business.  As the app and the number of users have grown, I upgraded my domain to Windows 2012, and the 2003 TS continued to function just fine.  Users are directed to a specific .exe on the Terminal Server by a GPO covering their security group.
Wanting a richer desktop experience and faster graphics, I upgraded to a Win 2012 server with a nice GPU.  I installed Remote Desktop Session Host from the “Role-based or feature-based installation” option, along with License Diagnoser.  I then installed my app in “install mode,” with subsequent reversion to execute mode.  I did NOT use the “Remote Desktop Services Installation” option, and I did NOT install either the Connection Broker OR the Web Access component.  Going this route has led to NUMEROUS ERRORS, as one might expect.  These are examples:
Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed to redirect the user DOMAIN\xxxuser.
Error: NULL

Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed while getting redirection packet from Connection Broker.
User : DOMAIN\xxxuser
Error: Remote Desktop Connection Broker is not ready for RPC communication.

The Windows All-User Install Agent could not update timestamp for user user account DOMAIN\xxxuser. The error code is 0x8007054F.

The Windows All-User Install Agent could not to retrieve a list of packages for the user account DOMAIN\XXXUSER. The error code is 0×80070002.

Nevertheless, the app functions just perfectly.  The ONLY functional loss I have discovered is my apparent inability for a user with a default printer other than the default TCP-port network printer installed on the RDSH machine to redirect print jobs.  When they try, they get this error:

The document Print Document, owned by xxxUser, failed to print on printer Dell B1260dn Mono Laser Printer (redirected 2). Try to print the document again, or restart the print spooler.
Data type: NT EMF 1.008. Size of the spool file in bytes: 589824. Number of bytes printed: 0. Total number of pages in the document: 1. Number of pages printed: 0. Client computer: \\TS2012. Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 5. Access is denied.

The drivers on the RDSH server and the Windows 7 Pro workstation with the direct-USB attached B1260dn are identical.  The user is in security group with permissions on the appropriate folders in Windows/System32/spool.  The appropriate GPO settings have been made and tested with modeling.

Do not allow client printer redirection Disabled
Do not set default client printer to be default printer in a session Disabled
Redirect only the default client printer Disabled
Specify RD Session Host server fallback printer driver behavior Enabled
When attempting to find a suitable driver: Default to PCL if one is not found.

Policy Setting Comment
Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first Disabled

I have even tried giving that security group permission to restart the spooler service on the RDSH server.  No luck with any of this.

I realize that my approach is totally unorthodox, but I really do not need the overhead of Web Access, or the added security risks that come with an IIS installation in my domain.  I have tried installing the Connection Broker with RDSH role, but this leaves no one but the administrator able to connect.  Is there some supported (or unsupported) way to achieve my goal without IIS and the Web Access component?  Alternatively, were I to go with the recommended RDS install method, could I subsequently disable IIS and remove Web Access and still have the functionality I desire?

Folder Redirection Refresh Issue

$

Hi There,

I have a cluster of servers running 2008R2 and Citrix. GPOs are applied to effect folder redirection for desktop, docs, favorites, etc.

The issue is that when a folder or file is created on the desktop, you have to refresh the desktop in order to see the files.

It appears as though the issue was fixed in this KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2525332, but my version of shell32.dll is already newer than the version called out in this hotfix. I am running 6.1.7601.22015 in production -- a version that was updated due to a security patch for remote code execution in this KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2691442.

My hunch is that the security fix was "rapid release" or whatever and failed to include the code in the hotfix that came before it and fixed the desktop refresh issue. Can anyone point me toward a list of hotfixes that contain a newer shell32.dll so that I can start to figure out which versions introduce this bug and which versions fix it?

I've tried various values for NoRemoteChangeNotify registry keys and similar. Those options do not fix this problem.

Thanks,
Dave

Outlook 2010 in an RDS farm

$

Hi All

I am just getting my head around how my applications and more importantly Outlook 2010 will behave in my farm environment. I have 2 Host Sessions in a farm and have the same applications installed across both (Office 2010). I want Outlook to have the same configurations when users login between both host session servers.

I am using folder redirection for all the regular document folders in a users profile.

It looks like Word, Excel and Powerpoint all store application customizations in the AppData\Roaming folder. So I figure I can use roaming profiles to take care of that. Are most of you using roaming for the AppData folder? But Outlook stores all important customizations in AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\RoamCache which cant be roaming. So what are people doing to make sure the user has a consistent experience when in a farm environment?

Server 2012 timebomb registry bug

I am looking for any updates on the bug that is present in server 2012 that can only be resolved by deleting the timebomb key in the registry. Even tho the RDP license diagnoser presents no problems, every 120 days we must delete this key out of multiple servers so that users can log in again. This is pretty aggravating considering how many 2012 servers that we maintain. Any updates or resolutions are welcome.

Licensing - per Device or per User

Hello,

I know there are many threads about this topic, but I don't understand it. Thus I have to ask you and I hope that you can help me.

I have installed an Win2k8R2 RDS Server with eight per Device CALs. My Clients are Win7, WinXP, Win2k3 and Win2k8R2.

My requirements are that I have one account (e.g. Gast) which can connect to the RDS Server several times simultaneously. Further I want that only eight people can open a session simultaneously but overall there should be more than eight devices which can connect to the server. At the beginning it worked and I had eight simultaneous sessions. But now some clients cannot connect to the RDS Server anymore until I delete the registry key "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\MSLicensing\Store\LICENSExxx".

As far as I know the RDS Server allocates at first temporary licenses and for the second login it allocates permanent licenses. After allocating all my permanent licenses it only allocate temporary licenses. And probably this temporary license cannot be updated. Thus after a while it is impossible to connect to the server again?!? Is that the reason?

Now my actual questions:

- Is there a way to free licenses after closing a session? So I don't need 20 CALs for 20 devices although I only want eight simultaneous session with the same account.

- Is it possible to shorten the reservation time of the licenses? It seems to be about 3 months at the moment.

- Is it possible to logon simultaneously with User CALs?

I am not sure if I am using the wrong CALs or if I misdo while configuring the server or if its impossible to fulfill my requirements.

Thank you for your effort.

Regards

Felix

Hello,

I have connection broker on WS2012 R2 and use this for connection via Internet Explorer (RDWEB) to some domain computers from Internet.

Is possible connect via RDWEB to standalone/nondomain (Workgroup) computers when this computers is in the same IP subnet as domain computers ?

If yes, how configuration change on connection broker is necessary ?

Remote Desktop Gateway Common Practices and NLB Question

$

Greetings,

We're looking to implement Remote Desktop Gateway as a means of which to connect to our RDP-enabled corporate desktops in lieu of an aging firewall performing just this single task. Our interest in utilizing this for Terminal Servers or Remote Desktop Hosts isn't much at the moment and we're really just looking to put in RDG functionality.

The articles available are great, but just about each one assumes you're building infrastructure around RD Hosts and Terminal Services.

My question should hopefully be a simple one:

We want two RDG's load balanced between two sites. The NLB for these two RDG's within our perimeter network seems straightforward, but I'm a bit unsure as to if we need a Remote Desktop Connection Broker on the internal network to handle this, or if the connection broker is only needed for standard RDS/TS functionality.

Additionally, would it make sense to setup and use RD Web Access on the same two RDG boxes? Or does the standard functionality of the RDG work fine in this regard? If so, how does the RD Web Access work between two boxes when load balanced?

So would our eventual topology simply be two RDGs in our perimeter network, or two RDGs in the perimeter and a connection broker in the internal? After reading I'm inclined to believe the Connection Broker is needed if only to manage the two Remote Desktop Gateways in the perimeter.

Thanks in advance for your time.

RD Gateway - Client issue

$

I have RDS server setup with gateway and several applications.   I have a lot of users using the applications without issue.  I have 1 user that has a new Windows 7 laptop and since getting the new laptop can't connect to the applications.  I can use his credentials from several other computers without issue, it's his computer with the issue.

When he signs on he is prompted for the domain credentials,  keys them in and then gets the screen showing the applications.  when he clicks on the application instead of being prompted for the user id again, he gets a prompt of RDS Gateway and when he keys in his user it fails that it can't find the remote server.

He is the only user having this issue.

thanks,
