Very specific RDS deployment question

Good afternoon,
I have a complicated RDS 2016 setup. And it is almost one of those Microsoft questions you get on your exam.

Use case:
Internet users connect from the internet over a vpn to a vdi of company A. These vdi's run Windows 7.
From there it is possible to reach a RDS gateway in a separated network from company B, that is not connected to the internet. At this moment they cannot connect to this RDS deployment.

The deployment is as follow:
RDS Server 1: RDS host
RDS Server 2: RDS host
RDS Server 3: RDS Gateway/broker and web server
RDS Server 4: License server and profile store.

This RDS deployment in the network of company B uses a certificate signed by a CA of company A so that the vdis can trust the certificate. But this rds broker is from company B and his CA does not trust this certificate (Is that a problem?)

The network of the 2 companies are fully separated. They only share 1 thing and that is 1 subnet to connect to each other (directly without internet)

Users that try to connect from the vdis from company A get the following error when they try to connect to the RDS gateway of company B.

User Permissions on UPD missing

MSFT Team, One of my client company has 2200 terminal(RDS) users hosted on Windows 2012R2  and using Netapp for UPD storage. All of sudden nearly 1000+ users are getting temp profiles, after extensive troubleshooting found the users lost their access/permissions on their UPD hence logging as a temp. After giving the user with full access on their UPD wohaa..! no more temp profiles. We are in the lost of finding the root cause. Even after checking all logs couldn't move in the correct direction. Hence posting a query here.

Long delay to launch first published application in RDS environment

Good Day,

We have an RDS deployment with the RD Web Access and RD Gateway roles on a single server in the DMZ and two RDS Session Hosts on the internal LAN.

Once we sign into the RD Web Access portal and click a published application (Word for example) it takes on average 26 seconds to open. Subsequent applications within the same session opens immediately.

What can we check/tweak to reduce this initial logon time?

Remote Desktop v. Remote Desktop Connection - Multiple Monitors

So I only just realized that there is a difference between remote desktop and remote desktop connection.  TO me remote Desktop works infinitely better.

I have been asking my IT how to allow Remote Desktop to use multiple monitors since i have a dual monitor system at home on top of my laptop screen.

He showed me how to use set up multiple monitors on Remote Desktop Connection.  For some reason I can't login in my computer when using the RDC.   Only on RD

What I can't figure out is how to allow multiple monitors on the remote desktop app. Does anyone know how to activate that setting on RD.

Thank you

Printing Preferences and RDS Farm

Hi,

I have an RDS Farm which comprises of a Remote Desktop Connection Broker and 2 Session Hosts servers (VS01 and VS02).

The problem I have is with the printer, Ricoh IM C3000. This printer is installed on both session host servers.

You see, my users would like to be setup to use the hold print function in printer preferences and I can set this up fine. However as soon as my user gets assigned to the other session host server, these setting are no longer there.

So, if I set printer preferences on VS01, when the user is assigned to VS02 the settings are gone.

I then try setting the printing preference on VS02 and guess what, VS01 then reverted back to default settings.

I know I can setup the user to use redirect printing but would prefer not too just yet.

Any ideas when this is happening and how to fix it?

Kind regards

Port 3389 not listening

Windows Server 2003R2. Terminal Services is installed and started. Remote Desktop is Enabled. In the Terminal Services Manager session window, RDP-TCP is shown as being in a listening state. But when I run netstat -a, port 3389 does not show up. RD client cannot connect. Telnet or ssh to that port does not connect.

TCP is working fine: I can use logmein to view the server; I can VPN to the server, I can look at SMB shares once the VPN is up. No TCP filtering is active. The Windows Firewall is not active.

How can I get port 3389 going and be able to RDP in?

The registry is still showing port 3389 as the listening port.

I have removed and re-created the RDP-tcp port without any trouble and without success. The properties are set on defaults.

Remote Desktop devices in the device manager show as operating fine.

It used to work fine and just recently (sometime in January) it stopped working. As far as I know, no new software was installed at that time.

I have reviewed a bunch of stuff found in Google but none of it seems to help, so far.

Unable to retrieve the session collection properties

Hi,

we're facing the following issue while trying to add new Remote Desktop Session Hosts into
a session host collection  : "Unable to retrieve the session collection properties".

The server can be added into the deployment but can't be added into the session host collection and the message above
is returned. This error never happened before and is ennoying as we need to deploy more Servers/Collections.

A collegue noticed that adding a couple of servers at once (from the GUI) succeeded ...
I can't find anything related on EventViewer (Brokers / DataBase server)

Is this a known bug ? I can't find anything related on Microsoft support.microsoft.com
Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks.

Unable to shadow using mstsc unless run as admin elevated on RDS 2019

Running RDSH on Window Server 2019. I'm looking at allowing users to shadow other users but I've hit a bit of a problem. Cross-reference with this very old thread:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ie/en-US/b677a5a6-24de-4047-ab69-d2d9ae3baf64/shadow-only-for-administrators?forum=winserverTS

It mentions using mtstc /shadow:session /control. There is lots of discussion about permissions but I couldn't get it to work. But then I tried it using the domain admin account - which is able to shadow from Server Manager collections - and even it couldn't run the above command. You get this error:

However, if you run it from Powershell (Admin), i.e. elevated - then it works fine.

So this one isn't really about shadowing permissions as such but more having to run mstsc.exe as an administrator. Which is a bit of a showstopper as we are not about to give normal users admin rights on the RDS server.

Any ideas?

Hi All,

Hereby my question, If installed Remote Desktop Services lately on Windows Server 2008 R2 ofcourse.
Now everything works fine but I can't figure how to run mstsc.exe. Because for example I want to connect to another
server in the same network.

Every time I want to run : mstsc.exe its gives me the following popup :
"Your administrator has set policy that prevents hte launching of this RDP file. The remote connection cannot be started"

Can anyone explain how to disable that : "Policy" because I didnt setup any policy's yet.

I hope someone can explain it so I can use mstsc.exe again :)

How to disable users copy paste and file transfer via RD Gateway ?

Hi,

We are going to roll out RD Gateway Server (Running Windows Server 2008R2) so that End Users can access their own Desktop at office (So that they can work from home)

My manager would like to disable users to copy paste and File Transfer.

I have found the following thread

1) https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/lync/en-US/f07b2557-27fd-484f-9a62-635057959214/disable-file-transfercopy-paste-for-rds?forum=winserverTS

Just wonder how to set up in Group Policy ?  My manager says that we cannot control how the RDP Client Settings on their own machine.

2) I find another thread and it seems that we can do it in Remote Desktop resource authorization policies (RD RAP).

My manager also agree that senior staff and IT Staff are exempted.

May I ask which way is the prefered one ?

Thanks

Windows RDS Server 2019 looking for Windows 2016 Licensing Server

$

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.  Our DC is Windows Server 2019 and we have a member server Windows Server 2019 as our RDS Server.  I couldn't get the RDS server to see the DC running the RDS Licensing role, so I installed the RDS Licensing role on the RDS server, activated it and installed the 10 per user pack. It obvious can't see itself, but what is even more weird is that it's asking for a Windows 2016 Licensing server when it should be looking for a Windows Server 2019 Licensing server. What is really sad is that MS support isn't trained on Windows Server 2019 (BTW, a released product), so us as a MS Partner can't support our customers who embrace Windows Server 2019.  If anyone has any ideas, I'd be open to a conversation.

Disable TLS 1.0 on a FIPS enabled Windows 2012 R2 server

We are disabling TLS 1.0 per the standard recommendation via keys:

HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.0\Client

HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.0\Server

What are seeing is very odd.  On all systems that are not FIPS enabled, RDP (port 3389) is only accepting TLS 1.2 connections (this is per our Nessus scans).  On all systems thatare FIPS enabled, RDP is accepting TLS 1.0-1.2 connections.

The reg keys are the same.  Is this a known issue with FIPS + RDP + these protocols?  Can someone provide any documentation?

Thanks much

Blake

Allow users to connect to workstation from RDS HTML5 web client?

Hi Guys,

Wondering if there's anyway we can allow users to connect to a workstation from the new HTML 5 Web Client? From all my research and playing with the product, it seems only RD Session Hosts and Virtual Desktop hosts can be added to the portal. Seems like such a waste as we have this HTML 5 RDP client that would be perfect for our needs, except we can't publish extra RDP endpoints.

CAL RDS for users, without active directory

$

Hello,

First of all I'm new to the subject of server systems administration, so please don't be to harsh.

I have problem with CAL RDS licences. My configuration is without active directory and without a domain. I know that in this case I'm able to use only CAL RDS for devices. However I have a few of them for users. So I thought of the solutions described below:

My solution:

I will setup active directory and the domain without the intention of using it. Then I will setup RDS services with CAL RDS for user configuration, also I will create RDS users accounts. However none of the computers in the network will be connected to the domain. Also I have only one physical machine, so it will be running as domain controler, and licence server for RDS services.

By doing so I hope to achieve ability for users to connect to the server using RDS, and to avoid using active directory in the network (I'm to green for changing configuration of the entire network to make use of active directory).  But I don't know if this is possible - connecting to the server using RDS on the computer that isn't part of the domain.

Please help.

RemoteApp RDS2019 - splash screens stuck on client

$

Hi!

I am testing RDS 2019 with RemoteApp, and I have problems with startup splash screens. Each splash screen creates a button on the client’s taskbar and does not disappear from desktop and taskbar after the appearance of the main window. For example, I run three RemoteApp and I have three splash screens and three program windows on my desktop. And even if I close these windows, the splash screens will still remain on desktop and cannot be closed. This happens only in RemoteApp and does not occur with a remote desktop mode. I tried to recreate an RDS farm again, but it does not help.

This does not happen with all programs (having splash screen), but with many. At the same time, there were no such problems at RDS 2012R2/2016.

As RDCB and RDSH used Windows Server 2019 with latest cumulative update (2019-01). As clients used Windows 10 1709/1809 with same update.

Hi.

I'm connecting from my laptop by VPN located on remote router. I use OpenVPN application. Then I'm connecting by RDP client, using local IP, to Windows Server 2019.

1) I don't see my local printer, located on my laptop. The drivers to this printers are installed on server.

2) When I disconected from RDP server and login again, I'm login in new profile. I need to back to the profile I was disconected.

RDS - I need to change displays to a bigger monitor.

My father is working at home due to the current situation with the Global Pandemic.

I am attempting to help him change displays during a RDS while using the VPN Citrix.

He is having eye strain issues with the company funded laptop; thus I had attempted changing displays when I got the error:

The display settings can't be changed from a remote session.

If someone has a work around for this; that would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Details:

1. VPN: Citrix

2. Windows version: Windows 10 Pro

3. RDS: N/A ( I will find this out tomorrow)

RDS 2019. 120 licenses available, users being disconnected every 60 minutes

$

This is a follow up to an issue I have had for the last six months, ever since I deployed Windows Server 2019. Once a month around the same time users get this message:

“There is a problem with your remote desktop license and your session will be disconnected in 60 minutes. Contact your Administrator to fix this problem.”

A reboot of the affected session server fixes this, but this is unacceptable in our environment.

I have a Windows Server 2019 farm comprised of the following servers:

Sever1: Running the broker, gateway, web, and licensing server (has 120 Windows Server 2019 user CALs)

Server2: Session for Desktop collection

Server3: Session for Desktop collection

Server4: Session for Application collection

A GPO sets the license server to Server1 for the other servers.

The problem affects either Server2 or Server3, not at the same time.

The "RD License Diagnoser" tool shows all is well on the afflicted server when users are receiving this error. Per User licensing is shown as set here.

Sometime running the following in an Admin powershell fixes the problem:

Remove-Item HKLM:\Software\Microsoft\MSLicensing -Recurse -Force

regsvr32.exe /s mstscax.dll

However, this doesn't appear to be working this month.

Any help with debuging this issue would be greatly appreciated.
