RD Licensing server setup error - "unrecognized response"

$

Hi all,

I get the following error when trying to activate an RDS Licensing server.

The specifications...

  • Brand new Windows Server 2019 Standard VM
  • Domain joined
  • Server Activated with MAK key via telephone method as this environment is not allowed to get general internet.
  • Proxy configured to allow server access to https://clearinghouse.one.microsoft.com

The error...

I can't find any event logs that correspond to this error message popping up? The only thing I can think is wrong here is the proxy config and or I am missing additional URLs required for successful RDS licensing loading / activation tasks?

P.S> I am also correct in believing I can have many RDS licensing servers in many networks so long as I do not exceed my enterprise agreement RDS user CAL limit as assigned to my agreement?

E.G. when you activate an RDS License server it asks you how many CALS do you want to load into the server...

Thanks in advance...

durrie.

Upgrading RD Services to 2019

I am getting the following error when I try to upgrade an RD Virtualization Host from 2016 to 2019.  this is from the Scanresults.xml

Id="RdsUpgCheck.dll_RdsUpgradeComplianceCheck"><CompatibilityInfo BlockingType="Hard"/><Message Text="You have the Remote Desktop Virtualization Host (RDVH) role installed on this server. After you upgrade, you won’t be able to add the RemoteFX 3D video adapter to virtual machines."/><Action Name="Dismiss"

Google does not return much on this error.  I am doing it this way because it will not allow us to add a 2019 RD Virtualiztion Host to our deployment and I can find to useful errors in the event logs.

We are trying to upgrade our RD Services from 2012 R2  to 2019. Specifically we are migrating our of RD Virtualization hosts to new hardware on Windows 2019. We have already upgrade the RD Broker to 2019, the RD Web and Gateway are on 2016.

The upgrade procedure was falling so I loaded Windows 2016 on the RD Virtualization hosts and was able to successfully add the host to our current RD Broker. I then thought I would in-place-upgrade the RD Virtualization host to 2019 but if fails the checks with the error above.

RemoteApp repeatedly prompting for password

I'm trying to work remotely at the moment, for the first time. I can log into RemoteApp fine, but when I try and open any apps or my desktop I am repeatedly asked for my password, over and over again. What can I do to stop this glitch? I tried a diff browser, I reset internet explorer and rebooted my computer. I'm using Windows 10 Home at the moment, on a laptop that's only a few months old, which I keep regularly updated. Please help, I can't get hold of my work's IT guy!

Remote Desktop: Single point of entry for multiple workstations?

$

I have a lab of 30+ physical Windows 10 desktops and have made them available for my users to RD into.  I only allow one RDP connection per desktop.  I've managed to present a list of the computers that are not in use, and users can pick a name from the list to type into their RD connection settings.   Is there some way to create a single point of entry for these systems so that users can be connected to an open desktop automatically?

For example, if I have a Windows 2019 server with Remote Desktop Services, I would like my users to connect to this one server and have it automatically create the RDP session to one of those available desktops.  Is this something that Connection Broker can do?

Thanks.

Hello,

I have 3 standalone licensing servers in my environment, no RDS deployment.

All three of them are Windows 2016.

On all of them, the Remote Desktop Licensing service keeps crashing since 2 weeks or so.

Here is what i get in the Application log:

I did check with sfc /scannow and Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth on all the servers, no issues found.

Also checked with Infosec team regarding any policy update on the antivirus and file audit, no changes there.

No windows patches have been installed in that time period as well.

What else can i check?

Thanks in advance!

RemoteApps connect but wont launch after certificate renewal

*EDITED AS INITIAL INVESTIGATION WAS WRONG*

Windows Server 2016 standard - AD Environment - Clients are working from home

RemoteApps worked fine for a while; then we had to create a new certificate because it expired (used for RD connection Broker, RD Web Access, RD Gateway).

Certificate is installed on local machine, put into trusted root.

On some of my clients machines; the remoteapps will connect; but the app wont launch! (Then the client get disconnected after a few seconds.) They are machines were it worked great before the new certificate.

Here are some tests / investigation I did :

  • Not related to Windows edition (happened on a Win 7 pro, Win10 enterprise and some Win10 home)
  • Not related to AD profil the user uses to connect (Profiles work on a computer that doesnt have this problem; and every AD profiles will do the same on computer affected by the problem)
  • Does not seem to be network related (my own personnal PC has the same issue at my home; but my laptop works fine on my same network. NOTE : My laptop is not on their AD)
  • FOR ALL : the remoteapps says it connected to the Gateway; but the app won't launch. (I see the user poping-up on the server; then they get disconnected almost instantly.
  • FOR ALL : If I start their application before on a computer not affected by the problem; they CAN connected and see the app. Moreover; all additionnal apps will launch (from different rdp files)
  • FOR ALL : They were able to connect ONCE without problem; then the problem appeared.
  • I tried clearing the "cache" in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default. But the problem persist.
  • In one case (my personnal PC who had the problem); creating a new local Windows profile solved this issue. It didn't on 2 other PC I tried.

This has me racking my brain...

Thanks

(Sorry for original title who was wrong)

Redirected printers not showing in Devices and Printer - unable to change defaults

$

We have a Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Server and are having problems with redirected printers on it. The problem occurs for users running the RDP client from Windows 7, 8 and 10.

Users are connecting over a WAN connection and are needing to print to their local network printers. The printers are connected successfully to their local workstations, and the option to redirect printers is selected in the RDP client. When users remote connect to the server the local printers show as available from within an application, such as Word, and they can print successfully using them, however they don't show in the Devices and Printers in the remote desktop session.

The problem is they want to change the default settings on the printer to be single-sided B&W and the default is Auto-color, double-sided. This can be changed manually from within the application but it doesn't stick once they log off and back on again.

Following the recommendation from this link:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/243942  I was able to change the defaults by going to the redirected printer in Devices and Printers and making the change under both Printing Preferences and Printing Defaults on the printers, then waiting for at least a minute before logging off and the settings are persistent for that user through a logoff and back on again.

We had major printing issues with this server and printers when using the Windows Easy Print driver as they constantly randomly never printed jobs, and Microsoft Support concluded we needed to disable using Windows Easy Print drivers first and load matching drivers on both the local workstation and the server. This resolved the problems they had re the non-printing, but it meant changes to the default settings had to be made on the redirected printer as above, as changing them on the local printer doesn't carry through the redirection.

I was able to configure the redirected printers at the time as they showed up in the Devices and Printers, but for some reason they don't any more. The changed defaults have stayed persistent for users that the change was made on, but they now want it made for new users. Also checking for existing users they no longer have the redirected printers showing up in Devices and Printers either.

There have been no changes to the server that I am aware of that would cause the printers to no longer show up. Directly attached printers show up OK, just not the redirected printer. Checking the device manager does show the print queue for the redirected printer, and as mentioned earlier, it's available to print to.

I thought perhaps copying the registry configuration of a working configured printer and loading that each time a user logs on to the Remote Desktop Server might be an option, but the redirected printers change the redirection number each time so they wouldn't match.

Any thoughts or suggestions about how to either get the redirected printers showing up again, or configure them for persistent defaults would be greatly appreciated.

Terminal Server Licensing Service won't stay running

$

Good Afternoon:

I am having some difficulties with the Terminal Server Licensing Service in my environment.  The problem is that the service crashes every time it starts.  Sometimes it will run for a few minutes, sometimes a few seconds.

As I could not resolve this issue, I built a new server, activated it, installed my licensing and let it sit for a half hour.  The service never crashed.  I then pointed my RDS servers at this new server and things seemed to go well until a few hours ago.  The service began crashing on this new server, too!

The License Server is a fully patched Server 2008 R2 box service ~ 150 RDS hosts.  I can see that it's working while it's up -- lots of events in the Terminal Server Licensing Event log.  But it just crashes with the error below in the Application Log.

I cannot find much information on this error, but the one promising thing I found was to grant Network Service access to C:\programdata\microsoft\crypto\RSA\MachineKeys.  I did this, and restarted the service, and I'm still having problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

HELLO,

I AM CURRENTLY IN ISOLATION DUE TO COVID19 AFTER RETURNING FROM OS. I AM AT HOME, USING AN IMAC WITH A LOCAL CANON TR8560 AIRPRINT PRINTER. THE SERVER I AM CONNECTED TO AT MY OFFICE IS USING WINDOWS SERVER 2008. I AM UNABLE TO PRINT TO MY LOCAL PRINTER USING THIS CONNECTION. PREVIOUSLY THE OFFICE WAS USING A VMWARE HORIZON CLIENT TO ESTABLISH A VPN AND ALL PRINTER SERVICES WERE AVAILABLE AT THAT STAGE. WE HAVE MOVED TO USING MS REMOTE DESKTOP, AND UNFORTUNATELY THE PRINTER NO LONGER WORKS. ANY HELP WOULD BE MOST WELCOME.

CMN3101E

I'm a pensioner, living alone, and currently confined to my home as an NHS patient 'at risk' during this corona virus pandemic.

To make matters worse I'm profoundly deaf and can't use telephones. My computer is my main contact with the world.

I had thought myself able to cope until I tried to place an order for grocery deliveries! I  have been using this store for over 4 years without problem. The first order I placed after being put in isolation, I got the CMN3101E error at the last stage of paying with credit card. I have spent many hours checking with my bank and the grocery store but have not found the source nor solution to this problem. This week, the store agreed to take payment, manually, direct from my bank and the delivery was made. But they are also under pressure at this time of crisis, and I am in isolation for 12 weeks. I cannot expect special treatment all that time.  I have tried cleaning my browser history, did not seem to work. I'm unhappy that problems seem to coincide with Microsoft updates! can some one help???

Updating Expired Passwords on Wyse 3040 ThinOS 8.6_206

We have a number of Wyse 3040's running ThinOS 8.6_206.

The users of these devices are reporting that once their password has expired, they are then not able to update the password without resorting to calling the helpdesk for help.

Researching this I found a number of threads that suggested disabling NLA.
Is this my only option? If at all possible I would rather not disable security features to enable this.

I also noted some references to using RD WebAccess to redirect to the password reset website. Though my understanding of this is that it would only work whilst connecting from a full OS with a proper web browser. Am I understanding this correctly?

I will certainly be trying to manage this from the user side as well... But at the same time would like a technical fix if at all possible.

Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

RemoteAPP after windows 10 update 1803 are slow and right mouse button is not responding (it reacts only sometimes)

Hi,

our workstations with Windows 10 pro are in this weekend updated to version 1803. For main system we use RemoteAPP aplications on Windows server 2012R2 (Windows server 2012R2 is full updated). After update on client station are RemoteAPP slower, and  right mouse button is unresponsive, or react verly long time...

It is a big problem for us.

PS: after replace mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll from older version Windows 10 is all OK. but this is not a solution.

Thanks.

Lots of lag in RemoteApp when security layer is set to Negotiate or SSL, but not with RDP Security Layer

$

We have three (completely separate) terminal servers, all in one boxes with session host, gateway, everything (I know it's not as secure but that's how it is for now). We're publishing some programs using RemoteApp. Users of the apps experience a lot of lag with them, clicking and no response, then it'll catch up, etc. This applies to both 2012 R2 and 2016 term servers.

I've been troubleshooting for a while and finally figured out what seems to be the problem, but I'm not sure what the proper solution is.

In the session collection properties under Security, I discovered if I set the security layer to "RDP Security Layer", it completely resolve the lag issue. 100% fixed. If I set it back to Negotiate or SSL, the lag returns. I've tested it on all three of the terminal servers and it resolves the problem on all of them.

The problem with leaving it set to RDP Security Layer is 1) Not as secure of course, and 2) There is a very long login delay when opening a RemoteApp, as well as it seems the login isn't passed to the server, so the user during the connection has to click the "Show Details" dropdown which shows the actual desktop, login to the remote desktop, THEN the RemoteApp will open up.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to why SSL/TLS would be causing such a big delay. Bandwidth and server/client resources (CPU/RAM/etc) are not an issue here.

Printing doesn't work after disconnect

$

Hey all,

I've just deployed a RDP session host for a new customer running Server 2016, through an RD Gateway.  My end users are spread around several states, but all connecting to the same data center.  There are about ~200 users.  They are using RDP to connect to the server.

They are using thin clients that are set up to connect to local printers, and those work fine.  When the users connect to the RDGateway host and then their server beyond that, printing works fine, I can print test pages back to their printers and applications print flawlessly using the Remote Desktop Easy Print driver.

Then, if they experience even the briefest disconnect to the server, printing stops working.  Print jobs enter and disappear into print queues and never print.  No error message that I can find.

I have tried installing the proprietary drivers and forcing group policy to use those, and printing got worse - some couldn't print at all after that.  After returning back to using the RD Easy Print, we were at least back to just being unable to print after a disconnect.

The clients range from Windows 7 to Windows 10, but all seem to suffer the same problem.  I've tried searching for results on this issue but I'm not seeing any solutions.

Any ideas?  Anyone?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi There

Hoping you can help

RDS 2019 - Unable to connect when screen scaling enabled on Surface Book 2

$

I am in the process of standing up an RDS 2019 environment along side our RDS 2016 environment. 2016 environment was thrown together in a hurry a couple years ago and I figured this would be a good chance to stand a new one up done halfway properly. No issues on the old environment, what few published RemoteApps are there work ok.

However, on the 2019 environment I seem to have issues connecting with my Surface Book 2.

Scenario:

GW01 - RD Gateway
WEB01 - RD Web
CB01 - RD Broker
LS01 - RD Licensing
SH01 - RD Session Host running Wordpad RemoteApp to test

Client:
Surface Book 2
Windows 10 Enterprise
3000x2000 with 200% scaling
2 x 1920x1080 monitors connected via Surface Dock

This client connected to our RDS 2016 farm does not have any issues running a RemoteApp. If I attempt to run the test Wordpad on the 2019 setup I get the following message:

[Window Title]
RemoteApp Disconnected

[Content]
The configuration of the local display monitors was not accepted by the remote computer. For assistance, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator.

[OK] [Help]

Here are the scenarios I have tried:

On dock with external monitors with W10 scaling at 200%: Fails with error above

Off the dock with no external monitors but native resolution scaled to 200% - works

On the dock with native resolution scaled to 100% - works

The first scenario is going to be the most common use for me. This is really a niche issue at the moment since I am one of a few that are using a Surface device with a high resolution display. However we continue to roll out other Surface devices and laptop brands with high resolution screens so I could see this being more problematic down the line.

I haven't been able to find another reference to this error thru my Google searches so far. As long as scaling is the same across all monitors it appears to work ok but in this mixed scaling setup, the 2019 session host fights back where the 2016 session host appears to handle it with no issue.

User Profile Migration

Hi,

I want to move the server 2016 RDS users profile to Server 2019 server. Does anyone know a way to do it without any user interaction?

I have tried the xcopy command but when the user logs on the server assigns a temp profile.

xcopy c:\old c:\new /O /X /E /H /K

Thanks,
