Installing terminal server role on windows server 2012 to use for Windows server 2008 R2 machines.

Dear

Our current setup is as follows :-

Active Driectory is in Windows Server 2003.
Citrix Xenapp version 5.6 with all Xenapp servers in Windows Server 2003

Now we are upgrading our Citrix farm to 6.5 and all Xen app servers into Windows Server 2008R2.
We did the configuration and testing; everything works fine except the terminal server is not configured which gives the pop always for the expiry date.

We do have license for 2012 terminal server which is not possible to downgrade for some reason and managent need to install new Windows Server 2012 for terminal server and activte the licenses.

My question is :-
1 Whether Windows Server 2008 R2 will get RDS cal license from Windows Server 2012 terminal server (RDS CAL license is of windows server 2012).
2. What is the role and features I need to activate in Server 2012 in order to use for Citrix 6.5 (only applicable fetaure for getting the RDS cal license.)
3. Whether I can add this 2012 server into domain. Is it possible to add 2012 server into Windows Server 2003 AD.

Your early reply is highly appreciated.

SBS2011 RD Gateway Certificate Error

Hello All.  Thanks in advance for any input.

Brass Tacks - I need to know how to generate a new Self-Signed SSL Certificate.  The current one has the wrong URL name in the Subject.  ** I need to generate a new certificate with the CORRECT URL.

What the certificate currently has in the Subject: CN = Remote.ClientsDomain.com

Actual URL to get to the Remote Workspace:  Mail.ClientsDomain.com/Remote

Because of this discrepancy, I get the following error:   You can't connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway server address requested and the Certificate Subject Name do not match.

I can connect to the Remote Workspace website.  I can log into OWA.  The ONLY time this certificate seems to be required and gives me this error is when trying to use the Remote Workspace RDP.

I am hoping not to have to run Domain Name wizard or something else major in order to do this, as I fear creating a duplicate... something... somewhere... that wreaks havoc somehow.

Thanks

RD Gateway - Client issue

I have RDS server setup with gateway and several applications.   I have a lot of users using the applications without issue.  I have 1 user that has a new Windows 7 laptop and since getting the new laptop can't connect to the applications.  I can use his credentials from several other computers without issue, it's his computer with the issue.

When he signs on he is prompted for the domain credentials,  keys them in and then gets the screen showing the applications.  when he clicks on the application instead of being prompted for the user id again, he gets a prompt of RDS Gateway and when he keys in his user it fails that it can't find the remote server.

He is the only user having this issue.

thanks,

Unable to delete inactive user profiles on 2008 R2 RDS server

About a year ago, I went through the user profiles on our RDS server and deleted a whole bunch of user profiles from inactive accounts (users that no longer work here).  Since then I have made it part of the routine when inactivating the user accounts of terminated employees to remove their profile on the RDS server to keep it cleaned up.  Recently, I have been having problems doing that.  When I go into the User Profiles under Advanced Systems Properties, the Delete option is almost always grayed out on these accounts.  Until very recently, I could remove these profiles after a reboot of the server (which we do routinely once a week), but now that is not even working.

If I try to delete the folder under C:\Users, it always leaves behind the ntuser.dat file and a handful of others.  When I try to delete these files individually, I get the following error: "The action can't be completed because the file is open in System."

I don't understand why all of a sudden I am having this problem when as far as I know, nothing has changed on that server.  Why would the system have these files open on an inactive user account?  Is there anything I can do to force these files to be closed by the system so I can remove these profiles?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Certificates for load balanced Web Access hosts

$

We are going to set up and load balance 2 Web Access hosts (Server 2012 R2) for our RDS deployment. The load balancing will be handled by a Cisco ACE. In a single node Web Access deployment, it is straightforward how to request the certificate: Go through the standard IIS process with the FQDN and service name, install, export the client cert and you are ready to go.

How should I do this with the 2 nodes? Load balancing and ACE are both WAY outside of my wheelhouse. I was thinking I would request multi-domain certs for both servers with the FQDN of each along with the service name, but our network engineer recommended against that.

Can anyone offer me any basic guidance?

SSO Remotedesktop Apps over TMG and Remotedesktopgateway

Hi

Is it possible to enable SSO (Login only at TMG Auth-Form) in the following scenario:

External Client opens Webbrowser and authenticate at the TMG Auth-Form, after that he will be forwarded to the RDWEB Page. <-- SSO to this Point works

When he clicks a RemoteApp there should no Login prompt and the RemoteApp over Remote Desktop Gateway should start with the Credentials entered at the TMG Auth-Form.

How can i accomplish this Task?

Thanks

Running RDS on Server 2008r2 - connection drops suddenly and completely

We have about 50 RDS servers running on Windows 2008r2.  These are all virtual machines running within VMWare ESXi 5.5. Some are configured in a farm and others are "stand-alone".  All are in a single domain environment and we have no issues logging in and working.  BUT, at random times, users will "lose" their sessions.  Not the normal "session has disconnected, we will try to connect x number of times" that you see if there is a connectivity problem.  When the connection/session is "lost" the RDP client just closes immediately.  Clients PCs are running on a mix of XP and Windows 7.  Does not seem to be any rhyme or reason on which machines or users this happens to.  Have found nothing relative in the server or client logs.  It's not a keep-alive issue, you can be actively typing when this occurs.  Some times we can go for a day or two with no disconnects and sometimes some users will be disconnected 8-10 times a day.   This seems to happen at random - one user may be disconnected one time and everyone else is fine.  The next time it may be 10 sessions.  Haven't been able to tie it to a single farm, group of servers, group of users, time of day, or group of PCs.  Any ideas?

Thanks!

Switching between apps launched through RemoteApp from Windows 2008 R2 server

I have a problem with RemoteApp on Windows 2008 R2 Standard SP1.

When I try to switch between apps, launched from RD Web Access web-page, it is not always succeded. Instead of it the target app blinks and I still remain at the previous app. In another words, the next app window remains behind the previous app window and I have to minimize the previous app before switching to the next app.

Following the recommendations given by the TechNet Online Chat assistant, I've been installed all the available updates on that server from the Microsoft Update, but it didn't help us.

Is there any way to resolve this trouble?

Thank you.

2012 vdi connection broker question - can you weight it to certain hosts?

$

Hi

I'm having a play in my lab with 2012 R2 vdi and have to say i'm pleasantly surprised about neat it is!

I have two question about the load balancing part, and how many VMs I assign to hosts.

Lets say I have 50 users and 2 hosts. One host has more ram/faster disk that the other, so I want more load on host1 than on host2.

1) Do i just add 40 desktops to host1 manually and 10 to host2 via the add virtual desktops wizard or will the broker work it out itself?

2) What aspects does the broker take into account when balancing connections? does it look at cpu load etc on the host?

3) Will the broker just keep creating VMs as more users access it - or do i need the vms already created? e.g. my 50 users grows to 60 - do i need to create another 10vms on the hosts or will it automatically start creating number 51, 52 and if so presumably it balances them across the hosts somehow?

Hope that makes sense and thanks for any replies.

Restrict logins to RDS Web Access 2012

$

I would like to know if there was a way to restrict logins to remote desktop web interface to a certain security group on Server 2012

To clarify, this isn't referring to starting an application, but to the login page right when you visit the site.

I am aware of the following thread - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/66595988-753a-4cab-b5c4-4b9b3bcabbe8/restrict-logins-to-rds-web-access?forum=windowsserver2008r2rds which is helpful.

While planning to use this technique on a Windows 2012 RDS server I have found that the RDweb folder already has a permission for the group RDWebAccess.   I would rather modify an existing group but I cannot find this group in either the local computer or AD.

Any ideas?

[UDP] finding SID or username from attached disk on terminal server

$

I started as a system administrator at a company where i didn't set up the network and servers. This is the situation

There are two Terminal Servers with a broker. The VHDX files are on the fileserver. When an user logs in to the Terminal Server he or she should get its profile via de VHDX file. When he logs of the VHDX file should be dismount. The VHDX has a max of 1 gb.

Sometimes a user logs out but the VDHX stays attached. When the user logs back in he gets a temporary profile. Sometimes the VDHX shows its full but only 400 mb files are in it.

This is what i do:

- Log in as administrator on the Terminal Server and open diskmanagement
- Go to the security tab on the properties of disk one and check the users. -> if wrong repeat at disk two (50 users)
- If right, open PowerShell and find the SID of the user
- Log in to the fileserver and attach VHDX
- Copy files
- Dismount VHDX and delete it

- When the user logs in again he gets a new VHDX and i transfer the files to him.

You can understand that step two is taking forever. Is there a simpel thing to do to get the user/sid of every attached VHDX?

Cannot log onto network computer through RD Web Server Tab "Remote Desktop"

I have a problem when trying to access a remote connection through the RD Website. I can log onto RD Web and access the Applications both internally and externally. I can Remote desktop internally to all domain computers. The problems comes when trying to use the "connect to:" Field on the RD webpage.

I am running a single domain controller in a single domain.

I have already updated the DefaultTSGateway to have my FQDN.

The problem I am getting is the windows security windows which allows you to place username and password.

Once I provide the credentials its just loops over and over.

Its says it will use these credentials to log on to the TS Gateway and local computer. But it doesn't. How can I fix this?

Hi

I have purchased w2k8 r2 volume license for WinRmtDsktpSrvcsCAL and userCAL. When I download the license key from VLSC there is only w2k8 product key available for this server. After activate the server with this product key then I enabled the server's remote desktop service role and when i installed the role it says I have 120 days remaining to activate the remote desktop service. Now question is-

Why it says 120 days remaining ?
how i activate the remote desktop service?

where i will find the activation key for the remote desktop service ?

Thanks. <o:p></o:p>

Redirected Printer not picking up driver

$

Hi,

We have an issue with one of our photocopiers Sharp 2300 with Printer Redirection using Remote Desktop Services.

I install the x64 driver on my local machine (Windows 8 Pro) and x64 driver on the Remote Desktop Server - Using the same file, each time I login to the Remote Desktop server it redirects my printer fine.

The driver it is using "Remote Desktop Easy Print" - it should be picking up my Sharp 2300 Driver. I also downloaded the latest drivers and tried them still the same issue.

The only reason I am trying to get it to use the Sharp Driver is because when the user connects to Remote Desktop, the printer is redirected (using the Easy Print Driver) but when trying to adjust the properties to print in A3 it will always Print in A4.

The only way around this is to change the Local Computer properties to print on A3 and then log back on to Remote Desktop have the printer redirected and then you can print in A3. Then if you want to print in A4 you have to go through the same process again changing it to A4.

Hope someone has some suggestions I can try or point me in the right direction to troubleshoot this.

Thanks

Adam

Hi

I am looking for a advanced course in RDS 2012, but haven't really been able to locate anything.

I am not looking at the standard courses covering a wide range of Technologies, but more a Specific course targeting RDS 2012.

Optimally a Course would be 1 week and in the Europe Region. But any tips would be highly appreciated.
