Terminal Server Licensing (per device) in a dual boot situation: 1 or 2 licenses per PC?
Hello everyone,
in my scenario I have a few computers that are already Windows 7 clients to a Windows Server 2008 R2 but are now supposed to receive an additional Linux installation as a dual-boot option. The licensing mode on the terminal server is set to "per device" and they have each pulled a license in their windows installation as they're supposed to.
Now how will this be handled by the Terminal Server if I connect the first time via RDP from the Linux OS?
We also have 2 Linux Thin Clients who pull a licence just as the Windows PCs do but they only run linux, so its works just fine. I don't want those dual-boot computers to use up 2 licenses. How is the "per device" policy enforced? Does the server check the computer name for that i.e. would I be able to solve the problem by making sure both OSs use the same computer name?
Thank you a lot for your assistance
No template for a virtual Desktop
Hi there,
hope you can help me with my problem concerning Microsoft VDI deployment. Before I start: I already checked some guides, including http://blog.itvce.com/?p=1569
So my problem occurs at the VDI deployment step where one has to chose the virtual desktop template. The wizard doesn't show any entry at this step.
I went through some guides including the one above. Already reinstalled everything. Doesn't change the fact, that i can't go further than the step i mentioned.
The infrastructure is based on Windows Server 2012 R2 and all VMs are based on Generation 2 machines - Clients are Windows 8.1. Are those not supported? That's the only thing i currently can think of which may be the obstacle.
Thanks in advance
Unsolicited Remote Assistance (msra.exe /offera) windows 7 to windows 7
Hello,
I have used group policy to enable Unsolicited Remote Assistance to Domain Computers:
... & set Windows Firewall to allow Remote Assistance:
Logged on to a domain computer, in lusrmgr.msc I can see that the appropriate groups are added to the Offer Remote Assistance group and can telnet "computer name" 135 to that domain computer - group policy as been applied correctly. All PC's are fully up to date with Windows Update.
When I initiate msra.exe /offera to the domain computer I have confirmed *should* work I get:
(There was a problem interacting with COM object 833E4010-AFF7-4AC3-AAC2-9F24C1457BCE. An outdated version might be installed, or the component might not be installed at all.)
This is in eventvwr.msc of the computer initiating the Remote Assistance session.
How can I resolve this?
Thanks
Any way to increase RemoteFX Video Memory?
Fairly direct question here, is there a way to manually increase the video memory allocated to a VM? We are running some applications that require more than the 320mb it seems to be allocating, is there a registry key or some way for us to control this manually?
We are using a C410X with 16x nVidia Tesla cards. We have a metric ton of horsepower, but no way to allocate it properly.
error can't find name in adress list
I am using outlook 2007. It works fine on my xp computer. I bought a new one with windows 8.1 and am using outlook 2007 for email . I use comcastbiz and connect thru Microsoft exchange.
My wifes e-mail profile works just fine ,but it won't find mine. Comcast say call Microsoft, Microsoft says pay and we'll fix. computer tech came to my home and charged me $200 to tell me he can't figure it out.
I need my scheduler to run my business.
any ideas?
RDP via remote web workspace from Server 2012 R2 Essentials on Win 8 Client unable to connect to local printer.
Hi,
Having an issue redirecting to a local printer when using a remote desktop session initiated through from a Essentials 2012 R2 server via remote web workspace on a Win 8.1 client, it doesn't pick up the Local printer, or even give the option of which local resources to use on connection, just goes straight through and displays the remote desktop on connection.
I know its not a server global policy issue as it works fine on a Win 7 client with the same user being able to print locally whilst in a RD session
Any idea's as to how I can resolve this issue and enable local redirected printing or at least give me the options of specifiying which resources to connect on the local machine at the start of a session.
It's complicated I think as the essentials box is acting as the gateway so I cannot setup a session directly, the certificates are all working correctly so I am confused as to whats causing the issue.
Any help would be appreciated.
Expired Password Users can´t login into an RDP Connection
Hi,
we have some remote users that use .rdp files to connect directly to some remote applications. They don´t use RD WebApp.
When their password are expired, they can´t logon.
Is it possible to enable them to have the question asking then to change their password?
Thankyou in advance.

Doesn't microsoft violate MY licensing agreement by NOT allowing me to use remote desktop with one user and one program?
Hi all,
I would like to use remote desktop for windows 7 from my iphone using the ms remote desktop client without the desktop logging off and turning off the application I have running on my external monitor! The application is a presentation program that
needs the extended monitor. When I remote in, microsoft locks my laptop and closes the external monitor thus preventing me from using one program with one user. So in a very real sense microsoft is in violation on my licensing agreement.
I've searched work-arounds to no avail. I don't want to have 2 concurrent users. I just want one user using one program from two different monitors in this case an iphone. What is so illegal about this?
two ip addresses
Is it possible or does it make sense to use two separate interfaces both in the same subnet to on a single RDS host session server? ONe interface would be for all RDS traffic and the second interface would be for all the local data applicatoin traffic?
SO like one interface 192.168.0.2
Other 192.168.0.3
RemoteApp in DMZ
Scenario is TS Gateway in a dmz.com domain and RemoteApp server in internal.com both servers joined to respective domians. TS Gateway is exposed to internet. How to I configure this scenario so I can get to the RemoteApps internally ? There is a one-way domain trust from external to internal, so the external domain trusts the internal domain. However I cannot get the RemoteApp internal as a source. Setup was followed by section 3.2 http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2009/07/31/rd-gateway-deployment-in-a-perimeter-network-firewall-rules.aspx
See below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
3.2. RD Gateway with forest trust model deployment:
In this deployment, there is AD DS in the perimeter network which trusts the internal network forest to authenticate the internal network forest users in the perimeter forest domain. RD Gateway is joined to the perimeter network domain. The trust between the perimeter network forest and the internal network forest is one-way, so configuring RD Gateway to use a central NPS server which is in the internal network is required in this deployment.
The following diagram shows the traffic flow from the Internet to the perimeter network and from the perimeter network to the internal network in this deployment.
RD Cal Expiration
I'm looking to add RDS to an environment.
Multiple users use one thin client to access RDS, so I believe I would need a device cal vs. user cal. Is that correct?
Also, I keep seeing they expire in 60 days, that doesn't seem right... Is that only if not being used? If they are in use how long are they good for?
Last question, why does Microsoft make things so difficult? (This one is redundant, no need to answer!!)
RDP licensing question
We currently have a three 2008 R2 RDP servers that are getting their RDP User CALs from our 2008 R2 RDP license server. However, when we renewed our Enterprise Agreement we changed our RDP licenses to Device CALs and we also have deployed four new 2012 R2 RDP servers that will eventually replace the 2008 R2 RDP servers in the next several months. I want to activate the Device CALs and use them for all of our 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 RDP servers. Could I activate the 2012 R2 Device CALs and then point all of our 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 RDP servers to the 2012 R2 license server and then decommission the 2008 R2 User CAL server? Thank you for any answers you can provide.

GPO screen lock out policy
We have a GPO that locks the user's workstation screen after 15 minutes and requires a password to unlock. When users connect to an .rdp program on a 2008 r2 terminal server, their local workstation locks as it should but when they unlock their local workstation the terminal server is requesting a second logon to unlock their rdp session. Is there a way to disable this second logon requested by the rdp server?
Thanks.

Session on Terminal Server freezing
Hi,
We have 64 bit Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Service Pack 1. When connecting to it locally (through public IP) there are no issues. When connecting to it from a different city users experience freezes, screen locks up and cannot do anything. This happens every other day at different times while doing different things. What helps is resetting their session on the server.
Can you advice on how to troubleshoot this issue?
Thank you.
Hiding an user from local group and users?
hello MS forums, lately i've seen some servers where people simply hide their user from local group and users
example:
take a look here
as you can see there is an "admin"
and they simply take the admin user from there.
how they do this?
i want to learn it too.
Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?
Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?
This is an MMC snap-in found on earlier servers, even if RDS is not installed. In Server 2012, even if the Remote Desktop Session Host role is installed, this tool is still not available.
I'm looking for the Server 2012 tool to adjust security settings like TLS authentication, High encryption level, choice of TLS certificate, NLA, etc.
Thanks!
Got RDWeb and TS Gateway working on a single server with a single public ip and self-signed cert
I got a lot of good pointers poking around these forms, but most of the stuff I saw seemed to indicate this setup was not really possible, so I thought I would share what I had to do to get things working in case anyone else was curious. (Server 2008 R2)
I used a self signed cert for the ts gateway issued to the public ip address rather than fqdn. This cert has to be imported into the users trusted root store. In the remote app manager, I set the rd gateway setting to use the public ip address as well. Everything else was left still using the internal fqdn for the server. Next, on my router I set up two port forwarding rules. external port 8080 to port 443 on the internal system AND external 443 to 443 on the internal system.
Users can successfully connect from the internet to https://<my ip>:8080/rdweb without any certificate issues. When they launch a app, they will see a certificate warning about a cert issued to my internal fqdn being untrusted, oking through that allows them to launch apps successfully.
Hope that helps anyone else who wants to do really small scale deployments without buying certs or domains.
Terminalserver 2008 R2 random disconnects
Hi guys
I found alot stuff over disconnect errors on W2k8 R2 but nothing exact like my issue. First the environment:
Terminalserver: W2k8 R2 running on vSphere 5.1 U1. Single TS with about 25 users.
Clients: HP ThinClients, some with ThinPro, Smart Zero, Windows 7E, all clients have the same issues
Now to the issue: RDP connection to the server works always. But during work clients will face random disconnects from the server. The connection is reestablished within a second or two. But it is happening ranging from every 30 minutes to every 2 minutes which makes it really hard for users to work.
I have no errors in the event log. The only hints i have are the logon events telling me that a client disconnected and after a few second the event, that the client connected. (Event-ID 23, source: TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager)
Another thing is, that when I am using our VPN to the customer and connect via RDP to the same terminal server the issue never happens. It only happens to the ThinClients.
I really have no idea what else to look for and would appreciate any hints.
Thanks alot and best regards!

What I have in place?
1x Broker
1x WebAccess
1x Gateway (also license server)
1x SessionHost
1x Wildcard Certificate
my internal domain is mydomain.local and external is mydomain.com
I have tried ( http://msfreaks.wordpress.com/2013/12/23/windows-2012-r2-remote-desktop-services-part-2/) without success.
Any guidence here will be very helpfull.
