The connection is not using advanced RemoteFX RemoteApp graphics

$

Hey

I have some HP WS460G8 + Nvidia Grid K1 GPU + Windows 2012 R2 (fully patched)

We would like to use the servers with RDS + RemoteFX.

When a user logs on to the server we get: "The connection is not using advanced RemoteFX RemoteApp graphics" in the eventlog.

Client running Windows 8.1.

Any ideas?

Michael

RDS not allowing cached credentials

I have a RDS 2012 r2 server that launches another RDP that automatically connects the user to their work desktop. We published it out to the web access and it all works well.

However many of our users would like to use their phone or mobile device to connect to their work computer. Microsoft published an app called Microsoft Remote Desktop which allows users to do that very thing. However the one big security risk is the fact that app stores the users username and password. So if a user leaves there iPad or phone somewhere anybody could pick it up and remote into that persons work computer without being prompted for a password. We need a solution that forces the client to be prompted for credentials even if they are cached.

I applied the group policy setting "always prompt for credentials" on the RDS server and this doesn't allow anybody on a desktop using the web access page to cache their credentials but it does not affect the app.

Is there anyway we could change something on either the RDS or RD gateway to always prompt for credentials even on the mobile app?

RemoteApp with host connected to VPN

$

Hi,

I have a question regarding RemoteApp vs regular Remote Desktop Connection spiced with a VPN connection initiated from the host.

We're in the process of moving from PCs to thin clients and we have set up an RDS farm (all servers are Windows Server 2012 R2, they are all in the same domain and same LAN) as follows:

1 x RD Connection Broker + RD Licensing + RD Web Access

3 x RD Session Host

The users/clients will connect with regular remote desktop connection software (no Citrix or anything). Two of the RD SHs will be providing the users access to their normal applications, but some users also need to use remote resources which are only available via VPN connection, hence the third RD SH. (Currently it is solved by every user having a virtual machine on their PCs and connecting to the VPN from there.) We can't put the VPN connection to the two "regular" RD SHs, because we'll need more VPN connections later. The idea was to install and set up the VPN on the third host and publish the needed apps by RemoteApp to the users who use it.

The problem:

Once the host connects to the VPN the users are unable to launch the RemoteApp applications. If it's not connected then they can start them. The VPN client is a Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client that can only connect if the connection is initiated by a local user and no other user is currenty logged on (it's a remote side policy we can't change). If the users connect to the RD host with a regular remote desktop connection after the VPN is set up then it works as expected, they can launch the apps and work with them.

The question:

What is the difference between launching a RemoteApp and connecting to the RD host via RDP? How can I debug this RemoteApp connection problem?

Please ask if something is not clear!

Thank you!

PS: If I'm not heading into the right direction and someone has a better idea, I'd be grateful to hear (read) it!

Playing Video smoothly (youtube or mp4 file) through RemoteApp or RDP into Win 7 from 2012

We're setting up a 2012 R2 RDS, and sending the RemoteApps into Windows 7, both Enterprise and ThinPC. Video playing is a problem - both youtube, and playing video files.

WMP will play fine in a full RDP session, but it becomes very glitchy when piped through a Remote App into Win 7 Thin PC or Enterprise. Youtube or Vimeo are very glitchy both in full RDP session and in IE Remote App.

What options have I got to get this working?

Both the Win 7 Thin PC and the Win 7 Ent clients are running the latest version of the RDP client (6.3.9600), supporting protocol 8.1.

The 2012 R2 hosts are fully up to date.   In IE, the Adobe reports the Flash version as 12.0.0.77, same in Chrome.  No surprise there, just one thing I was checking in the context of youtube being so glitchy and jumpy.

This termsvc team blog post talks about seamless multimedia experience on Win 8 & 2012 - but I don't think that it applies in our case since we are using Win 7 clients.

I'm new to terminal services, but from reading up about RemoteFX, it seems like there was a period during which RemoteFX had to be enabled by Group Policy, but that seems to no longer apply to my situation (where the clients support RDP protocol 8.1).  Is that correct, or are there some policies I should be enabling on my 2012 R2 hosts to enable the best multimedia experience for clients using RDP protocol 8.1 in Win 7?

RDSH Licensing Issue

Hello,

I have just rolled out two (2) Win2012 RDSH servers and installed the licensing role on a third server (a 2012 DC).  I added all three servers to the server pool.  There will be no session balancing between the two servers.  Given that, my plan was to create two session collections with one server in each.  When I run the session collection wizard and add the server, I get the attached error:

When I check the eventlogs, I can only find Verbose level entries saying the server was successfully added to the collection (TerminalServices-SessionBroker eventlog), event id's 776 and 787.  In the above example I'm creating a collection for GW-TS6 while ON GW-TS6.

The overall problem is that when I do this for both TS's and define a license server for each (making sure the licensing mode matches the license server) each server reports that it's within the grace period - it's not using the installed licenses.

The license server shows green:

The RDSH servers are configured in Per User mode as well.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Remote Desktop Services load testing in Windows Server 2008 R2

We just got a Windows Server 2008 R2 with RDS, a sample application for RemoteApp test and one configured domain user, all default settings everywhere.

We want (because we're asked so) to make some kind of load test with 80+ connections, but can count only on one Windows 7 x64 client PC (which has that domain user logged in).

Is there a way to achieve this with the provided environment? Or how can I measure server performance in a multiple connections scenario. Unfortunately, we cannot just connect 80 individual computers (or VMs) to achieve this.

Thank you in advance.

The 28th person getting below error message. I also checked system resources (ram , page file, cpu utilization) all are normal. If 2 or 3 people do log off, the person who is facing below error message he can able to log on that server.

error-

Frequent Disconnects going through NLB RD Gateway Farm

$

About 2 weeks ago we started experiencing frequent brief disconnects when accessing our environment through our RD GW farm.  If we connect over a VPN to the host server we do not experience the disconnects.

The farm is 2 servers using NLB running the RDGW, RDWeb, and RD Connection Broker roles (in High Availability Mode with a separate SQL server running a database).  All servers are 2012R2.  Everything was working fine for about 3-4 months.

Looking through the logs I have only found these warnings, but have not been able to find information on them to see if they are the cause of the disconnects:

RDP_TCP: An error was encountered when transitioning from StatePreparingX224CC in response to Event_ERROR_SendingX224CC (error code 0x0).

I am at a loss of where to look next.  Nothing has changed in the environment from when it was working without the frequent disconnects.  The only thing that has changed is the addition of a couple of Session Collections, but I do not see how that would affect previously working Session Collections.

RD session hosts cluster redirect problem

Hello!

I have four servers in two local networks.

One LAN is userspace with two ADs running:

1. Windows 2012 R2 Std: AD, DNS, DHCP, Connection Broker, Web-access

2. Windows 2012 R2 Std: AD, DNS, DHCP

Another LAN:

There is a cluster of two servers Windows 2012 R2 Std. Servers role is a collection of terminal session hosts. The reason for clustering is to have a shared storage volume to store user profile virtual disks. Each server has 4 physical ethernet interfaces:

[1]. Default route. RDS. Cluster communication.

[2]. Cluster communication.

[3] and [4]. SAN

RDS server names are TERM0 and TERM1. They both are known to AD and DNS by IP-addresses of interfaces [1].

The problem is server TERM0 redirecting the client to interface [3] of TERM1 while load balancing in participation with Connection Broker on connect. Client is redirected to the SAN interface [3] and, of course, failed to connect.

Is it possible to specify which IPs or interfaces can be used for RDS and which are not?

How to recognize if application is installed using "Install Application on Remote Desktop" option on Windows Server 2008 R2

How to recognize if application is installed using "Install application on remote desktop..." option in Control Panel in Windows Server 2008 R2?

Basically, as administrator, I can't say if the user installed application using "Install application on remote desktop..." in Control Panel or he just installed it by clicking the .msi executable. I can't find anything that makes any difference. I could not find anything in the registry. I am quite confused.

Thanks,

False positive Event ID 1128

Two of my Windows Server 2012 R2 servers with Remote Desktop Services installed has started spamming me with false Event ID 1128 ("The RD Licensing grace period has expired and the service has not registered with a license server with installed licenses."). The servers ARE set up with a licensing server with 9999 Pr. Device CALs, and the Licensing Diagnistics says everything is fine. Users are also logging on with no issues. What causes the server to report that it has no license server, when it does? I've set up licensing server trough Server Manager, GPO AND Registry.

Licensing Diagnosis reports No installed licenses (Server 2008 R2)

$

There's an RDS server that has been in production for more than a year, the licensing server is on the same machine.  It's functional at this time (new clients can remote in and receive licenses, and reports of this activity can be pulled from the RD Licensing Manager.

However, neither the licensing diagnosis nor the licensing manager (or any other RDS related tool or snap-in) shows any installed licenses.

Licensing manager has an entry for "Windows 2000 Server - Built-in TS Per Device CALs" (all servers are 2008r2, not sure why the mention of server 2000)

At the bottom of the Licensing diagnosis it reports the correct details of the licensing server:
Credentials: Available
Connectivity: Available

Version: Windows Server 2008 R2
"Prevent License upgrade": Not Enabled
"Licensing server security group": Not enabled
Per User Tracking and reporting: Available

But under "The license server has the following licenses installed and available", it reports:

"No licenses are installed on this license server"

Licenses HAVE been installed in the past, and in fact the server is behaving as if they're installed now (properly issuing licenses to clients), but everything I look at here says otherwise.  My biggest concern with this that we'll need to pull a certain amount of those licenses off onto another server in the next few weeks, and i'm hesitant to do so when it's in this inconsistent state.

What are my options for troubleshooting/resolving this sort of an issue?  Also, what of those can I perform without interrupting service?

connection broker and RemoteApp manager role on the same server OK?

Hello. I may have what seems to be a strange request here. I have a currently working 3 node TS farm consisting of 2 Terminal Servers with the RemoteApp role on them and 1 server running the connection broker. All is running fine but the RemoteApps I have published are prohibited to have the clipboard enabled for them due to PCI DSS compliance. I wanted to install some other apps and have the clipboard enabled but since it seems that the clipboard is a server setting and not a per app setting, I was hoping to just install these apps right on the server running the connection broker vs building a separate new TS server to host them. These other apps do not need to be in the load balanced environment.

Can I just install the RemoteApp role on the CB server without any interruption to the farm?

Thanks,

Joe

Troubleshooting Remote Desktop Services Connectivity - Windows Server 2012 R2

$

I have a number of users who connect to Published Applications over the internet. (Workers work from home). On any given day, user A can stay connected to the remote app with no disconnections for 8 hours, no problem. On the same day, user B may be disconnected 10-15 times during the exact same time period.

This is oversimplifying a good deal - there are many users who are fine, and many users with disconnections at different times of the day. (If everyone got disconnected at the same time, I could wrap my head around the idea of it being an issue on the server/our network).

My question is: how does one go about troubleshooting this? Their computers are all company provided. However, users are responsible for their own router/firewall/internet providers. They of course will call their internet provider, who will in turn "test their connection", and they'll be told that their connection is fine.

I need to be able to show WHAT is happening (both to the user and to myself), so that I can then troubleshoot further.

I've toyed with the idea of running Network Monitor/Wireshark, but honestly, I'm not real sure WHAT I'm looking for.

Anyone have any troubleshooting tips/tricks to share?

RDS Cluster Issue

OK guys, hope someone can help me out here..

I've inherited a RDS cluster of 5 RDS (SFG-TS-05 .. 09) and one Connection Broker (SFG-FARM) servers and there's some really strange things going on that I can't seem to sort out.

For starters

  • All the servers are added to the 'TS Web Access Computer' group
  • The connection Broker has all the servers added into the 'RD Web Access Servers' in RD Connection Manager
  • All the same Apps are installed on each of the RDS servers
  • All the RDS servers have the Apps set to access them through RD Web Access.
  • All the RDS serves have RD Session host set to rds-ts-farm.company.com.au
  • The Broker and RDS servers all have the same GoDaddy certificate installed and configured for the Digital Security
  • There is no RD Gateway as no remote access is needed.

So from all this I gather the session broker simply send users to whichever RDS server has the most resources free (basically laod balancing) and when you RDP into 'rds-ts-farm.company.com.au' it sends you to one of the RDS servers.

This seems to be working fine as there always someone logged into all 5 RDS servers, and I've been told that noone logs into a RDS server directly, they all use the farm address.

ISSUES

No they wanted me to look into the RemoteApp's side of things and setup their windows 7/8 PC's with RemoteApp and Desktop Connections.

If log into the website of servers 5-7 the apps all show up in the programs list and there is no certificate error in IE (It's showing the correct certificate as per setup) when I go to the 'configuration' page. They are setup with the 'An RD Connection Broker Server' and but in the RDS-FARM.company.com.au.

Except server 8&9 they fail all using rds-farm in the connection broker section or rds-ts-5-7 in the sources option. The error is

"RD Web Access was not able to access the RD Connection Broker server specified. Ensure that the computer account of the RD Web Access server is a member of the TS Web Access Computers security group on the RD Connection Broker server."

These 2 servers also have a certificate error when in IE and the certificate is pointing to a local computer certificate not the godaddy one (event though the config says to use the godaddy cert)

I just dont know what to do, I've done what the error asks and they're configured that same, albeite 3mths after the original 3 and connection broker were configured.

Lastly, I've configured a machines RemoteApp and Desktop Connections pointing to rds-ts-farm.company.com.au and it works and shows me the apps and they load up.. but when I try to refresh it 2-3/5 times I try it errors

"The remote computer cannot be authenticated due to problems with its security certificate.
Security certificate problems might indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the remote computer."

So could the RDS 8&9 servers issues be anythign to do with the certificates? As it seems to be a common issue with the setup?

Thanks agian

How to find TS licensing server in domain

$

Hello Guys,

Do you have a way to extract all TS licensing servers in the domain, particularly win2008/R2. Any powershell cmdlets/scripts or anything i can pull out from AD.

Domain is on win2003.

I don't want to use get-adcomputer and then use WMI to query each computer to get desired result, because we have 10,000+ computers with different suffixes which sometime doesn't resolve and some we don't have access.

I am looking if TSlicensing server populate any attribute in AD which I can query?

BTW which WMI class is used to query TS licensing server, if no other options left?

Does Group "Terminal server license servers" group can provide accurate information?

Regards..

RemoteFX configured and running - but still very slow

Hello!

The goal:

To install and test RemoteFX performance before purchase expensive server/vga.

The success so far:

  • installed and configured Windows 2008 R2 SP1 with Hyper-V
  • installed and configured Windows 7 Enterprice SP1 virtual machine with RemoteFX video adapter enabled
  • running Windows 7 SP1 client with the supported version (7.1) RDP
  • successful RDP connection and confirmed RemoteFX running (the shut down button + event with ID:2 on the VM and so on)
  • no errors/warnings in the event viewer, RDP client is 10mbit or more etc.. all settings seems to be perfect.

The hardware used (I know it's not a real server, but the idea is to "feel" the RemoteFX performance before purchase and for a single VM it's quite enough):

  • AMD 6800k (SLAT enabled) cpu
  • nVidia GTX560 1G GDDR5 (also tested with ATI R7 240 2G)
  • 8g DDR3 2400mhz memory

The problem:

The performance is.. let say the same as with the normal RDP connection. Pretty much no difference.

I checked almost every problem on the internet related to the RemoteFX, but without a single log/message I just can't do more.

The VGA is not Quadro/FirePro.. but from what I saw, the people are just using normal cards without any problems and for test purposes should be fine.

I also tried to install the cap driver (dism / ...), without any difference (actually I'm not 100% sure that this is needed, can someone explain?).

I'll be happy if someone can point me the way I can "debug" it.

Best!

Windows Server 2012R2 RDS sound and smartcard redirection issues

$

We are using RDS collection with two Windows Server 2012R2 session hosts. Both hosts are virtual servers (clean installation) and are used as session hosts (terminals) with 10 to 25 users each.  RDS Connection Broker is also virtual machine with Windows Server 2012 R2. Our users are using Windows 7 Embedded thin clients with MSTSC RDP 8.0.

Our terminals are running correctly after fresh boot, but in 12 to 48 hours after boot we encounter problem with sound and smardcards redirection in RDP. Remote sound stops working and users cannot login with their smardcards.

Relogging users doesnt help, deleting profiles doesnt help, restarting sound service doesnt help, only viable way to solve issue is server restart. There is not any event in event log about this issue.
