Using Office 2013 with RDSH and Pooled VDI

$

Hey Everyone, I'm testing out using Pooled Desktops and publishing Office 2013 via RDSH RemoteApp. Specifically Outlook.

The trouble I'm running into is that when you run one of the applications via RemoteApp in a pooled VDI, "This Computer" is the RDSH and not the VDI, Which can cause problems because we are going to use UPD on the Pooled Collection.

Given that UPDs are collection specific, is there a way to get Office 2013 running on RemoteApp to register the VDIs user directory instead of the RDSH's User directory?

Sorry if this does not make much sense. Also, I could be missing something very simple that I just wasn't able to find in a search or it may not be possible. Either way, Please do let me know and I would be very appreciative.

RDP Client Paste Password Issue

Does anyone else have issues with pasting a password into an RDP Client window whe trying to connect to another machine?  More specifically, if I use the Ctrl + V (Apple style) combination to paste the password, I have no problems at all, but if I use the Shift + Insert (IBM style) combination I can not log in using the RDP client.  This appears to be a recent thing as well but I'm not sure what the cause is as I usually paste text in using Shift + Insert and haven't had any problems up until this last week or so.

When I open up notepad and use both shortcut combinations I get the same exact result displayed.  I'm wondering if something has changed recently (maybe with a product "Update") which is causing this issue to come to light.

TIA

Where to put Session Host

Hello,

Just wanted to find out the consensus on where you would put your session host DMZ with specific rules to get to file share and resources OR on the Internal LAN? RD WEB and Gateway are in the DMZ

I am only thinking about where there might be a weak password(Complexity is on but asdFGH123 would pass :that )) that allows a hacker into the network

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Robbie

P.S> can I put TMG in front of RD WEB to use as single sign on?

Terminal Server Licensing Problems with GPO Security Group License Server

Hello,

I have two fresh installs of W2K12R2.

One is RD Session Host and the other one is the License Server. Everything is fine until I active the GPO Security Group License Server. After that the License Server gives no licenses to die clients (we have User und Device CALs). TS Licensing Diagnostic’s shows no errors, the number of available licenses is displayed correctly, even the state of GPO Security Group License Server is correctly shown as "active" and die Membership in the Group "RDS-Endpointserver" is "Yes". Eventlog shows no Errors. Log in on the session host is even possible, maybe because the RDS-Service is in evaluation time.

If the GPO Security Group License Server is disabled again, the server starts to serve licenses as expected.

I don’t know what I can do anymore, never had problems with exact the same setup under W2K8, but with W2K12 is the second time I notice this issue.

Thanks for your ideas,

Andreas

Windows Server 2012R2 - svchost.exe 60-100% load!

We are using RDS collection with two Windows Server 2012R2 session hosts. Both hosts are virtual servers (clean installation) and are used as session hosts (terminals) with 10 to 25 users each. RDS Connection Broker is also virtual machine with Windows Server 2012 R2. Our users are using Windows 7 Embedded thin clients with MSTSC RDP 8.0.

There is problem with high cpu load on these servers. Sometimes Svchost.exe starts to cause 60-100% load. Our virtual machines have 10 virtual processor cores. Load is caused by LSM (Local Session Manager) Service from DCOM Launcher group. Svchost creates many thread as you can see on picture attached. Sometimes this load disappears after 12-24 hours, sometimes it needs restarting whole server.

We still cannot find cause of this problem, although we managed to reproduce this issue one time by logging two admin accounts to server console and force disconnecting one of these accounts by third admin account connecting to server console by RDP mstsc.exe with -admin parameter.

Our users are very unsatisfied :-(

This is screenshot of Process Explorer - svchost.exe - Threads:

using an RDP connection to connect to RDS

Hi,

I'm trying to setup  Remote desktop services.

its all working over the web interface but i need to get it working over an RDP connection.

the problem is what do you put in the "computer name" of the rdp connection.

it works if i put one of the session host servers in the computer name but i'm now testing failover, so when i power off the session host server i had in computer name it no longer works. I can put in the second session host server name but realistically i cant ask users to change session host names, plus how would they know what computer name to put in anyway.

i tried putting the colleciton name in but that does nothing. tried messing with farm settings in gateway manager but not sure what i'm doing there.

anyone know how to get around this?

thanks

syspreped VM in off state is not listed in VD template list during 2012R2 RDS desktop collection creation

Someone has mentioned this in another post which is a bit old and still open... I decided to raise it again here.

  • I have had the following setup and cannot see my prepared VM in the RDS VD template list.
  • The same setup was working well for me based on Server 2012.
  • I also had another successful deployment on Server 2012R2 but with all roles in one machine.
  • Is it now an known issue that for Server 2012R2 all RDS roles have to be in same machine?

1. Physical workstation Server 2012R2 installed with Hyper-V and RDVH role

2. VM Server 2012R2 on Hyper-V (#1) with RDCB role

3. VM Server 2012R2 on Hyper-V (#1) with RDWA role

4. VM desktop Win7/Win8 on Hyper-V (#1) done sysprep and in power off status

5. Create RDS virtual desktop collection, in the "specify virtual desktop template" screen, the list is empty

Remote control issue with only some users

$

I'm having an issue that I can't seem to find any reference to anywhere.

Our client has two servers. One is Server 2003 and is running AD, the other is 2008R2 and is running terminal services.

When I create a new user in AD, if I set the option in AD to allow remote control, do not require permission and interact and I set these options before the first time the user logs into the terminal then I can remote control that user's session without a problem.

However, if I leave the defaults in AD to allow remote control but require the user's permission and the user logs into the terminal the first time with permissions set like that then forever more I can never remote into that user's sessions. Changing the options in AD later to not require user's permission no longer helps. When I try to remote into that user's session the user does not get a pop-up requesting permission, rather I just get an Access Denied message. If I try to shadow via an elevated command prompt I get error 317. I haven't been able to find any differences in GP or the registry between users that I can shadow and those I can't. Some setting specific to each user is getting set on first login that can't seem to be undone by changing the settings in AD. Where might I find this?

Thanks!

RemoteApp with host connected to VPN

$

Hi,

I have a question regarding RemoteApp vs regular Remote Desktop Connection spiced with a VPN connection initiated from the host.

We're in the process of moving from PCs to thin clients and we have set up an RDS farm (all servers are Windows Server 2012 R2, they are all in the same domain and same LAN) as follows:

1 x RD Connection Broker + RD Licensing + RD Web Access

3 x RD Session Host

The users/clients will connect with regular remote desktop connection software (no Citrix or anything). Two of the RD SHs will be providing the users access to their normal applications, but some users also need to use remote resources which are only available via VPN connection, hence the third RD SH. (Currently it is solved by every user having a virtual machine on their PCs and connecting to the VPN from there.) We can't put the VPN connection to the two "regular" RD SHs, because we'll need more VPN connections later. The idea was to install and set up the VPN on the third host and publish the needed apps by RemoteApp to the users who use it.

The problem:

Once the host connects to the VPN the users are unable to launch the RemoteApp applications. If it's not connected then they can start them. The VPN client is a Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client that can only connect if the connection is initiated by a local user and no other user is currenty logged on (it's a remote side policy we can't change). If the users connect to the RD host with a regular remote desktop connection after the VPN is set up then it works as expected, they can launch the apps and work with them.

The question:

What is the difference between launching a RemoteApp and connecting to the RD host via RDP? How can I debug this RemoteApp connection problem?

Please ask if something is not clear!

Thank you!

PS: If I'm not heading into the right direction and someone has a better idea, I'd be grateful to hear (read) it!

RDS 2012 Published through TMG

Here's the test setup:

  1. internal domain forest: espaxis.net
  2. internal tree domain: tpmaxis.net
  3. Hyper-V 2012 R2 Domain controller: dctpm.tpmaxis.net
  4. Hyper-V 2012 R2 RDS Server: apptpm.tpmaxis.net  (RD Connection Broker, RD Web Access, RD Gateway)
  5. RD Gateway Server:  apptpm.tpmaxis.net
  6. RD Web Access URL: https://apptpm.tpmaxis.net/RdWeb
  7. TMG 2010 Server: gw.espaxis.net
  8. Internal URL: https://apptpm.tpmaxis.net
  9. External URL: https://app.somedomain.com  (DNS working fine)
  10. CA Issued Certificate: app.somedomain.com
  11. SS Certificate: apptpm.tpmaxis.net

Questions:

  1. Does the  RDS Server (deployment not actual network name) need to be setup with server name: app.somedomain.com or apptpm.tpmaxis.net?
  2. Do the RD Connection Broker, RD Web Access, RD Gateway Certificates all need to follow name above?
  3. As I understand the process,  the RDS client sets up an SSL Tunnel through the TMG to the RD Gateway,  and so I should expect the remote app to be looking for the internal App Server name apptpm.tpmaxis.net and not app.somedomain.com?

I have gotten this all working internally,  and limited success from the internet.  From a remote site I can connect, login and get the app collection folder on the RdWeb,  but when I launch an app I get App Disconnected and a complaint that it cannot connect to the app server.

Slowness when connecting to RemoteApp configured in Windows 2008 R2 Server using RDP file

$

Dear All,

When connecting to a RemoteApp configured in Windows 2008 R2 with less privileged user it takes ~20 seconds to connect.

Initial connection toapplication takes about 20-30 seconds and once loaded, subsequent RemoteApp connection takes 2-3 seconds. i.e. if there is a disconnected session available in the server it connects quickly otherwise it takes long time.

I am seeing this issue with Windows 2008 Server, when I connect to a Windows 2012 Server RemoteApp gets connected quickly. Also if I try with higher privileged user (like RemoteAdmin) connection is quick. The user I am trying is having lot of group policies set to limit user access to file system, desktop and registries.

If I keep UAC settings to minimal level connection happens quickly(i.e. solves this issue). But I am not supposed to change the server UAC setting. It seems this has something to do with the list of group policies set for the user.

Any suggestion to avoid this first time connection delay for less privileged users for connecting to RemoteApp (in Windows 2008 Server).

Thanks

RDWeb - password change not working with cross forest trust - 2012r2

$

Hello Everyone,

I have a RDS implementation working with 2012r2 in a domain A.
Users from domain B (With an external two-way non-transitive trust with A) can access, log-in, use remoteapps, rds sessions, etc..

The problem is when I enable the RDWeb password reset feature. For example, taking 2 users with the "User must change password at next logon" option enabled:
If the user is from domain A, I get prompted to change the password and it works great.
If the user is from domain B, I get prompted to change the password, but after writing the new password it says that the user name or password is not valid.

Any clues?

I found this issue that I don't know if it's somehow related

RDS 2012 R2 WebAccess and disk redirection from WinXP clients

Good Day.

We are migrating our TS infrastructure to new RDS 2012R2 Farm. Here is a problem (only from WinXP clients):

1. I am going to RD Web Access and successfully logging

2. I could see the icons of published RemoteApps

3. After i am trying to connect to RemoteApp i see the warning about publisher  and also i see the "Allow the remote computer to access the following resources on my computer" there are checkboxes but without names and if i even check this checkboxes i could successfully launch application on terminal server but there is no local drives from client. See "pic1.jpg"

4. If i try to connect to Terminal Server directly (without Web Access Server) from the same WinXP client, i see checkboxes for resources with names, after successfull logging i could see my local disks on terminal server. See "pic2"

All WinXP worstations are SP3 + .Net Framework 4.0 + RDP 7.0.

The strange thing when i am starting Remote App from Web Access and when i trying to connectto TS directly i see two different versions of warning (visually) it look like tha when i am starting RemoteApp from Web it is launching RDP 6.XX

Need some advise, plese help...

setting default printers

Hello,

We have a small farm of three host servers. and about 50 users.  There are pockets of users who need to have the same default printer across all host servers.   Rather than use roaming profiles we thought we might be able to script or use some other method to set the defaults printers.  We are not using printer redirection so each host server is a print server with identical printers.  Are there any methods out there using scripting or something else besides roaming profiles to accomplish this?

RDS License server differences, between 2012 and 2012 R2

$

We run AD at a functional level of 2008 R2, but also have servers running 2012 and 2012 R2.  We were running on the grace period for Terminal Services 2012 device CALs, because I hadn't had time to install the 2012 CALs that I'd purchased.  On the day that the grace period expired (of course), I created a license server, on a 2012 machine, and installed the CALs.  The 2012 servers all worked fine. The 2012 R2 servers, however, couldn't find the license server.

When I ran the "RD Licensing Diagnoser" and pointed it at one of the 2012 R2 servers, it broke and gave me an error message.

I checked the "Built In" AD security entry for "Terminal Server License Servers" and all my RD license servers were listed.

After a day of playing around, I went to the group policy editor (thanks to another article) and set the terminal license server search order in "Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\ Licensing".That fixed my problem.

Any thoughts on why the initial install of my 2012 R2 servers exhibited this problem?

RDS 2012 Multiple Gateways

Hi all,

In a RDS 2012 R2 setup, is it possible to have two independant gateways (not HA)? One gateway would answer to gateway.xyz.com and the other would answer to gateway.abc.com.  This setup would require two different certificates. Is this possible?

Thanks,

directory quotas for profiles using UPD

$

Hi. We have 2012 R2 RDS deployment using profiles stored as UPD (User Profile Disks). We need to be able to dynamically change the quota for the user.

Therefore at creation we defined UPD maximum size (that will never be reached), but we need to be dynamically control each user's quota and change it on demand. Example: we've configured max UPD disk size to be 200GB, but we need to set quota for users anywhere between 1GB and those 200GB.

Using traditional local/roaming profiles, this could be easily solved using directory quotas on the C:\Users folder on the RDSH server.

However with UPD, this approach doesn't work, since profiles stored as UPD disks are mounted at logon as mount points and are not recognized by FSRM (File Server Resource Manager) correctly (partially understandably since mount point is not a directory).

The only approach you can take with this is log on the user, then set the quota manually, then logoff (since the folder is only mounted when the user is logged in and quota cannot be created if the path doesn't exist).

Is there a better solution to this as the manual way (and especially restricted by the condition that the user must be logged on while creating the quota) is not acceptable.

Hyper-V 2012 R2. RemoteFx. "The remote session was disconnected because there were network problems during the licensing protocol. Please try connecting to the remote computer again."

After a Installation from Windows 8.1/windows 7 everything works fine. For example  Install updates and Software. If I connect the first time a remotefx card i can use RDP as well. But if i restart the host I get the mentioned error. What can I do. These Hosts are not in a domain configuration. I tried it too but there was  no difference. I didn't discovered any errors in the eventlog, too. Only an actviex error. But same errors occurs with a succsefull rdp session.

Also strange is if i start the vm without a remotefx card it works fine again. Only session with a Remotefx card aren't possible anymore.

Is there a bug or something. I tried it many times with the same error.

Maybe someone can help me.

kind regards

Tobi
