Certificate Mismatch RDS Session Host

$

I've been banging my head against this for the last few days. I have a server 2012 remote desktop setup as follows:

  • 1 Gateway Server
  • 1 RD Web Access Serve
  • 1 Session Broker, which is also a session host
  • 1 Additional Session host

I'm using remote app to publish applications rather than desktops. I've got a wildcard certificate for the external domain, which works fine for the gateway and web access server, the problem comes with the session hosts, which are giving me a certificate mismatch error because connections are made to the internal name (which is a .local address) which obviously does not match the external certificate.

I have a DNS zone for the external name setup on this domain, so that machines can be resolved by internal or external names.

I've made some progress by following the steps here - http://serverfault.com/questions/524092/rds-rdweb-and-remoteapp-how-to-use-public-certificate-for-launching-apps-on-s, and things now work fine if I only have the session host that is also the broker enabled. Once I add the second session host, any requests that go to that get the certificate error. Connections to the first session host still work fine.

Does anyone know a way to have requests be made to the external name of the session host?

is there a way to stop remote desktop flushing the clipboard when it closes?

i've got so used to the permanence of the clipboard that this impermanence is just exasperating.

reproduce:

  1. open remote dektop session.
  2. copy necessary values into clipboard.
  3. close remote dektop session.
  4. paste into app...
  5. d'oh!

every. single. time.

RDP audio issues with Windows Server 2008

I have a server with an M-Audio 1010LT audio card installed, running audio playback software.  This software needs to stay running and playing at all times.

We were previously running Windows Server 2003 and when we RDPed into the box for maintenance, we simply made sure that 'Leave at remote computer" was selected under Remote Desktop's sound settings.  This allowed us to control the console of the server while the audio continued to play through the server's audio card.

Now, with Windows Server 2008, even with this option selected when we remote into this server all audio stops and Windows shows no available audio devices.  If I end my RDP session and phyically go to the server, I see the audio devices and am able to re-start the audio playback.

Is this a bug, or something that has changed in 2008?  Any workarounds?

Thanks

2012 R2 License server will not upgrade 2003 licenses to permanent

We migrated our Remote desktop licensing from server 2012 to server 2012 R2. We have 2003, 2008, and 2012 licenses installed. The migration was smooth with no issues. I usedhttps://activate.microsoft.com as I have before.

The new license server has been up and running for a few weeks and all seems good. The License server is issuing temporary licenses for all OS'es (server 2003, 2008, and 2012).

When I go into the licensing console, I see that the 2008 and 2012 licenses are being upgraded to permanent and this is verified in the event viewer by Event ID 82 ( The "Temporary"  Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 : TS or RDS Per Device CAL belonging to computer "XX-XXXXX" has been upgraded to "Permanent" Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 : TS or RDS Per Device CAL.)

However, the Server 2003 licenses are not being upgraded to permanent status, the event viewer shows no errors and the users are not reporting any issues.

Has anyone else seen this issue and know why the licenses are not being upgraded or know how to correct it?

RDS 2012 R2 60 second delay on Windows 7 PC's

Hi

I have a very annoying problem that i've been trying to solve for the last couple of months but i'm no further forward.

I have installed a Windows 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services with the intention of publishing remote apps.

I can run the RemoteApp through Windows 8.1 with no problems but if I try the same app through a Windows 7 client I get a 60 second delay before the first app appears.

I have checked all DNS entries to make sure they resolve. I have a wildcard certificate from GoDaddy. I have a split DNS so I can use the external FQDN to access the server internally. I've also changed the published FQDN using the following article http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Change-published-FQDN-for-2a029b80

I don't know what else I can check.

Has anybody got any ideas?

RDCB HA with local SQL DB

Hi,

I'd like to minimize the number of machines needed to create a RDS 2012 new farm but I'd like it to be highly available too.

For the moment I have 4 RDSH servers and 2 RD Web servers which are also RDCB servers. I won't be able to add 2 new servers to make a SQL Mirror.

So I wonder if it's possible to install and Mirror databases on the servers where RD Connection Broker and RD Web are deployed.

Thanks

Setting Up Remote Desktop Services Windows 2012 DMZ

Hi

I'm new to the Windows 2012 RDS. I am trying to figure out some things.

I have an application that I would like to publish to the outside world to our customers.

Im thinking of using Windows 2012 remote desktop services and publish the app via web browser. So users go to the URL and see the application.

Do I need a client brooker and gateway server for this setup? or can i simply deploy a web access server on the dmz which then connects to my remote session host server inside?

VDI Session Timeout

I've got our Windows VDI servers up and working perfectly.  We've deployed a few different pools of VDI's for our different setups.  We're having issues with one of them.  Basically, we have a pool dedicated to kiosk computers.  The VDI's work perfectly themselves, but for some reason keep disconnecting after a long idle period of inactivity (like overnight).  I'd like to have these terminals not disconnected at all unless manually done so.  I've double check all GP settings and nothing has been set for session timeout.  Is there a setting of some sort that can be set on the connection broker that will prevent this from happening?

Second question, if there isn't a setting, what is the max idle timeout period?

Thanks for the support.

Joey

Remote Desktop NLA / CredSSP timeout

Hi all

Hopefully someone else has encountered this issue or has some ideas about how to resolve it.

We have a thin client environment setup (W7 Embedded) in kiosk mode. When the thins start up, they autologin and auto-launch the RDP client to connect to our RDS server.

The issue we're having is that if they sit idle at the "Enter your credentials" screen for more than 20 minutes, the first logon attempt will always fail with "the two computers couldn't connect in the amount of time allotted"

Second login works just fine.

This seems to happen regardless of RDP client version (have tried 6.1.7601 & 6.2.9200) or Server OS (2008 R2 & 2012).

My troubleshooting and thinking thus far is that it's somehow related to Kerberos ticket timeouts or something like that.

It's also entirely possible this is by design, I'm just not sure.

Testing I've done:

Adjusting ALL the different RDP idle timeouts

Workgroup machine RDC 6.1.7601 -> Server 2012 RDSH

Workgroup machine RDC 6.2.9200 -> Server 2012 RDSH

Domain-joined machine RDC 6.1.7601 -> Server 2008 R2 (just administering)

Same error on all the above

Any help or pointers would be much appreciated!

Combining APP-V with RDS

Please I need this personal information from you.

We are running MS Dynamics RMS in our environment sitting on three different Terminal Servers (Not Farm) because they point to different Databases? We are planning to consolidate them.

Is it possible to install the RMS applications  on a Single session host while each of them point to their respective databases?

Can App-V with RDS solve this issue?

I will appreciate if you can assist with this information

Server 2012 R2 Office Notifications Blank

$

Hi,

We're running Server 2012 R2 in a Citrix XenApp environment, we also have Office 2013 Pro Plus installed.

We also have the Desktop experience feature enabled on our servers.

However, if we go into the charms bar>Change PC Settings>Search and Apps>Notifications --the only app we can see in there is Internet Explorer.

We would like to add Outlook 2013 to this, which will in turn allow users to receive a pop up notification when they receive a new e-mail (As it does in Office 2013 on Windows 8.1)

We have tried un-installing and re-installing Office, this has not worked.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Hakan

Remote desktop opens and then closes almost immediately

I am trying to remote desktop from a Windows 8 computer to another Windows 8 computer. As soon as the RDP session starts, I can see the background image of the destination computer, but it will suddenly close with no error on screen.

I think a big clue is what I see in Event Viewer on the client. There are a number of informational message and the following warning: RDPClient_SSL: An error was encountered when transitioning from TsSslStateHandshakeInProgress to TsSslStateDisconnecting in response to 8 (error code 0x80004005).

The messages look like this:

  • Info: RDP ClientActiveX is trying to connect to the server (Cybertron)
  • Info: Server supports SSL = supported
  • Info: Base64(SHA1(UserName)) is = -
  • Warning: RDPClient_SSL: An error was encountered when transitioning from TsSslStateHandshakeInProgress to TsSslStateDisconnecting in response to 8 (error code 0x80004005).
  • The multi-transport connection has been disconnected.
  • RDP ClientActiveX has been disconnected (Reason= 263)

Since I see the background (briefly), I think it’s safe to assume it’s not a network issue or simple misconfiguration. I configured the client machine so I know its history.  I inherited the one I am trying to RDP into, but it was pretty close to vanilla when I got it and I’ve fully patched it. There were a number of RDP alternatives like Logmein and PUTTY installed, so my only guess is the previous owner had the same problem as me and couldn’t fix it.

Neither machine is on a domain (if it matters) and I’m just using local accounts.

There doesn’t seem to be any useful posts for the warning, so I’m just working my way through troubleshooting guides, but hoping somebody can speed up my process.

Can Microsoft's Remote Desktop wake up PCs using WOL?

Can Microsoft's Remote Desktop App wake up PCs using WOL?
Today I always have to run the WakeOnLan App first to wake up the PC and then access it using Remote Desktop. Would be great to have this happening when clicking on the Desktop from the list. Is there a way to enable the Remote Desktop Program to send the wakeup package alone?

Also, is it possible to save a link to a remote desktop on the MacOS desktop, so I can connect the PC with a single click?

Thanks

Dirk

Seems that the RDS gateway is not sending keep-alives (WIN SRV 2012 DC)

$

I have a Azure VM RDS farm that consist of two servers (Win 2012 datacenter).  One running the session host and the other running everything else.  We have the Gateway set up for external users, and everything seemed to work just fine.  But today our client noticed that if they minimize the session window (we have remoteapps published) it will disconnect in about 30 seconds.  If they leave the window up it works just fine.  Now this issue is only happening when somebody connects to the connection broker through the gateway.  If they are on the internal network everything works just fine.

Here is what i have done so far,

- ensured that the Keep alive interval in GPedit was enabled and set to 1 on both servers

- run network monitor on all servers and clients to get insight

the clients internally are getting the keep alive from the session host

the session host is also sending keep alives to the gateway

no keep alives are being sent to the client from the gateway.  and the client is not receiving any at all.

I'm open to any and all suggestions, as I've been pulling my hair out for the last 6 hours.  And I thought only SharePoint could cause me this much frustration.

Deleting print driver on a Windows Server 2008 R2 - Role: TS

Hi,

I have a problem with deleting 3 print drivers on one of our Terminal servers, it keep saying this:

Failed to remove driver HP LaserJet M3027 mfp PCL6. The specified printer driver is currently in use.
Failed to remove driver HP LaserJet M4345 mfp PCL6. The specified printer driver is currently in use.
Failed to remove package prnhp002.inf. Access is denied.

The reason of this removing, is that HP has finally made there Universal Driver for 2008 R2, and therefore want to clean up in old drivers on our 4 terminal servers.

I have tried to stop spool service, but then i can't get in to "Print Server Properties", where i can find the print drivers installed.

Is it because i choose "Remove driver and driver package"?
Or is it because the driver file are the same for for the old driver and the HP universal driver?

Hi All.

I have followed several guides on the internet, they all say, they can accomplish SSO.

I have not been able to make it Work, i need to know if what i am doing is correct.

I have made a Group policy on client computers OU, that allow 'Delegating Default Credentials'  i have inserted TERMSRV/*.Companyname.com

I can see the Group policy be implemented on the client.

On my internal webinteraces(IIS) on /RDWEB i have removed Anonomous authentication, and enabled Windows authentication.

The users is automatically logged in to the website, but when they try and start a application, the recieve a prompt, where to type in their Windows credentials.

Have any of you Guys made this Work, in my World they should not be prompted for the Windows credentials.

i use a * certificate for publishing applications, and for the single sign on in the RDS management console.

i have another certficate for the webservers , and another for gateway servers.

they  are all trusted, and seems to Work.

RD Gateway in DMZ with RODC, computer password updates

$

We're bringing up an RDP 2012 farm which will have a pair of Gateway servers out in the DMZ.  After considering our options with respect to AD membership, we would prefer to use the RODC approach as we already have one in the DMZ.  My confusion is about communication that requires write access, like updating the computer account password in AD.  I see the approach is a recommended method form Microsoft, but how are issues such as the account password change addressed?

I found http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2009/02/15/test2.aspx that talks about disabling the password change on the machine, but is there a better way than registry hacks to make this work, or am I completely overthinking the whole situation?

I'm aware we could also setup a reverse proxy, setup a DMZ domain and create a 1-way trust, or open all the ports necessary for communication through the firewall, but this option seems best for us.

RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter Enabled VDI with RDWeb

We have a Win7 Sp1 VDI Desktop Collection with the RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter enabled.   All RDP client hotfixes installed in the image.

RD Virtualization Host is Server 2012 R2

I can access these desktops with my RDP client directly only if I change the connection speed to LAN.    I need to make this collection available via RDWeb, however when launching from there it gets to "estimating connection quality" and then dies.    I attempted to use powershell to set the collection custom parameters like this:   Set-RDVirtualDesktopCollectionConfiguration
-CollectionName "[collection name]" -CustomRdpProperty
"connection type:i:6`nnetworkautodetect:i:0`n[custom properties]"

Still the same problem persists.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
