Dual monitor and performance

$

Hi,
Has anyone here measured the amount of resources it takes if the clients are using dual monitors?
Are there any guidelines on how much bandwidth and server capacity is required at different screen resolutions? I have many users how use dual 24" monitors with their thin clients and they experience a slowness in their sessions. It was not as noticable when they used one screen.

Thanks for any imputs.

Remote Desktop access to our Windows Server 2012 R2 machine

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 box with a business application installed on it that I would like to give access to users from a few external laptops running Windows 7 SP1.

I have installed all of the RD roles on the Server, mapped our static IP address to remote.companyname.com and I have successfully connected to the server using this address in the RD client on laptop in a remote location.

However, whilst connecting from this laptop I seem to be able to navigate around the server. The server will take connections from users with Standard accounts so they won't be able to change anything important, but I don't really want them poking around the server at all if possible.

Have I gone about this in the best way, or is there another solution which might work better?

Windows 7 w/ 8.1 RDP client error with 2012 RD Gateway

I've deployed a new RDS server w/ RD Gateway based on Windows Server 2012. Everything seems to be in working order on the server and its various roles. I've been testing internal and external access to the RD Gateway from both Windows 7 & Windows 8 computers using various web browsers. (frankly my whole reason for the new deployment)

Windows 8 computers seem to be working fine in IE, FireFox and Chrome although I will get prompted for credentials a 2nd time in Chrome and/or Firefox.

On my Windows 7 x64 PC I keep getting the following error when I launch the desktop from the portal:

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:

1) Remote Access to the server is not enabled

2) The remote computer is turned off

3) The remote computer is not available on the network

Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled.

Yesterday before I added the server to the RAS & IAS Servers I was logging Event ID 201 in the Terminal-Services Gateway log however those errors have subsided with the group membership change.

What have I missed here?

Thank you for any guidance on this!

is UDP a real advantage in RD services?

Hi,

I'm wondering if enabling UDP is a significant improvement for end-users experience as I hesitate to enable it in my RDS deployment, since it will require a re-design of my gateways in my DMZ.

Anyone would like to share their experiences?

Thanks

Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Connection Broker

I have installed RDS on a server named PLUTO on which Windows 2012 R2 datacenter is in. There is a domain controller (domain name: AGROSY)installed on another server on which Windows NT is installed. We have used Samba 3.6.6 to control the file sharing system.

When I attempt to install RDS in Server Manager, it states as following: could not retrieve the deployment information from RD connection broker server pluto.AGROSY.

Then, I searched a lot of solutions, e.g.  and tried as following:

Enter-PSSession -ComputerName pluto   --> which works;

but Enter-PSSession -ComputerName pluto.AGROSY   --> which gives the error message as: Enter-PSSession : Connecting to remote server pluto.AGROSY failed with the following error message : WinRM cannot process the request. The following error with errorcode 0x80090311  occurred while using Kerberos authentication: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.

If I ping the pluto.AGROSY, it works as well.

I have no idea how it can be solved, please help me out. Thanks a lot!

Client VM RDP Certificates in 2012 R2 RDS Farm Virtualization Host Environment

How do you stop an RDP Session self-signed certificate warning from popping up when connecting to pooled VMs running in an RDS Virtualization Host environment?

Scenario is test using all 2012 R2 servers and RDS deployment. Certificates in use are internal CA and have added root cert from CA on all clients being used in the testing environment (domain-joined and non domain) to get past the usual cert issues with RD Web Access, RD Broker connectivity, RD Gateway... etc. However, cannot seem to get past the RDP session popping up a cert warning when connecting to a VM. The warning is related to the self-signed cert on the VM which in this case is Win7 Pro.

Basic entry to VM is going through RD Web Access and selecting the collection named associated with pooled Win7 desktops deployed on a 2012 R2 Hyper-V Virtualization Host.

Load balancing RD Session host servers & Certificate error

I have three RD Session host servers  Named RDSH1, RDSH2 and RDSH3.

Two servers RDSH1 and RDSH2, are user  in addition to RD SH as RD CB and RD WA.  I have deploy both in  HE deployment with Windows NLB. RD CB and RD WA use the same  url CBPub.domain.com.

I have created  collection and add all three servers to that collection. I have published application, and it works. Users connect without warning to all three servers, when using RD WEB. But when  user try to connect to terminal server using mstsc and url of RCCB CBPub.domain.com, I get certificate warning  only when connecting to  RDSH3 server where warring is for RDSH3.domain.com. I’m probably missing something basic.

RDSH3 has in private computer store same certificate, that is deployed on all three servers. It was deploy manual prior   RS SH deployment. It is the same certificate as it is installed on  RDSH1 & RDSH2 server.

RDS Connection Broker does not distribute the load among Session Hosts

$

Hello Folks,

I have a three server RDS setup in which the roles are distributed as follows:

S1 -> RD Web Acc / RD Gateway / RD Connection Broker /Session Host

S2 -> Licensing Server / Session Host

S3 -> Session Host (and most powerful server)

I would like the load to be distributed among the session hosts, depending on the resources of the servers. But in my setup, all the apps launched by the users are ran on S1 for some reason.

Also, when I disable S1 from the list of session hosts that accept new connections, and start a new app from the conseole, I get an error saying: " An authentication error has occurred (Code0x607)"

Any tips?

Edit: I had a workaround for Code 0x607 but I still get an error saying that "Couldn't open this program or file. Either there was a problem with <appname> or the file you're trying to open couldn't be accessed"

Windows Server 2012 R2 - Remote Desktop Easy Print

Merhaba asagidaki adimlari uygulamama ragmen easy printer ozelligi kapanmadi.  baska ne yapmaliyim.

Step 01
Edit the following group policy objects to make Easy printing as the second priority.
Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services\Terminal Server\Printer Redirection\Use Terminal Services Easy Print printer driver first
– Disable
User Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services\Terminal Server\Printer Redirection\Use Terminal Services Easy Print printer driver first
– Disable
You have to do this on all remote desktop host servers if you have a farm. This will make Easy printer driver use as the second option, it will not going to disable easy printing.

Step 02
To work with the conventional printing, you have to install the exact same client’s printer driver on the Session host Server.
Easiest way to install the clients same printer driver to server is share the printer in client side , and access it from the server, when accessing the driver will be copied to windows server 2012 session host server. Then using the add printer add the correct printer driver to the server.
Check the printer drivers from Printer server properties and drivers tab

rd1

Note – Remember, Client computer and session host server should have same exact printer driver

Step 03
1. Log off all existing sessions and initiate a new Remote desktop session,
2. Go to devices and printers – redirected printer should be available here,
3. right click and select printer properties – select advance tab
4. Printer driver should be set to real printer device driver not as Easy Print Driver.

rd2
Printer set to Easy print driver

rd3
Mapped printer with client’s printer driver, your redirect printer should look like this.

5. Check with printing.

If you have installed correct drivers, printer driver will be mapped in advance view of printer properties. If the client computers is having different printer drivers, all of those drivers required to add in to the session host server. If the client is having 32 bit drivers, those drivers also required to be in the windows server 2012 or 2008R2 server.

Do I need to install user licenses to RDP to the server?

I have a 2003 terminal server running an app that is accessed by only a handful of users. Users remote desktop into the server to use this app. The app is licensed for the handful of users.

The app needs to update to the latest version and does not support server 2003. I have a server 2008 r2 (virtualized on hyper-v 2012 r2 server) with the RD session host role installed.

Before installing the RD licensing role, I checked the 2003 term. server license configuration and there's non. So, it looks like licensing per user or device has not been setup. My question is, do I need to setup licensing for this scenario?

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Alex

Redirect ONLY the local C: drive

$

We are using Windows Server 2008 R2 RDSH

I need the end user to be able to access their local C: drive.  No big deal.  If I use MSTSC to access the server, it takes all my preferences.  However, if I use the URL we are publishing for the end users, it simply redirects ALL drives.

Since most of these people also have network drives mapped on their client machines they end up with a ton of drives showing in Windows Explorer.

Is there a way to direct ONLY the client computer C: drive that will work whether using an RDP file or the Gateway URL?

I couldn't find anything in a web search or searching the forums

RDS 2012 R2 + User Profile Disks - corrupt ntuser.dat after RDS Host crashes

$

I have an RDS 2012 R2 Session host collection set up with a connection broker and with UPD's running off a share with Server 2008 R2. All worked great.. until one of the Session Hosts crashed/blue screened and dumped the users.

When the users reconnected from the server that crashed, they all logged in with temporary profiles.  After a bunch of testing and troubleshooting I found that the ntuser.dat file in their UPD's became corrupt.  We have 1 Session host that seems to have an issue with occasional blue screening and it's causing a significant pain to consistently have to re-create the user profile disks of the users that were logged in if a session host is powered down abruptly.

I really like the feature, but I'm starting to look at alternatives.  The content in the profile disks isn't super critical, it's primarily shortcuts and program settings but it's annoying for users when they reset.

anyone else seeing similar issues?  any suggestions to dealing with it? (i'm trying to avoid doing regular backups of a "convenience feature").

How to prevent bypass of RDP Gateway (Without TMG/ISA)?

$

We want to set up RDP Gateway (intended only for remote users who are not using VPN) and require that users must always use multifactor authentication to connect from outside connections.

Apparently, even if you setup your RDP Web site to require 2FA, users can easily bypass this if they enter the gateway info in their local mstsc.exe client.

How can we either force connections through the rdweb site's 2FA or, better yet, force 2FA even if the user opens their remote desktop client directly?

The only solution I found says you can only do this with ISA ot TMG.  We don't have these and they are not even a valid option available for sale anymore even if we wanted to purchase them.

These blogs posts are quite old now.  Is there a new, better solution for this problem now?

RDS User's files

Sorry in advance for another newbie question. So I've configured an RDS environment in Windows Server 2012 R2. I can navigate tohttp://test.domain.local/rdweb from any domain joined pc and login. I then launch my desktop collection I've created. Everything works great. BUT my question now is, where is the "home" folder or drive for this user? Is it the entire C: drive? is it just my user folder (documents, desktop, etc)? Is there anything else I need to configure to create a home directory or drive for each user or is it automatically created somewhere at the first login for each user?

NOTE: I'm not talking about a shared directory or anything, just the personal folder/drive that the user and any admins would be able to see.

Thanks!

Question regarding reconnecting to server in RDS Farm on 2008R2 Server

$

I have a load balanced terminalserver cluster on Windows 2008R2. My question is how do i get the ConnectionBroker to release the session id after one server failes.

For example. One user is online on server x. If i simulate a failure of that server (turn it of without shutting it down first) the remote desktop client tries to reconnect to that server-farm name (xxx_serverfarm_1). Round robin returns another server and tries to connect to that one. All according to plan.

In the session broker logs i can see that a Connection comes from Another server, but the session broker finds a session for my user account and tries to reconnect to that server. (that is correct however, since had the server been online it should connect to the session). However, the server is shut down and hence it cannot connect. However, after 10 reconnection tries the rdp client it still cannot connect to Another server in the farm automatticly. Even after the shut down server is removed automatticly from the serverfarm the RDP client still cannot connect automatticly. If i cancel and manually connect to the server farm, the client gets connected successfully.

But, since a lot of our clients are unmanned stations, we would like that they could reconnect successfully without manually start the rdp client.

Have we configured something wrong, or is this by design?

print to lpt1 where remote desktop client has usb printer

I have a client with an usb printer and need to print an UPS label report from Microsoft Dynamic NAV on an remote server that prints only to LPT1. I've set the client printer as shared printer and selected LPT1 and USB ports.  When the client is connected to the server through remote desktop, the redirected printer can print a test print but running the report from the application on the server will not print  to the client's printer.  The report shows that it was sent to LPT1 but there are no errors or print jobs in the printer queue.  I've also tried to use "net use" to set up the shared printer to LPT1 but that didn't work either.  And I've installed the printer on the server to LPT1 as well and that did not work either.

Any help is greatly appreciated.  The server is Windows Server 2008 R2 and the client is Windows 7.

Thanks,

Onscreen Keyboard appears when shadowing session on 2012R2 Remote Desktop Session Host

$

As the title suggests, whenever I shadow a session on our 2012R2 RDSH server, the onscreen keyboard appears.  The taskbar also unlocks.

Both of these behaviours mean that the user can tell when their session is being shadowed, which I don't always want to be the case - sometimes I want to be able to monitor the session without their knowledge.

Anyone know how I can stop this from happening?
