Best method for connecting clients to vdi sessions

$
0
0

I have created a session-based VDI collection (full desktop) on Server 2012 R2 and I am trying to figure out the best way to connect my clients.

The clients are Dell OptiPlex 755 PC's that are currently running Windows 8.1.  There are ~40 of them and they all currently auto login using the same generic domain account.  They are only allowed to run Internet Explorer and Adobe Reader with printing.

Any thoughts on how to best automate the connections?  In theory, it would be nice if this could all be set in group policy but I am open to other suggestions.

The aggregation of RemoteApp from multi sources

Hello,

I deployed one RD connection broker and connected to two RD session hosts as a farm,   published the same Remote application , like MS word in both RD session hosts, the RD broker aggregates the RemoteApp from the two RD session hosts. the RD web access use the RD brokers to connect RemoteApp.   user see TWO MS wordin RD web page,   is it by design? as I thought ,the broker role should aggregate the same applications that published in different RD Session hosts as one RemoteApp,  then balance which RD session host is available and will take the connection. is that right ?  if yes, how to configure it?

btw,   all servers are based on Windows 2008 R2.

Thanks in advance!

VDI Broker not balancing load over hosts

$

Hi,

I have a strange problem. Recently we added another host into our 2012 R2 VDI environment. We have approximately 50 desktops deployed over both hosts. The deployment of the collection and adding vm's works fine and I can see desktops from the collection over both. When people connect it always seems to place the users on host1, never on host2.  Host1 has approx 20 desktops running with 0 on host2 right now.

I can't see any errors in the logs, and I'm a bit mystified as to why i do not get any connections on host2? How can i try and track down what it is up to?

I think i've read before that the broker uses active machines/sessions as its basis so 15 vs 0 should definitely be enough to move new sessions to host2 i would think.

Thanks for any pointers...

Windows Server 2012 Proper setup for Small Home Virtualization - Hyper-V vs Remote Desktop Services

Hello all,

Please forgive me I am a bit new with virtualization setups on Windows as I have manly used them on Linux in the past.  I recently got a few yer old server that has Server 2012 on it and I wanted to inquire about the best setup for me.  I am looking to use it as a small virtualization host for my personal use on my home network.  I will probably only host about 4 virtual operating systems from it at a time, but I am not very familiar with the roles to setup.

I've read basic overviews of "Hyper-V" role vs the "Remote Desktop Services" role, but I am still not clear on if I should be using one or the other or both for my setup.  Like I said I wanted to have a few virtual window instances on my home network and I was hoping to be able to log into them through remote desktop on my desktop/laptop.  My home network is not on a domain encase that makes a difference.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on what roles I need for this setup and then I can research more from there?

Thanks in advance!

Migrating roaming profile from Windows 2000 TS to Windows 2008 R2 RDS

We have one TS running on Windows 2000. There are over 200 TS users. We are planning to migrate it to Windows 2008 R2. What's the easy way to migrate the roaming profile? Base on this article

Generally, user profiles that you create for users in Windows 2000, ... Server  2003 roaming user profile on Windows Vista or on Windows Server2008. ...  These methods migrate the roaming profile data to the new Version 2 user profile  format ...
support.microsoft.com
support.microsoft.com/kb/947025

There are two methods to migrate roaming profile. "Method 2: Use the Folder Redirection feature to share data between Version 1 and Version 2 user profiles" doesn't "migrate the desktop settings and preferences such as wallpaper because of the differences in the operating systems". That isn't for us.

"Method 1: Use the User State Migration Tool to migrate profile data to the new format (Windows Vista Only)" is recommend that you the User State Migration Tool (USMT) to migrate profile data in the following scenarios:

  • You do not use roaming user profiles or folder redirection.
  • You want to enable a more full-featured migration of user profile data from Windows 2000-based or from Windows XP-based systems to Windows Vista-based systems.

Note The User State Migraton Tool will not function on Windows Server 2008.

So the method 1 doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Errors trying to launch apps

We seem to have setup the Server 2012 RDS ok. We can login with Http://.../rdweb and we get a really nice, polished app launch screen (ala Citrix) but when we click on the app to run (from the WAN side...works fine INSIDE the LAN) we get the following error:

"Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway server address requested and the certificate subject name do not match. Contact your network administrator for assistance."

We are using a self signed cert. I have tried using the internal FQDN as well as a WAN FQDN. Neither works.

What am I doing wrong? I need to get this working ASAP so any forward moving suggestions are welcomed. Academic discussions can wait until I get this setup for our client to use.

All of a sudden my Windows 7 x64 computer is unable to connect to random Windows 2008 R2 servers via Remote Desktop.

I can connect to the same servers from other Windows 7 machines.

The only fix I've come across so far is this, except that key doesn't exist on either my machine or on the server(s):

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService\Parameters
  3. Under this registry subkey, delete the following values:
    • Certificate
    • X509 Certificate
    • X509 Certificate ID
  4. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the server.

Does anyone have any suggestions please as I'm at a total loss what is happening here.

Thanks.

Remote assistance can't connect

I have two computers set up, one with Enterprise Server 2008R2 SP1, and one with Windows 7 Enterprise SP1.  I am trying to get remote assistance (RA) working between the machines.  I pass the RA invitation by email.

When I request RA from the server to the Win7 machine, I open the email, click on the invitation, and enter the 12-digit code.  The connection is made and I see the server screen on the win7 box.

When I request RA from the Win7 machine to the server,  I open the invitation and enter the 12-digit code.  TI get a message in the lower left corner or the Windows remote Assistance window stating "Attempting to connect", then "Still attempting to connect...", and then "Stiill attempting to connect.  Please wait...", and finally, a window pops up stating "The person you are trying to help isn't responding".

I have checked the group policy and firewall rules on both machines.  Both are set properly.  I have no idea why it works one way but not the other.

Anybody have an ideas?  Thanks,

Windows 2012 R2 printers showing twice (and unable to set default printer)

$

Hello,

I have a problem that will not just go away. I have two Windows 2012 R2 servers: one with RDS installed for 30 users with an appointment application and one "back-end" server were print queues and database are running.

So basically, users can connect to network printers by clicking on a link that points to the "back-end" server. In Windows 2008 R2, this is so simple but in Windows 2012 R2, I am experiencing tons of issues (with both V3 and V4 drivers). By the way, printer redirection in RDS (remote desktop) is disabled and forbidden by GPOs. I am listing the issues here to see if someone experienced them before:

1. After a disconnection between the printer and the RDP session (the servers are in a remote site as the printers are local and printing through a site-to-site VPN tunnel as they are all IP printers). Example: a power failure will set a particular printer at "offline", which is normal and eventually, it comes back online. But then, the problem starts: the printer "loses" it "default printer" status and none of the printers for a specific user are showing as default printer in his printer list. If I try to set again the desired printer to default, it is already "set as default" but the green "tick" is not showing on the printer icon and printing fails.

2.  When the above happens, I usually try to delete the printer from the user session and reconnect to it. But then, it is even worse: the specified printer is now showing "twice" in the list of "device and printers" for a specific user while working OK for another (when you right click the printer, you see two instances of it). This is interfering with our main application and a specific user session is non functional. A printer will also show in the "unspecified section"

3. Even a bigger problem: if I delete a particular printer from a specific RDS user session, the same printer disappears for all other users using that printer. So each time I try to fix a printer in one user session, I can expect a myriad of issues with the other users.

4. The only way I found to fix this issue (so far) is by rebooting both servers at the end of the day and after power recycling the printer exhibiting the issue. The only other thing I could try (never tried it yet) would be to delete the affected user profile and recreate it on the RDS server. But I do not know yet the consequences of that action (will everyone else lose the defective printer mapping as well???).

5. This issue doesn't seem to be driver or brand related as I had the issue with many printers of different brand. Both servers are virtual under Hyper-v (physical hosts are also Windows 2012 R2) and are running the latest integration version.

If anyone has experienced this issue, please let me know what you have to have done to resolve it. My next step is escalating this to Microsoft.

Thanks.

Benji.

Remote desktop services 2012 R2 remote(external) users having issues

First time poster,

here is my issue might be a long winded one as I have been working on this for over 2 weeks.

I have installed and configured RDS on a brand new install of server 2012 R2 everything on it seems to checks out. All Licences are installed and SSL is in and trusted. I have a third party cert that is install and working this checks out when I log into RDWEB remotely. I have no error messages or errors in the event viewer I can find that tell me what the issue might be. Internally everything works well and for the bulk of my users(so far all windows 7 machines) externally seems to be working. I have two users in separate locations one at a hotel and another one at home(Myself) both are only ones running windows 8.1 pro. we can log into RDWEB and get published ICONS but when we click on them it starts the RDP session and just sits there. My windows 8.1 pro works inside the network via separate VPN or at the office.

Windows Server 2012 R2 RDP sessions with 480x640 desktop size

Hi,

Many handheld devices has a 480x640 screen and are used as RDP clients with full screen sessions

In this resolution the client can interact correctly with the start screen and some of the menus and charms, but when launching applications (modern UI or desktop) the screen just goes blue. Any attempt to interact will display the start screen again, except for right click which does nothing. The issue can be reproduced from any RDP client e.g.: the native client on Win8.1 with mstsc /w 480 /h 640

Any ideas on how to get a functional 480x640 RDP session to Windows Server 2012 R2?

RD Gateway and a challenge/response SMS OTP

$

I'm trying to publish a Windows 2012r2 RDweb and RD gateway server in such a way that in order to use the rd gateway you need to provide your normal AD credentials followed by a prompt for a one-time-password that gets sent to the user by SMS

according to this article:

https://code.msdn.microsoft.com/Remote-Desktop-Gateway-517d6273/view/Reviews

this should be possible using a Pluggable Authentication Module on the gateway server - does anyone know of a product that uses these APIs? or some other method to achieve it?

Note that I can put it behind a (sadly deprecated) TMG server (or a citrix netscaler) and do the sms auth there by radius on the https://server/rdweb interface, but as it is handed off to the mstsc.exe client which tries to tunnel through https://server/rdweb interface, it needs to re-auth, so fails (the above article suggests the cookie can be transferred into the *.rdp file, but it doesn't appear to happen)

the MS Azure MFA service (and a few other 'cloud' auth products I've seen) is a radius server that expects a response to the SMS, via SMS - this is not the solution we're aiming for

Similarly, installing a 3rd party GINA on every host accessible via the gateway is also not an acceptable solution.

logically, the functionality should live at the gateway or the reverse proxy, but I cant find a way of doing it in the reverse proxy, and I cant find a product that uses the API MS provide for it - can someone steer me in the right direction?

I have a 2012 RDS installation of personal VDI.  Users connect to the RDweb server and launch their assigned VDI from there.  Users are experiencing random connection issues when connecting to their VDI via the RDWeb portal.  Here are some events in the logs:

Event 8964 Remote Desktop Virtualization Host failed to process the orchestration request because virtual desktop [VM7REMSBUCJ] is busy processing cleanup from previous logoff event.

Event 8467 Remote Desktop Virtualization Host failed to get redirection authentication information from the virtual machine [VM7REMSBUCJ] .

The events above correspond with a remote users attempting to login in the morning to a VDI with a state of shutdown.
