RemoteApp deploymentRD

I have a AD DC which also hosts the RDS role (2008R2) and has installed an application for remote users. I configured the RDS as:

  • RD Session Host Server: Host's FQDN, port 3389, Access to Unlisted programms: No
  • RD Gateway: Server's public IP, Logon method: NTLM, Use the same credentials for both RD Gateway and Session Host authentication, Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses: yes
  • Digital Signature: No
  • Common RDP Settings: Share Clipboard, Allow font smoothing, Colors 32bit
  • Custom RDP Settings: authentication level:i:2

Now here is what I am experiencing. If I run the .rdp file inside the intranet after succesful logon, the application starts up fine. If I try from outside (plain simple internet, no VPN) I get to the logon screen, I enter my domain credentials, I get to a status "Starting" and finally getting the following error message:

RemoteApp Disconnected: Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway Server is temporarily unavailable.

Obviously there is something going on with the RD Gateway service. I checked under services to see if there is an entry of it and started but couldnt locate it. At the moment I am stuck and would appreciate some help to troubleshoot further.

FYI regular remote desktop on the server works fine, the remote users group is OK as they can connect with remote desktop fine. Remote hosts run either windows 7SP1 or 8.1 fully updated.

Co-sign own enterprise certification authority (Windows 2012 R2)

Hi,

I found this topic https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/d03f1ad9-94cf-4fac-8655-ea7eb4345bae/cosigning-a-2008-r2-certificate-authority-for-internalexternal-remoteapp-users?forum=winserverTSdealing with the same issue. I haven't found a clear answer if this is possible and if so how to perform these steps. I have my own enterprise ca up and running well. Of couse "my" own ca certificate is only trusted within my own domain. It's not trusted outside. I also found this hint from the system "A stand-alone or enterprise CA-issued certificate must be co-signed by a trusted public CA that participates in the Microsoft Root Certification Program Members program". This sounds like I could use my enterprise ca certificate requested & issued by a trusted provider (so instead my own in the root position one of the trusted ones). Is that possible?

RD Gateway problem with publishing to Internet

Hi

I have configured a RDWeb+Host server.  I have also configured a separate RD Gateway server.  These are all 2012 R2.

Certificate is wildcard and everything works fine internally.

I have published the RD Web server on the Internet (Port 443 - demots.domain.com) only.  The public FQDN points to RDweb server inside.  Gateway server is NOT accessible from outside

Am I doing this wrong?  I can't connect from outside

possible bug : Remote Desktop Rejects non-remoteFX clients.

OK Scenario:

Host : a Windows 7 Enterprise with SP1, configured as a VM on a 2012R2 Virtualization host with RemoteFX d3d adapter component AND RDP8.0 installed and configured per this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2592687

Client : a Windows 7 Professional SP1 with an updated client (Shell Version 6.3.9600, Control Version 6.3.9600, Remote Desktop Protocol 8.1 Suppoerted)

problems:

1.the windows 7 host used to add log entries into the RemoteDesktop-TSCore log Admin section upon clients connecting, per this article:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff817575

but it is not doing it anymore after upgrading the RDP to 8. no signs of Event ID 2 in the Microsoft-Windows-RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS/Admin

2.the client is unable to RDP into the host if the "speed" of the client (the "experience" tab) is set to anything but the "LAN 10MB". it used to work with "Automatically Detect" settings before, until I manually changed it per the above technet article to activate RemoteFX (read the square at the middle-bottom of the article).now, even if I switch it back to automatic speed detection or some other speed, it goes just up to the "Estimating speed and quality" connection phase and then suddenly quits. the only way to get to the remote desktop is to set it back to "LAN 10" manually.

the Remote host just has some "warnings" regarding the previous (non-LAN) attempts, saying that the client is not capable of RemoteFX so RDP Graphic module will be used; no "errors". but as I told you, the client simply quits after the speed estimation.

WTSVirtualChannelOpen fails on Windows Server 2012, identical code works fine on Windows Server 2008 etc.

We try to open two Virtual Channels with the same name on a Windows Server 2012 with two WTSVirtualChannelOpen(WTS_CURRENT_SERVER, WTS_CURRENT_SESSION, "name") calls from within a single process.

While the first call succeeds, the second call always hangs for 10 seconds and returns NULL. Afterwards called GetLastError returns 0x80004005 (unspecified error).

This problem only happens on Server 2012, the same code works without problems on Server 2003 and 2008, using the same client.

Firewall is disabled (personal and domain).

•Did anything change between Server 2008 and Server 2012 that would cause such an "unspecified error"?
•Is there any way to get more detailed information on the cause of the error (e.g. activate logging on WTS... functionality)?
Any answers are appreciated ...

Andreas

Hi there,

Is there any documentation on how to manually install RDS on Windows Server 2012 R2 without using the new standard deployment wizard  scenario? I would like to manually configure and install RDS Farm components but still be able to view the overall deployment.

thanks

Published App not running

I currently have a Windows Server 2008 TS box running with RemoteApp. I installed the app and created a RDP file for the client to connect to. When I publish basic "calculator" everything works fine. When I try to publish one our business core applications, I receive the following message.

"The program did not start on the remote computer. For assistance, contact your administrator."

Does anyone have an idea on when I should start troubleshooting? Thanks for your time always.

Disable Windows+L screen lock on remote desktop session for a specific user.

Disable Windows+L screen lock on remote desktop session for a specific user.  After extensive search, I think the only way to handle this specific task is with a keyboard hook:

Microsoft KB #226359

I'm looking for a charatable individual to provide a step-by-step on how to implement this specfically:

1) Remote desktop session for a specific user (not all users, not for the terminal server)

2) Prevent the Windows+L key from locking the session (which requires user to log in again)

3) Platform is Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server

Registry hack to disable all Windows+{key} shortcuts is not adequate.

Thanks in advance for your help on this.  Sincerely, Dan

RDS VM's crashing 0x50 PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Hi,

We have a new Dell R820 running Server 2012 Std as a Hyper V host, with 6 Server 2008 R2 Std VMs. 2 of the VM's are RDS servers, one with 25 users (RDS1) and the other with 10 users (RDS2). Since go live approx 3 weeks ago, the 2 RDS VM's have been crashing. RDS1 approx once a week and RDS2 approx 2or 3 times a week. Some crashes will leave a dump file, other crashes will not. From initial look at the dumpfiles, I have the following info:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50)
Invalid system memory was referenced.  This cannot be protected by try-except,
it must be protected by a Probe.  Typically the address is just plain bad or it
is pointing at freed memory.
Arguments:
Arg1: fffff680003b9268, memory referenced.
Arg2: 0000000000000000, value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation.
Arg3: fffff800016f2dbc, If non-zero, the instruction address which referenced the bad memory
 address.
Arg4: 0000000000000002, (reserved)

They have referenced aAcentral.exe (a program from our Practice Management software APS), chrome.exe twice, and iexplore.exe.

None of the other VM's (2008 DC, file/print, mailserver, sql server) are crashing, just the 2 RDS VM's, which restart themselves, then users log back in, obiously losing any work they had open.

Can anyone help me out as to the cause and how to stop it?

Publish WS2008 R2 Remote App using WS2012 R2 RDS

$

Is it supported to publish remote app from the Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 RDS Session host using Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS Session Collection? Also using Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS gateway etc?

I know this is working, but is this also supported scenario?

RDP clients login causes delay on server

$

Hi

We have a Windows 2008 R2 server that is DC and TS server for remote clients. When each user logs into server via RDP, server freezes (for all logged on users and admin) for about 10-15 second, also CPU is set to 100%. This happens every time when user logs in. We have found that if we disable all mappings (printers, local drivers etc) on users RDP there is no delay, server doesnt freeze. So it has to be something with this, but we need to set users to map printers and clipboard into TS server.

We have applied all patches, also there is no other impact on server, everything is working fine, except this freeze when users RDP into server.

Any ideas what is causing this and how can we solve this ?

Thank you in advance

Mike

Security package error when remoting

$

A few of our users receive the following error when attempting to establish a remote desktop session.  "Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because a security package error occurred in the transport layer."  For most users, connections are not a problem.  The environment is as follows:

Remote Desktop Session Host - Windows Server 2008 R2

Remote Desktop Gateway - Windows Server 2012 R2 (SSL certificate has been installed and chain verified)

Client computer that cannot connect - supports RDP 8.1.

The users that cannot connect are behind a firewall at a customer facility.  The do not have trouble connecting to normal secured web sites through port 443.  I'm having trouble trying to determine if I have not configured something correctly on the gateway or if the customer has blocked traffic in some way that does not allow RDP.  Since the transport should be HTTP (instead of RPC over HTTP), I don't think this should be a problem.

Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

RD Gateway Manager - Unable to read RD Gateway Server Settings

$

I'm trying to install a Remote Desktop Gateway into my domain, but I am running into a serious road-block... when I load RD Gateway Manager to configure the service, there is nothing to configure because it won't load my server into the console. When I try to connect to it manually, it returns the following error:

"Unable to read RD Gateway Server Settings"

There are no errors or warnings in Event Viewer. I can verify that C:\Windows\System32\tsgateway\rap.xml exists and is readable. I can verify that Network Policy does have a TS_CAP_01 policy and it is enabled. A valid certificate was applied during setup (and I've also tried choosing ask me later).

I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the role service (including manually verifying that the policies are removed). I also have this working on another domain server, so I'm at a loss for what to look for... How can I resolve this so that I can finish configuring the service?

Windows 2012 R2 printers showing twice (and unable to set default printer)

$

Hello,

I have a problem that will not just go away. I have two Windows 2012 R2 servers: one with RDS installed for 30 users with an appointment application and one "back-end" server were print queues and database are running.

So basically, users can connect to network printers by clicking on a link that points to the "back-end" server. In Windows 2008 R2, this is so simple but in Windows 2012 R2, I am experiencing tons of issues (with both V3 and V4 drivers). By the way, printer redirection in RDS (remote desktop) is disabled and forbidden by GPOs. I am listing the issues here to see if someone experienced them before:

1. After a disconnection between the printer and the RDP session (the servers are in a remote site as the printers are local and printing through a site-to-site VPN tunnel as they are all IP printers). Example: a power failure will set a particular printer at "offline", which is normal and eventually, it comes back online. But then, the problem starts: the printer "loses" it "default printer" status and none of the printers for a specific user are showing as default printer in his printer list. If I try to set again the desired printer to default, it is already "set as default" but the green "tick" is not showing on the printer icon and printing fails.

2.  When the above happens, I usually try to delete the printer from the user session and reconnect to it. But then, it is even worse: the specified printer is now showing "twice" in the list of "device and printers" for a specific user while working OK for another (when you right click the printer, you see two instances of it). This is interfering with our main application and a specific user session is non functional. A printer will also show in the "unspecified section"

3. Even a bigger problem: if I delete a particular printer from a specific RDS user session, the same printer disappears for all other users using that printer. So each time I try to fix a printer in one user session, I can expect a myriad of issues with the other users.

4. The only way I found to fix this issue (so far) is by rebooting both servers at the end of the day and after power recycling the printer exhibiting the issue. The only other thing I could try (never tried it yet) would be to delete the affected user profile and recreate it on the RDS server. But I do not know yet the consequences of that action (will everyone else lose the defective printer mapping as well???).

5. This issue doesn't seem to be driver or brand related as I had the issue with many printers of different brand. Both servers are virtual under Hyper-v (physical hosts are also Windows 2012 R2) and are running the latest integration version.

If anyone has experienced this issue, please let me know what you have to have done to resolve it. My next step is escalating this to Microsoft.

Thanks.

Benji.

Can't RDP From Windows 7 to Server 2008 R2 SP1

$

Hello,

We have a server 2008 R2 SP1 with all the latest updates installed as of today (11/12/2014) that runs terminal services.

We started upgrading our office computers to windows 7 x64 and now unable to RDP into the server. They were able to RDP for a few days and now are unable.

Once you hit connect, it asks for a username & password, and then it says configuring remote connection and after about 15-30 seconds it just says can not connect to remote computer.

I am able to RDP from windows 7 into 2003 servers.

Windows XP Computers can RDP just fine.

I went through all the articles that had the updates that needed to be removed/reinstalled for RDP to work and none of them fixed the issue.

This has been going on since Monday 11/10/2014

Any advice or assistance is greatly appreciated.

How to create auto logon for several local machines on a domain?

Having to log-in to a computer via passwords consistently is a bit of an inconvenience and one more thing to remember along side business. Can I set the Windows Server 2003 up to have which ever users selected to log-in without a password on their accounts.

Error : Remote Desktop Cant connect to the remote computer for one of these reason

recently our security team advised us to enable NLA on remote desktop for all the server and set the encryption level to FIPS Compliant.

after i made these changes on the server i am not able take remote from my client machine, windows 7, windows 8.1 and also from windows 2008 r2 server. getting the following below error :-

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network

Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i have checked my RDP client version and all are supported with NLA but still i am not able to remote in. windows firewall is disabled completely at server side.

if i disable NLA at server end, i am able to remote in successfully, but i wanted the NLA to be available for security reason.

any guidance will be really helpful on this.

Cannot see local drives in remote desktop

I am using RD to connect from a 2012 server to another 2012 server. I have configured RD to show remote drives from my local 2012 server. When i RD into the remote 2012 server i cannot see my local drives. The local drives show up fine if i RD into a 2003 or even some other 2012 servers. Is there a security setting in 2012 that prevents local drives from showing up when you rd into them? If not do you have any idea how i can resolve this issue so i can see my local drives on the machine I RD into?

Thanks for your help
