MSOSYNC.EXE hanging - Windows Terminal Services, Citrix XenApp 6.5

$

Hi!

First a little about our environment:

Windows 2008 R2 with XenApp 6.5

Published IE10 and Office 2013 thru Citrix

Office 365 with mail and SharePoint

When we access SharePoint through Word the Microsoft Upload Center (MSOSYNC.EXE*32) kicks in. That is expected for handling caching. We have applied two GPO's for handling caching.

Open documents from Office Document Cache first - Disabled (Go online at first attempt)

Delete files from Office Document Cache - Enabled (Delete cache when closing application. (This works))

After we close Word (only Word running on TS), we are logged of the terminal server as expected. However, the MSOSYNC.EXE*32 will still be running for approx. 25 minutes before this process is closed and a complete log off is finished.

Why are MSOSYNC.EXE*32 hanging? We did not edit any documents, just opened and closed... Therefore, the sync should not have to upload anything to the SharePoint site. Any suggestions?

Prevent Certificate Export

When Connecting to a RD gateway the client checks the server certificate. If the certificate is not trusted the client cannot connect, but he can install the server certificate in his local store and the he will be able to connect.

Is there a way to prevent clients from installing certificates this way?

Terminal Server 2008 setup

Hi All, first time question. Hope this makes sense.

As a project at work I was asked to set up a terminal server \desktop environment on Windows server 2008 SP2, I cant user RDS in server 2008 R2 because of a known bug with roaming profiles.

I set two servers up, one with the session broker service and terminal services and the other with just terminal services, I defined a farm that contains both servers and the session broker service takes care of logins and disconnected sessions. I did have DNS round robin set up for resiliency, if one server went down it then goes to the next available. However, my manager requested that instead of using that I should bin Round Robin and set up NLB, i did. I installed the NLB feature on both servers, assigned both machines as hosts in the new cluster and confirmed connectivity through the new cluster virtual hostname.

That was when the problem started, I know that NLB and the broker service run at different levels of the OSI model and thus gave me a double login every time i logged on via the virtual cluster hostname.

To get around this, I removed the session broker host service from the NLB cluster, it now has only one host, I do intend to provision another terminal server and make that a host in NLB, however, taking out the Session Broker service means i don't get a double login, the login request goes to the NLB host, and then gets passed to the Session Broker service, this then gets sent to the session broker service and a user gets one login and goes to the desktop.

Is this an acceptable enterprise solution? To my mind, NLB passes the login request to the single host, this then passes that login info direct to session broker server and the user only sees one login and gets to the desktop. Okay, so at the moment I have only one server host defined in NLB, but will address that when i create another Terminal Server and add it as the secondary NLB host.

So in a nutshell, I have NLB, it connects to one Terminal server, for the moment, and a Session broker server that sits away from that but processes login info successfully. Is this a valid setup? Could someone comment? Or have they had to do this and have some pointers for me?

Thanks in advance.

RD Web Printer Mapping/Re-Mapping Time

I am running Server 2012 and my Clients are launching an RemoteApp from the Work Resources RD Web Access page in IE. Everything is working fine in this regard.

The problem is this. The first time the users launch the RemoteApp the printer maps in about 6 seconds which is good. If they close the RemoteApp and then Reopen it within the next 2-3 hours it take about 1 minute and 6 seconds for the printer to map. After 2-3 Hours of being disconnected it goes back to mapping in 6 seconds.

The "RemoteApp Session Logoff Delay" in Group Policy is set to "Immediately".

That being said if I logon using a regular RDP connection to a Remote Desktop and Logoff in the normal fashion then re-launch the same RDP Connection, the printer maps in the normal 6 seconds.

If I force "Log off" a RemoteApp RD Session through the Server Manager Connections window and then log them back on immediately after, the printer maps in the normal 6 Seconds.

I have checked both the Active Sessions in Server Manager and the Printer Management Window to make sure the RD Web Sessions and its associated printer have disconnected but there is something hanging around in the background when an RD Web Session RemoteApp is closed that Server 2012 sees as still active. In short when the users closes the RD Web RemoteApp it is not doing a complete Logoff of the session for more than 2 hours.

I have checked every setting in GP I can think of but can't find anything other than the "RemoteApp Session Logoff Delay" that indicates it would change this behavior. Please advise if I have missed a setting or I have found an actual bug that requires an update to correct.

I'm a patient person but for a cashier to have to stand in front a paying customer waiting for a printer to map so they can have their receipt, an extra minute can be a long uncomfortable time.

RDP ClientActiveX Has Been Disconnected

We have a Citrix XenApp 6.5 server (we"ll call it Citrix01) running on Server 2008 R2 that is kicking users off their remote desktop connections when connecting through a Citrix Access Gateway server. They get a message saying the Administrator has disconnected your session. This is logged in the event viewer on Citrix01 when it occurs:

Event ID: 1026
Source: TerminalServices-ClientActiveXCore
RDP ClientActiveX has been disconnected (Reason=3)

I've found lots of other reason codes for this error, however, I'm hoping someone can tell me what Reason 3 is as I have not been able to find it. If you need anymore information regarding this error or the environment, please reply and I'll get it to you.

Thanks in advance,

Remote Desktop Protocol 8.0 update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (KB2592687) breaks context menus (right-click and ribbon dropdowns) for RemoteApp Office 2010

Within a day of installing update KB2592687, I had reports of context menus appearing for a fraction of a second then disappearing on RemoteApp session with Office 2010 applications, including Outlook, OneNote, and Word.  On most clients, this problem was not observed at the beginning of a session.  The delay varied from minutes to hours.  Based on internet searching, this appeared to be an office plug-in or install corruption issue.  After repairing Office, modifying registeries, reinstalling Office, and deleting user profiles, I tried removing the KB2592687 update, which only seemed related to the problem because of when it was installed.  Removing KB2592687 appears to fix the problem, based on the last 24 hours.  No one else seems to be having this problem, or they haven't discovered this new cause.

Server: Win 2008 R2; Office 2010 x64

Clients: Win 7

All computers have the latest Microsoft updates via WSUS.

How can I programatically configure Remote Desktop Services Session Host in Windows Server 2012 without a domain?

$

We build turn-key solutions for customers, and for years, we have been doing this. What I am looking for is a script-based method of performing the following actions:

  1. Install Remote Desktop Services Session Host
  2. Configure some "standard" settings: IdleTimeOut, Disconnected session behavior, temporary folders, encryption levels and such

My understanding, with w2k12, is all of this must be done to a Session Collection.  I have a PowerShell script that performs the install of Remote Desktop Services - Session Host, Connection Broker, and Web Access (Add-WindowsFeature RDS-RD-Server, RDS-Connection-Broker, RDS-Web-Access) while NOT on a domain, and now I am stuck trying to configure it.

When testing with this server on my production domain, I can get the following command to run: ($strFQDN is populated in the script)

New-RDSessionDeployment -ConnectionBroker $strFQDN -WebAccessServer $strFQDN -SessionHost $strFQDN

Once off of the domain (which is a requirement for customer server builds, not allowed to be on my domain, or any until it is at the customer site) I cannot get this command to function as expected. I am presented with the following output:

New-RDSessionDeployment : Validation failed for the "RD Connection Broker" parameter.
<ServerName> Unable to connect to the server by using Windows PowerShell remoting. Verify that you can
connect to the server.

The answer provided here (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverTS/thread/cbffb2d4-ff9d-49ee-a9ce-a60db2262422) is simply a cop-out, as to why this was so poorly designed. Yes, more people are moving to the AD world. Why in the world could that be used a justification to just completely bend over your smaller customers? Or, customers that provide a value-add on your products? But, I digress...

Thoughts? How can I accomplish this VERY simple task WITHOUT putting this system on a Domain? (Well, very simple in Windows Server 2003/8/8R2)

Server 2012 Connection Broker Disconnecting Sessions in Kiosk Mode

$

I am currently experiencing an issue with an install of Server 2012 and trying to provide a pooled windows 7 desktop that is operating in a kiosk mode (to be used by members of the public).  The solution has a bit of software that controls the user logon and sits in front of the windows logon.  The user enters a pin number and this software will then log into windows with a standard account and then log them out when their sessions expires.

This solution works great if I connect directly to the virtual machine I can connect and leave it there for hours with no interaction and the software waits.  However when I connect it through the connection broker if I leave it without any user input from the keyboard or mouse the session disconnects after approximately 6 minuets.  If I log into the software the solution works perfectly.

In the session broker logs I see my session come in and get directed to my VM and then when the timeout occurs (6mins) I see the following event logged

Event Log : TerminalServices-SessionBroker

Event ID: 819

Description:

This connection request has timed out. User could not log on to the end point within the alloted time. Remote Desktop Connection Broker will stop monitoring this connection request.

Does anyone know if their is a setting for the connection broker to change this timeout that is programmed somewhere?

Terminal Server in DMZ for limited access to Internet resources - user authorization

Hi

For security reasons we need to deploy following scenario (sorry for Paint):

So, users from Intranet should login to terminal server in DMZ for limited access to Internet. The main question is - how should they authenticate on terminal server? RODC, ADAM or maybe TS must communicate with ADDS server directly? Best practices?

RDS 2012 Session Host User Profile Disk configuration

$

Is it possible to change the default size of the user profile disk?

I have deployed a collection with user profile disks redirected to a network path, all works well.  However the default size as dictated by the UVHD-Template is 200Mb - which seems large for a default profile.  I have tested a few logons to our RemoteApps and mounted the UPD's to check the contents and at most there has been 10Mb of data contained - though with that said the UHVD for the users is 250Mb...!

Therefore I would like to change the default size of the UPD from 200Mb to something more reasonable, for example 50Mb.

Any advice would be useful

thanks

Rich

MS-APP-V for TS V4.5 SP1

While downloading software for TS Servers, I have downloaded MS-APP-V for TS V4.5 SP1 which I have not been able to install. If you do the installation it says 'Microsoft VC++ SP1 Redistributable is required. I downloaded the same but the installation of this package fails with no reason given.

1. What does this CD /image contain ?

2. How can one get this installed? It seems to contain some update for Application virtualization for Terminal Services Update. Ubfortunately there is no Readme file or documentation on the CD.

I am installing this on WS2012 std version on a virtualized server.

Delegate rights

My company is in the process of migrating from XenApp to RDS 2012. Is there any wan in RDS 2012 to delegate administrative rights to collections? For example, we have a group of admins that need to manage certain collections (publishing/unpublishing apps, adding/removing servers, managing user sessions, etc) without having full rights to the entire RDS environment. We did this real easily in XenApp. These admins are administrators on their session host servers.

WMI repository not updated with new configuration unless rebooted

Hi,

Running Windows 2012 Standard Edition, trying to steer the RDP-Tcp (protocol) to only listen to one specific adapter instead of the default "all network adapters" using a script. The problem is that I cannot get the code to become instantly updated, rather I need to reboot to make it work which is not my cup of tea. Once I reboot everything is working, but I dont wanna boot.... code example follows below; (written in PowerShell)

#Connect to the WMI TS repository:

$objWmiTerminalServices = (Get-WmiObject -Namespace "root\Cimv2\TerminalServices" -query "SELECT * FROM Win32_TSNetworkAdapterSetting"  | Where {$_.TerminalName -eq 'RDP-Tcp'})

$result = $objWmiTerminalServices.SelectNetworkAdapterIP("10.63.240.24") #<-- The IP / Adapter I want RDP to listen to....

$result.ReturnValue #<-- Returns 0, meaning IP was valid according to MSDN documentation....

#Reconnect to object to verify that config was accepted...

$objWmiTerminalServices = (Get-WmiObject -Namespace "root\Cimv2\TerminalServices" -query "SELECT * FROM Win32_TSNetworkAdapterSetting"  | Where {$_.TerminalName -eq 'RDP-Tcp'})

$objWmiTerminalServices.NetworkAdapterName #<-- First time, going from the default configuration of all network adapters, this works, but not back and forth...

#Lets revert back to all network adapters beeing bound to RDP

$objWmiTerminalServices.SelectAllNetworkAdapters()

As soon as I reboot, connect to the WMI TS repository again, the configuration has been updated. Tried only restarting the service but with no success... any clues? Also tried making the configuration stick using the following code once I have changed the RDP to be bound a specific adapter, see below;

$objWmiTerminalServices = (Get-WmiObject -Namespace "root\Cimv2\TerminalServices" -query "SELECT * FROM Win32_TSNetworkAdapterSetting"  | Where {$_.TerminalName -eq 'RDP-Tcp'})

$objWmiTerminalServices.SelectNetworkAdapterIP("10.63.240.24")

$objWmiTerminalServices.psbase.put()

Any clues on how to make the configuration sticky directly without reboot, and how to broadcast the change to all parts of the OS directly? Take care dudes...

Error Creating Server 2012 Personal Managed VDI Collection

I am trying to create a personal managed VDI collection on Server 2012. I am following the steps at http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2012/10/31/windows-8-windows-server-2012-pooled-virtual-desktop-infrastructure.aspx to create my collection. I am using a sysprepped template, and I am able to get all the way through the wizard. It goes and exports the template just fine. It also creates the two virtual desktops just fine. I see them on my Hyper-V servers, they can be powered up and work just fine. However, the status of the collection is Not Valid. When I look at the task status for the collection, I see that both of the virtual desktops have the following status: "Failed: The virtual machine is not ready for the virtual machine-based desktop deployment. I was able to find the following error in the event logs: "VM host [host] failed to execute VM Provisioning operation [Task: To perform post processing actions at VMHostAgent:] for virtual machine [vm-1] in pool [test_pool], Error: [Error code: 0x88130221.]" I tried searching both of the errors and I could not find anything for them. I have tried using the same template and I created another collection and I get the same errors. Does anyone have any suggestions to either find out more about the errors, or how to resolve them?

Use Easy Connect is grayed out in Windows 2012

Since Windows 2012 doesn’t Remote Control/Shadow, we would like to use Remote Assistance/Easy Connect to control remote session to support our RD users. But whenever I try to run Remote Assistance, the Use Easy Connect is grayed out.

I have enabled “Peer Name Resolution Protocol” (PNRP) as show the screenshot.

The IPv6 is enabled. All 3 Windows 2012 servers have the same issue and all my Windows 7 and 8 computers don’t have this problem when using Remote Assistance. What could be the problem?
