Only the administrator account is able to log in to terminal server (2008 R2 Standard) either from within local network or from remote connections outside office.

Have 5 CALs installed but no other user is able to gain access from anywhere to the server. When trying to login as the other users, system partially logs in when an message pops up saying, "Windows could not connect to the System Even Notification Service service.  Upon clicking ok/cancel, the connection is broken.

Remote Desktop Services - Redirection of additional supported devices is disabled by policy.

I have a Windows 2008 R2 server running the Remote Desktop Services role.  Whenever I reboot or restart the "Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector" service , I get the Event ID 36 error:
Redirection of additional supported devices is disabled by policy.

I verified that no such policy exists using RSOP.MSC.  I looked at the following location:
Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Device and Resource Redirection\Do not allow supported Plug and Play device redirection

This is set to "Not Configured".
For fun, I've tried both enabling and disabling this setting (rebooting after each change), and it had no effect on the problem.

Additionally, I verified that the setting was disabled within the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration utility:
     RDP-Tcp -> Right-Click -> Properties -> Client Settings
          Redirection
               Supported Plug and Play Devices
For fun, I tried this setting both enabled and disabled, rebooting after each change, but this had no effect on the error.

Clipboard redirection does work.

I also followed all the instructions on the following article without success:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee890928(v=ws.10).aspx

In the same domain, there is a Small Business Server, and there it works.

I hope anybody can help me on this issue, because for now my only option is reinstalling the server, and I would rather not because I cannot afford downtime that long.

Thanks!

RD Connection broker 2012 R2: disable multiple session per user

My configuration

All servers - Windows 2012 R2.

One Connection Broker. Two collections with several RD Session Host servers. One Web Access server.

There is policy for RD Session hosts:

Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session: Enable

But from different RD clients I can launch two sessions on different RD session host servers from the same RD collection.

How to disable multiple remote desktop sessions per user per RD collection?

User cannot install Windows Store apps when using User Profile Disk

This problem persists from Windows 8 and 8.1. When using Remote Desktop Services with full VDI and User Profile Disks, users are not able to install Windows Store apps properly. The app might work during the install session but after the user logs out and back in, the app is listed in the start menu but no longer works. The only solution is to delete the app and disable the store as I have been doing in Windows 8.1. This is no longer an acceptable solution as we will need to install apps and side-loading is not an option that I have time for. Users need to be able to install apps and keep them up to date by themselves.

Remote Desktop Fail Over

Hi Everyone,

I don't know if I'm being dumb but I'm looking for a fail over solution for Remote Desktop services. I'm using Windows Server 2012 R2. I am aware of the Remote Desktop Connection Broker that gives you best of both world for load balancing and fail over to an extent and would love to use it but my problem is that we are using HP Thin Client which is very dumb and can't use WebApp. Now to use the RDCB in HA you will need to publish your collection as a WebApp.

DNS Round Robin doesn't do the trick as it takes to long to realize the server is down or unavailable and Network Load Balancing is very limited to load balancing and might over load a server. I have looked into Failover cluster but my knowledge is very limited with it and it doesn't seems to support the RDS roles for fail over.

How can I go about making my RDS servers highly available without using WebApps?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Hi,

I am on a domain and have 4 different servers on that domain and i need to add to this domain the computers on other building.

i need to install a VPN on my office and i need to know more about VPN Server Configuration on Windows Server 2008 R2 and

Windows 7-8 VPN Clients.

But my question is, can i use as a VPN Server the Windows Server 2008 R2 already configured with RDS for remote access?

Do i need special licences or something else to connect 2 different buildings trough a VPN with Windows Server 2008?

What do i need for this?

Disable Windows Update for non-admin end-users

Happens that end-users are able to install Windows Update on our Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS farm.

This can be harmful, especially as the are prompted to do so at login.

How can we remove ability to install Windows Updates for non-admins?

How can we suppress prompt to install updates at login?

Many thanks to help fixing severe problem for us.

No Templates Available When creating VDI Collection in Server 2012 RDS

I have deployed Hyper-v on a 4 server cluster and have added the VDI deployment role to the servers and added the 4 Hyper-V servers and VDI Hosts to the RDS deployment.

I have installed both Windows 7 and Windows 8 on 2 separate Generation 1 VMs with the following specs:

-2 GB RAM, single 100 GB HD for each, Integration tools installed, sysprepped with /generalize /oobe

-the PCs are shut off.

When I try to create a desktop collection (either personal or pooled), there are no templates available.

I successfully tested VDI collection creation on a single host server, but cannot get it to work on the Hyper V  cluster.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Windows Server 2012 R2 showing a blue screen and no desktop!

Hi

We have a Windows Server 2012 Standard R2 which is used merely as a file server. This runs on a Lenovo TS140 ThinkServer with 32GB RAM and RAID 5.

The server just shows a blue screen with nothing else, no desktop or any text whatsoever, bar the mouse cursor on the screen. The mouse cursor moves by moving the mouse. Pressing Alt-Ctrl-Del will not launch the Task Manager. CTRL-Esc will not launch the"Start" menu, nor does the "Windows" key on the keyboard.

The server is actually functional and works, as everyone can access our "Access 2013" database which runs on SQL Server 2014 Standard. Pressing the "Caps Lock", "Num Lock" is also responsive. I don't really want to reset the server by powering it off and back on again, as I'm not sure what the consequence may be.

Has anyone come across this anomaly?

Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

Server 2012 R2 CALs on a Server 2008 R2 Licensing Manager

We are replacing an old Win 2003 Term Server with a new 2012 R2 Term Server. We already have a licensing server on Windows 2008 R2. Can I add the CALs for my new 2012 R2 Term Server to my existing Licensing Server? If not, can I make the new Term server its own licensing server?

RDS Licensing issue

I have an issue with the licensing of RDS session host server.

I've set-up 2 servers, A has RD Session host and RD Licensing, B has RD connection broker, RD Session host & RD Web Access. I don't use the gateway. On Server A, I've added my licensing pack (RDS per user CALs) and the server is also activated.

In the licensing diagnoser I get the message that the Licensing mode for the RD host is not configured. But when i look in the deployment properties of the server, there I have RD licensing "Per User".

Server has been rebooted more then once after configuration and also in the registry,  "Licensing type" is set to 4.

What am I doing wrong?

User unable to launch remote app unless logged into RDWeb with another user's profile

I have a user who logs into a 2008 R2 RDS deployment and gets an error when trying to launch a particular remote app that requires authentication through the application.

If someone else logs on the RDWeb from the same PC, the user is then able to launch the remote app. If this user who is having the issue logs into another user's PC and then logs into RDWeb, she is unable to launch the Remote App.

My line of thinking is that it has to be something with her user profile. There is a folder redirection policy that redirects certain folders. I have deleted the user's profile and am in the process of having them try again.Any thoughts?

Configuring a Virtual Desktop Collection of WS 2012 r2

Hi guys

What I want to ask is kind of tricky, or maybe I do not know.

I have a production environment in a University with Windows 7 and Windows 8 collections for students who wnated to access computers from Labs or Library.

Now, they asked me to configure the same Virtual desktops collections for Server 2012 r2.

I told them and I did a RD Session Host but, they told me that what they want is to have 30 "servers" in a collection with basic configs, no AD, no DNS or roles to teach the students how to configure those things, and no relation with the Production AD.

Can you help me telling me an option to offer them, because despite RD Session host the only thing that I have is create 30 VM with WS2012 and make a regular RDP to each one.

Thanks

Cannot connect to Pooled Collection

$

Here is the scenario:

Created a standard deployment on a non-production server to test VDI capabilities. Server 2012 R2 Datacenter (OS)

Services installed:

RD Connection Broker, RD Virtualization Host, RD Web Access

Pooled VDI collection created successfully, given static IPs and can be pinged on my network. The image created has a standard Admin user profile that our department will use for local admin rights. Connection to the collection is successful and I can see who is logged in. Only can access the VMs simultaneously if I physically choose "log-off" for the domain user profile when disconnecting.

Once choosing log-out, the VM is turned off and shut down. A VM can connect to this open session now through the /rdweb portal. However, if I leave it, the session will be logged into and says as active on the local admin account we created. (This I am viewing through the "Connections" portion of Server Manger -> RDS -> Collections. On the VM, I have chosen to not automatically start to try and avoid this but that did not solve the issue.

How do I make it so that the session is not locked and logged into by the local account used when setting up the VM (the Local admin account)?

The issue we get when connecting to the session is "There are non available computers in the pool. Try connecting again, or contact your network administrator." I have uninstalled and reinstalled the connection broker role. Also, have recreated the collection.

Cheers.

Server2012 R2 RD Gateway serial port redirection 2-3x slower than plain RDP

$

Hi Everyone,

We are noticing a dramatic decrease in Serial port redirection performance using Server 2012 R2 Terminal Services Gateway to connect to Server 2012 R2 Session Hosts.

When bypassing the gateway and accessing via VPN serial port speeds return to normal and take 2-3 longer if using the Gateway.  This occurs with several types of serial devices and not isolated to one particular driver or vendor.

We have tried all of the various tweaks mentioned out there including the various netsh commands and registry tweaks (Server2012R2 does not have a TermDD key but we tried it anyway) these have made little to no difference.

We have enabled full RDP8 with UDP and connections through the gateway claim excellent connection speed and UDP is enabled.  Except Serial redirected devices still take 2-3x longer using the RD Gateway with full RDP8 and UDP.

The only noticeable improvement is to not use RD Gateway and just use straight RDP. Since the slowness is not present when the Gateway is not used, we can determine it is not a hardware or driver issue.

Has anyone found a solution for this?  It has come up before in the forums with 2008R2 RD Gateway as well with no resolution to the source of the problem.

[RDS2012] Assign desktop icons and start menu items (metroview) to specific users.

$

As you probably know Windows 2012 does not have a classic Start Menu anymore. To replace that we now have the Modern UI Start Screen. In fact, as soon as you enable the desktop experience feature on a Windows Server 2012 (RD Session Host) server the Modern UI Start Screen is launched upon logging on.

So when running Remote Desktop Services on Windows Server 2012 that raises the question, how can we control the Start Screen the way we would usually control the Start Menu up until Windows Server 2008 R2. With Windows Server 2008 R2 a method that was commonly used (although it has it’s CON’s) was the redirecting the Start Menu to a central location. And by using Access Based Enumeration on the share that hosted the Start Menu, end users would only see shortcuts they were authorized to see, based on group membership. The same goes forthedesktopicons.

My question: what isthemost convenient way to assign desktop icons andstart menuiconsto specific users/ usergroups?Redirecting to a central location, using GPOorsomethingelse? Is it possible to use GPO to assignshortcutstospecific security groups?

Please your advice orexperience.

Thanks.

Server 2012 R2 RDS sessions keep disconnecting over internet

$

We are connecting to a hosted application which we are experiencing continuous disconnects.  We have verified through continuous network monitoring on both ends that the network is not experiencing any significant outages or latency which would cause the disconnects.  We have asked the vendor for the configuration of the hosted solution information provided is that.

Application is hosted on a Virtual server and hosted on both Server 2012 R2.  running Terminal Services.  My background is a citrix admin.  But it is my understanding that there could be a front end software loadbalancer that has configurations of timeouts.

Can anyone provide me some areas to look to try to pin point this needle in a haystack?

Remote Desktop Services Users randomly lost connection

$

I am running RDS on one Windows 2012 R2 server for all RDS services. I have a group of users from other company using web RDS to access the published application. Randomly, they all are getting disconnection on the same time and reconnect to RDS server.

Since I have narrowed down this issue only happened to one particular company, they said it could be the group policy from that company hitting the computer when it runs the refresh. I have asked that company to run a GP results and couldn't find if there is anything related to RDP connection like enable or disable RDP.  I also checked on the computer local policy that the registry for fDenyTSConnections is 0.  The clients are running on Windows 7 Pro machines.

Any suggestion?

UPD Appears to Be Broken

RDS 2012 R2. We have 1 RDS gateway with 1 connection broker and 2 session hosts and we are using UPD. We publish apps using remoteapp. When users use a published app, they often get a temp profile. When an admin logs in to the actual server (not using a published app), they to get a temp profile. Here is the event logs:

I know there are a bunch of threads here and places on the internet that are filled with this sort of problem. I have tried the suggestions that were applicable to us but still get this issue. Any ideas or any other places to look to see better what is going on?

Cannot connect with Windows 10 Internet Explorer?

$

Hi folks,

The RDS 2012 R2 RDweb solution requires ActiveX to allow passthrough authentication. Obviously the new Edge browser doesn't have ActiveX so doesn't work, however when I attempt to use Internet Explorer under Windows 10 it won't connect:

"Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error occurred on the remote computer that you want to connect to. Contact your network administrator for assistance."

The error comes up immediately after starting the application. The same configuration works fine for Internet Explorer connections from earlier incarnations of the Windows client. Any ideas?

I am using Web Application Proxy (WAP), which requires the ActiveX solution to passthrough HTTP authentication headers. I'm not sure whether or not it would work without WAP in the picture.

Interested in your experience!

Thx,
Simon.
