Term Services 2012R2 Multiple session collections on one Broker Server

I have built a Term Services deployment  for my sales department and has been running very well for 6 months. I am adding a second session collection for my finance department and am not sure how to handle DNS entries for my remote clients. I do not understand how the broker will send users to correct collection. Do I setup a DNS round robin entry for each session collection?

If so that has caused issues before with older deployments as the connection gets cached and when server is removed from deployment it causes issues with users trying to connect.

Any help would be appreciated.

Windows Server 2003 license challenge

A new customer of ours have a Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services server. Now there's a problem to access this server, because "The terminal server has exceeded the maximum number of allowed connections."

Turns out that the license model is "per device", and now that we accessed this server from three different computers (though with same user account), we bound up three per device licenses, and this prevents regular users to access...

And I don't know what to do! In Windows Server 2003 I am unable to revoke CALs (can't do it from the Windows Server 2012 license manager either), and it seems impossible to just terminate the issued licenses, and they are issued to us for quite some time.

Surely there must be a solution to this. Yes, we will replace this old server etcetera, but we need a solution right now, and so I turn to you, if somebody has a way out of this...?

User Profile Disk Corruption

Hello,

We had a serious issue with UPDs in our environment and I'm really just testing the water to see if we were extremely unlucky, or there is inherent problems with UPDs.

The scenario is as follows:

We have a single RDS server. The Collection on this server is configured to use UPDs which are stored on a separate server. One morning, we had a full BSOD on the RDS server due, we think, the a lack of available RAM. In any case, after the RDS server rebooted from the BSOD, we discovered that all users who were connected to the server when it fell over were being logged on with a temporary profile. On closer inspection, we observed that there was a c:\users\%username% folder for all of these users, but when they logged in, they were actually being dumped into a c:\users\%username%TEMP folder instead.

We consulted the Event Viewer where we observed a ntuser.dat error for every single user. Of course the ntuser.dat resides on the UPDs and it soon became evident that every single user who was connected to the RDS server when it fell over ended up with a corrupt ntuser.dat hive.

Any thoughts? Has anyone seen anything similar to this? It was a very time consuming restoring all the UPDs from the previous night's backup and I am worried that the UPD concept is perhaps not as resilient as I would have thought.

Thanks in advance.

How can I configure Windows Authentication with a fallback to Forms-based authentication?

Right now our RDS environment is configured to use WIA, which works great for everyone using a domain-joined PC. However, there's frequently a need to connect to our RDS from non-domain computers. This presents a rather ugly login prompt from WIA.

How can I configure WIA authentication to fall back to forms authentication if WIA fails?

Right now, this is a priority for our RDS Web Access Server, but I'm working on moving all of our web apps behind a WAP, so I'd like to know how I can use WAP preauthentication the same way, so we can fall back to forms authentication for SharePoint, OWA, and Dynamics CRM as well.

Disable Download of Files in Remote Access

Hi,

We are setting up a Windows 2012 R2 File Server for file / folder sharing within a LAN. We have some users who will be using Remote Desktop Connection from their Windows 7/8 PCs outside the LAN. All these users will be sharing a set of files and folders stored on the server.

Our client wants to disable the ability to download a file to the local desktop using (Cut/Copy & Paste) or the Ctrl + C / Ctrl + V option. So, users can only read a word/excel file on the server but not take it home or copy the data.

My client has mentioned repeatedly that they were easily able to do it in Windows 2003 Server. I have not used it so I cannot comment. I have told them that it is not possible in Windows 2008 or Windows 2012 R2.

Can we do such a thing? I suppose once a user has read access to a file/folder, he can easily copy and paste it on his desktop.

I understand there are DMS/ECS solutions like SharePoint, etc. But can we accomplish this security feature using just the Windows 2003 or Windows 2012 R2 OS capabilities?

Thanks for any insight or help.

Best Wishes,

Viv

Remote Application question

Hi,

I don't know if this is the right place for this, but here it is...

I'm trying to add a application to my RemoteApp program list.

Here is what I did :

In "Publish RemoteApp Programs" I clicked "Add..."

In the "File Name" I put "\\SERVER.DOMAIN.local\d$\FOLDER\FILE.exe"

and I get this error:

<Quote>

you must specify a file from the rd session host server

SERVER.DOMAIN.local by using the UNC path; for example

\\SERVER.DOMAIN.local\c$\path\filename.exe.

If the problem persists, ensure that the following Windows Firewall exceptions are enabled:

1. File and Printer Sharing (SMB-Out).

2. File and Printer Sharing (SMB-In).

</Quote>

This is AFTER I:

1. opened the Firewall on BOTH servers (the RemoteApp AND the server where the file is located)

2. Mapped the foler to "Z" on the RemoteApp server

So I did a Bath file pointing to it, now it is working, but it is not 100% a RemoteApp!

explanation :

I'm running a program that needs Pervasive, so I installed it on the server, but not on my PC (for the test)

When I run the RemoteApp for the web on my PC, the program is looking for the DLL files for the Pervasive on MY PC, and not on the server...

Please help, Thanks

RemoteApps Accounting

We have RemoteApps published via RD Web access in a single Windows 2012 R2 server.

External users are accessing those RemoteApps over internet.

CIO is asking us to give him some reports and accounting.

For example, who is accessing what RemoteApp? in which time? etc.

In general we need statistics of how those RemoteApps are being used and by whom.

How we can get such reports and accounting information?

Please help.

Offically reset RDS 120day grace period

$

Dear Forum Members,

We have faced a situation where we taken over a Remote Desktop Session Host server (all roles on that and only one server) which 120 days timer has been reset 2 times by the previous administrator. We have forced the owner to buy the correspondig linenses to use the service normally, but now 4 days are left and it is impossible to order the appropriate licenses in such a short period of time.

My question would be: are there any methods to "offically" reset the 120days timer again in order to have some time and chance to make this server licensed? I found a few articles about how to do that, but I'm not sure even it can be done three times (for example normal server can be rearmed three times):

RDS cluster node not accepting connections

$

Good morning everyone. I have a three node RDS cluster where one server is not accepting connections. The node holds the licensing, session host and web access roles. The other two nodes are taking connections correctly but when a user gets directed to RDS1 the following errors comes up in server manager:

1306: Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed to redirect the user.
Error: NULL

1296: Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed while getting redirection packet from Connection Broker.
User : username
Error: Element not found.

802: RD Connection Broker failed to process the connection request for user.
Farm name specified in user's RDP file (hints) could not be found.
Error: The farm specified for the connection is not present.

I rebooted the server twice. Last week we had an issue where the DB log was full causing issues but that has since been corrected. Any help is much appreciated . Thanks.......

Connection Broker vs. NLB?

$

I currently have three 2008R2 RDSH virtual servers, clustered & using NLB.  They've been extremely stable and performance has been good.  I  need to replace this with a 2012R2 cluster.

As I'm reading about the Connection Broker service in 2012R2, I'm not really sure why I'd want to use it instead of just sticking to NLB?

To avoid a single point of failure, I'd have to add a second Connection Broker server, and that would require a connection to our SQL server.  It seems like it complicates our environment without really buying us anything.

I could see going that route if I had 10 or 20 RDSH servers in a farm, but even three is overkill for us.  Any thoughts as to why I'd want to rely on the Connection Brokers instead of just sticking with NLB?

RemoteApp and Desktop Connection

Hello,

I have setup RDS to publish apps to internal users.  Users will only be able to launch application thru "RemoteApp and Desktop Connection", and no web interface is setup for external use.

The issue that I have is that when user launch application from "RemoteApp and Desktop Connection", they are being RDP into RDS server and user has to click OK button before the application can launch (Please see screenshot).

How do I implement SSO so that "RemoteApp and Desktop Connection" will capture user logon information on the local pc and automatically log them on to RDS server

Environment:

RDS broker/session/web server are on a single 2012 r2 server.

Thanks

RDS license server appears to be configured, still showing unconfigured in licensing diagnoser

So I have one server set up as RDS Connection Broker / session host.  I have a separate RDS license server for that.  It's all working fine.  Now I want to add another server as a standalone session host server.  I configured it for RDS, and it has the session host and connection broker roles (do you HAVE to have a connection broker with 2012R2?)

Then I added the existing rd license server using the set-rdlicenseconfiguration command and specified my rd license server.  This all seemed to work fine.  When I look at the deployment page, RD licensing is listed with the license server, and if I go under tasks and deployment  properties, under RD licensing I see the license server and it's listed as per user (the other session host is per user as well).

However, when I log into the new session host, I still get the message that the server licensing mode is not configured.  And when I go to tools > Terminal Services > RD Licensing Diagnoser, I show "licenses are unavailable for this Remote Desktop Session Host server and RD Licensing Diagnoser has identified problems for the RD session host server".  It shows 0 licenses available, and shows that the licensing mode for the RD Session host server is not configured.  At the RDS license server information section it shows 0 license server specified.

I've rebooted both boxes since, and I've tried deleting the reg key for the grace period, as I saw that as a possible problem when using per-user licensing mode.  It resets the grace period, but still keeps counting down now from 120 days.

What am I doing wrong?

W2K8R2 RDS Server - Licensing

Hello All,

Hopefully I can convey my question accurately enough.

I have a remote customer test server whose grace period has ended.  We can no longer RDP to this station - error message:

The remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license.

Please contact the server administrator.

My question is, shouldn't I still be able to RDP to this station with at least 1 session for administration or is it because the RDS role installed eliminates that option and depends on a licensing server?  The TCALs have been installed also per User.

I replaced the person who deployed this station so I imagine the license server was never specified during configuration.  I know that Automatic detection was removed in R2.  What are my options for accessing this station remotely?   I was able to connect to various consoles via a W2K8 Standard server running Terminal Services, but when I tried to specify a license server this route, it failed.

Thin Client without a virtualized Windows, Is that possible?

$

Is it possible to have all contents rendered in a Windows 8.1-Pro + NVidia Card based PC?

Is RemoteFX the only way to have that including GPU acceleration?

Is Mandatory to have virtualization?

I want to have a thin client connected to a host that renders all the contents. The client just have to "paint". All that I have read refers to use a virtual GPU and can't see why is no possible to use the real GPU if just one user is going to be connected remotely to the windows machine.

Thanks in advance

HA Connection Broker does not detect failed session host

$

I have a deployment of two Windows Server 2012 R2 hosts, each running the RDCB service in an HA arrangement (the SQL database is on a separate server).  In addition each host is also running the RDSH service.

The RDCB address is load balanced via DNS round Robin.

If a user creates an RDP session on a host, then disconnects, and then the host with the "disconnected" session becomes unavailable (i.e. disconnected from the network), the broker will continue to attempt to redirect the user to the existing disconnected session even though the server is unavailable.

I have tried adjusting the Registry settings as per this post:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/050ed3c2-1356-4c69-8337-1be735494670/session-broker-heartbeat-solution?forum=winserverTS

But the problem persists.

New RDP connections work fine, with the remaining broker creating new sessions on the remaining host.

This post:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/757c747f-b390-4f0a-aeb2-493400f6029a/windows-server-2012-r2-session-broker-offline-server-detection?forum=winserverTS

mentions that co-locating the RDCB and RDSH roles may be problematic, but this seemed related to new sessions.  My new sessions are working fine.

Can anyone shine a light on the problem?

Surely the Connection Broker should be able to detect failed Session Hosts ?!

I have installed all roles and do have a collection (QuickSessionCollection - created as default)

The License diagnoser sees the licenses, I have created users and made them members of all the relevant groups, Domain Users, Remote Desktop Users as per the collection properties.

I have rebooted the server but are still only allowed two connections, the host server is configured to allow new connections

I still have the problem of only 2 connections allowed

Best alternative for UDP profile disks in RDS Farm 2012R2

$

Hi,

We have a 2012R2 RDS Farm deployment consisting of the following:

1x AD ,1x RD Broker / RD Web Access,1x RDGW, and 3x RDSH. All of the servers are running on 2012R2.

We tried to implement the user profiles using UDP files but our attempt was unsuccessful due to an unresolved problem with vhdx and temp profiles. We know there are still alot of options out there inlcuding (roamin profiles, folder redirection and third party softwares...)

We would like to know what is our best alternative option for profiles considering simplicity and performance on the RDS farm.

Best regards

Nima
