Can't deploy a Virtual Desktop Collection - no error shown

Dear all,

I'm trying to create a Virtual Desktop Collection as a prototype for a future project, but I'm unable to deploy the collection. My enviroment is Windows Server 2012 R2, with separate machines for the broker and the hyper-v server.

We tried deploying a Windows 10 image and now a Windows 7 image (both Professional version). The deployment starts and is able to create the template, but then fails without specifying the reason.

The log shows the following error:

<Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">

- <EventData><Data Name="arg1">DVBasico</Data><Data Name="arg2">DVBasico</Data><Data Name="arg3" /></EventData></Event>

In general view, the message is:

Any ideas - I've enabled the RDMS UI Log according to this site but nothing usefull is recorded.

Kind regards,

Files cannot be deleted on a UPD inside of Session Host

Hello,

I have an RDS deployment where I have the following machines:

Domain Controller 1

Domain Controller 2

RD Connection Broker / RD Licensing Server

RD Gateway Server 1 / RD Web Access 1

RD Gateway Server 2 / RD Web Access 2

RD Session Host 1

RD Session Host 2

File Server (SMB share for User Profile Disks)

The problem is every time the a user remotes in and it gets into Session Host 1 the user cannot delete any files on that user's profile, but if the user logoff and login again an it's assigned into Session Host 2 then the user can delete files. I have check the permission on the SMB share and they look the same that it was before this issue appear.

Have anyone has this issue before?

Thanks in advance for any help.

RD Web Access Icons and RemoteApp Feed Issues (2012R2)

$

Hi there,

I have set up an RDS 2012R2 RemoteApp/ RDS proof of concept for a client. The environment is as follows:

Domain and Forest functional Levels: Windows 2003

2DCs: Server 2008R2.

1 RD Managment and Licensing Server (2012 R2)

1 RD Gateway (2012 R2)

1 RD Broker (2012 R2)

1 RD Web Access (2012 R2)

4 Session hosts split up as follows:

RDS1 and 2: For RemoteApps. Collection is called RemoteApp

RDS 3: For Full Desktops. Collection is called Full Desktops

UAT: For User Acceptance Testing. Collection is called UAT1 and is configured for remote apps.

All 3 collections are enabled to allow users from the RDS_UAT group to access them. The RDS_UAT group consists of myself and 4 other testers. Within the collections (for testing):

RemoteApp collection: all apps are configured to be visible to users in the apps_sg security group (myself only). There are several folders which house the apps.

UAT Collection: All apps are configured to be visible to the RDS_UAT group. These all reside in the UAT Apps folder.

I have 2 issues:

1) A user who is not a member of either security group can log in and see all three collections. To test, I created a new user (user A) who is a member of only domain users. The user could see all the folders and collections. When the user tries to run the application, he is denied permission. Simillarly, the other members RDS_UAT group can see the apps they should not be seeing in the RemoteApp collection.

2) The remoteapp web feed (when added to Windows 7 and windows 2008R2 machines) shows all the applications, even applications the user does not have access to. For example, for user A, I can see all the applications but not access any of them. Furthermore, the folder structure in RD Web Access is lost and all apps are listed alphabetically from top to bottom across all three collections.

Can anyone please advise as I can't seem to figure out why this is happening? I can't see anything in the event logs that would indicate any issues. There was one error on the broker (Remote Desktop Connection Broker server could not enumerate the targets for the provider named NULL from the database) which I resolved by adding the broker to "Windows Authorization Access Group" as per https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/aef50c99-0f0e-4da2-bc4c-d5435692cb8b/server-2012-rds-remote-desktop-connection-broker-client-failed-to-redirect-the-user?forum=winserver8gen

Thanks,

HA

Setting up a windows server with RDS, what licences do i need?

Hi Folks,

sorry if i will be asking stupid questions. I am pretty new to windows server operating systems, so far i have only used linux for servers, and windows 7 for the occasional game.

I have a program, that i need (want) to run on a terminal server, and have 6 clients accessing the program (via RemoteApp if possible). As far as i have understood, i will need the following Licenses for that: 1 Windows Server license (e.g. 2012 R2), 6 CALs for accessing the server, 6 RDS-CALs (really? i need an extra license to use the RDS?) and of course the os licenses for the clients (they have windows 7 & windows 8 installed, this should suffice right?).

My questions are:

1. Is this correct or do i need more/less/different licenses? Is it ok if i buy OEM-CALs? I find cheaper offers for them on the internet. Is there any drawback when using them?

2. I haven't gotten that far with my research yet, but it seems that i need some kind of an extra server (or virtual instance) as a Domain Controller. Do i really need that? Will i need an extra license for that?

3. Is there any way to test this whole setup before buying all those licenses? Or do i need all the CALs and so on from the beginning on? I have access to Server licenses (for the server os) from my university, but of course i would not be allowed to use them for use in a non-educational environment. I could use them to test the setup first though, but i can not find CALs in my university's microsoft store.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my (beginner) questions!

RD Gateway Bypass and Windows 10

Hi,

I have an RDS 2012R2 environment with the option to bypass the gateway for local connections enabled. It works great until you try and access from a Windows 10 client. We have Azure MFA securing the apps and this is kicking in inside the network for windows 10 clients only, 7 and 8\8.1 clients are bypassing the gateway correctly and are not receiving the additional auth step.

The only item I see in event viewer on the gateway is this

The RD Gateway client supports HTTP proxy protocol but connected using Legacy RPC-HTTP.

If you authorise the MFA request it functions correctly.

I'd appreciate any advice or assistance with this.

Thanks

Installing of Remote Desktop Connection Broker fail because of firewall rule

Hello,

We have changed our Remote Desktop Connection Broker to High Availability, but there was still only one Remote Desktop Connection Broker. Therefore the next step was to add a second Remote Desktop Connection Broker.

I added the server by wizard and the installation started, but failed with error message (original/translated):

Die Windows-Firewallausnahme für die Windows-Verwaltungsinstrumentation konnte nicht auf "SRV2.FOB.LOCAL" erstellt werden.

The Windows Firewall exception for the Windows Management Instrumentation failed on "SRV2.FOB.LOCAL" are created.

You see, we have a german installation. However, I see on the server, all new services were installed without problem. All services, like internal database started and are running. If I try the wizard again, it stop exactly with the same error message. I tried a restart of the server with no help. Windows Firewall is running and I see six firewall rules for Windows Management Instrumation. That is the same number with the other server which already have "Remote Desktop Connection Broker".

We use only Windows Server 2012 R2 for Remote Desktop Services. There are no older systems. By the way, our DC use also Windows Server 2012 R2 - forest and domain level is the same.

Please for help.

Remote Desktop Connection using IPv6 address and custom port

$

Is is possible to use an IPv6 address to connect to a Remote Desktop Session host (Terminal Server) that is listening on a custom port?

Using an IPv4 address, the syntax would be 10.0.0.1:45001 where 45001 is the custom port.  But since IPv6 addresses have embedded colons, it seems like the colon used to distinguish the port from the IP address is mis-parsed.

This question comes up because my company is using DirectAcess, which gives ISATAP IPv6 addresses to computers on the corpnet (LAN), which register them in DNS.  When an RDP client on the LAN tries to connect to an RD session host, also on the LAN, using the RD session host's FQDN, it apparently resolves the FQDN to an IPv6 address first because the RD connection dialog hangs for about 15 seconds with a message "Initiating remote connection...", and then connects using an IPv4 address.

Optimize Start Menu Cache Files

Hi,

We have setup a brand new Remote Desktop Services farm with 10 Session Hosts for 200 users.

Now we see the Task 'Optimize Start Menu Cache Files xxx(SID)' for about 200 times on every Session Host server.

These can be deleted but they return whenever a user logs onto a specific Session Host server.

How can this be prevented?

This has been addressed in another thread (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/how-do-i-permanently-delete-this-task-scheduler/0fd8f7a0-c182-45c1-ad42-f02d768cb295), but the solution there would be to stop the Tasks individually of stop the Task Scheduler. Both are obviously not what I, or anyone else, want.

Is Easy Print being used/Slow Printing speeds

$

Hi

I have had some users complaining of printing speeds since we moved over to an RDS 2012 environment. Users use Office 2013 in RemoteApp and local printers are redirected to their RDS session. On each Session Host in order to install the correct printer drivers I mapped 1 printer per printer model from the print server. I then removed the printer as the driver is installed. So each session host has the print driver installed but no printer instances. I verified the drivers are there by installing the print server role - opening print management and looking at the drivers. I have checked the Session Host driver name matches the client driver name exactly as per this article.

I have a group policy: Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first - Set to disabled

What I have noticed though is that if I open Devices and Printers via a Terminal Server/RemoteApp session, go to printer properties on a redirected printer and click on the Advanced Tab, the driver being used shows up as Remote Desktop Easy Print. Is this a red herring or does this mean that the redirected printer is in fact using the Easy Print driver? The odd thing is, if I go to Printer Preferences, All advances print settings/trays/finishing is correct as per printer model.

2012R2 / Windows 7 MSTSC concurrent sessions behavior

$

Hello,

Our Environment is as follows:

2 RDS hosts, 2012R2
1 host running Gateway, Web Access, Connection broker, 2012R2

Client: Windows 7

The client has two .rdp files on the desktop. I saved one from RD Web so that I got all the config rows in there (workspace ID et cetera) and then made a copy, changing only the user name in the second copy.

Here's the issue:
1. The user connects one session and logs in to the full desktop
2. The user minimizes the session and connects using the second .rdp-file, which has another user name specified
3. A new MSTSC windows connects to an RDS host, but instead of the saved username, the user is reconnected to the first session which was minimized in step 2.
4. Looking at the first MSTSC window, there's an information box letting the user know that he was disconnected from the server

So, in short: Connecting a second RDP session to the same collection/workspace ignores the saved username in the rdp file and instead reconnects to the first, live session.

Question; is this the expected behavior in 2012R2 RDS?
What we are trying to do is connect two concurrent sessions with different user accounts. Is there a setting we can modify to meet that goal?

If we connect the first session, then right click and modify the rdp-file, change the username, and then connect, we get two concurrent sessions with different accounts (the goal scenario). Can't figure out why this exact procedure changes the result.

Remote Desktop can't connect to VM

We started using Hyper-V a few months ago. Until a few days ago, everything is working great. We have 2 physical hosts running Windows Server 2012. Each physical host has been running one VM (Windows Server 2008 R2) which is replicating to the other host.

We have added another virtual machine. It works great except Remote Desktop Connection cannot connect to it. When I try, I get the standard message:

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network

I've checked everything I can think of including:

  • VM is allowing remote access. To be sure, I even turned it off and back on.
  • There is no firewall blocking anything. To be sure, Windows firewall is turned off.
  • Remote Desktop CAN connect to the other VMs including the one running on the same physical host.
  • Everything else on the VM seems to be working. IIS is running there and web pages come up nicely. File access is good too.

There are 2 differences between this new VM and the other ones:

  • This OS is Windows Server 2008 (not R2). The other VMs are R2.
  • This VM was not created from scratch. I used Sysinternals Disk2vhd to generate a VHD from an existing physical machine and then configured a new VM to use that VHD.

I'd be very grateful for advice on how to get RDC working.

RDMS (Remote Desktop Management Service) will not start Windows Server 2012 R2 single server AD DC RDS

Hello All,

I have poured over many pages over many hours trying to find an answer to this. I have deleted the GracePeriod registry key. I have managed to get licensing working via group policy, but cannot get the RDM Service to run. As a result, the Remote Desktop Broker will not start and is not found in the Overview tab. Supposedly it is absolutely possible to have AD and RDS services fully functional on this Server 2012 R2 DC. Does anyone have any suggestions to get the service running, please? Thank you in advance for your time!

Internet Explorer 11 cause high CPU utilization on multiple sesstions

$

We are seeing IE11 use upwards of 25% of CPU on 2012 R2 RDS sessions.  The websites seem to very that cause this.  Some have Flash, some have Java but we will find this occur several times a day.  I might also mention when it occurs it is NOT all IE 11 instances.  It is usually just one or two instances.  One site that I have identified is, any product page from this site:

http://www.hivissupply.com/ (ex. http://www.hivissupply.com/gss-safety-8505-hivis-3-in-1-ripstop-utility-safety-parka.html).

I am seeing this on all hosts regardless of where the profile roams.  I was hoping maybe there was a tuning guide for Internet Explorer 11 on RDS or a best practice to maximize performance or to more efficiently run in a multi session environment.  Or if any of you are aware of this issue how I can resolve it.

Thank you for your help,

Ryan

Slow login to RDS 2012 RemoteApp

$

Dear experts:

We have a small deployment of RDS2012 with a Web Access/Gateway/Connection Broker on one server and Session Host on another. Logins with Remote Desktop through the firewall directly to the Session Host are fast, but initial login through RemoteApp are extremely slow (1 minute+).

We are using Ericom Web Access as an alternative access method to the specific application and that is working fast as well.

I have already searched a lot and made sure that "Bypass gateway server for local addresses" is disabled. We also have a valid certificate on both servers and both servers have access to the Internet in order to be able to validate the certificate (I have read that this may cause a delay).

How can I troubleshoot the connection process to pinpoint the root cause? I know the problem should not be Group Policy or UAC because once the connection is passed on to the Session Host it opens quickly. Something is being delayed on the Gateway server but I do not know how to find the cause.

Please help.

Thank you!

Joerg.

User Profile Disks with Windows Search

We have 2 RDS Servers (2012R2) and work With User Profile Disks

We use outlook cached mode (Outlook 2013 SP1) because the link to our head office is to slow

The problem is that the outlook search isn't working properly.

Every time the users logs on, search indexes are recreated
This proces never finishes because the server is under a constant load, therefore search never works as it should.

In eventvwr, we see this error alot:

Crawl could not be completed on content source <winrt://{S-1-5-21-xxxxxxxxxxxx}/>.

Context:  Application, SystemIndex Catalog

Details:

The parameter is incorrect.  (HRESULT : 0x80070057) (0x80070057)

Any ideas? :)

RemoteFX - Adaptive encoding stack

Hello All,

I am using RDP8.1 [from Windows 8.1 - Dell Thin client - Z90Q8] to connect to Windows 8.1 VM hosted in hyper-V (Windows server 2012) with  NVIDIA Quadro 4000 GPU. Remotefx is enabled on the host VM. UDP and auto network detect is enabled on the client. Followed recommendations in below articles

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/rds/2012/08/23/remotefx-for-wan-overview-of-intelligent-and-adaptive-transports-in-windows-8-and-windows-server-2012/

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/rds/2013/10/31/remotefx-h-264-codec-improvements-in-windows-8-1-and-windows-server-2012-r2/

http://microsoftplatform.blogspot.in/2011/03/how-to-enable-and-test-remotefx-on-rdsh.html

The thin client has AMD Radeon 8400 Integrated Graphics card, which is capable of H264 hardware decoding.

While running 3d benchmark tests (https://unigine.com/products/benchmarks/heaven/) and viewing H264 videos through VLC player on the host, in high speed LAN network, I am able to see host side rendering.

The article, https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/rds/2012/08/06/remotefx-adaptive-graphics-in-windows-server-2012-and-windows-8/talks about RemoteFX offloading all image decoding to an AVC/H.264 hardware module on the client side based on network conditions.

When I switch to 1Mbps, 250ms latency, 5% latency network, I don't observe client side decoding. Modifying group policy  to server scalability or network bandwidth didn't have any impact. Event-viewer logs show remotefx is enabled, the RDP connection bar also shows low bandwidth.

Is there any specific criteria for remotefx to switch to client hardware H264 decoding?

Thanks,

Licensing Issues with Remote Desktop Licensing and Citrix XenApp 6.5

$

Dear technet forum,

My Company has a Terminal Server Farm with Server 2008 R2 running for a Customer. We have about thirty XenApp Servers and one Licensing Server up.

The Licensing server has the Remote Desktop Licensing Role installed, as well as the Citrix Licensing Role.

The farm is running well and without any licensing errors on the clients side, which are a mix of private laptops/I-Pads and ThinClients on site.

The problem lies within the remote desktop licensing manager console: We have 1050 Device CALs installed, but only about 450 get used and only by the private laptops/I-Pads and some older Fat-Clients. The Thin-Clients one the one hand somehow do not draw a license but show no problems with connecting on the other hand.

I looked through a ton of technet articles and also some Citrix configuration articles to look for errors in the configuration, but i found nothing wrong.

I would appreciate every help/tips i can get on the topic.

Greetings and thanks in advance,

Michael H.

Shortcut to C on PCName

Hi guys

We moved from Citrix hosted by a 3rd party to internally hosted RDS 2012 - deployed via RemoteApp. In Citrix users setup shortcuts in Windows File Explorer that pointed to their local c drive.

Example: \\C on Client\users\joe.bloggs\desktop

This meant in Citrix they could quickly copy from Citrix environment to local desktop. They have tried to do the same in RDS 2012 and initially the shortcut works fine but it seems upon log off and next log in the shortcut has broken. On closer inspection the shortcut path looks like this:

\\tsclient\C\Users\joe.bloggs\Desktop

I guess the tsclient in the path is a variable that keeps changing per session? Is there a fix for this? I realise that users can just copy and paste between RDS and local but users are used to having convenient shortcuts. If not I’m sure the users will get over it :)

Thanks
