Lossless compression for remote desktop

Hi,

We are developing healthcare applications. One of the deployment scenario which we were thinking was to provide access to clients through a terminal session.

For this we are planning to run the viewer applications in a Windows 2012 R2 server and the clients would take a remote desktop to this server.

Since the field is healthcare, image quality is of concern.

So before deciding on the solution I wanted to know if the compression used in Remote Desktop is lossless or lossy.

If the compression is lossy, is there a way to make it lossless, so that there is no drop in image quality?

Creating Desktop Collections Hang : Server 2012r2 STD

Hi,

Im having issues publishing VDI assigned / pooled desktop collections.

There are three servers, lets call them server 1, 2, and 3.

When I try to either add to, or create collections, the process hangs with a "pending status" on server 1 and 3. Server 2 is always successful.

This just started happening. I have published 3 collections successfully prior to this. I have not made any changes (that Im aware of) to the servers.

I have turned on Debug logging and cannot find any relevant information. I am bound by an ITAR restriction and will have to scrub any logs that I share. But there are not many.

As far as i can see nothing is really being reported, its as if the system thinks the publish process is moving along, but its not. Interestingly enough after about 24 hrs I will cancel the task and then I will see an error in eventvwr that says "operation failed, reason - Canceled by user"

I have checked permissions on the drives and I have checked the export locations. I have gone as far as rebuilding the master template from scratch, even though server 2 publishes successfully.  I have changed the export location and the results are the same.

Im trying to get this working because my company wants to see a more native MS solution to VDI.

Any advice would be grateful and if I have missed any crucial information I will gladly respond with what I can.

I attached a couple screen shots to show you what it looks like and the RDS roles that are installed

UPDATE: MSDN will not allow me to attach images until my account is verified.

UPDATE:

I was able to pull a specific warning from eventvwr, Im not sure if this is related or not
"RD Connection Broker could not complete a remote procedure call to the Hyper-V server"

Error 0x800703E3 when copying from Windows 10 to RDP session

Situation: 1 Windows 10 PC is connected to a Windows 2012 R2 server through RDP. Drives are included.

When copying a file from local disk to serverdrive it is fine with files upto 10Kb. Bigger files freezes the screen and RDP connection is lost. Error 0x800703E3 appears. The other way around works fine. It has nothing to do with antivirus running on Hyper-V as mentioned in most articles. I think we tried everything. By the way, other workstations don't have this problem.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Diagram of traffic flow in RDS 2012 r2 farm

Can somebody point me at diagrams of traffic flow in an RDS 2012 r2 farm, including RD Web, RD Gateway, RD Broker and RD session hosts? For both internal and external clients.

Can not disconnect session (pooled virtual desktop).

It's a 2012R2 server with win7 pooled virtual desktops. Disk usage of these desktops is somewhy high. They'd used all space at the volume and lost profile disks. After reboot and incrising that volume i've found that the vms where not rebooted but "saved". Users even said there were no reboot. After relogin they managed to work again except one.

I've restarted his vm in collection manualy but server manager still shows the session of this user. I can't disconnect it getting erros "Unable to disconnect session 147 on host.domain. WTS API failed". PS commands return errors too. Can i disconnect this session somehow or reboot of the server is the only option?

RDP Property: usbdevicestoredirect accepts only GUID definitions

Hi.

I've been trying to get USB redirection to work with rds, using usdevicestoredirect:s:HARDWARE_ID but it doesn't work.

Using usbdevicestoredireect:s:{GUID}  works.

Hardware ID: USB\VID_0525&PID_A4A7&REV_2499

GUID: {4d36e978-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

AFAIK, Hardware IDs should work too. Do I have a problem in my RDS setup ?

Thanks

RemoteFX Windows7 - which updates exactely are required?

Hi

RemoteFX documentation states that Windows7 SP1 is the minimum requirement for it to work.

But my tests revealed that simply installing Windows7, then applying the SP1 update is not enough. It starts working once Windows7 is fully updated.

I wish to know which exact updates are required, on top of SP1 for RemoteFX to work.

Thanks!

RDS 2012 R2 - Idle sessions not ending

I have an application that is getting errors when users try to launch, and I think it's because it needs to be logged off after they're done using it before they can re-open.

This lead me to check the sessions and I learned that the Disconnect sessions are not being logged off!

See the setting on the left is set to End a disconnected session at 5 mins, but on the right, a user is in a disconnected state at 7 mins and counting.

Is there something else I need to configure? Should I apply a GPO as well to enforce log offs?

Pooled Desktops and Temporary Profiles

I am having an issue with temporary profiles on my Pooled desktops. My farm is all Windows 2012 R2 with two connection brokers configured for HA and 3 Hyper-V hosts. Increasingly my users are reporting being logged in with a temporary profile. I have profile disks configured for the collection and they usually work correctly. The UPDs are stored on a Windows 2012 R2 SOFS cluster.

I have noticed that when the users report the temporary profile, the UPD in question is shown as being open on the file server (Get-SmbOpenFile | Where-Object {$_.Path -like "*UserSid*"}). That command usually returns two entries, I assume that is because of the SOFS having the file open on both nodes. The user is not logged in when running the command, so my assumption would be the files should not be open. The fact that they are suggests that Hyper-V cannot open the .VHD causing the temporary profile. If I close both with Close-SmbOpenFile it usually resolves the issue.

Because it is a pooled desktop, it is reverted to a clean state at log off making viewing logs client-side nearly impossible (especially since users tend to log off immediately when presented with this issue). My question is how can I determine the root cause of the issue and, hopefully, eliminate it altogether? Also, will implementing UE-V help to alleviate this issue in the future or will it simply compound it?

Trying to block direct access to a Remote Desktop Server that is in a load balancing cluster.....

We are having issues with users connecting directly to Remote Desktop server(s) with the RDP client instead of using the DNS name of the load balance cluster.  By them circumventing our load balancer it is potentially causing load issues on certain remote desktop servers and prevents us from managing maintenance windows on a server by server basis.  Our load balancing appliance is a Coyote Point e350 which we are using to load balance port 3389 to several Windows 2008 R2 Remote Desktop servers.  There is no firewall between the client network and the server network.  We also are not using session broker.

Is there anyway to prevent this behavior natively with Windows?

Update screen size on tablet rotation using AxMSTSCLib

Hi,

We are creating a custom rdp client using AxMSTSCLib for use on a MS Surface 4. We are having a challenge resizing the view when the tablet is rotated. When using the regular RDP the server size adjusts appropriately to display correctly on the client. in the article located at https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/enterprisemobility/2013/12/16/resolution-and-scaling-level-updates-in-rdp-8-1/ it states, "One of the changes we’ve made as part of RDP 8.1 is the addition of a new message that can be sent from the client to the server to dynamically update the resolution inside the remote session to match what is available on the client without the need to do a complete reconnect of the session," which is verified by my previously stated observation.

How can we implement the same messaging to achieve the same results using AxMSTSCLib in a .net application. I can't seem to find any reference on this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

TS RemoteApp - Change keyboards

Hi All,

I have published a translation software application via TS RemoteApp. How do I configure it so the user can choose which input keyboard language they would like to use?

Is it something to do with the "Default Profile", a GPO setting, a user account setting?

Many thanks

Christoph

Thanks Christoph

Accessing Local Resources Are Extremely Slow On Server 2012 R2

Hi

We Have recently implemented server 2012 R2 Remote desktop services for using remote app.

the point is the applications are working fine in an acceptable speed but from time to time i have some wired situations which i will explain in other posts. The most important and bold problem is accessing local resources of each user's computer like their C Drive on the remote apps.

Example: When they open their customized email system through remote app and want to attach a file which reside on their C drive, accessing the C Drive on the Use's computer is extremely Slow. Almost impossible to work. The worst part is accessing the C drive, After it is opened transferring the file like copy or ... is acceptable.

Does any body have any idea where do i have to start fixing this problem.

Remote Desktop licensing mode is not configured - Will stop working in 8x days - Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi team, I'm running into problems with licensing. I get an error prompt upon login:

Remote Desktop licensing mode is not configured
Remote Desktop Services will stop working in 8x days. On the RD Connection Broker server, use Server Manager to specify the Remote Desktop licensing mode and the license server.

What I need is:

5 users to be able to Remote Desktop into my 2012 R2 server via the Remote Desktop tool.
Really have no idea how to make this works.

In addition, under Server Manager - Remote Desktop Services - Overview, it prompts below message:

- A Remote Desktop Services deployment does not exist in the server pool. To create a deployment, run Add Roles & Features Wizard and select the Remote Desktop Services Installation option (that's all the message).

FYI, I am trying to deploy 1 server solution to have this Remote Desktop Service running - is this possible?

Thanks......

Session disconnecting immediately

Hello,

I currently have a test environment setup for learning and I'm experiencing an odd issue. When I RDP from one Server2012r2 to another the session disconnects immediately with an error stating another user/session has connected. There are no other users with access to my test environment that could be attempting a logon. I checked the event log and it shows my session connect, then disconnect and then another session connect with the attempt originating from 127.0.0.1. This is currently occurring on the Domain\Administrator user. It does not occur on any other user and since I mainly use the Administrator account when I'm testing different setups this is quite annoying.

I have tried spinning up another VM, joining it to the domain and enabling RDP and the issue follows when using the Administrator user on the domain on a fresh install.

Is there any way to see what application/service is creating the logon session?

Edit: I also tried changing the port used for RDP and the issue followed to verify it was not a port issue.

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

I am running several 2008 R2 RDS servers in a HyperV failover cluster. It has been determined that we need to enable IP Virtualization. Follow the directions and it does not work. Have searched for hours for a solution but nothing works.
