Whitelisting solutions?

$
0
0

I'm looking at some of the various whitelisting solutions out there for endpoints.  Carbonblack, Airlock Digital, etc...

We've had a few clients hit by ransomware despite user education, group policies to prevent files running in temp locations, Antivirus, etc...

Fortunately we usually have continuity things in place, BDR's and such, so restoring files isn't a problem, just an annoyance.

But I have a few terminal servers I'd like to limit.

I could go the route of making an allowed application list via group policy, but I've seen several third party programs out there for a more comprehensive solution.

Has anyone tried any of these?  If so, what has your opinion been?  Worthwhile, or throwing away money?

Thanks for any information.

Windows Server 2012 R2 - The task you are trying to do can't be completed because Remote Desktop Services is currently busy

The error:

The task you are trying to do can't be completed because Remote Desktop Services is currently busy. Please try again in a few minutes. Other users should still be able to log on.

Well-documented for win2008R2, but the error is related to.. Win 2012R2

No Gateway, no Broker.. only a single WIn2012R2 RDS Server, all users connected using TCP/3389

Running on amazon EC2, accessible by VPN IPSec, 32 GB of RAM, less than 20 users.

There´s no pattern, even users with 200MB of RAM in use by the session (as seen in task manager) but also user with 1 GB of RAM used. Users with a few proccess opned, but also users with more than 20 process opened. SOmetimes happens with users logged on for a few minutes or users logged on for a few days.

Plenty of RAM available, full of resources in OS

Even if the users waits for many hours, the system is still busy. All RDP clients running WIndows 7 PLUS the latest RDC 8.1 update

There is no disconnection timeout, users could be connected as much as they want. Users runs reports that can take many hours to complete, so a timeout will disturb the user´s workday

What i´ve being doing: I open the task manager and i force LOGOFF the user, after less than 30 seconds the user sessio disappear from task manager and the user could connect again

Since the server has been built, I have been seeing the following error the gateway logs...

Has anybody seen this before?

Unable to delete files within a User Profile Disk

Hi All,

We have the following problem, we are running a Windows Server 2012 (non R2) Session Host server using User Profile Disks. A user creates a new folder within their "Documents" folder, this new folder contains different file types eg, PDF, ZIP, DOC.

When the user tries to delete a file of the entire folder they are prompted by UAC. The user is not able to delete without an Administrator account confirming the UAC prompt.

We have checked the users security rights, the user has full access to the new folder and all files within.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

CAL compatibility with Windows Server 2012

Hi,

My team and I are working to upgrade our domain (new physical domain, new operating system (Windows Server 2012 R2)).

While in the process of upgrading, we're wondering - we have old Windows 2000 server Device CALs that need to remain for some of our users.

My question is: when we raise the forest and domain level to Windows Server 2012, will we still be able to use those Windows 2K server device CALs or will we need to upgrade to Windows Server 2008 or higher?

NOTE: We need our Windows Server 2008 as it currently has Internet Explorer 8; we're looking into other options but for right now, this is what we need.

Thank you

Hyper-V RemoteApp issue

Hello there,

I have a VDI and RemoteApp setup at one client and I noticed that each time i open the remoteapp for the same user and from the same machine, RemoteApp fires up another VM to provide access to this very same RemoteApp.

*NOTE*: I had a screenshot attached showing the issue but my account is not yet "verified".

Sooner or later the Collection will run out of VMs and start throwing errors at me.

Anyone has any idea how to fix it? Or at least why is it behaving this way?

Thanks.

Event 101, RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS reason code: 2

Hi all,

Having a problem where I can not connect via rdp to my server. I looked in the Applications and Services Logs -> microsoft -> windows -> RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS -> Operational Log.

The Warning message that I get when my remote login fails is:

"The network characteristics detection function has been disabled because of Reason Code: 2 (Server Configuration)..."

Also I can't get the following services to start:

Remote Desktop Management

RemoteApp and Desktop Connection Management

Remote Desktop Connection Broker

And finally when I go to the Remote Desktop overview I get the following message:

The server pool does not match the RD Connection Brokers that are in it. Errors: 1. Cannot connect to any of the specified RD Connection Broker servers. Ensure that at least one server is available and that...[the services I mentioned above] are running.

I can't start the services because I get some lame Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

Any suggestions ?

Thank You.

I tried a reboot and that failed.

TEMP profiles in RDS 2012R2 environment with UPD's

Hi all,

Some time ago I opened this thread:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/08f91854-27c2-4bc8-8845-d2435db51c1f/hanging-upd-profiles-in-2012-r2-rds-environment?forum=winserverTS

Since then I've made some changes in the GPO's, but this seemed to have the affect that a lot of users now get TEMP profiles in de RDS environment regularly.

The Event Viewer System logs show these messages:
Event ID 16: The access history in hive \??\C:\Users\USERNAME\ntuser.dat was cleared updating 2157 keys and creating 297 modified pages.
Event ID 16: The access history in hive \??\C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat was cleared updating 367 keys and creating 47 modified pages.

Also there are a lot of these events logged:
Event ID 20499: Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from serverboth DC's for user USERNAME

This leaves the User Profile Disk corrupt and the only way to resolve this is to restore the UPD from an earlier moment.

Any thoughts?
I see a lot of RDS logs and searching online give a lot of results (non-related) back.

Kind regards,

Matthijs

Lossless compression for remote desktop

Hi,

We are developing healthcare applications. One of the deployment scenario which we were thinking was to provide access to clients through a terminal session.

For this we are planning to run the viewer applications in a Windows 2012 R2 server and the clients would take a remote desktop to this server.

Since the field is healthcare, image quality is of concern.

So before deciding on the solution I wanted to know if the compression used in Remote Desktop is lossless or lossy.

If the compression is lossy, is there a way to make it lossless, so that there is no drop in image quality?

Hello!

I have installed RDS in Server 2012 R2. After installation am not able to connect the server remotely (MSTSC). Its giving error “This computer can’t connect to the remote computer” (as shown in below image.)

Image

When I remove the RDS roles am able to connect server remotely without any issues.

I tried it several times but still, whenever I install RDS services, am not able to connect to server remotely.

Current Server Roles are: AD CS, AD DS, DNS, File and Storage Services, IIS, NAP, WDS

Method used to install RDS: Add Roles and Features > Remote Desktop Services installation > Quick Start > Session-based desktop deployment

Please help.

Creating Desktop Collections Hang : Server 2012r2 STD

$

Hi,

Im having issues publishing VDI assigned / pooled desktop collections.

There are three servers, lets call them server 1, 2, and 3.

When I try to either add to, or create collections, the process hangs with a "pending status" on server 1 and 3. Server 2 is always successful.

This just started happening. I have published 3 collections successfully prior to this. I have not made any changes (that Im aware of) to the servers.

I have turned on Debug logging and cannot find any relevant information. I am bound by an ITAR restriction and will have to scrub any logs that I share. But there are not many.

As far as i can see nothing is really being reported, its as if the system thinks the publish process is moving along, but its not. Interestingly enough after about 24 hrs I will cancel the task and then I will see an error in eventvwr that says "operation failed, reason - Canceled by user"

I have checked permissions on the drives and I have checked the export locations. I have gone as far as rebuilding the master template from scratch, even though server 2 publishes successfully.  I have changed the export location and the results are the same.

Im trying to get this working because my company wants to see a more native MS solution to VDI.

Any advice would be grateful and if I have missed any crucial information I will gladly respond with what I can.

I attached a couple screen shots to show you what it looks like and the RDS roles that are installed

UPDATE: MSDN will not allow me to attach images until my account is verified.

UPDATE:

I was able to pull a specific warning from eventvwr, Im not sure if this is related or not
"RD Connection Broker could not complete a remote procedure call to the Hyper-V server"

Windows 10 Remote Desktop only works after restarting

$

I have Dell XPS 15 purchased March 2016, running Windows 10 Pro, which only accepts remote connections after restarting it. It doesn't appear accessible after fresh ShutDown-Start, StandBy or Hibernate. If the internet connections is lost for any reason, a Restart is also required to find it accessible.

Overall, network access, incoming and outgoing remote desktop connections require this Windows restart.

I usually connect to this laptop from another Windows 10 laptop. Both laptops seat side by side within the same house and network.

Does anyone have idea of where to look for solutions about this problem?

Thanks

Smartcard user prompted for username and password during RDP logon process

$

Hi I am in the process of implementing smart card logon for remote users who connect into the office using an Zywall SSL VPN solution.  The two users I have setup to use smart  cards have not had a problem logging into our terminal server using the smartcard and pin however one user is having an annoying problem.

They are using a Windows 7 laptop joined to our domain and connecting to a Windows 2008 terminal server.  Basically for one user when logging on to the terminal server the user selects smartcard logon and enters their pin then 1 in 3 times the remote desktop session will load up fine.  However most of the time when they try and connect they are faced with the windows login screen asking for for a username and password with no option to change user or select a smart card login.

The lady in question is getting annoyed with her smartcard dongle because of this now and wants to go back to her username and password.  We did a remote session and for me the logon worked fine 1 in 3 times however she is insisting that this morning she tried 20 times in a row and got the username/password prompt.

I had a look at the event log on the terminal server system, application and security but couldnt see any errors relating to this happening.

We are using Gemalto GemPC Shell Token V2 (IDBridge K30)   dongles with Gemalto IDPrime .net smartcards.

Any ideas would be great as I am finding information on Smartcards a bit lacking when searching the web.

Kind regards Graham

MS RDS 2012 deployment to replace Citrix XenApp6 (Challenges)

Hello team,

We are planning to replace customer's existing Citrix XenApp 6 deployment with RDS 2012, RDS implementation should be pretty straight forward and will also provide a good end-user experience, however, one  thing which is really a concern to me is that customer is currently using heavy media apps with Xenpp and they want to have an improved performance once they migrate to RDS 2012 with RemoteApp publish. Does RDS 2012 provide now an improved functionality for media apps/video steaming/codecs etc. if yes then what are configurations points we need to be mindful. Any help will be appreciated.

SESSIONNAME missing. Unable to logoff user.

Hi,

I want to log off a user remotely using the below commands as I cannot RDP into the server. When I try to log in using RDP connection or mstsc.exe it keeps loading. Apparently I can't even log in from iLO4 it is just showing a blank/black screen.

So, this is what is I did from another server in the same subnet. I used qwinsta to check the sessionname and ID of the user. The SESSIONNAME is missing for the user.

I used this command logoff <SessionID> /server:IP or hostname.This didn't work.

However, I am able to logoff other users remotely with sessionname and id. The sessionname isrdp-tcp#0.

I used the reset command as well. The result I got was resetting session ID 2 session ID 2 has been reset. After this I tried RDP to it. It didn't work.

Rebooting the server helped but this reoccurred for the third time even after updating the windows (Windows Server 2012). Since this is a production server rebooting it every time is not the solution.

Any suggestions on how to log in to the server?

Thanks,

Use Existing User Profile Disks with New Collection

$

As the title suggests, we're in the process of creating a new Remote Desktop Collection with a new Gateway / Connection Broker etc. but have the requirement to use the existing User Profile Disks.

Is anybody aware of any potential issues that this would pose? Has anybody tried this before, my hoping is that we simply add the new RD Session Host servers to the UPD folder permissions and set the path in the deployment options.

We're not going to be using the original collection that the UPDs belong to that will be decommissioned as part of the project.

Any insight on this one would be valuable and appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Steve

Caps lock keeps switching itself on and off via RDS

$

We have 13 Dell OptiPlex 3020 Micro PC’s which connect over RDP Connection (through a router based IPSec Tunnel). The Clients connect to a Server 2012 R2 RDS Server which hosts application such as Office and other 3rd party apps.

We are experiencing capslock issues when using the Terminal Server. Seems to randomly change to upper/lower case when typing, doesn’t seem to be any pattern to the issue. We have tried the existing keyboards supplied by Dell and also a couple of other Microsoft keyboard. All of the keyboards we have tested are USB as there are no PS/2 Ports to test with. Obviously we have tried multiple brands and affects different users on different client workstations across 2 different sites (and in fact the users on the second site use custom built PCs not the OptiPlex Micro), the only thing really that is consistent is that they all connect to the same RDS server.

Has anyone seen this before or have any suggestions?

Thanks
Daniel

Cannot connect to RemoteApps in Virtualization based remoteapps session

$

I have a virtualization based session set up with all the RDS roles installed on a main server running windows server 2016 tp5 and my VMs running Windows 10 enterprise. I can connect to the VMs through RDWeb access no problems (they do run a little slow) but when I publish RemoteApps from the session i cannot open the RemoteApps.

when I attempt to connect to the remoteApp i am asked for my credentials, connected to the virtualization host and the virtual machine is started up. Event viewer confirms that a connection with the VM is made but then i get the following message in TerminalServices-SessionBroker:

"This connection request has timed out. User could not log on to the end point within the alloted time. Remote Desktop Connection Broker will stop monitoring this connection request."

the session always quits when the VM reaches the user log on page however remote desktop sessions have no issues logging on.

Why do I get a page full of config into when I click a RDWEB delivered app?

I'm testing out being able to launch a RDWEB-published application from outside our network(public)

I log into the portal fine, and can see the published icons.

I click the one I'm testing, and I'm presented with what appears to be a screen full of RD configuration
