Any applicable\recommended Group Policy settings (Local & Domain) for configuring windows 8.1 "gold master image" for collection

Happy Friday everybody -

I'm working on implementing Microsoft RDS 2012\VDI for the folks here at work.  I've read - online - a lot of articles on VDI and RDS 2012 - and have a working model that is working somewhat satisfactorily.  I haven't seen much online about steps I could take in Local Group Policy on my Windows 8.1 'gold image' - or for that matter Domain level group policy - that can assist in creating a better, more reliable/robust Windows 2012 VDI environment.

Anybody out there got any information or opinions or advice on Group Policy settings for VDI environments?

Thanks again, everyone!

2012 Deployment Scenario

Remote Desktop Services has already been configured on this server.  I now have the need to publish a few apps that are running on this server.  I go into Add Roles and Features Wizard and under Remote Desktop Services (Installed) I select Remote Desktop Web Access.

Page through the wizard and i select Deployment Type>Quick Start and hit next...

I'm presented with two options:
1. Virtual machine-based desktop deployment

2. Session-based desktop deployment

I can only select option 1, as session based deployment is greyed out.  Anyone know why?

**Also just thought I'd throw this question out there too...Without the Remote Desktop Web Access role installed, I can go to Remote Desktop Services>Collections and create a new collection and publish apps, they won't work, but I'm still able to publish them...any idea what's going on there?

Thanks

2012 R2 License server will not upgrade 2003 licenses to permanent

We migrated our Remote desktop licensing from server 2012 to server 2012 R2. We have 2003, 2008, and 2012 licenses installed. The migration was smooth with no issues. I usedhttps://activate.microsoft.com as I have before.

The new license server has been up and running for a few weeks and all seems good. The License server is issuing temporary licenses for all OS'es (server 2003, 2008, and 2012).

When I go into the licensing console, I see that the 2008 and 2012 licenses are being upgraded to permanent and this is verified in the event viewer by Event ID 82 ( The "Temporary"  Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 : TS or RDS Per Device CAL belonging to computer "XX-XXXXX" has been upgraded to "Permanent" Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 : TS or RDS Per Device CAL.)

However, the Server 2003 licenses are not being upgraded to permanent status, the event viewer shows no errors and the users are not reporting any issues.

Has anyone else seen this issue and know why the licenses are not being upgraded or know how to correct it?

Windows 2012 R2 License Server and Firewall Ports

Hi,

I have setup a Windows Server 2012 R2 as a RDS license server, and I have installed the necessary CALS.  This server is on the domain and in AD.  We have a separate VLAN that is isolated but can join domain for authentication purposes only, but it is behind a firewall.  What ports do I need to open on the firewall in order for the Windows 2012 Servers to aquire a license from the 2012 R2 server in the domain?

Thanks,

Mike

Terminal Server Outlook 2010 default timezone resetting to Central America time on log off

Afternoon everyone, hope you're all having a great day! Very interesting issue here, hope you guys can help me out.

I have a user that moves timezone very frequently, 4-5 times a month. So, to help him keep his bearings, we set his Outlook 2010 calendar up to show two time zones on the let, the primary being "Calgary" with a timezone of  Mountain Time (MST - USA & Canada -7:00 GMT) and the secondary is "Toronto" with a timezone of Atlantic Time (Canada -4:00 GMT).

Here's the frustrating part. Every time this user logs out of his terminal server session his "primary" Calendar time zone resets itself to Central America time (-6:00 GMT)! Then, all of his appointments get pushed up 6 hours as if the time that the appointment was scheduled was GMT and the appointment time is now being based off that. If he schedules an appointment at 8:30am while he was in a Mountain Time area with the correct calendar times showing, logs off terminal server, and logs back on the calendar will show this 8:30am appointment as being at 4:30pm. This is also completely wrong in itself as Central America and Mountain Time are only an hour off... Secondary timezone is not effected, it still stays at Atlantic Time or whatever time I fill in. But no matter what timezone I put in as the primary, it reverts itself back to Central America time 100% of the time on log off.

Going back in and setting his primary timezone back to Mountain Time moves all of his appointments back to their correct time, it is just more than annoying to have to do that 2-3 times a day. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Terminal Server issues are always hard but I will hope for the best!

How do I remove the Remote Desktop and Configuration Links so only the RemoteApp Programs is shown to a user? See below.  Or is this the default for view for all users?

RDS User Disk Profiles and Roaming Profiles

$

Hello Experts,

I wonder if someone can help me here please. In my current setup we use roaming profiles so when a user logins from a windows7 client computer a V2 profile is created copied back and forth to the server, which is all working well.

Now I am trying to bring RD Service in, allowing same users to be able to login from anywhere to access their work resources. RDS on its own is working but I am having some difficulty here with user profiles.

Without UPD

When a user login via the RDWeb he gets a new profile V4 in the shared profile area plus a local profile on the RD Server in C:\users which stays even after the users has logged off, if I look at the User Profile details in the System Properties it says abc user Roaming profile.

Above is not what I wanted hence configured User Profile Disks which does what i want but causes other issues

With UPD

Behaviour is the same I get V4 profile, a VHDX disk, a local user profile in c:\abd user which gets deleted when user logs off which is all well and good, pretty quick login.

Problem appears when I login as domain administrator or even a local server administrator i get temp profile so existing Administrator gets a profile like Administrtor.domain.backup0 or something like that.

does anyone know why ? What is that I am doing wrong. I would really appreciate all your help.

I am clueless- Many Thanks

Remote Desktop Licensing

Hi,

currently I have a partly corrupted* Win SRV 2012 STD instalation, which I would replace with Win SRV 2012 R2 Datacenter foronly one reason: Remotefx

I want to establish a working VM with virtual 3D gpu, available from anywhere with RemoteFX.

Before I get into all the trouble of completely setting up my home server, I need to know about licensing server. What I have is Dreamspark. There I got a 2012 R2 DC license, and separately I got W8.1 ENT for the VM. Are those licenses enough for the purpose? I don't have CALs, or any other licenses, except for those I can get within Dreamspark (are there any?).

Thank you in advance for replies!

* Windows internal database service won't start - error 3414 (all I could find was for SRV 2003, so useless); the problem is that some RDP services depend on this one

RDP can connect from Windows machine over VPN but not from iPad

Hi there, having a strange issue that is driving me crazy.

I have set up a Windows 2008 R2 virtual server called "DC" in my test lab for the first time, I have enabled Routing and Remote Access.

I can connect from my Windows desktop via PPTP VPN then use RDC to remote DC and it works fine.

I can connect to the VPN successfully from my iPad, but I have tried both 2x client and Microsoft RD Client to connect to DC and both say they cannot find the server, it makes no difference if I try connecting by IP rather than name.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Server 2008 Remote Desktop Services project

I have been asked by a client to investigate the possibility of building a 2008 Server with RDS services to connect 10+ XP desktops through for Internet Access only. Their application is a learning lab that connects to a specific website for occupational training. They will need flash capability and be able to hear audio on the local desktop pc's. Will this be practical and feasible to accomplish vs purchasing 10+ new desktop pc's for the same specific task. Thanks

Remote Desktop Services - Remove Certificates

$

Hi!

I have had a functioning Remote Desktop Services infrastructure up until I had to renew my RD Gateway certificate. I think I may have been in a coma because I managed to Select the same certificate for all the Role Services:
1. RD Connection Broker - Enable Single Sign On
2. RD Connection Broker - Publishing
3. RD Web Access
4. RD Gateway

I only have one certificate for my external domain name: rdp.my.domain and I understand that this certificate cannot be used for alle the roles.

What is now happening is that whenever i try to open a RemoteApp, I get this error message:

"Certificate Errors [...] The certificate is not valid for this usage."

Can anyone provide info as to how to remove the certificates for roles 1 and 2? I guess that this is where the error happens. I have no certificate errors when accessing the RDWeb page.

Thanks for any help!

Lock down of RDP sessions

Hello everyone, I have several issues...... my original domain consisted of a 2003 SBS and a 2008 R2 terminal server. Remote sessions worked great, locked down and secure. I introduced a new 2012 R2 server domain and can't seem to recreate the same lockdown features. When logging in, because this is a new domain, a new profile is created. Folder redirection is also functioning as it should but we do not wish this to occur for RDP sessions.

1] what are best lock instructions available if any.

2] How can I retain original user profiles?

3] If I create a new OU called TS-Users and add a policy in it to deal with folder redirection. Would this be the way to go?

Thanks in advance.

Windows Server 2008 R2 RDS Licensing Server has stopped issuing per device cals

$

It is a virtual machine.

It was working up to the  June 18, 2014

It upgraded one license to permanent but will not issue any new temporary cals.

License Server Has 20, 2008 / 2008 R2,  per Device Cals  with 19 available and 1 used.

This event has just started within the last 2 days.

Event ID 21

The Remote Desktop license server "VMOUSEY6" does not have any remaining permanent licenses of the type "Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 : Per Device CAL (TS or RDS)". As a result, the Remote Desktop license server cannot issue licenses of the type "Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 : Per Device CAL (TS or RDS)" to the Remote Desktop Session Host or Remote Desktop Virtualization Host server "VMOUSEY6". To resolve this problem, verify that the Remote Desktop licensing mode configured on the RDSH or RDVH server matches the type of licenses installed on the Remote Desktop license server. If required, purchase and install additional licenses as needed for this Remote Desktop license server.

Has been working fine until June 18, 2014.

Hosting Graphics applications on RDS

Good morning / evening all,

I am faced with a problem with one of our applications that runs reports and few other things and the problem is that this application runs and completes reports in seconds in a workstation but it takes about 15 times as long when running on an RDS server VM.

the host is windows server 2012 R2 running on an HP DL580 G7, so I thought this can be addressed resolved by installing a high-end graphics adapter on the host, and then allow the VM access to it, but this seems to be easier said that done.

the first problem is that I am not able to find a graphics adapter that's compatible with this hardware running this version of windows.

the seconds one is so far I am not entirely sure this can be done without VDI, which I am trying to avoid as much as possible but will try if I must

Any help or suggestions to resolve this problem is greatly appreciated.

Thank in advance.

Resetting Session ID counter

$

I use RD to allow my customers to run a custom app.  My app is older and requires printer names to be less than 25 chars.  I've given up looking for a solution to rename the client printer at logon and must explain to new customers that their printer name must be as short as possible.  As you may well know, Server 2008 R2 add (Redirected ###) to the name of the printer and the only way I know to reset the Session ID counter is to reboot the server.

Is there a way to reset the session id counter through PowerShell, VBS, Batch file. etc??

Is there a way to remove the (Redirected ###) and replace with just (###)?

Current documentation for Remote Desktop Services?

Could someone please direct me to the location of the reference documentation for the current version (2012 R2) of RDS?

All I can find is ancient stuff about 2008 R2 and brief marketing-style notes about what's new.

Thanks.

Prevent user from closing the applications

$

Hello,

we would like to deploy to our users web application using Internet Explorer which is published over RemoteApps. Because this application takes long time to load we would like to prevent user from closing application. So we would like that session and application stays opened when the user clicks on close button on Internet Explorer that is published over RemoteApps.

In other words, we would like to disconnect client from RemoteApp session, but stay logged in and keep the application running in the background.

Is this possible to do?

Thank you!

Best wishes,
Marko

Custom RDP Property not applied to remoteapp collection

$

Hi.

I'm trying to add a default domain to remoteapp RDP files published in RDWeb. I've run the Relevant powershell script:

Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration -ConnectionBroker servername -CollectioName collname -CustomRdpProperty "domain:s:domainname"

And the changes are indeed saved in the relevant registry setting in HKLM\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\TerminalServer\CentralPublishedResources\PublishedFarms\Full_Desktop\DeploymentSettings

The key is: CustomRDPSettings       REG_SZ        domain:s:DOMAINuse redirection server name:i:1

Yet the custom RDP setting never makes it to the RDP files downloaded from RDWeb, nor do they update in the DB (Connection Broker works in High Availability mode) when querying the DB with

SELECT * FROM [rds].[PoolProperty] WHERE name = 'CustomRDPSettings'

What am I doing wrong?

Is there another way to set a default domain name in the RDP files? I've made the changes in RDWeb following this guide: http://msfreaks.wordpress.com/2013/12/29/step-by-step-customizing-rd-web-access-2012-r2/

However, this is only relevant when a user is logged in from a computer marked as private in the ActiveX control. Which means it is only relevant if using Internet Explorer. I need users using Firefox and Chrome to receive an RDP file that contains the domain, so that when prompted for credentials when running a remoteapp, they wouldn't need to enter their full domain username (i.e. domain\username or username@FQDN).

Anyone has any suggestions?
