The computer can't verify the identity of the RD Gateway Server. It's not safe to connect to servers that can't be identified.

Hello all,

I'm attempting to setup TS Gateway in an environment.  After configuring Terminal Services, the RDC client, etc, etc.... I receive the error message stated in my subject line.

Here is the setup:

-External facing router with IP address of (not real) 10.10.10.1
-TS Gateway server named TS.SERVER.COM
-Edited the hosts file on the client to include an entry for 10.10.10.1 as TSG.SERVER.COM

I created the certificate for TS.SERVER.COM and specified it in TS Gateway Manager.

The RDC client is configured on a laptop (Windows 7):

'General' tab > 'Logon Setting' > 'Computer': TS.SERVER.COM
'Advanced' tab > 'Settings' > 'Use these RD Gateway server settings' > 'Server Name': TSG.SERVER.COM --- (ask for password)

Upon attempting to connect, I get the error message and have the ability to view the certificate.  It pulls the certificate information from the TS Gateway server, but when I click 'View Certificate', I see 'Windows does not have enough information to verify this certificate'.  So, just for S&G's, I exported and imported the certificate to the TS client and still got the error message.

I have never used Windows 7 as the TS client, but I am curious if there are any compatibility issues since the RDC client asks for RD Gateway information and not TS Gateway specifically.  I know they are essentially the same thing, but RD Services is a bit different than TS in Server 2008 R2.

Can anyone provide any guidance?  Hoping I'm missing something as opposed to compatibility issues.

Thanks in advance,

MDH

Best method for connecting clients to vdi sessions

I have created a session-based VDI collection (full desktop) on Server 2012 R2 and I am trying to figure out the best way to connect my clients.

The clients are Dell OptiPlex 755 PC's that are currently running Windows 8.1.  There are ~40 of them and they all currently auto login using the same generic domain account.  They are only allowed to run Internet Explorer and Adobe Reader with printing.

Any thoughts on how to best automate the connections?  In theory, it would be nice if this could all be set in group policy but I am open to other suggestions.

The aggregation of RemoteApp from multi sources

Hello,

I deployed one RD connection broker and connected to two RD session hosts as a farm,   published the same Remote application , like MS word in both RD session hosts, the RD broker aggregates the RemoteApp from the two RD session hosts. the RD web access use the RD brokers to connect RemoteApp.   user see TWO MS wordin RD web page,   is it by design? as I thought ,the broker role should aggregate the same applications that published in different RD Session hosts as one RemoteApp,  then balance which RD session host is available and will take the connection. is that right ?  if yes, how to configure it?

btw,   all servers are based on Windows 2008 R2.

Thanks in advance!

Easy print doesn't work office 2013

Since we use Server 2012r2 instead of server 2012, we are suffering from printing problems on our azure vm's..

Especially printing from office2013 applications is a headache! When i print from within notepad, it works fine. But when i want to print a excel sheet, or word document, it doesn't work.

It looks like the document is send to the printer, but it never arrives at the local printer. It is tested on many different pc's with different printers and different operating systems (windows 7 / windows 8 / server 2012)

I hope that someone can help me with this

already done:

- .net 3 installed
- Permissions on spooler folder
- policies for easy print first etc

Clear / Remove User Enabled RemoteApp 'Hot Key' Settings?

We seem to be having a somewhat *strange* user issue [Windows 7 Professional, SP1] with a RemoteApp application [RemoteApp 6.1]; when the user (and only this user) is in the application, presses the 'u' character on his keyboard (not CTRL-U, SHIFT-U, WINDOWS-U, or ALT-U) the 'Ease of Access Center' window pops up preventing the user from typing anything?

I'm guessing the user may have (likely by accident) held down the CTRL key (or some other key), initiating a user defined keyboard mapping?  Does this sound like a possibility?  More importantly, any suggestions on how to correct this issue?

Thanks for reading...

RDS 2012 issues after disabling SSL 3.0

Hi all, we have Server 2012 R2 RDS infrastructure. I have 2 servers running RD web, gateway, and conn broker using Windows network load balancing. 3 RDSH servers behind them handling user workload.

Last night I disabled SSL 3.0 on both of these servers using the registry key 'Enabled' set to zero in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\SSL 3.0\Server. Servers were rebooted after this change.

I did not disable SSL 3.0 on the RDSH servers yet, but I don't think it matters in this situation because the SSL traffic only passes between the remote computer and the RDGW server, AFAIK.

Today all the remote users were having issues with remote desktop sessions disconnecting them, but they would reconnect after a short time. They all told me this is unusual, normally the connections are quite stable. After I turned SSL 3.0 back on and rebooted, no more issues, users are happy. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything that can be done to stabilize connections while SSL 3.0 is disabled?

VDI Broker not balancing load over hosts

Hi,

I have a strange problem. Recently we added another host into our 2012 R2 VDI environment. We have approximately 50 desktops deployed over both hosts. The deployment of the collection and adding vm's works fine and I can see desktops from the collection over both. When people connect it always seems to place the users on host1, never on host2.  Host1 has approx 20 desktops running with 0 on host2 right now.

I can't see any errors in the logs, and I'm a bit mystified as to why i do not get any connections on host2? How can i try and track down what it is up to?

I think i've read before that the broker uses active machines/sessions as its basis so 15 vs 0 should definitely be enough to move new sessions to host2 i would think.

Thanks for any pointers...

Load Balancing on RDS 2012 R2 does not work

Hello,

I'm working on a test deployment with 3 Session Hosts,  GW/WA/CB on one server and licensing on another.

GW and CB are also on a Failover cluster so i don't want High Availability now (I want to start with simpler and work out the errors first)

One issue is when I try load balancing option on my Collection's Properties by changing the relative weight of the servers, nothing happens at all. All the sessions are created on a single server (GW/WA/CB) and nothing on the server I want to redirect to.

Any help is appreciated!

Remote Desktop Gateway Authentication Timeout Change

Hello,

I am in the process of implementing RADIUS based two factor authentication for the RDS gateway.  Its a phone based 2nd factor authntication and it adds a considerable amount of time required to authenticate, sometimes up to 60-90 seconds.  However, it looks like when remote desktop client is open and says "Initiating Remote Connection..." if the user does not pick up the phone and authenticate in the next 30 seconds, the connection will time out even if the authentication was successfull.  Is there a way to change amount of time that the gateway and RDP clients are waiting for the authentication attempt to succeed?

Our Environment:

Windows 2008 R2 RD Gateway + ISA 2005 on Windows 2003

Thank you.

"Use RD Gateway credentials for remote computers" option causing RDP to freeze

$

Hello,

I have a setup with one GW/SH/WA/CB  on server 1 , LS/SH on server2 and SH on server3

I have setup most things but one remains a mystery: When I enable "Use RD Gateway credentials for remote computers" option, I cannot launch the apps from the portal, after checking the certs, I get an error saying

"Couldn't open this program or file. Either there was a problem with <program name> or the file you're trying to open couldn't be established. "

When I disable that option (Use RD GW cred), this error goes away but I need to enter a password each time I launch an application, which is not ideal.

Right now, I either need to find a way to get rid of password prompt or find a way around the error I mentioned above when enabling the option.

Thanks!

Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS + AD DS Service on one Server

Hi All,

I support a small business and they are currently looking to upgrade their Windows Server 2008 server to Windows Server 2012 R2 (When it gets release). The current set-up is 1 Server which has the following Roles installed:
  - Active Directory Domain Services
  - DHCP Server
  - DNS Server
  - Remote Desktop Services

I realise that it's not recommended to have Active Directory and Remote Desktop Services on the same server but due to the client only having 5 users it's been working very well for them and it's very easy to support.

I'm currently using the Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview version to make sure that everything's going to work and there's a smooth transition to the new version of windows. What I'm starting to notice is that I am no longer able to install both Active Directory Domain Services and Remote Desktop Services on the same server. I have seen a few articles saying that there where ways to get around this but nothing has worked.

I don't want to have two servers in the office for 5 users as the business will see no point upgrading as pricing will be to high, also having VM's I believe will cause a major bottle neck on the server.

Has anyone got a work around for this problem??

Thanks in advanced.

Mike

Windows 2012 R2 Active Directory Domain Services and Remote Desktop services Role on the same server.

Findings:
Currently, Windows 2012 R2   AD DS role and RDS With Broker services can only seem to coexist properly in a new domain not an existing domain. Any attempt to add to an existing domain causes internal database user access denied issues and any attempt to adjust rights and circumvent is dubious at best.
The escalation technician said it best. Out of 50 clients that want to do this, they end up not being able to help 5 right off the bat for whatever reason. As for the other 40 they might be able to help by running reports, adjusting rights and trying to add the roles until it works.  This can end up being a 20 day process. Basically they are playing whack-a-mole with user rights and permissions until something sticks.
We tried creating an OU where any other domain policies would not be inherited to see if that was the issue, a fresh install with different sequence of adding the Roles, no effect.
Given the errors I witnessed when running procmon and then trying to add the roles, the NT System and the Windows Internal database user had access denied issues on 100+ registry keys when trying to add the roles. After that the system is not behaving normally. The errors displayed almost mirror the errors that would occur on Windows 2012 when those two roles would be added which of course is officially NOT supported on that system.
This blog needs serious revision:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2013/07/09/what-s-new-in-remote-desktop-services-for-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx
This is the excerpt from that blog: Single server RDS deployment including Active Directory. We now support running our RD Connection Broker role service on the same physical instance as an Active Directory Domain Controller.  In addition, we published guidelines for how RD Session Host could be used without the RD Connection Broker.
Microsoft Support was curteous and helpful and they were the ones who advised cutting our losses, which mirrored my hunch after seeing what was transpiring in the system.  They refunded my money for the support call.
For me, it was an opportunity to find out if there was any way to configure Windows 2012 R2 in the Same manner that it was setup as Windows 2008 R2 and lay that to rest. The coexistence is poorly implemented. It is as if there was a reaction from all the deprecation of bread and butter features such as shadowing in TS and the coexistence of AD DS and RDS to where those features were re-added haphazardly. (I have no complaints on shadowing on Windows 2012 R2 it works, just do not like having to go to server manager to use it).
I opted for virtualizing the Domain controller to eliminate the incompatibility issues and that is what I will be doing from now on. I found free solutions for backing up and reporting for virtual machines as well as the suggested procedures for configruing a Domain controller as a virtual machine on a Hyper-V environment and I will be sticking to those. Thus far the setup has been operational.
I am not allergic to virtualization, but for really small setups it adds additional time and considerations but if that is how it has to be done, so be it. Windows 2008 R2 days are numbered and since we can usually squeeze 5-7 years on quality server equipment, buying a Windows 2008 R2 setup now is a borderline disservice in my opinion.
Hopefully someone finds this useful and saves some time.

Remove and re-add TS back to domain - Any problem doing this?

$

This is probably a pretty simple answer, but was just wanting to verify there shouldn't be any issues doing this with others first.

We have several TS VMs and a broker.  Recently one of our TS VMs started to have several issues, the worst having to do with VSS.  We decided it would be best if we restored the VM from a storage snapshot we had.  After doing so we found that the snap must have been old enough that the machine needs to be rejoined to the domain.

Error received when logging in is just "The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed."

This is an easy enough fix.  However, was wondering would there be any problems resetting the computer account on the domain and readding this TS box?  We'd just rather nothing strange happen to the TS environment.
